5 out of 5 stars Help for anyone dealing with a workplace that gets them down.......1999-09-28

I read this book after leaving an "impossible" work situation. I immediately went back and recommended it to coworkers who were still working there. I believe what I have learned will help me in avoiding similar difficulties in the future and in working through problems wherever my career goes.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific, Very Effective BOOK!!!!.......1999-09-01

I am a self help book "junkie" (Guess, I need help for that!) but anyway, I do struggle with professional anxiety issues when it comes to office politics and being over apologetic in general to authority figures and co-workers who can be at times out of line. This book is the BEST book I have ever read that addresses REAL ISSUES and stresses that arise from dealing with at times ego-centric, power hungry, controlling, backstabbing people and NOT LOSE YOUR SANITY. His mantras that he offers the readers are innovative and at first seem kinda weird but upon using them, ( I am just beginning to feel better about myself and my professional contribution!! already) If you have any issues like this that you are dealing with on this front...Pls Pls READ THIS BOOK!! Best Medicine in Bookform for these type of mental ailments.....It is a Must Read and should be recommended by every therapist worth their Fee.... I currently have a terrific work setting and co workers and management team. but it hasnt always been like that...The book even helps one to see that the problems nor the solutions are outside one's self but ALWAYS internal first beginning with Self perception and self- appreciation even during the most trying and aggravating work situations.

        Book Description

As the number, complexity, and scope of large engineering projects (LEPs) increase worldwide, the huge stakes may endanger the survival of corporations and threaten the stability of countries that approach these projects unprepared. According to the authors, the "front-end" engineering of institutional arrangements and strategic systems is a far greater determinant of an LEP's success than are the more tangible aspects of project engineering and management.

The book is based on an international research project that analyzed sixty LEPs, among them the Boston Harbor cleanup; the first phase of subway construction in Ankara, Turkey; a hydro dam on the Caroni River in Venezuela; and the construction of offshore oil platforms west of Flor, Norway. The authors use the research results to develop an experience-based theoretical framework that will allow managers to understand and respond to the complexity and uncertainty inherent in all LEPs. In addition to managers and scholars of large-scale projects, the book will be of interest to those studying the relationship between institutions and strategy, risk management, and corporate governance in general.

                  Book Description

Septimius Severus, the African Emperor, was descended from Phoenician settlers in Tripolitania, and his reign, from AD 193-211, represents a turning point in Roman history. In his illuminating biography, Anthony R. Birley explores how "Roman" this man was and examines his remarkable background and career.

Given that Septimius came from Lepcis Magna, an African city that prospered under Roman rule, Birley first explores what was African and what was Roman in his background. Birley then considers Septimius' career as a Roman Senator in the age of the Antonines, including his second marriage to Julia Domna which led to a conspiracy to overthrow the deranged emperor Commodus and the dramatic civil wars of 193-197. Finally, the reign of the victorious Septimius is well detailed.

Well-illustrated and engaging, this biography reveals the multifaceted and sometimes conflicting character of an enigmatic and complex emperor.

4 out of 5 stars Informative but bit dry.......2004-05-14

This biography on Roman Emperor Septimius Severus proves to be quite interesting and very informative. It revealed an Emperor who was not only very able but also quite ruthless. Being the first Emperor from Africa revealed how international the Roman Empire truly was back then. The book provides good material on this Emperor's life, his background and background of where he originated from. Its a must read for anyone who happen to be interested in this subject matter.

However, its not really for casual readers. The writing proves to be bit on the dry side and although the book packed with information, the story doesn't flow as well as it should. It had a dry textbook type of feel to it. If it wasn't for that, the book probably does deserved the five stars that other reviewers have awarded it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Carthaginian in Rome.......2001-12-18

Septimius Severus (A.D. 146-211) hailed from Lepcis Magna, an African city which traced its ethnic and linguistic roots to Phoenicia and Carthage. Some of his townsfolk still had names that sounded disturbingly like Hannibal. He rose through the Army to become Emperor, following the disastrous reign of idiot-Emperor Commodus and the assassination of Pertinax. The mere fact that an African from the once-hated Phoenician coast could ascend to the principate speaks volumes of how the Roman system had evolved from city-state to universal empire. The early chapers on Lepcis Magna are a fascinating study in how the Roman provinces worked, socially and economically, and how Rome interacted with the outside world (Lepcis Magna greatly profited from its trade with Sub-Saharan Africa.)

Birley's assessment of Septimius's reign is ambivalent. Septimius was a vast improvement on Commodus, and, at massive cost in blood and treasurer, restored internal stability. His campaigns in Mesopotamia and Scotland were spectacular. Birley makes a plausible case that Septimius's ancestors retained a modicum of stability until at least Severus Alexander (208-235), but really the first signs of the cycle of contested rule, internal bloodshed and barbarian invasion that blighted the mid third-century can all be seen in Septimius's reign.

