Even more great watercolor projects.......2004-07-26

I have owned this book since it first came out. I keep returning to it for projects and basic sewing and quilting instructions--like how to sew the ends of binding together so there are no lumps. I especially loved the Diamond Jubilee design shown on the back cover and opposite the table of contents page. Although the pattern wasn't written up in the book, I was able to count the squares and recreate it. (The pattern is now available in quilt shops.) Try the triangle technique for the nosegays and beautiful ribbon border. Definitely a book to buy!

More Quick Watercolor Quilts.......2002-03-23

Dina has outdone herself, again. Her creativity, and talent for design and color selection, produced another beautiful book. Again, her instructions are clear and concise. She shares her ability to select fabrics that compliment each other beautifully. I didn't have any interest in watercolor quilts until I discovered Dina's books. If you love beautiful watercolor quilts, but were intimidated by sewing so many little squares together, try Dina's method. You'll be hooked!

Mr. Oltusky takes us with him through his journey from a Jewish kid growing up in Cuba to one of the men who help reshape the island. Wonderful insights into the Cuban revolutionary movement from an urban perspective. Historical characters come to life as the Cuban revolution takes shape. An excellent read on many levels- personal, tactical, historical - all provided with a humanistic point of view. Highly recommened.

this book is horrible.i got about midway and try to have an open mind but i couldnt take it.the translator if there was one did a nauseating job.i dont know if this guy expects for you to believe that fidel didnt have any part in writing this book but i know otherwise.anyway for someone who was educated in the united states you cant tell if an adult wrote it or a 2nd grader.there is no mention of comandante huber matos or any political prisoners that used to work under fidel,this is how i know that castro had much to do with it.well this book sucks and i hope mr oltuski passes away before he even attempts to write another book.DONT BUY THIS ITS CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Cover up in Anticipation of a Regime Change..........2003-01-28

Mr. Oltuski is the equivalent of a high ranking Nazi minister that sees the inevitable end of his regime, and decides to pave the way for the day when his opportunistic and in-humane actions of the last 45 years will be put to public question. The book is an excellent vehicle to re-write his own history and that of a government that re-engineered an entire society into ruin.

The book is not a smooth read, and his effort to connect to American readers via the cheap Jewish connection is very easy to detect. A minister of an atheist government that persecuted religious expressions and rose through the ranks by using anyone in his path will indeed have a lot to answer when there is regime change in his homeland. No matter how well the publisher advertises this book, anyone who ponders its real purpose can not help but walk away with a sense of dissapointment.

Captivating century of farm life and great food.......2001-04-17

Jane Philbrick's memoir and cookbook, "Gramma Kilburn's Kitchen" recalls the seasonal rhythms of a Vermont farm in the first half of the 20th century. The Farm, as the family always called it, was purchased in 1848 and worked for almost a hundred years, until it was sold in 1946.

Philbrick opens with a brief history of the place and leads the reader on a child's eye tour, through the five barns, the springhouse, the chicken house, the corncrib and the forbidden territory of the ice house; greeting the animals, jumping in the hay, grinding corn for the poultry. The house too brings back memories of warmth and industry with its hand-hooked rugs, Turkey carpet and the big heart of the house - the kitchen.

Susie Kilburn not only cooked bountiful meals for family and hired help, she also put up her own vegetables and preserves, made real mince meat and served home-cured hams. Philbrick includes "receipts" for all of these delicacies as well as for pork headcheese and sweetbreads and beef tongue. Also included are receipts from other family members and friends - Aunt Ida's Carrot Marmalade, Irene's Doughnuts, Aunt Bertha's Salad Dressing.

Beginning with spring (maple sugaring and Easter), each section opens with the author's lively remembrances, complemented with farm-life history and the memories of other family members - Philbrick's siblings, mother and aunt. The author also fleshes out the season with excerpts from her grandmother's diaries. Susie kept a diary most of her life but these terse passages reveal no innermost secrets. Instead they paint an intriguing, detailed portrait of farm routines from age 11 to 66, from farmer's daughter to farmer's wife and grandmother.

"May 1 Wednesday, 1890 Ida put Ma's bedroom carpet back down. Rollo and Frank planted potatoes. Mr. Jones came here to borrow the buckboard to go to Fair Haven. Ida attended a meeting at the school house with Mrs. Jones. Eli Drake carried her home. Harry Northrup came here and staid all night."

"October 6 Monday, 1941 Gladys washed in the A.M. The men finished filling the silo. Norm worked on the new shed. Ed sent his insurance on the buildings. In the afternoon Gladys varnished the dining room table. Ida came in the afternoon and Carrie Dean called. In the evening Ed took me for a ride up by the lake."

