Of all the tasks we usually face when applying to graduate and professional schools, from choosing universities to preparing for and taking admission and standardized tests, from soliciting recommendations to having transcripts send out, writing a good personal essay is among the most important and difficult to accomplish. This book was EXCELLENT. I had read two other books before this one, and was disappointed. Though they claimed to be good for grad apps, they were clearly geared toward undergraduate application essays. This book asks thought-provoking questions that help to bring to light relevant experiences and skills that you may have left out. It is great as far as taking you through the process of brainstorming, writing, and revising, but also explains how to write a good essay even if the deadline is looming. It was very good at helping me to organize my thoughts and feel like a good essay was just around the corner - which did wonders for calming my anxiety about the process. The examples in the book were also very helpful, and this is the first book I have seen that had sections dedicated to specific programs (medical, law, business, etc.) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Personal Statement 101.......2003-09-23
In "How to Write a Winning Personal Statement for Graduate and Professional School", Mr. Stelzer concisely elucidates how one must bring out an original yet refreshing personal statement. 90% of the sample essays are geared towards the Big 3- Law, Medical, and Business. For students interested in other programs like myself, there are several takeaways one could get from this book. I would strongly suggest using the questionnaires in the Appendix. I learned several things from the pages on advice from admissions representatives. I would also suggest reading all the sample essays first and then the introductory chapter which would help one lay out the groundwork for an original personal statement. Real Essays for College and Grad School by Anne McKinney is another helpful book. Good Luck!

Attic Windows: A New View.......2004-02-09
This book is full of ideas on Attic Window quilts and wall hangings. The authors take the reader through colour and pattern choices, how to do an attic window and finally and great way to do binding. There are many coloured photographs using a variety of different fabrics. Included are the use of panels, using several different fabrics, applique and different size windows within a quilt or wall hanging.
I have used this book many times when doing attic windows and it has inspired me to look at this technique creatively.
If you are an avid quilter, this book is a good one to add to your collection.

The most beautiful place in New England!.......2002-09-05
This book is about a place very close to my heart. My grandparents, the Gorskis, have owned a place there for many years and my fondest childhood memories are of summers spent there (many of them are related in the Gorski chapter). Judy Fracher does a wonderful job of relating the many interesting stories of the people who dearly treasure this natural oasis. I can't wait to get back and catch some more brookies!

