This book seeks to identify the causes of this ongoing financial crisis and to draw lessons for the future, with the aim of assisting developed, transition and emerging economies alike to better cope with future crises. Banks in Distress takes as its focus the major financial system crisis experienced by the US in the 1980s, reviewing the evolution of the US banking system and the legislative, regulatory, and monetary policies of the 1980s which set the stage for the crises that followed. The author argues that the financial difficulties in the US, and to some extent the rest of the world, were largely precipitated and exacerbated by government intervention into the American domestic economy through uncoordinated monetary and fiscal policy, as well as the uncoordinated enactment of regulatory, supervisory and enforcement legislation and policy. The book in particular examines the importance of asset valuation, asset value inflation and deflation, and capital adequacy for banking and financial services organizations, an understanding of which is crucial to the development of a coherent regulatory framework. Nice book - but not for beginners.......2007-04-10

Whether you start your Lean/ JIT journey or you want to implement Quick-Response-Manufacturing, one of the cornerstones will be how to reduce lot-sizes in production. Reducing lot-sizes have a high impact on faster LT/ cycle time because of the almost one-to-one reduction in queueing time, wait-to-batch-time and wait-in-batch-time etc. If you reduce lot sizes and variability in arrivals and variability in processing (use TPM as well) you will also reduce the work-in-process (WIP) - as Little's law simply shows. There are many practical studies showing as well, that smaller lot sizes have a high impact on quality improvements.

What is set-up time reduction? Often large lots are ran, because of not knowing the bad influence of large lots on cycle time/ LT and the understanding, that smaller lots will flaw capacity of a work station. In order of not to loose "capacity" with too many change overs and to profit from small lot sizes, you need to reduce the change over time itself. In the western countries change over times is seen as a given, instead there are tools, that allow simple reduction of set-up times by 50% or even more in a quit simple manner. Reductions in set-up time have almost an impact from one-to-one for the reduction of the lot size: cutting a set-time by half almost allows to half your lot size by half. The tool and method to reduce the set-up time and to achieve small lots is known as SMED: Single-Minute-Exchange of Die. The basic insight is to separate the internal set-up from the external set-up. This means to separate the different steps required for a set-up into things that can be done meanwhile a machine is still running or things that can really only be done, when the machine is stopped. Furthermore there are approaches for internal and external set-up steps to eliminate handling and to further reduce the set-up time. Very important from a practical point of view are the use of special fasteners etc. that are key for a fast change over.

This book is written in an easy and understandable manner. Anyway, as a beginner, there are better books to be read at the beginning. What I missed most about this book here, is a clear approach and description of the method itself. The book "Quick Changeover for Operators: The SMED System" from The Productivity Press Development Team does a much better job in explaining step by step the method. The book mentioned here includes nice pictures of fasteners etc., but the simplier book "Quick Changeover for Operators" uses much more usefull figures and drawings to understand the text itself.

Conclusion: As a beginner in this matter read the book "Quick Changeover for Operators". Even though I did not buy many further books on this topic, I'm quit sure, there are better and more state of the art books available about SMED than tis one ("Set-up Time Reduction"). Look as well about Shigeo Shingo, the man that invented SMED (former Toyota chief Engineer). More information on this topic you will find here:

Definitely the best book I have seen in this area........1998-03-17

I teach and consult in the area of setup reduction. I recently chaired a conference at which Jerry Claunch spoke and saw his book for the first time. I bought it on the spot and read most of it on the plane home. It is excellently written and gives a great deal of detail about WHY setup reduction is so critical and, more importantly, HOW to achieve it. Although I pride myself on expertise in this field, I learned many things from this book. It is a MUST READ for anyone in manufacturing.

Good for the real world too.......2007-03-02

This book was meant for use within a university classroom setting.

Surprisingly, unlike most textbooks, you can actually use this book in the real world. For example, a lot of business plan books and articles casually mention business forecasting. Unfortunately, the large majority of them barely mention any details on how to construct them. Well this book covers it in depth. As for other applications with the use of MS Excel, the book will show you the optimal amount of money you should put down into a select number of investments, how to perform project scheduling (with out MS Project), and the list goes on....

This is a good book.

Great Straight No Nonsense - Easy Read.......2002-04-29

This book is a wonderful tool. Not just a reference, full of working knowledge a small business owner should have before launching a new business (very good for startups). Also, an excellent read if your business has grown to the point where you are considering leaving a regular paycheck to manage and grow your business. Detailed but not overwhelming, insightful without excepting a great deal of prior knowledge about business law. Just a great book.

read the book several times.......2005-09-06

I've read BB's book several times, maybe 5 or 6. Every time I read it I still love it. I learn something new about him every time. If you even consider yourself a fan of BB or the blues, you have to read this book. David Ritz is an awesome co-writer, keeping BB's voice in the forefront, and he just gently guides BB. He did a hell of a job with Etta James' autobiography also.
An excellent book!!

A MAN AND HIS BLUES... the great BB KING..........2004-11-03

His real name is Riley B. King, the B.B. stands for Blues Boy, and he is known as "America's ambassador of the blues". A recommended enjoyable, good read about growing up and into music, self-taught guitar, remarkable attitudes of a man who faced prejudice and hate with an even keel. A performer who went on stage even when he was suffering from a bad case of flu. B.B. King took his music to Israel, England, and Russia, and held up in stature through the lows and highs. And he loves his 'Lucille' (guitar)! David Ritz has co-authored with the King a wonderful synopsis of love, fortitude, belonging, and enthusiasm. Recommended for blues lovers or otherwise... please don't miss this splendid read. (Review based on hardcover 1996)

A blues story.......2003-05-27

A blues story
B.B. King's life is presented here in a breezy, happy go lucky style. Ostensibly an autobiography, (although if you heard any of B.B.'s interviews about the book and his amazement at some of the details that were revealed, you know David Ritz did much more than help out.) this book deals with B.B.'s childhood of amazing poverty and his eventual rise to be the "King of the Blues." Conversational in style, but revealing in detail, BLUES ALL AROUND ME works as both a personal reminiscence and as a look at the life of a black man living in America during the 20th century. Tales of racism (in the military and elsewhere), the difficulties of dealing with a less than honest music industry, and the struggle for success against these odds are all expressed in a manner that shows no true anger, rather an acceptance that these were challenges to overcome. B.B.'s personal relationships with the many women in his life is not avoided, nor his opinions of many of his contemporaries. While the selected discography is extremely disappointing, this book should be required reading for any fan of the blues, and while any autobiography has to be taken with a grain of salt, this one definitely rings true.

To really get to know the Beale Street Blues Boy..........2003-02-20

Wow, I just finished reading this biography and am truly satisfied with my reading. It's been a long time since I read a book this refreshing. Talk about honesty, passion and heart.
The last 3 chapters were especially entertaining, talking from the heart about issues generally left untouched. From page one, I couldn't put the book down.
This book really helps you understand B.B's live performances. For anyone who as seen B.B. King live sometimes gets the feeling that his performance is a routine that dates back 25 years (well, I now know it is!), but this fact doesn't bother my anymore, understanding where the man comes from, better understanding his way of doing things.
Recommended for blues fans and anyone interested in a very entertaining read.
