This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.

The Pacific Northwest Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.

This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.

The Pacific Northwest Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The Pacific Northwest Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.

"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.

Power Made Simple.......2000-01-28

I opened this book at the beginning of a coast to coast plane flight and was unable to put it down until the end of the flight. I have found many self improvement books to be a little too "warm & fuzzy" and "touchy feely." Act, Don't React, however, was filled with practical information that I could immediately identify with and imagine using right away. The content is laid out in a compelling, "Why didn't I think of that before?" manner, and the simplicity of the concepts is energizing. There is power in the chapters of this book, and if one spends a little effort incorporating the ideas, the payoff is excessive. They say there's no "free lunch," but the valuable information in this book proves that theory wrong. I totally recommend it. (D.A.)

Great pictures, but lacking ideas.......2004-05-19

First off, I do not regret buying this book. The photography is simply phenomonal, and it is inspiring just to look at the pictures. But unfortunetly, there are not really many gift giving "ideas". So if you bought this book looking for a new twist on gifts, you will be disapointed.

Ideas include putting flowers from the garden into bottles, or using big "floppy roses", or colored packing peanuts. Not to origional, but still beautiful. She does convey the importance of giving thoughtful gifts, not just store bought items. Some reviewers had said that this is just a repeat of what is shown on her television show. I personally don't watch the show, so it's not a repeat for me.

Without the photography, I would have rated this book a two. But the pictures are what inspires you to give creative and thoughtful gifts.

I really liked her other Shabby Chic books and enjoy reading and looking at them this one was a bit of a let down.It would have been better in a magazine format

After already reading 2 of Rachel Ashwell's books I decided the third was one too many. These ideas already appeared in her show or other books. I think we all know how creative Rachel is, what a great mom she is, what her pallette consists of, that she can afford to shop all over the world, etc. Enough already! Don't waste your time. Martha Stewart has more creative ideas.

What a disappointment! There are no projects with directions, and what the author deems inspirational ideas consist of such things as SEVERAL PAGES describing why it is nice to stick a loving note in your kids' lunchboxes. Mind you, I would have been delighted with a book of inspirational ideas -- but this sure wasn't it. I'd be ashamed to give 99% of the items as gifts; they're both tacky and yucky. The few decent ideas (gifts of herbs or flowers, citing the meaning of each) are old hat if you read any books, magazines, or online crafts lists. This was a huge disappointment and a colossal waste of money; what could have been wonderful instead seemed heavily padded to use up space, rather than providing viable/innovative ideas (or even good ideas, never mind original). I returned mine to Amazon.

Horrible Book.......2007-08-02

Truly a horrible book. Don't buy it - get it from a library or buy a used copy. Mr. Moore shouldn't receive a dime in royalties. This retired BATF agent doesn't attempt to hide his hatred of the FBI, The National Rifle Association (NRA), and "Gun Lovers" (his description) of all types. To try to smear the NRA, he states that the NRA lied about BATF, yet he wrote numerous falsehoods (lies) about the NRA. For example, he falsely wrote that the NRA sold the rifle (that killed President Kennedy) to Oswald. Such false statements make an intelligent reader question all his so-called "facts". A reader would have to review all his footnotes and source material to judge if his "facts" and conclusions are accurate or just a reflection of his bias, hatred and prejudice. Is the BATF filled with agents such as this? If so, we may have a real problem. Mr. Moore clearly advocates ignoring citizen rights to nail BATF targets. The Second Amendment? It doesn't exist for Mr. Moore.

This book is facinating. I was totally imersed in it and sorry that it ended. Maybe the author could write a sequel since ATF is now under the Department of Justice with a new mission of fighting worldwide terrorism.

This book is fantastic! I love how it is written in short stories/memories. It makes for an easy read leaving you with anticipation for the next memory. I borrowed it from the library (Cicero, Indiana). I loved it as I stated before but am going to buy a copy for my Father-in-Law who also grew up during the depression on a small farm in northern Indiana. I'm sure he will enjoy it much, much more than I and will recall fond memories for him as well. He is in his 80's and is still living in the house where he was born and farming the farm. The author is brilliant is his writing!

I am a law student and bought this book for a paper I was writing. This book was useless. It does not cover any of the "real" issues surrounding Family Limited Partnerships such as IRS scrutiny and valuation discounts. I do not think this book would be helpful to anyone considering a Family Limited Partnership. I would go so far as to say this book could be misleading to someone considering a FLP.