The co-author team that wrote this book was on the money. If your tired of the old ways of networking and your looking for a newer system that is reciprocal and more meaningful. Than go no further. The author's create an environment of understanding and implementation to the reader of their ideas of networlding and backing those ideas with some great resources. A must read if your a dreamer or trying to move ahead!
Do Not Waste Your Time With This Book!.......2004-02-15
Some people write books for the sake for writing. Some people claim to be smarter than others by assunming others are stupid. Both are true for this book!
It is always annoying to read books that tell nothing but common knowledge. The authors recycle ideas from any five books that one can find from library, then put them in an order that is not necessarily logical anyway. For example, after claiming how great this "networlding" idea is, the book suggest you start with "friends, family, cusotmers, colleagues, vendors" with probably average 5 lines of explanation under each. Sounds intriguing, eh? The book suggests some important quality for one to be succcessful in "networlding": "supportive, continuous communicating, good listener, responsible, influential, knowledgeable, empathic, appreciative..." and again providing five line explanation. How original is this? I guess if I look up any dictionary, I can find another couple thousand words that I can argue that if you don't have them, you are not going to be successful, in anything, networlding or not!
What is the most annoying about this book is that it tries to differentiate so called "networlding" with the networking people know. If the concept of networlding had been so different, then it would have been acceptable. Instead, the book assumes that every "networker" just constantly passes out business cards. It is almost offensive to any networkers with reasonable skills. For example, one of the most important messages in the book is that "networlders" discreminate their network by value. First, any people into network knows about this. Second, the examples provided in the book to prove this are nothing new - so and so and so and so are good friends, then suddenly one day one finds a job for another. Logically, such examples don't even support the arguments.
Unfortunately, there are tons of books out there that do not offer anything other than common knowledge that no one can object. Good books, however, offer original ideas or constructive suggestions. This is not a good book. This is a book that the authors simply assume the readers are stupid. Do not waste your time on it.
Networlding.......2002-12-31
Is swapping business-cards a waste of time? Yes, and no! This book is about taking networking to the next level - Networlding. Networking is for lazy people!
The book includes a step-by-step approach to the 'art' of networlding. Basically the book is about managing your relationships, and building/developing relationships with people who share your set of values and beliefs. It will introduce a risk to your relationships since you will be communicating your goals and values early on in the process - risking rejection. This is probably a more honest approach, and definitely the best way to find and build mutually beneficial, win-win relationships.
How do you accomplish this? The book suggests a seven step process - cycle that repeat itself. It all starts with finding out what means the most to you - your foundation. You will then learn to populate your primary, secondary and possibly tetriary circle depending on the nature of your current relationships. How do you create a mutual exchange, and nurture your relationships is the next question. Before it is time to re-create your networld, the book will discuss how to co-create opportunities.
I liked the book! I have not yet implemented its strategies, but it immediately made me think about relationships in a new way, to be more concerned with maintaining the right relationsships and finding the give-take balance. If I ask for information, I try to give something back. This is an area of my life that will continue to be important, and I'm convinced that I will apply the parts from the book that I find useful. I'm sure that there is at least a few tips that you will find useful in this book!
Viral marketing at the personal level, November 9, 2002.......2002-11-09
I found the book fascinating. Couldn't put it down. For those of you in the marketing world viral marketing (or word of mouth, or buzz...all the same thing) thrives on virusworthiness, defined as an ability to stand out from the crowd. That's what this book shows you how to do, not on a product level, but on a personal level. After filling my copy with marginal notes and underscores I started over again with Chapter three to more clearly establish the goals and values that make my relationships more valuable, both to myself and my partners. This book gives you an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Without a clearly defined direction in life many of us engage in meaningless, for both parties, relationships that consume precious time and go nowhere. Melissa and Jocelyn have presented a roadmap out of this morass. Anyone with ambitions for growth, whether personal or corporate-wise, needs to postion themselves within the proper environment. The seven step plan outlined in this book is as potent a personal marketing plan as any marcom strategy statement I have written in 25 years of developing marketing strategies for many of the nations leading software companies.
another trendy very very lite book on networking.......2002-09-24
I did not buy into the authors concept of NetWorlding. I was looking for a book that was more practical - their approach is very administrative full of trendy verbiage, like the title -'NetWorlding'. To really understand networking you need to understand politics - the best networkers are usually politically astute. Check out 'The Secret Handshake' by Kathleen Kelley Reardon. It has a much deeper and useful treatment of how to build and manage usable connections.

Bullard uses insights from his 30+ years of experience in helping congregations seek and reach their potential to show a needed conterpoint to the various movements sweeping the church. This isn't health or growth. This is seeking potential.
Many different types of congregations exist today. We don't need to stereotype them, but to show functional models. Bullard does this well. He also includes coaching insights and congregational, and personal reflection questions in each chapter.
Some of his most useful materials come in his life cycle of the church and in his materials on the ministry types emphasized during some recent time periods in history.
Pursuing the Kingdom Potential of Your Congregation should be read by all congregations entering vacancy or interim periods. It should also be read by any congregation, pastor, or layperson contemplating making the church a better witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I read George's book and must say that if you are working to move a church or congregation towards change, this book needs to be on your shelf. The examples are rich, the theory is deep, and the total content is beyond anything you've seen before. More than a repackaging of the same old "church growth" ideas, this book encourages church and congregational leaders to think beyond the same ole same old. I highly reccomend this book.

From the author: Strategic planning has experienced an evolution in the United States over the past 10 years that has resulted in a more externally focused orientation for the firm. Technological changes, deregulation, productivity pressures, increased emphasis on quality, and other factors present new problems and sources of competition. It is this highly competitive environment that appears to stimulate movement to planning styles that require externally oriented competitive intelligence. Such intelligence systems have been put in place by many U.S. firms and yet there is skepticism over how well these systems have provided useful, actionable information to decision makers. This study examines four types of competitive intelligence approaches and examines their usefulness in the context of the strategic orientation of the firm. An exploratory study of firms who are members of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals is described. The results are used to set forth a series of propositions regarding the usefulness of competitive intelligence systems as related to strategic orientation, and as related to the characteristics of such systems. Managerial implications are discussed.
