Book Description
The kinds of management systems typically used in large companies throw up many roadblocks to innovation. This book compares the management systems of highly innovative companies with those of more typical companies and shows how they are different. Twenty different aspects of management are compared, from organization structure to communications systems to incentives to project funding systems.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most practical books I have read about Innovation.......2002-01-05
I have being reading the most important literature about Innovation Management and I have found this book extremelly practical. Christiansen is the first author I have read that gives you advise on how to implement change to improve the innovation capability of your company and gives you a clear research-based approach about which management systems should be changed first and why. For me, something very revealing was the chapter on how innovation systems should be different depending on the industry and/or company you are. This book offers a great value.

Book Description
RMS Titanic has had more written about her than any other ship but, surprisingly, there is a little information directed at the modelmaker. This new book contains all the information needed to build a highly accurate model down to the tiniest details of the hull's rivets. The book is based on the author's own remarkable 20ft model, specially commissioned for a traveling exhibition throughout North America. It contains a mass of practical information on how to construct every part of the great liner and is equally applicable to a small static bread-and-butter display model as to a large working version. It is highly illustrated with superb close-up photographs of the model, detailed drawings by the author and a large collection of photographs of the prototype herself, some of which have never been published before. In addition, the book contains a complete set of plans of the Titanic which are considered to be the most accurate yet drawn. With its mix of practical information, rare photographs and highly-detailed drawings this book will appeal to all Titanic enthusiasts as well as to ship modelers of every sort.
Customer Reviews:
Great Guide.......2007-03-08
I purchased this book after searching and searching the internet for a detailed model guide for building my own. The book is based on the building of most complete and acturate Titanic model built todate. The book breaks the model down to perfect detail. Even though the one that I am building is quite a bit smaller. The color photos are great, wish there was more. Each chapter takes you up one desk at a time, leaving no detail or explanation left out. He even includes little known history of the ship. If you are building, getting ready to build, or just want to learn, in detail more about the famous Titanic. Then check this book out well worth it.
Must have reference for building a Titanic Model.......2006-03-19
Like many ship modelers, I have always had a fascination with the three Olympic class liners, and particularly that most famous of the three, the Titanic. Of course, many are drawn to her story and tragically short life, but I have always been fascinated by her appearance - in my estimation, she was one of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built.
Over the years, I have made a couple of attempts at capturing her in miniature, but was not satisfied the results. One core problem has been the lack of reference material. The discovery of the ship and the subsequent James Cameron film has sparked massive amounts of interest in her, and a result has been the publication of many books, plans and websites on all things Titanic. The amount of research that has been done in the last decade has finally allowed highly accurate models of this ship to be built. This book documents a very impressive feat of the model shipwrights craft, a 1/48 scale Titanic that is some 18 feet in length.
Starting with a brief summary of the prototypes story, and quickly progressing into research and building, Peter Davies-Garner has written a no nonsense documentation of the model. The author touches on every area of the build, but some more thoroughly than others - a necessary compromise to control the size no doubt, but I was left wanting more. The many photographs are really the core of the book, and the model is covered thoroughly in black and white with a central color section. If you see a high resolution scan of the cover, this is a classic case of not judging the book by it's cover - for some reason, it is a poorly reproduced digital image, whereas the photographs in the body are higher quality.
This is an important work to scholars of the Titanic. What I particularly appreciated was the author's clear differentiation of which areas are factual and which are educated conjectures. As he states, there will never be a totally accurate model of the ship built, but his must surely be the closest to that goal yet made. I highly recommend the book, and, if you are visiting Orlando, seeing the model in person.
Very well-organized look at building a Titanic model.......2005-05-11
Having watched via the internet this model come together over the past couple of years, I often thought how great it would be to have a literary offering detailing a step by step illustrated procedure on how to build the definitive Titanic model. Over the years, there have been offerings to help the modeler build a comprehensive rendering of Titanic, from this writer included. Peter goes above and beyond and delivers in a way like nothing put out there before. The plans and photos will help the more visually-oriented person, while the text-packed pages will greatly benefit the model-maker who works better with worded descriptions.
