Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

Knod and Schonberger have written the best general text available on production/operations management at the undergraduate level.The text has very good chapters on Capacity Planning(aggregate capacity planning),Scheduling,Design(reliability and serviceability),Quality and process control(especially pp.318-322 on mean and range charts and pp.327-330 on process capability analysis),Inventory control,Timing(waiting lines and queues),and PERT.A minor weakness is that a discussion of the use of the Beta distribution in PERT analysis is omitted from the book.Anyone who covers this book throughly will be very well prepared to take senior level undergraduate courses and graduate level courses in operations management.

Fairly good survey book. Having an undergrad operations background, I found this book mirrored the strengths and weaknesses of a more detailed operations curriculum. If your MBA professor offers Schonberger as the answer to 21st Century Operations Management, seek a transfer quick. Obsessed with a touchy-feeling "quality paradigm", there is not enough meat here to frighten off the most zealous vegetarian. The chapters on "managing projects" and "facilities management" are especially shallow.

One of the unintended consequences of this memoir by Vermont senator James Jeffords is a blunt reminder that the tides of history are relentless. While its narrative wends inexorably towards Jeffords's courageous defection from the GOP in May 2001 (a move that denied Republicans control of the Senate and threatened the conservative agenda of the George W. Bush administration), that drama was ultimately undercut by the midterm elections of '02, which unexpectedly threw control of both houses of Congress to the Vermont senator's former party before his book was even published. But cruel historical fate hardly detracts from Jeffords's story of a life driven by conscience, courage, and true compassionate conservatism.

Indeed, its plainspoken, often self-effacing tone may make one yearn for more politicians naïve--or committed--enough to put long-term public policy ahead of lockstep party politics. Senator Jim Jeffords's disarmingly frank memoir recounts his idyllic small-town childhood in Rutland, Vermont, his somewhat unruly adolescence, putting himself through Yale University with the help of NROTC, traveling the world during his three-year navy service, and his courtship of Elizabeth Daley when he was a Harvard Law School student.

In his first term as Vermont state senator, Jeffords already had a reputation for being a maverick Republican. He supported welfare bills and environmental protection. As Vermont's attorney general, he helped draft and then implement some of the most important legislation in the nation -- the bottle bill, ban on billboards, and land protection.

Jeffords failed in his bid to be governor of Vermont when conservative Republicans in the state turned against him. When he was elected to the House of Representatives, he was so broke that he lived in his office. Meanwhile, he was battling problems brewing at home. He and his wife divorced and later remarried. But during his congressional years, Jeffords concerned himself with issues of education, energy, and dairy farming. He was the only Republican to vote against Ronald Reagan's budget. He supported Bill Clinton's Health Care Reform and opposed his impeachment. Jeffords's disagreements with the second Bush administration and the Republican leadership led to his decision to leave the party. In My Declaration of Independence, Jeffords wrote about his decision to quit the Republican Party. Now, in this memoir, he tells us more about who he is and what he believes in and what led him to that decision.

He concludes with a section on how we must rebuild America after September 11 and why we must improve our education system. In the vein of Jimmy Carter's An Hour Before Daylight, this is another magical piece of Americana from a different part of the country, steeped in the same lasting values and tough lessons.

Some picture books are written to deliver a certain sense of comfort to their preschool readerdom. They might reassure children that no monsters lurk in dark shadows beneath their bed, or that going to school for the first time can be scary but fun. But there's a really basic worry that children feel even if they may not always be able to vocalize it. It's the worry that one's parents no longer love them because they've been naughty or bad in some way. And if yesterday you had stopped me on the street, point blank, to ask me to name a picture book, just off the top of my head, that confronted this fear, I would've been up a tree. Maybe I would've babbled something about the end of "No, David" by David Shannon. No longer. Now when someone asks me to name such a book, I have "Don't Forget I Love You" to back me up. A sweet tale of a mother-son relationship that is ever-so briefly tested and survives intact.

From the moment Billy wakes up in the morning the day gets off to a slow start. In Billy's own words, "Rabbit's being naughty". Billy's stuffed rabbit is the cause of a lot of delay as both boy and mother get ready for the day. When Billy's supposed to wash his hands, Rabbit won't "eat" his egg. When Billy's supposed to get dressed for the day, Rabbit has a stomach ache (according to Billy). And when Billy's supposed to brush his teeth, Rabbit's buttons are all askew. By the time Billy drops both Rabbit and his lunchbox in the mud on the way to school (in the midst of blustery rainy weather), Mama's had enough. So Billy gets dropped off to school, late, without Rabbit (forgotten in Mama's bag) and without Mama remembering to say she loves him. This is nearly enough to set Billy off into a truly miserable tantrum. Fortunately, all is resolved in the end when Mama returns apologetic and gives Billy both his beloved stuffed toy and his much needed, "I love you"

There's not much of a plot to this remarkably simple story. And the book could've stood a little more clarification when it comes to whether or not this is actually a book about childhood fears of not being loved. Still, it's awfully sweet. Author Miriam Moss has a whole heaping helpful of books of this nature already under her belt as it is. Fortunately, she's been paired here with illustrator Anna Currey. And while the pictures aren't exactly going to blow you away, they fit the text nicely. Parents looking for books that support single mother homes might also appreciate Mama's position in this tale. Not only must she get her kid out the door and herself off to work but she must battle raging winds, an unruly stuffed pet, and a laconic tot to boot.

This is not the first, second, or even third title that I'd recommend if someone were to ask for a good picture book. But when it comes to the specific fears it confronts, should someone want a book of this nature, "Don't Forget I Love You" would be a first choice. A truly nice tale in a neat little package.
