What is the nature and scope of corporate responsibility with regard to human rights? Should companies themselves be responsible for human rights violations involving themselves or their subsidiaries? What principles should guide business in countries known to violate human rights? Is self-regulation sufficient, or are corporations best regulated by national or international codes, and on what should these codes be based? These are some of the many questions which this ground-breaking collection of essays seeks to address as it assesses the value of applying human rights standards to transnational corporations. The increasing involvement of corporations in the public domain and the steady reduction of governmental involvement in commercial and social undertakings has created a desperate need to rethink the nature and role of the private corporation and its regulation. This volume, which contains a balanced collection of analyses from all interested sources in the corporate responsibility debate, is the result of a three-day conference during which government officials, corporate executives, NGOs, and representatives of inter-governmental organisations, as well as academic researchers, came together for the first time to discuss the emerging issues. The essays have been arranged under six broad themes: policy issues, regulation, issues of application, matters of doctrine, globalisation and case studies. In addition, each section contains the opinion (not simply a summary of proceedings) of a nominated rapporteur who draws together the strands of each theme, and, where necessary, broadens the analysis to cover important issues which may not have been addressed. At the heart of this volume is the attempt to define an effective framework for transnational corporate responsibility through international human rights standards. It will be of vital interest to corporate legal advisers, human rights practitioners, NGOs, government law offices and academics, as well as to all those concerned with human rights and their place in the modern world.

The 1% Solution, Leadership Through Action, in a few words: 'Great,outstanding, motivational, moving to action, inspiring.' It's cuts through the red tape often found in many of today's self help books and gets right to the point of specific self questions, and specific how to solutions that focuses on the individual's personal effort. ('If it is to be, it is up to me.') Ten two letter words that can make the difference between success and failure. As a connoisseur and avid reader of good self-improvement books, I've probably read 40 or 50 in the past few years, from: Napoleon Hill's famous classic: Think and Grow Rich, Anthony Robbins': Personal Power and The Giant Within, to Steven Covey's run away best seller: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This is one of the best! I know that because it will be my text book, and constant companion until I've memorized and internalized its teachings and concepts. In a word it's a book with an action plan, and solutions I can act on immediately without any complicated formulas or state of the art strategy.

Amazing Book!.......2001-01-15

This book was incredible, it has helped improve every aspect of my life. I think Bijan Afkami is going to be the next Dale Carnegie. Perhaps some readers are not used to his unconventional writing style, but I enjoyed it thoroughly, and found it effective as well as interesting. Definitely buy this book if you want to learn how to be a great leader.

I agree with the assessment of the previous review. I would love to get my money back. If you are really interested in leadership try "Organizing Genius" by Warren Bennis. It much more interesting and talks about creating high performance teams.

Lack of substance or new ideas in this book.......1998-12-06

This book is honest in stating that it is just common sense. It is, unfortunately, a boring account of the author bragging about his accomplishments. I bought it thinking it was a serious consideration of the topic of leadership and was sorely disappointed.

Included is every facet of the Kennedy Administration, such as his two major spinal surgeries, each of which nearly killed him; his battle with Addison's disease, which he concealed for fear its disclosure would destroy his political career; his free-wheeling dating of the capital's young women until he met Jackie; the 1956 Democratic convention which nearly named him its vice-presidential candidate and would thus have destroyed his presidential hopes; the 1960 campaign and how he beat all the odds and the political experts by winning; his naming of several prominent Republicans to cabinet posts in his administration, further angering traditional liberals who already disliked him; how he ran the White House by never holding a staff meeting; his handling of the steel industry confrontation, the racial crisis at the University of Mississippi, and the Cuban Missile Crisis; and the tears of grief he shed over the death of his infant son, Patrick.

Fascinating Insight.......2006-04-18

Thoreau was without a doubt one of the most fascinating literary figures in American history. While his essays and ideas are subject to much criticism, this small book gives you an interesting insight into the man that most people never knew he was. Written by Edward Waldo Emerson, we get a first hand account of Thoreau's life from a slightly biased, but none-the-less interesting point of view. This pieces includes a lot of anecdotes and things that we may have never learned about Thoreau without Emerson having shared them with us. Definitely made me respect the man more than I did prior to reading this memoir.

An interesting view of Thoreau's life.......2004-01-31

Since this book was written by Edward Waldo Emerson, son of Ralph Waldo Emerson, he was obviously familiar with his subject. Henry David Thoreau spent time living in the Emerson house and was the substitute head of the household several times when Edward's father was out of town. He entertained the children and was remembered fondly by the young people of Concord. Here Edward includes those memories with his own and with excerpts from Thoreau's journal.

While these facts and quotes are valid, they don't paint a complete biography of the man. Some of the incidents make sense only to the savvy reader who already has a Thoreauvian background. And only the first 50 pages are text; the remaining 30 consist of expansive footnotes. If you want to glean the full story, you'll have to constantly page back and forth. Yes, it's a worthwhile view that comes from a friend, but it's not the best or most detailed chronicle. An optional read.

Another angle.......2000-05-15

This book is a glowing account of Thoreau's character, written later in life by Ralph Waldo Emerson's son Edward. Edward knew Thoreau up until the latter's death in 1862, when Edward was about 17. He has supplemented his own memory with interviews and anectdotes given him by other Concord citizens who knew the Thoreau family. These writings are a valuable resource for anyone who is researching Thoreau, with its humanizing slant and defence of its subject against perceived misunderstandings by the public. Any Thoreau fan will find this brief tract illuminating and amusing.

Essential Start-Up Book.......2003-05-10

In this book, Jack has set out very relevant guide posts for people who are involved in start-ups. His writing is absolutely "no-nonsense" and this book can be used as a recommended text in any business course.

My favourite bits:

I feel that Chapter 10 (Managing Projects) was very well-presented and clear. Another must-read is Chapter 13 (Reading the Market) where Jack actually brings in Economics concepts - this is a refreshing change and reinforces in relevance of Economics as an analytical tool.
Jack also includes updated links of relevant sites to research.

I believe that different portions of the book will benefit people at different stages of business development. This book is a must-buy purely because it does not romanticise entrepreneurship but genuinely wants the reader to succeed...