The curious and the die-hard rivet counter, I believe, will find this book a valued addition to their collection.
A "must have" !.......2005-05-03
This is a "must have" for any person interested in the Titanic or ocean liners in general. Although, the book is aimed at model builders, people interested in the external structure of the ship will also find this book extremely interesting. The book is full of plans and some very rare photographs - I think some of the photos have never been published before.
If you're a model builder the scope of the book will blow you away with the plans and details of the ship that will be found no place else. Years of research went into this book.

Book Description
As Margaret Truman knows from firsthand experience, living in the White House can be exhilarating and maddening, alarming and exhausting–but it is certainly never dull. Part private residence, part goldfish bowl, and part national shrine, the White House is both the most important address in America and the most intensely scrutinized. In this splendid blend of the personal and historic, Margaret Truman offers an unforgettable tour of “the president’s house” across the span of two centuries.
Opened (though not finished) in 1800 and originally dubbed a “palace,” the White House has been fascinating from day one. In Thomas Jefferson’s day, it was a reeking construction site where congressmen complained of the hazards of open rubbish pits. Andrew Jackson’s supporters, descending twenty thousand strong from the backwoods of Kentucky and Tennessee, nearly destroyed the place during his first inaugural. Teddy Roosevelt expanded it, Jackie Kennedy and Pat Nixon redecorated it. Through all the vicissitudes of its history, the White House has transformed the characters, and often the fates, of its powerful occupants.
In The President’s House, Margaret Truman takes us behind the scenes, into the deepest recesses and onto the airiest balconies, as she reveals what it feels like to live in the White House. Here are hilarious stories of Teddy Roosevelt’s rambunctious children tossing spitballs at presidential portraits–as well as a heartbreaking account of the tragedy that befell President Coolidge’s young son, Calvin, Jr. Here, too, is the real story of the Lincoln Bedroom and the thrilling narrative of how first lady Dolley Madison rescued a priceless portrait of George Washington and a copy of the Declaration of Independence before British soldiers torched the White House in 1814.
Today the 132-room White House operates as an exotic combination of first-class hotel and fortress, with 1,600 dedicated workers, an annual budget over $1 billion, and a kitchen that can handle anything from an intimate dinner for four to a reception for 2,400. But ghosts of the past still walk its august corridors–including a phantom whose visit President Harry S Truman described to his daughter in eerie detail.
From the basement swarming with reporters to the Situation Room crammed with sophisticated technology to the Oval Office where the president receives the world’s leaders, the White House is a beehive of relentless activity, deal-making, intrigue, gossip, and of course history in the making. In this evocative and insightful book, Margaret Truman combines high-stakes drama with the unique perspective of an insider. The ultimate guided tour of the nation’s most famous dwelling, The President’s House is truly a national treasure.
Customer Reviews:
Very Informative and Entertaining.......2006-03-11
I listened to the Audio CD version of this book.
In terms of strong historical value, there is not a lot to this book. It really is pretty fluffy in its tone and approach. Margaret Truman is a credible source however and she does make it very entertaining to listen to.
The organization is interesting. The language is conversational. You'll come away with better knowledge of the White House, its residence and our Nations History.
A fun and insightful read.... .......2004-08-06
While Margaret Truman isn't on the same level as Ken Burns, Shelby Foote or other historians her books are a fun read. Who better to tell you about the White House than someone whose parents spent seven years in residence (although due to renovations it was not technically seven years - they spent some time at the Blair House).
She crafts a nice balance between telling you little known stories about the former first families while sprinkling in her opinions; much like a chef would throw a dash of spice into a recipe. One of the most pleasant surprises is that she is bi-partisan in her narrative. If she is wry in her observations about some of the first families, it is based more on her observations of character rather than party loyalty. She speaks glowingly of some of the Republican inhabitants - most notably the Coolidges.
I definitely recommend this book for those who love historical trivia. Plus much of the reading material (White House pets for example)can be shared with kids for those times that you'd like bedtime reading to be a little more stimulating than "Captain Underpants" or "The Day my Butt went Psycho"
Inside the White House by a Famous First Daughter.......2004-03-04
Margaret Truman is, of course, the daughter of President Harry Truman and his wife Bess. She is the most prolific writing child of any American Chief Executiv. Margaret Truman has written several mysteries and histories about life in Washington which are written in a popular style easy to understand and enjoy.
