      Book Description

This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.

The Southern Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.

This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.

The Southern Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The Southern Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.

"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.

2 out of 5 stars Dr. Norman Vincent Peale - Reincarnated.......2007-02-10

After reading this material and hearing Dr. Tice speak, one truth is validated by this book: There is nothing new under the sun. As a theologian, it greatly disturbs me when I read Tice quoting the Bible without formally citing the inspired text -giving credit where credit belongs. His oversights extends with much of Dr. Norman Vincent Peales writings and sermons as well.

The one crucial truth that Tice conspicuously ignores is the depravity of man. Somehow he can't quite bring himself to the reality of the human state --we're all born into the world with a spiritual birth defect called sin and we are in need of divine intervention. He's popular with educators (preferrably middle to high income areas) where the science of positive thinking has appeal. I wish Tice would quote C.S. Lewis.

These positive thinking spins are still very valid however (at least to the degree they are biblical). It's hard not to question the motives of a man who fails to give credit to true sources and someone who lives a very lavish lifestyle.

This Doctor --is the quintessential "spin Doctor" --a theological wantabe and mercenary who packages someone else's work while passing it off as his own, with a new age flair.

My first experience with Lou Tice was in a Corporate Training session in Portland, Oregon in 1978. I really resonated with his approach to personal growth then and when I recently ran across Smart Talk for Achieving Your Potential: 5 Steps to Get You from Here to There, I immediately bought it and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in continuous personal growth as I am.

Makes sense of the concept of "Dreaming to Succeed". Great for all of those 'Hard' psychologists who can't stand 'positive thinking'. Along with Robbins, Tice is the man for achieving your potential.

Lou Tice is the world' best kept secret. If you read at all about personal and professional growth, don't miss any of Lou's work. In addition to writing, he walks the talk and lives life like what is in between the covers of this book. Like the commercial for a certain spaghetti sauce years ago, "it's in there"--everything you could want to know on how to make your mind your tool instead of your master.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Tice is great.......2000-03-10

I took a class in college that included "Thought Patterns for a Successful Career" by Lou Tice. The man is truly motivational. I highly suggest that more people read his work. It's inspirational!

1 out of 5 stars Get ready for frustration..........2006-06-29

I just finished suffering through this book in order to get my degree and all I can say is... Holy heck, it stinks! It has a gazillion examples, but nothing is properly explained.

One example is the terrible chapter on inventory management. The text is fairly logical and straight-forward, but then it comes time to run some actual numbers and it all just stops. How helpful is it to get all these complex formulas to solve the problem, but instead of showing how to "populate" the formulas with numbers derived from a real situation he author consistently gives himself the data right off the bat, like "Q = 250". So instead of explaining that, hey, the "Q" in the formula in this particular context is pulled from THAT part of the question, and it is completely different from the "Q" in that was featured in the formulas in the LAST chapter, it's all trial-and-error until you figure it out yourself.

Then, at the end of the chapters, you get all kinds of problems to solve to make sure you got it. But of course, THEN you don't get a set of neat values to just plop into the formulas. In fairness, you get most correct answers in the back of the book so you have a clue of what you SHOULD end up with once you've cracked the code. Except, of course, that a good 10% of the answers are WRONG! It sounds like a punch line to a bad joke, doesn't it? I suspect they were rushed getting the sixth edition out the door and simply ran the fifth edition answers by accident; how else can you account for stuff like a question about amount of lead time for reorders to be: ".8869" or a question about utilization ratios to be "31 bags".

Bottom line: if your professor starts talking about using this book for your course, run for the exits or get ready for lots of joyful hair-pulling.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good book for Business Mngt. Students.......1999-12-09

The book is well organized but it is very expensive. There are a lot of examples and explanations included.

I saw this book while browsing Amazon. I'm a big fan of autumn craft and holiday books, so I ordered a copy used. First, be warned this is one of those SMALL books (perhaps 6.5 inches) with LARGE text, there is a craft per page with a photo of a suggestion on how the craft should look. The instructions are general and not detailed and contain no patterns. The photos are mostly cute, but the crafts really are only so-so. The tail end of the book contains a few recipes written in paragraph form. The recipes are simple and unchallenging. Overall verdict? 2. stars. I doubt I will make anything from the book, and anticipate donating it to the library in the near future. Disappointing.

She's done it again! This is a book you'll pick up again and again. I like to look at the art work and her craft ideas are fun to try. Mary, Charlotte Lyons, and Barbara Martin make quite a book-producing team. Clever!

          Book Description

Demosthenes' political power stretched over thirty years. Successive generations have judged him the statesman par excellence, and his oratory as some of the finest to survive from classical Greece. His reputation is such that he is still quoted in speeches by modern politicians, and is often viewed as the supreme example of a patriot. Yet, conversely, Demosthenes' political career led to the defeat of Greece by Macedon, and the loss of Greek autonomy. In spite of his undoubted individual importance in fourth-century Greek history, recent scholarship has tended to focus on Demosthenes in the context of his era. This volume redresses the balance, with a thoroughgoing study of the man and his career.

