        5 out of 5 stars Give yourself a lift.......2007-02-03

This book is for teachers. When you're young, you plow ahead regardless of the obstacles. But I'm 58 now, and I'm getting tired (almost retired). This book gave me the inspiration needed to have fun, enjoy the kids, and keep teaching.

5 out of 5 stars Todd Whitaker Fan.......2005-09-07

I am a real Todd Whitaker fan. Like his other books, this one offers common sense advice to help me do my job better. Reading the story about Bob the basketball player was itself worth the price of the book. Every teacher in America should read the chapter "Celebrating Yourself - You ARE a Professional". Great stuff.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspired Teacher.......2005-09-06

I picked up this book for a summer read looking for a little inspiration as I readied myself for the school year ahead. I was inspired indeed and I came away with more than a handful of good ideas and good reminders of what I should be doing to ensure the success of my students. This book has made me re-examine how I go about my entire day and I look forward to implementing much of what I read and revisiting the book throughout the year.

        1 out of 5 stars Not Impressed!!!.......2005-06-28

I read What Great Teachers Do Differently by this same author. I loved it and felt inspired to be a better teacher. The message in this book, Teaching Matters, is "just suck it up and do it", regardless of how bad the administration is. Yes, as teachers we owe it to our students to be 100% every day. As administrators, we owe it to our teachers to lift them up, praise them, and inspire them. I was not not motivated by this book nor was my morale was lifted. What Great Teachers Do Differently is a much better book and I recommended it to every teacher I know.

          5 out of 5 stars Terrific book...........2004-11-17

It's beyond me how anyone could not think this is one of the great management books of all time. I read a previous review that was critical of the "hehavior rewarded, behavior repeated" philosophy of this book -- but what that reviewer evidently fails to realize is that LeBoeuf's point is that rewards aren't just bonus checks and award trips. Attention from management, personal praise and mentoring are all vitally important aspects of the principle. What could possibly be the alternative? No praise? No management attention and encouragement? To reduce Dr. LeBoeuf's sound research to the erroneous assertion of a previous poster does a terrible injustice to potential readers searching for a work of great insight that is also a great read.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong slant on motivation.......2001-02-12

It's been many years since I read this book, so my recollection may be off. As I recall, the GMP is something like "that which gets rewarded gets done." If so, then this book is of a piece with hundreds that extoll the virtues of extrinsic motivation, whether carrots or sticks. For a devasting critique of extrinsic motivation, I recommend Alfie Kohn's PUNISHED BY REWARDS, brimming with insights into the shortsightedness of trying to motivate people with promises or threats. Years of consulting work and of on-the-job observation as a manager and employee have taught me that Kohn provides a true GMP, even if most managers resist it. Like those who could see with their own eyes that the Sun circled the Earth, these managers can "see" that only rewards or, the flip side of the same coin, punishments get results. If you are ready to question the "obvious," read this book, then Kohn's.

5 out of 5 stars The best Management book of all time.......1999-07-06

I read this book in the original edition when it was titled the Greatest Management Principle. While a simple and straight-forward book, it reveals the greatest of all management principles. I have read hundreds of management books over the last 30 years of my business career and nothing has told the real truth of motivating people like this book. It should be required reading for anyone who wishes to manage people.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of techniques to increase productivity.......1999-02-01

It would be of tremendous help to obtain details on how to convey the presented practices with effective management techniques such as Management By Objective.

This book doesn't attempt to tell how good exercise is for you. It assumes corretly, that you already know that. What it does is point out that "Reasons, (why you don't exercise), don't matter, results do" and that if you ARE commited, you'll work around the reasons.

What does the word motivation really mean, and how does it impact our actions? As far back as Aristotle and Plato, theories abound why some people are highly motivated to achieve their potential and others drift aimlessly through their lives. Simply stated, motivation is an inner drive that compels behavior.

Motivation can take many forms because we are all unique individuals with different dreams and goals. This audiobook is filled with motivational strategies and stories that should appeal to anyone. Use it as a catalyst to refuel your inner drive and renew your commitment to your goals.

                    Book Description

Although much has been written touting Six Sigma and its benefits, many are still confused about what exactly Six Sigma is and why it is extremely beneficial.

Six Sigma Fundamentals cuts through the "fluff" of conventional Six Sigma jargon and provides the reader with a solid understanding of what defines a Six Sigma initiative and what is expected from the organization, management, and customer. Each chapter fully addresses the concepts of the Six Sigma philosophy and explains the methodologies for real-world applications. Included with the text is a CD-ROM containing more than 75 ready-to-use Six Sigma forms. Six Sigma Fundamentals gives an overview to the entire process - from understanding the significance of "customer requirements" all the way to "Designing for Six Sigma" and "implementation strategy." The model tools, methodology, and goals are explained thoroughly, so that this powerful system may be applied to organizations that are concerned with drastic positive changes to both customer satisfaction and profitability.

With a focus on both manufacturing as well as non-manufacturing organizations, Six Sigma Fundamentals demystifies the methodologies, identifies the tools needed for accurate deployment, and enables the reader to explain the design of Six Sigma within the organization.