Then come the recipes - lamb and asparagus and fish and stewed greens in spring; new potatoes and peas, jelly making and canning in summer; apples and pickles and squash in the fall; venison, stews, and baked beans in the winter. And no lack of desserts at any season. "Of course dessert was served at all meals - including breakfast at The Farm."

The dishes are just what you'd hope to find - hearty, rib-sticking country food. Gramma's Sunday Chicken is a fricassee with egg dumplings, there is a whole collection of doughnut recipes and a section devoted to puddings, including Indian, Rhubarb and Bread. "I thank my lucky stars that I was a child during the time that puddings were still a part of our diet. Now, I am talking about home cooked puddings. There may be a place in our society today for instant puddings but not in this cookbook."

Within each season are sections focused on special activities - summer harvest, turkey drives, the Rutland Fair, butchering - and ordinary activities like housekeeping, shopping and, of course, cooking. Holidays get special treatment, with mouth-watering menus and recipes for every dish from Roast Turkey Dressed with Oysters to Plum Pudding.

I should probably mention that the author is my mother-in-law. This is no indication of prejudice. Rather, it means I have had the pleasure of enjoying many of the dishes, from holiday favorites like Cranberry Chutney and Parker House Rolls to year-round fare like Roast Pork, Bread and Butter Pickles, Potatoes au Gratin and Oyster Stew. I can attest that Aunt Ida's Famous Ginger Cookies deserve their fame and Aunt Ida's Swedish Meatballs really are "the very best Swedish meatballs this side of Uppsala or Stockholm."

Full of memories, history and good food, Philbrick's book is a warm, fascinating and useful tribute to a bygone way of life.

Solid business simulation.......2006-02-14

I've used this simulation for several years. You really have to dig into it to fully understand how it works and there are some warts in the game. The trip is worthwhile, however, in terms of student learning of diverse topics from financial accounting to logistics. Playing the game takes a lot effort out of the instructor - but I think it is worth it in the end.

I must disagree with the other reviewer! I use this simulation in my class and it works very well. However, it isn't simple and the base documentation isn't the best. The software is quite robust. The complexity of the simulation means this isn't just a game in which you can casually drop in some figures and see what happens - each team needs to spend at least 8 hours preparing and then about 2 hours deciding each set of moves! The reward is in simulation that faithfully reproduces and simplifies competitive and global forces.

NOTE - this software is totally useless to you unless it is offered as part of a class. You need at lest three teams AND the special administrator software only available to teaching professionals.

Avoid at all costs!.......2001-11-14

As a project in one of my MBA classes, we had to make 8 decisions in this "simulation" game. Over the semester, I have grown to hate the game and the book. The biggest problem with the game is that it is too rigid and does not mirror real life. The problem with the book itself is that it does not contain any information to assist you in making decision. There are also some misprints in the book as well. Avoid this book if you can, and if you can't, I wish you the best of luck!

I obtained the mentioned book from University library. It is in DOS format. It did not work in my XP notebook. I wrote many times to author. He is indiffirent. I could not run the program still. I did not have this chance!! But it looks it is for year 1995 not for 2003!

Not Today's World.......2002-03-20

The Business Policy Game is copyrighted 1995 and contains a computer disk for the simulated game that is still in DOS. It is totally out of date. It teaches students to run a company in a business world that no longer exists. It offers no opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship or e-commerce. This game may have been useful for students in 1995 but it is no longer a simulation of the world that faces us in 2002.

Excellent book for business simulation.......2000-03-29

The Business Policy Game (BPG) is a simulation of a business that takes place on a virtual world where only two countries exist, and you run a company that has competitors. You are the CEO and the CFO of this company. You take decisions about marketing, production, finances to make your company the best of the world.

This book is the BPG Manual, and contains the description of the world that the simulation develops. It is clearly written, and contains a detailed description of the process you have to follow to take decision on the Business Policy Game.

It is an excellenct tool to teach global marketing for a class. As a teacher, I need more information on teaching material. Without the additional teaching package, it would work by itself.

Modelling for Management by George P. Richardson is the first of two volumes on the subject of systems thinking and dynamic modelling. The first chapter / article provides the reader with insight into the very practice of modelling for management and exposes the fallacies inherent in many of the more common approaches. Subsequent chapters explore a broad spectrum of cases and applications of systems thinking to management. It is an excellent introduction and reference book for all readers interested in the field.

Both editions feature a bulk of information, put into a random order. No use whatsoever. The publications have no academical or practical value.