As Ms. Truman opens the door to our White House she lets us discover the fascinating men and women who have lived at 1600
Pennyslvania Avenue. She discusses such various topics as:
1. White House Weddings.
2. Relations between the Presidents and the Media
3. The Children of Presidents who have lived in the White House
4. White House Presidential Pets
5. The kooks and crazies who have tried (and in some cases been successful) in assasinating our chief executive.
6. She describes the growth of the White House from its first occupancy by John and Abigal Adams in 1800. The history of the White House building, grounds, gardens and additions are discussed.
7. How the routine of a White House day changed with every administration-when they awoke to what they liked for dinner!
Ms. Truman has written in a charmingly simple style which is nevertheless based on her well done historical research. This is a book anyone regardless of age or party affiliation could enjoy.
I recommend it highly!
The Story of the White House, By A Famous First Daughter.......2003-12-15
Former First Daughter Margaret Truman offers the reader an entertaining, anecdotal account of life at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Her focus is on the White House as a home, though its role as a seat of power is not neglected. As a result, you can expect to learn more here about the first wives, children, doormen, Secret Service agents, maids, gardeners, cooks and others who have lived and labored behind these famous walls..although the presidents themselves aren't entirely overlooked.
The exterior the White House presents to the world has changed little in two centuries...but the interior has been undergoing an almost constant process of destruction and renewal. We learn about the 1814 torching of the president's house by invading British troops; the addition of greenhouses, which gave way to the west wing at the beginning of the 20th century; almost constant sprees of redecoration and reconfiguring of the public and family rooms, all of which culminated in the complete reconstruction of the White House during the Truman years.
There are chapters about the rambunctious children, the unusual pets, the glamorous weddings, riotous inaugural balls and other historic events that have enlivened this historic mansion. You will get a sense of the behind-the-scenes preparation that goes into welcoming a visiting head of state or similar dignitary. There are two sections of illustrations, one in color, that further help the reader share in Truman's wonder and appreciation of this historic house.--William C. Hall
A Good Beginning. . ........2003-12-01
This book certainly reminds one of Mrs. Daniel's mysteries. I have read her various publications on her parents and I consider them to be better reads.
However, Mrs. Daniel does an excellent job of organizing her work, and the break-down of the chapters here is excellent. I didn't read the book in order, but picked the chapters in which I was most interested first!
I'm a history reader, though, and found very little in this book that was news. Save her personal recollections, I think I've seen this information elsewhere, and in greater detail. The book is very 'readable', though, and I managed to polish it off in two evenings, easily. This will likely broaden its appeal to its intended audience.
I can't say the book is a disappointment. I didn't expect a more academic volume. The expression 'history lite', used by Publisher's Weekly, is appropriate. For those who ordinarily don't read history, it will be pleasurable. For those of us who read history, a look elsewhere is recommended.

poor little rich girl? yes indeed!! what a wasted life.......2007-06-08
what a wasted life!! she had all the money in the world to do something of importance with her life and she chose to do nothing! she lived in a fantasy world, it was very hard for me to feel sorry for her, all she did was travel and collect husbands!! in the other hand, the book was well writen but is hard for me to know why anyone like this could be famous!! she was indeed a poor little rich girl.
Babs is 1 of a Kind!!!!.......2002-07-26
Knowing next to nothing about Babs, I found this book educational, but a little difficult to follow. The author dropped (what seemed like) about 10 names per page, most of which nobody who was born post-1960, like myself, would recognize. It was very hard to remember who was who. I thought I was doing a pretty good job keeping up with Babs' husbands...remembering which was which...but after a while it got confusing (obviously more the subject's fault than the author's). I think I got a pretty good idea of what Ms. Hutton was about, and have a hard time sympathizing with her...poor little rich girl indeed! She popped into a Woolworth's ONCE in her life, just to sign a few autographs. Her cheesy poetry netted her less than $200, the only money she truly earned of her own effort. Someone else handled all her financial matters (luckily for her, usually quite well), because she couldn't be bothered...spending money takes time, you know). She dropped husbands as soon as they no longer entertained her. Yes, she had exquisite taste in clothing and jewelry, and traveled incessantly to places I can only dream of ever seeing..but had no grasp on reality- she once sent one of her employees to the bank to change a bill because she had no change..it was a $10,000 bill ( I didn't even know those existed!). I enjoyed this book because it took me somewhere I could never go myself. It's hard to feel sorry for her though...she dug her own grave!!!