3 out of 5 stars Is Dean Stamatis a convert?.......2004-03-19

Dean Stamatis has been known for his opposition to Six Sigma. The following are direct quotes from a paper that he wrote in Quality Digest:

"We don't need the Six Sigma methodology to improve efficiency and productivity in our products; rather, we need to stop issuing "letters of deviation" and "waivers" from our specifications (especially at the product submittal warrant stage)."

"We don't need the Six Sigma methodology to improve throughput and timing. Rather, we need to stick to the milestones of timing and follow the guidelines of APQP. We need management's commitment for consistency and concern for improvement."

"We don't need the Six Sigma methodology for transactional problems such as paying suppliers within 90 days to 120 days; rather, we need to recognize that suppliers have to be paid on timely basis."

So Dean did you really convert, or is this a convenient book to cash in on Six Sigma's popularity?

                            Book Description

Intarsia—a mosaic of wood fitted and glued into a wooden support and popular in 15th-century Italy for decoration—is the focus of this guide. Scroll sawyers of all skill levels learn the secrets of creating these fascinating wooden inlay projects by using a scroll saw and other common woodworking tools. Fourteen portraits of North American wildlife, including an eagle, a mustang, an owl, and a fox, are provided. Chapters address the necessary steps to get started, including wood choice, pattern use, backing, and sanding, while also covering more complex issues such as adding texture to finished pieces to simulate fur.

                            Book Description

Tom Daschle, the Majority Leader of the historic 107th Senate, presents a candid insider’s account of the workings of the U.S. government during two of the most tumultuous years in the nation’s history.

The 107th Congress faced a time like no other in the life of the nation. This was the era of the first presidential election to be decided by the United States Supreme Court, the fifty-fifty Senate, the horror of September 11, the anthrax attacks on media and the government (including Daschle’s own office), the war on terrorism, corporate scandals that shook the economy, the inexorable move toward war with Iraq, and other dramatic events, all leading up to the historic midterm elections of 2002.

Through it all, Senator Tom Daschle had, with the exception of the President, the most privileged view of these unfolding developments, both in front of and behind the closed doors of government. In Like No Other Time, Daschle offers a riveting account of his singular perspective on a time when the nation faced deadly and elusive external enemies and a level of domestic political contention rarely seen in American history. Senator Daschle is un-flinching in his impressions of the key political figures of our time from both parties. The result is an acutely perceptive assessment of how our government met—and sometimes did not meet—the challenges of a remarkable era.

As it was during the years of the 107th Congress, the United States is once again at a critical and historic crossroads. Our choices, based on what we have learned from our recent past, will affect our future in profound ways. For Senator Daschle, the first and perhaps most important choice lies with what kind of representation and leadership we want in government. It is a choice between a political party with a core philosophical belief in the power of our collective will to confront these challenges through our government, and one dominated by a group of people who don’t like and don’t believe in government.

                            Pretty much sums it up.

4 out of 5 stars Significant, well thought out; an impressive political book.......2005-01-04

I agree with the others...I wish Daschle talked more about the politics. He makes important observations. It's sad that he won't be back in the Senate, nontheless, hopefully, he will write another book.

The book is quite touching, and it clarifies a lot of stuff about homeland security, Iraq, and what not. The best parts: His discussions about Democratic philosophy, his observations of others in government (particularly W), right wing memos, and his observations about American politics in general.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and insightful.......2004-06-29

Tom Daschle's memoir of the 107th Congress should ultimately be recognized as one of the best first person accounts of the critical two years following the 2000 election. Like No Other Time is an exceptionally good senatorial memoir. Daschle is a keen observer of people and of politics. Thus, his memoir is a candid and revealing look at the people and events that shaped America during two transformative years.

Daschle offers some sharp assessments along the way. His nuanced and careful impressions of President Bush are very persuasive, contradicting both the idealized portrait of the right and the left's ridiculous notion of the President as an idiot. Daschle is no supporter of Bush, but is careful to note his strengths.

Also of interest are the dynamics between senators as described here. Daschle's sometimes-cooperative, sometimes-conflictual relations with Trent Lott are described amply. One gets a sense of just how much the Senate relies on such relations (I regretted that the book was published too early to record his impressions of Bill Frist and certainly too early to record Frist's tacky visit to South Dakota to support John Thune against Daschle). Also explored in fascinating detail is the successful campaign to bring James Jeffords out of the GOP.

Daschle writes with frustration about the decline of civility in the Senate and Congress as a whole - an early section details the change in tone wrought by Newt Gingrich. This trend has since been accelerated by the machinations of the White House - one section details just how much Bush committed himself to the Thune-Johnson race in South Dakota. With evident pain, Daschle also discusses how the emotional farewell service to Paul Wellstone inadvertently became a more partisan rally (his balanced account of the event is a nice corrective to polemical accounts from either side)

Like other reviewers, I wish Daschle had commented about more topics. He declines to discuss the outcome of the Thune-Johnson race, but does imply that Bush's inattention to economic relief for South Dakota was a strong factor. Nor does the later victory of Mary Landrieu in Louisiana receive coverage. But his discussion of the Democratic Party's debate, in the fall of 2002, over going to war in Iraq is priceless. Daschle aptly conveys the slanderous attacks made against the party over Iraq and the Homeland Security bill. Though Daschle is clearly in a position of partisan authority, he makes a notable effort to keep his tone balanced and restrained.