REALLY BAD.......2006-03-26

This cookbook is really bad. As a Latvian cook, I can tell the author does not know real Latvian cooking. The best Latvian cookbook with authentic Latvian food is the one by Latvian women from Ontario Canada. The book is called Latvian Cooking. It has had 9 printings, so you know it is good. The Taste of Latvia cookbook has very weird recipes in it for Latvian food. Also it has editorial errors. For example, the recipe for Klingeris starts with " cups very warm milk". It does not specify how many cups. The recipe for Alexander cake is to make it in three layers. I have never made or seen one with 3 layers, not even in Latvia. It is always made with 2 layers. Also, the book is missing basic Latvian foods, like braised sauerkraut. Braised sauerkraut is a Latvian staple and no book on Latvian cooking is complete without it. I won't even go into her errors on Latvian history. The author would have been better off writing a cookbook from her own heritage. Latvian is definetly not her heritage.

A Great Little Cookbook.......2003-05-19

OK so its got a few spelling mistakes, but at least some one has bothered to collect and publish these old time family favourites.

"Caraway Cutlets"?, I think she meant "Kotlettes" (meatballs).
Its the sort of recipe book that will happy sit on the cookbook shelf near the stove, as a reference to remind you of how grandma used to cook. I've always wondered how to make "Galerts", and there four different recipes for "piragi" dough.

A bit US-centric for my taste, but thats easily overcome.
A few photos of the prepared meal would be nice, you would normally expect it in this price range.

There are a good range of recipes including a whole chapter on potatoes, meat fish, breads, soups and porridges.

Not sure how many of my Kiwi mates would buy it, but hey, thats their loss.

Love the historical stuff interspersed with "dainas" (Latvian Folk Songs) and Latvian symbols.

Presentation is frankly unimaginative, but I can live with that.
I enjoyed this little cookbook, and look forward to the day it's updated with more recipes and colour photos.

Taste of Latvia.......2002-03-23

Author Siri Lise Doub has thrown together her book "Taste of Latvia." First of all the book was not proofrd nor edited. It shows the appearance of being thrown to gether. The Latvian words are printed correctly in others they are not. The carelesness shows that the author plucked recipes like she did with "dainas". I would be reluctant to test her recipes. If Ms Doub is an editor, she should have done a better job than this.

I would not give even one star for this book.

This book is filled with an array of recipes from yesterday and today, a newer Latvia. The pictures give you a taste of how creative and in love with the arts Latvians are. The folk songs are beautiful. As well as the symbols, and stories of yesterdays past. It is a great introduction into a mysterious culture that is very much alive, as well as unknown.

This in-depth focus on traditional Latvian dishes provides over a hundred easily-followed recipes from pirogi and potato pancakes to Courland Sour Porridge, all adapted for the American kitchen. Black and white photos and cultural insights pepper the book but it's these rarely-found dishes, including one for a traditional caraway-rye bread made with apple cider, which are treasures.

a page-turner.......2006-08-05

I have not read any other biography on Callas, but I listen to her avidly (her La Wally aria is particularly addictive) and have her Tosca performance on DVD as well as the documentary Maria Callas: Life and Art. But Callas's music alone has always made me wonder about her. Such deeply mined emotions in her singing, such ferocity, such purity, such power. How does she get all these in her performances? Where does she mine them? Zefirelli has compared her to Michelangelo, Bernstein has called her the greatest artist in the world. This book answers these questions and explains why. I have to say that it is a compulsive page-turner, even now in the twenty-first century where opera is no longer mainstream. There's always something interesting in each page. At the same time the biographer doesn't belabor a particular episode or detail in Maria's life as to make it boring or overly dramatized. And Arianna Stassinopoulos is no Kitty Kelly: everything seems very well-researched and reliable.

The Best Biography I've Ever Read.......2006-01-29

I can't believe no one has reviewed this book...so although I have never written one before here goes....
Critics say that this is the best book on the intensely private yet captivating Maria Callas. I'll go farther than that and say that it is the best biography I have personally EVER read and I am a huge fan of biographies. Yet, I can't quite put my finger on why its so good. Maybe its because Arianna Stassinopoulos shows a profound empathy for the diva or perhaps it's because she interviewed practically every living person who knew her. Maria Callas, the love interest of Aristotle Onassis who later dropped her for Jacqueline Kennedy, and of course the greatest dramatic opera singer who ever lived, is brought to life right in front of you in this fantastic, well ..... just read this book. You'll love it as much as I do.