Product Description
CJ Sleez. The name evokes fantasies... with visions of the slender blonde writhing on stage to a driving rock beat punctuating songs she belts out with screaming intensity... Poor Little Bitch Girl is a raw, unapologetic recounting of pain, loss and hard times. Don't look for any sugar-coating or smoothing over of difficult moments. CJ's memoirs are as hard and rough as they come. CJ Sleez takes a no-holds-barred appraoch to life. She's a creative force of remarkable talent and a destructive force to be reckoned with. Poor Little Bitch Girl is a testament to an enduring free spirit.
Customer Reviews:
Poor Little Bitch Girl and Sharon Osbourne Extreme good duo.......2007-05-19
I picked up a copy of Sharon Osbourne Extreme and Poor Little Bitch Girl by CJ Sleez when amazon had both books paired together. I hope this pairing happens again to encourage more people to discover these remarkable memoirs by two women who overcame adversity, tragedy and the crazy world of rock 'n' roll to make their own mark in the world.
To say Sharon had and has her hands full with Ozzy is an understatement. I have nothing but admiration for her ability to cope with the Black Sabbath years and with her husband's wild array of excessive behaviours while trying to raise something approaching a normal family.
Hanging out with the Rolling Stones likely didn't help put rising rock star CJ Sleez on the path to kicking her heroin addiction and tendancy to associate with the wrong crowd. Failed relationships and memorable concert performances also add elements of interest to Poor Little Bitch Girl: Unapologetic Memoirs from the Queen of Raunchy Rock 'n' Roll.
Both women have lived life to the extreme, with no excuses or apologies. Both books are the real deal and as raw as it gets. I highly recommend both Sharon Osbourne Extreme and Poor Little Bitch Girl: Unapologetic Memoirs from the Queen of Raunchy Rock 'n' Roll.
Poor Little Bitch Girl is wonderful.......2007-03-18
I absolutely fell in love with this book and the sexy girl who wrote it. Talk about an honest portrayal of a life badly lived, CJ Sleez is candid about her former heroin addiction, her failed relationships and her many mistakes on the way to living life on the edge. There are other autobiographies out there by more famous people, but none as honest and gripping as this one. Highly recommended.
Poor Little Bich Girl is rich with insight.......2006-04-02
Poor Little Bitch Girl captured my interest with wide-eyed wonder. I couldn't put this book down for a moment and read it cover-to-cover the instant I picked it up. I learned a great deal of the troubles and triumphs of rock star CJ Sleez. She writes it all in a very honest way without ever falling into the trap so many other writers do of trying to make themselves look good. What an incredible and fascinating story!

Book Description
In science, business, and policymaking--anywhere data are used in prediction--two sorts of problems requiring very different methods of analysis often arise. The first, problems of recognition and classification, concerns learning how to use some features of a system to accurately predict other features of that system. The second, problems of causal discovery, concerns learning how to predict those changes to some features of a system that will result if an intervention changes other features. This book is about the second--much more difficult--type of problem.
Typical problems of causal discovery are: How will a change in commission rates affect the total sales of a company? How will a reduction in cigarette smoking among older smokers affect their life expectancy? How will a change in the formula a college uses to award scholarships affect its dropout rate? These sorts of changes are interventions that directly alter some features of the system and perhaps--and this is the question--indirectly alter others.
The contributors discuss recent research and applications using Bayes nets or directed graphic representations, including representations of feedback or "recursive" systems. The book contains a thorough discussion of foundational issues, algorithms, proof techniques, and applications to economics, physics, biology, educational research, and other areas.