5 out of 5 stars Biography of one of Rome's most fascinating emperors.......2001-05-22

Anthony Birley does an outstanding job at presenting the life of a man who survived the insane rule of Commodus and founded a new imperial dynasty. Birley give one of the best accounts of the Empire under Commodus and the consipracy leading to his assassination. The brief rule of Pertinax is also delt with and the following civil war.

The begining section on the origins of Lepcis Magna are a bit slow. However, it provides a wealth of knowledge on what life was like in the Empire outside of Rome and Italy. Very few books manage to do this as well this one.

Showing the reign of Septimius Severus in great detail the reader can get an idea of how the 'Crisis of the Third Century' was to become almost inevitable. Septimius Severus favoring the soldiers over all else and his advise to his sons: "Be good brothers, grease the palm of the army and to hell with the rest."(not an exact translation of course) The life of Septimius Severus gives the reader a glimpse into what may have made Caracalla such a tyrant.

5 out of 5 stars Best scholarly biography of an Roman emperor I've ever read.......2000-06-16

Prof. Birley has written the biographies of three Roman emperors: Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus and recently Hadrian. "Septimius Severus: the African Emperor" is his finest work thus far. His fluent narrative and relevant remarks make the life of Severus even more interesting. We follow Severus from his native town of Lepcis Magna (in today's Lybia), the member of a family of Phoenecian origin but Romanized for generations. Severus starts his career in an unremarkable way during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, giving us a glimpse of what life was for individual members of the senatorial class. We then follow Severus's life throughout the reign of Marcus's insane son Commodus, Birley giving the best treatment of his reign that I have ever seen in English. The events leading to the conspiracy to topple Commodus, resulting in civil war and Severus's acession as first Emperor for whom Latin was a foreign language, read like a first-class thriller, all the more fascinating because true. As emperor Severus shows himself to be competent and ruthless, and apparently somewhat disdainful and resentful of the traditional elites of Italian background, which led to his starting to convert the empire into a military dictatorship. On the other hand, his support of the great jurists Papinian and Paul make his reign one of the great ages of Roman jurisprudence, which was to have so much influence on Western law. Severus's military pursuits in Mesopotamia and Scotland are also vividly described. To be sure, the first chapters on the origins of Lepcis Magna are a bit slow, but all the rest is fascinating. I could not recomment this book more.

                    Book Description

This book covers Julia's life, and charts her travels throughout the Empire from Aswan to York during a period of profound upheaval, seeking the truth about this woman who inspired such extreme and contrasting views, exposing the instability of our sources about her, and characterizing a sympathetic, courageous, intelligent, and important woman.

This book contains a fresh reassessment of the one of the most significant figures of her time and questions:

                    • Was Julia more powerful than earlier empresses?
                    • Did she really promote despotism?
                    • How seriously is her literary circle to be taken?

As part of a dynasty which used force and violence to preserve its rule, she was distrusted by its subjects; as a Syrian, she was the object of prejudice; as a woman with power, she was resented. On the other hand, Domna was the centre of a literary circle considered highly significant by nineteenth-century admirers.

                    Book Description

Londinium, Britannia, A.D. 211. A city of slum tenements and sumptuous villas, of orgy queens, drag queens, and drama queens. A city where the currency is often sex, where children go to work at age five, and marriage is a career move. Through the bustling city we follow Zuleika, the feisty, precocious daughter of Sudanese immigrants-made-good. Married off at eleven to Felix, a rich Roman senator three times her age who is usually away on business, Zuleika drifts around his beautiful villa, bored, or sneaks out to see her old friends. Then one night at the theater, several years later, she is spotted by the visiting Roman emperor, Septimus Severus, and they begin a passionate affair.

This is the unforgettable story of Zuleika, the Emperor's Babe, told through a dazzling fusion of poetry and fiction, history and myth. Funny, playful, and erotic, Bernardine Evaristo's novel in verse is a triumph of imaginative writing and a gorgeously readable and vivid narrative.

"Readable, sexy, delicious . . . I loved this book!" (Helen Dunmore, author of A Spell of Winter)

"Evaristo's triumph is to transmute politics and history into a glittering fiction whose words leap off the page into life. Anarchic, she calls it, but brilliant would do just as well." (The Times, London)

4 out of 5 stars Poetry that reads like prose.......2005-07-24

I had to read this book for a seminar I was going to attend. Not being a great poetry reader I did not expect to enjoy it. I read the book in one session, and after the first few pages did not remember that I was reading poetry. It flows really easily, the language making it very easy to dive into the strange world of the author's Roman London. The modern slang and approach make the setting familiar in some ways, and then the very different customs of the period bring the reader up short. The scene set at the local "games" needs a strong stomach to read. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars and now for something completely different.......2003-01-15

I bought this book with low expectation for both the poetry and the story. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. Emperor's Babe is sexy, stylish and just the most original book I've read in ages. The heroine is a tough little customer, a hip Afro Roman living in Londinium who meets the man of her dreams and loses everything else. By the time you come to last page I promise that you will be moved by her story.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing lyrical prose -- and funny!!.......2002-04-29

It's been a while since I've been knocked off my feet by a book in way The Emperor's Babe did. Maybe not since I read Rimbaud at highschool... Proverbs keep flying through my head when I want to describe the book: funny, intelligent, sophisticated, heart-warming, etc. etc. What struck me first (of course) was the verse. Steady two line most of the time, but changing pace in more intimate sections and by that changing atmosphere at once. The book is somewhat of a classic lyrical epic and bc of that rhythm it grips you from the first pair of lines, and (I have to say this) it swings!!