Pastor Pedersen was born in 1940 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He grew up as a Nebraska farmboy and spent his early teen years in Granger and Zillah, Washington. He received his seminary training initially at Southern Nazare University and became senior pastor in Potosi, Missouri in 1965. From there he became a pastor in Broseley, Missouri, Scott City, Topeka and McPherson, Kansas, Greeley, Colorado, and finally Spring Valley, California. Pastor Pedersen includes stories from each of these stops on his journey. Some of these stories are for entertainment but most reflect the ways that God can be seen working in his life and the lives of others. Also included are five of the Pastor's favorite sermons.

                Book Description

This study of class during the Great Depression is the first to examine a relatively neglected geographical area, the northern plains states of North and South Dakota, from a social and cultural perspective. Surveying the values and ideals of the old middle class—independent shopkeepers, artisans, professionals, and farmers—Catherine Stock presents a picture of Dakotans' cultural life in the 1920s and 1930s and tells of their efforts to come to terms with the enormous social change brought about by the New Deal.

According to Stock, the depression not only destroyed Dakotans' economic foundations but also bankrupted their community organizations and undermined theirsocial relations. She shows that Dakotans' social values, characterized by notions of neighborliness, loyalty, hard wok, upright character, and individual enterprise, were threatedened first by devastating drought and subsequent economic collapse and then by massive relief efforts and governmental intervention on an unprecedented scale. By 1940, one-third of all farmers who owned their land had lost it to foreclosure, and the federal government had spent nearly half a billion dollars to aid the region.

Stock argues that to Dakotans, the New Deal offered a trade-off between autonomy, community, and local control, on the one hand, and survival itself on the other. Dakotans, ambivalent toward "progress," feared not only for their land, their businesses, their families, and their communities; they feared for the survival of a way of life. They responded, says Stock, by working to make sense of the new world and find renewed meaning in the old.

Consulting varied sources such as diaries, autobiographies, oral histories, and newspaper accounts, Stock includes women's voices as well as men's. She integrates female perspectives on farm life and old-middle-class community into the narrative as a whole and devotes a separate chapter to women's experiences of the upheavals produced by the Great Depression and the New Deal.

                Book Description

On Main Street illuminates the lives of people from earlier generations who influenced the author. The book captures the essence and innocence of a Maine town when communities were more insular and self-sufficient. While the individual events are those of Dexter, they reflect an era of great change in America. The stories’ universal themes combine the child’s sense of wonder with the adult’s observations and experience.

On Main Street is about change and loss, connections and ironies, nostalgia and realities. It is told with subtle, self-deprecating humor, new found wisdom, and insight. This book will be enjoyed by an audience spanning several generations.

On Main Street celebrates the lives of the author’s family members—a grandfather who is known for his egocentricities and eccentricities, his children who grew up in two very different worlds, and a great-aunt whose strength of character shines through. This book also details the lives of ordinary people and unusual characters in the community from Louis Chabot, who worked the looms at Amos Abbott Woolen Mill, to Jere Abbott, son of the mill owner, who became a co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and a benefactor of Colby College’s art museum.

When the book arrived from Amazon, I greedily ripped the shipping box open, pulled the book out and did a quick search for photos. To my disappointment, the photos where printed very poorly on stock paper. Not the type of thing you want to see when trying to reconnect to your youthful days in Dexter, Maine. This said, I will now tell you what I liked about the rest of the book - EVERYTHING! From her frank and honest thoughts about special youthful moments and times she shared with family members and friends. To her detail description of Dexter locations that hold a ton of memories for her and for all of us that spent our youth there in the 50s. Very thought provoking read which takes you though a huge range of emotional feeling. Sometimes very funny and sometimes very sad, but mostly a well balanced range that gives a true feeling of that time and place.

                4 out of 5 stars A 'coming-of-age' page-turner.......2001-03-04

On Main Street, A Memoir is a little gem that details small town life in the 20th century. Through the eyes of the narrator, Prudy, you become acquainted with a wide assortment of characters who touched her life. This book will appeal to all ages because the author is able to recall in rich detail a by-gone era that many have (or wish they had) experienced.

                4 out of 5 stars A Reminder of Youth.......2001-02-11

I found this book thoroughly enjoyable to read. The author describes growing up in Dexter, Maine with a wonderful selection of characters and experiences. Although I now live in Maine, I grew up in a suburb of New York City, and I still easily identified with many of the author's descriptions of childhood and adolescent experiences. She has a terrific mastery of words. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be reminded of their younger years.

"Effective communication lies at the heart of every successful business. All good communication involves an efficient exchange of information, both internally and externally. In addition, knowing what and how to convey a message is equally important. Proliferating methods of communication, e.g. email, fax, mobile, Internet, telephone, verbal and non-verbal exchanges, widen the range of choices, and also increase the chances of choosing an inappropriate channel for getting your message across. Real-life examples illustrate best and worst practice in communication. A communications audit is also provided, looking in detail at which forms of communication currently work, where information is drawn from and its credibility and the use of different channels. The audit will most importantly provide a benchmark for companies to calibrate their present and future success. A sample audit response is also included. Mid- to senior level executives, owner-managers, consultants, trainers and advisers will find this an indispensable guide."