I was really impressed by this book and by its author. Whatever the outcome of his race this year - and I'd very much like to see Daschle reelected for the sake of South Dakota and this country - I hope that this is not the last book he writes about American politics. This is a book worth buying and reading for the insights it offers about American politics and the current tumultuous era.

                            4 out of 5 stars Inside politics.......2004-04-22

South Dakota Senator Daschle describes the 107th congress and its events, such as the September 11 attacks, the anthrax contamination of the Senate's Office Building, and other dramatic episodes during his term as majority leader. Daschle talks about the loss of bipartisanship and his disagreement with President Bush and Republican House Speaker Tom De Lay. This audio book is a good, inside account of the workings of the U.S. government.

4 out of 5 stars The Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Anthrax Book.......2004-04-20

Tom Daschle wrote this book with another author, or I think he dictated the book to the author would the produced what we have to read. I felt this way after reading the text because the book reads like a two hour C-SPAN interview without the questions. I may be a little too hard on the team here, but I wanted more then just some rambling account of these two years. I was looking for behind the scenes, blow by blow accounts of some of the political battles Daschle was involved in. I wanted dialog like Woodward always seems to fill his books up with. His guy was meeting with the President and all the other highest-ranking members of the government and he could barely give me the details of when or if he talked to them let alone a good feel for the conversation.

The book spends about 40% of its time on the anthrax attacks to his office and about 5% on the attacks on 9-11. Ok, I understand that his office received one of the letters, but in the big picture of the past two years, September 11th and what he was involved in is more important and interesting to me then his office being off limits for a few months. And what is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, this book is about the 107th Congress, I would have appreciated it if the author could have held his ego in check and not given me the Cliff Notes version of his biography. All it did for me was to get me to skip pages.

I should not spend all my time on the negatives. I found the information on the Jim Jeffords switch very interesting as well as the information on the homeland security and Iraq war bills. I thought his comments on the Wellstone memorial service to be insightful and a bit surprising. The author did have an interesting insight into the process and I found a lot of what he had to say informative. Overall, the book was easy to read and full of good information. I will give it credit for that, it is just that I expected and wanted more. Maybe the author is holding back for his end of career memoirs to give us the really good inside stuff I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars The 107th Congress And Two Historically-Important Years In 21st Century America.......2006-06-14

The most interesting parts of this book are its descriptions of the goings-on inside the Capitol while the events of September 11, 2001 were unfolding. (In a word, it was chaos.) Also little anecdotal tidbits make reading this book more than worthwhile. My favorite among these was the Senator's report that upon their initial private meeting then President-elect George W. Bush said coldly to him, "You aren't going to lie to me, are you?" The irony in Like No Other Time is that while this book describes the very recent 107th Congress and talks throughout about events which transpired within this present decade, the narrative already reads like a discussion of distant political history. There is also the ironic fact that Like No Other Time ends with Senator Daschle preparing a run for the 2004 Presidential campaign, when in hindsight we know not only would this not occur, but the voters of his own home state, South Dakota, would vote him out of a job in a mere two years. Daschle and his ghost writer have crafted a nice, never-boring read that is about the right length and is refreshingly devoid of grandiosity and self-congratulations: Daschle comes across seeming very much a decent fellow. Like No Other Time introduces us to the personalities of Washington, in and out of the public arena, and provides an overview not only of the happenings within that history-making Congress, but shows some of what being a United States Senator entails. Ultimately it is a good book, even if it is somehow slightly anachronistic.

5 out of 5 stars Eminently readable and full of good sense.......2006-02-09

This book tells well of the two momentous years, 2001 and 2002, for most of which time the principal author was majority leader of the United States Senate. One gets a very good insight into the workings of the Senate, and the book is easy to read and full of logic and sensibleness. He explains well the reasons why he did what he did, and one finishes the book sad that South Dakota in 2004 rejected a man who had served his state so well for so many years.

The setting of new taxes is a notably visible act that has potential political costs. This paper explores the setting of new environmental taxes across the 308 Flemish municipalities over the period 1991-1999. We find that first adoptions of a green tax are much less likely to occur during election years but are more likely if ones' peers/neighbours (defined both geographically and ideologically) already have the tax. In addition, whilst left-wing governments are more likely to set new taxes and coalitions are more likely to set the tax than single-party governments, the greater the fragmentation of the municipal government, the lower is the likelihood that a new tax will be set.

We analyze the determinants of environmental policy when two industry lobbies can seek a laxer policy that would apply to both industries and loophole lobbying that provides benefits specific to one industry. We determine the properties of the lobbying equilibrium, including the resulting emissions level. In many cases, higher effectiveness of loophole lobbying is detrimental for industries and beneficial for environmental quality, as it exacerbates the free-rider problem in the provision of general lobbying by inducing industries to turn towards loophole lobbying.