Second: the main character, Zuleika, is a welcome apparition in present-day literature. Zuleika is tough, smart and gets what she wants. No whining like Bridget J. or all the other 30-ish single women-books and definitely nothing of the "I've lived through it all" Oprah-books. Zuleika's got a certain sense of girl-power (sorry for that word) and that makes you love her from the start.

And then the story: London 211. It's dirty, rotten and sexy. But that's all I say, just go and read. And after that go and look for her first book "Lara". You won't be sorry...

                        Book Description

"By carefully identifying a 'mid-spectrum' population and then showing clearly how numerous and important they were in the Roman world, Haley makes an extremely sound, well argued, and well documented case for revising our basic concept of the organization of the free Roman social world.... His scholarship is absolutely first rate."

—Robert C. Knapp, Professor of Classics, University of California, Berkeley

Baetica, the present-day region of Andalusia in southern Spain, was the wealthiest province of the Roman Empire. Its society was dynamic and marked by upward social and economic mobility, as the imperial peace allowed the emergence of a substantial middle social and economic stratum. Indeed, so mutually beneficial was the imposition of Roman rule on the local population of Baetica that it demands a new understanding of the relationship between Imperial Rome and its provinces.

Baetica Felix builds a new model of Roman-provincial relations through a socio-economic history of the province from Julius Caesar to the end of the second century A.D. Describing and analyzing the impact of Roman rule on a core province, Evan Haley addresses two broad questions: what effect did Roman rule have on patterns of settlement and production in Baetica, and how did it contribute to wealth generation and social mobility? His findings conclusively demonstrate that meeting the multiple demands of the Roman state created a substantial freeborn and ex-slave "middle stratum" of the population that outnumbered both the super-rich elite and the destitute poor.

The extraordinary diary of Vermont farmer Hiram Harwood -- a fourteen-volume record of personal, family, and community events from 1808 to 1837 -- provides Robert E. Shalhope with the material for this rich microhistory. Harwood's struggle to reach full manhood and assume his position as head of the family, his misgivings about challenging -- much less displacing -- his father, the changes American life brought to this traditional rite of passage, Hiram's relationships with wife and children, seasonal events, and all the day-to-day experiences of this finally tragic figure make for a fascinating story and provide a highly unusual window into antebellum American life.

Although he focuses mainly on the story of a single farmer, Shalhope also incorporates other stories from this wide-ranging chronicle. Readers glimpse the social, political, economic, and religious life of the entire New England region. Most of all, though, the story of Hiram Harwood reveals the personal price exacted of him by one family's unyielding belief in patriarchy.

I bought this book due to the fact I am a direct descendant of the family that is the topic of this book. I have also read much of the Harwood Diaries themselves and was curious to see the author's interpretations. There are many parts of this book which are just verbatim quotations strung together from the Harwood Diaries. In other parts of the book the author seems determined to prove his theory of hatred and jealousy amongst the Harwoods. this is not the true story by any means. The true story is told in the Harwood Diaries themselves. As with any family there were squabbles but they did not dominate the relationships between the Harwoods as the author suggests. The author fails to get the name of the first Harwood in the United States correct as well which surprised me, given the considerable writings on this subject available in the Southern Vermont area. While I agree that the book is entertaining in its own right, from a factual standpoint it leaves a lot to be desired.

                                      Book Description

In the increasingly global business environment of the 1990s, policymakers and executives of multinational corporations must make informed decisions based on a sound knowledge of U.S. and foreign tax policy. Written for a nontechnical audience, Taxing Multinational Corporations summarizes the up-to-the-minute research on the structure and effects of tax policies collected in The Effects of Taxation on Multinational Corporations. The book covers such practical issues as the impact of tax law on U.S. competitiveness, the volume and location of research and development spending, the extent of foreign direct investment, and the financial practices of multinational companies.

In ten succinct chapters, the book documents the channels through which tax policy in the United States and abroad affects plant and equipment investments, spending on research and development, the cost of debt and equity finance, and dividend repatriations by United States subsidiaries. It also discusses the impact of U.S. firms' outbound foreign investment on domestic and foreign economies. Especially useful to nonspecialists is an appendix that summarizes current United States rules for taxing international income.

From the supplier: The industries which contribute most to pollution and to the destruction of the environment are those which often receive tax reductions from the federal government. Companies belonging to the chemical industry, the mining industry, the oil and gas industry, agribusiness and logging companies take advantage of special tax incentives which are usually buried in the tax code and have little chance of being repealed. An example of the injustice to taxpayers is the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The $1 billion paid by Exxon to the State of Alaska was totally tax deductible.
