Not worth the money.......2005-03-29

I was very excited to order this book to start making a sweater for my boyfriend. Unfortunately the book is full of sweater vests and only a few simple patterns. You could easily find similar patterns free online, so I definitely don't think it's worth the $35!

If you love color, try this book.......2002-03-01

I know the title says "Sweaters for Men", but women will love this book too. The structure and color of each sweater are lovely and the knitting is not too complicated.

Inspiring all knitters.......2001-11-03

Sweaters for Men is a beautiful book, excellent photographs. The directions are plain, clear and easy to follow. I liked the schematic that showed all increases, decreases, bind offs. I bought yarn at my local store and made a vest and have started a crew neck sweater. I will probably make two more sweaters from this book.

Great but EXPENSIVE.......2001-07-28

I got the book yesterday and my husband immediately picked out the cover sweater. I did a search for the yarn and found out that the sweater would cost $... to make. Other patterns use cashmere or pashimina which is also costly. I do like the schematics but I find it very boring to knit a seed stitch sweater even though the yarn is fabulous. Also, I wish they had included more bulky patterns. It will take months to knit a man's sweater on 8s.

Slightly Disappointing.......2001-07-28

I love the simple patterns but the cost of the yarns recommended is really high. I know you can substitute yarns, but it's still quite expensive. Also, I wish there had been more sweaters on larger needles.

The autobiography of Kenyan human rights activist and political exile Koigi wa Wamwere, I Refuse To Die: My Journey For Freedom is the intensely personal story of Kenya's blood-stained colonial past as encapsulated in Wamwere's life. This is a story of racial oppression and domination of the British, the role of religion in that exploitation, and the revelations Koigi experienced when he left Kenya in 1971 to attend Cornell University in New York where he discovered black pride, democracy, and freedom of speech. He returned to Kenya to fight for human rights and in 1979 won a seat in the parliament where he represented the economically depressed Nakuru district for three years. Koigi was targeted by the Kenyatta and Moi regimes and was framed for offenses he did not commit but for which he spent a total of thirteen years in prison where he was systematically tortured. He was at one point even kidnaped in Uganda by Moi and brought back to detention in Kenya. Koigi escaped execution only with the help of the Norwegian government and human rights organizations around the world, including Amnesty International. Today Koigi continues to work for social change in Kenya and continues to inspire a new generation of Kenyans with his political vision and personal strength. I Refuse To Die is informative, inspiring, and highly recommended reading.

Good autobiography of a mordern day patriot.......2003-03-11

Koigi's book is a good narrative of his life and philosophy as it relates to Kenya. A large part of the book is dedicated to describing his early life experiences and how they shaped his outlook on life and his dedication to the liberation of Kenya.

The fact that he was detained by both the Kenyatta and Moi regimes shows his resolve to fighting injustice no matter the leadership at hand. The contribution of Koigi to the "second" liberation of Kenya cannot be overlooked.

This book is an autobiographical exposition of a living freedom fighter that has experienced the oppressive conditions of colonial Africa as well as the terror of African dictatorship that people in Kenya and other countries find themselves in today.

Koigi's personal story is simply incredible. The son of impoverished forest workers, he was a first hand witness to the brutality of British colonialism against Mau Mau freedom fighters. He witnessed the birth of an independent Kenya led by Jomo Kenyatta, as well as Kenyatta's eventual betrayal of the ideals that informed the Mau Mau struggle for independence. Miraculously, the emphasis that his parents placed upon education led him to an opportunity to study at Cornell University in New York in the 1970's, where he was exposed to democratic freedoms that were unheard of under Kenyatta's reign.

Koigi then returned to Kenya to fight for these democratic ideals within his homeland, and as a consequence, was imprisoned by Kenyatta for speaking for freedom and land reform. He successfully ran for and served in Parliament in 1979, and was then imprisoned once again by President Daniel Moi. What followed was a series of exiles and detentions, eventually resulting in his exile to Norway and now, to New York city.

Koigi is a true democrat, and has devoted his life to the struggle for democracy and human rights in Kenya. The book title, 'I Refuse to Die' is a clever interplay upon the distinction between physical death and spiritual collapse; to Koigi, death of the conscience and the will to speak truth to power is the ultimate end of one's being. Albert Camus' phrase, "I resist, therefore I am" applies aptly to Koigi's life story to date.

The product of Koigi's history of suffering and sacrifice is a wonderfully written autobiography. And this story is certainly not over, as there is little doubt that Koigi will continue to fight for these ideals in the years to come.

What eventually emerges from a "crucible of anger, resentment and bitterness," is a sense of esteem, each individual for the other, and the development of an open and mature love that hadn't existed previously.

Would they do it again? "Our immediate response," the author says, "is an unqualified, yesÂ… Despite the hard times and the occasional tears, it was the adventure of a lifetime."

Family first, business a close second........2004-05-26

This book reads like a Thomas Hardy novel as we see a confident young Air Force general go from commanding a 40,000 man air base to running a New England inn with a staff of two-his wife and son. He cooks, she waitresses and the son runs the front desk as they deal with the vested political interests of Lenox, Massachusetts, competing innkeepers, occasional frauds and, worst of all, whining, complaining guests from New York. (These become almost human after a weekend in the Berkshires with muffins and Belgian waffles for which he includes the recipes.) All show lots of heart as they virtually adopt a Japanese teenager, acquire a large chocolate Lab, manage the son's wedding(s) and restore calm to a teenage housekeeper who inadvertently interrupted a romantic couple. Another such couple provided the inspiration for the book's title as they began the custom in one apparently inspirational room of using its guest diary to record their activities in remarkable detail.
Overall, an essential book for anyone who is even thinking of getting into the country inn business and for everyone who wants to see how a family can hang together under stress. Jam packed with events and details, it's a very enjoyable read, too.

More, More..........2002-06-11

This book is a great read, and a useful one for those of use who frequent Inns and B&Bs and think we would like to run one day. It is a cautionary tale, with an appropriate measure of pathos and humor, and it is well-written by a first-time author. I hope he has another book in him, but if he doesn't, he has done himself and his readers a great service.

Book is built around a data diskette which, according to the book, on pg xxiv, in the section titled "To the Student" it states : "If your instructor does not provide you with the disk, it can be obtained from .... by calling or...FAX...". Publisher (currently Thomson) will not supply data diskette making book almost useless. Too many better books to list. Don't be disappointed, buy a different book.

In order to maintain a sizeable amount of assets, it is necessary to take a lump-sum distribution, lessen current income taxes with five-year averaging and transfer the remainder into a charitable remainder trust (CRT). The plan may offset some of the current income taxes with the produced charitable deduction obtained from the CRT contribution.
