      Book Description

The book discusses the proposition that copyright is a just and proper concept, established and developed in the public interest, and explores the extent to which the notion of the public interest has influenced the copyright laws of a few major jurisdictions, namely, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The proposition that copyright is in the public interest has been taken for granted in the past but, in recent years, it has been questioned in the context of the challenges to the copyright system posed by technical developments. In this debate, the underlying philosophy of copyright and its basic functions have been called into question and the public interest has been invoked, in favour of free and unfettered access by the public to copyright works.

By examining the underlying principles which have governed the opyright system from its origins, this book makes a timely and useful contribution to the ongoing debate on the relationship between copyright law and the public interest.

        Book Description

Transmission of copyrighted work over the Internet has resulted in the introduction of a new exclusive right: the right of communication to the public, which was established by the WIPO Copyright Treaties. However, in implementing the Treaties, different jurisdictions have their own understandings and legislative solutions. This book examines these laws and the nature of the new right of communication to the public. In addition, copyright exceptions are an important way to balance the relationship of interest between copyright owners and the public by way of free uses, statutory licences and compulsory licences. In the environment of the Internet, this way is still effective on adjusting the relationship. This book analyses the relationship between transmission over the Internet and the exclusive rights, and examines all exceptions, such as fair use, sui generis rights, library and archive exceptions and educational use exceptions.

          Book Description

New legal approaches, such as the European Union's 1996 Directive on the Legal Protection of Databases, and other legal initiatives now being considered in the United States at the federal and state level, are threatening to compromise public access to scientific and technical data available through computerized databases. Lawmakers are struggling to strike an appropriate balance between the rights of database rights holders, who are concerned about possible commercial misappropriation of their products, and public-interest users of the data such as researchers, educators, and libraries.

A Question of Balance examines this balancing act. The committee concludes that because database rights holders already enjoy significant legal, technical, and market-based protections, the need for statutory protection has not been sufficiently substantiated. It also recognizes that some additional limits against wholesale misappropriation of databases may be necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Setting The Pace For Business Success.......2003-08-08

I recently re-read "Setting The Pace For Business Success" again after my boss gave me copy over a year ago. I was experiencing some difficulites in dealing with adversity at work and remembered the valuable insight this book contained. "Setting the Pace" has proved to be very valuabe to me over the past year as I have often referenced it for strategic advice. What has been most valuable is learning how Mr. Lanier succesfully navigated through the many difficult experiences in his career. His advice is practical and timely. I hope that at some point in the near future that my Boss will invite Mr. Lanier to our company to provide us with leadership training.

5 out of 5 stars Preparing for Business Success........2002-05-01

"Setting The Pace For Business Success" provides a combination of high level strategic advise of a personal nature while at the same time delivering a very practical ten step approach to the fulfillment of personal goals. The book is fraught with valuable insights and experiences for Preparing, navigating safely and successfully through the Scylla and Carybdis of corporate career channels.

Mr. Lanier's book shares an honest, straightforward and pragmatic (no tricks or strings attached) approach to establishing, navigating and managing career goals and objectives. The book illustrates how corporate success can be achieved without resorting to an unethical or "survival of the fittest" approach.

This book is well written and is easy to read. I believe "Setting The Pace For Business Success" can be valuable to the graduate student as well as the seasoned career professional. In these times of troubled moral and ethical standards in the workplace the corporate world needs to be reminded that success is not incompatible with good business ethics. How to prepare your self to get there is just as important as getting there. I look forward towards future titles from this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Mr. Lanier gives the reader the benefit of his 28 years of corporate experience in a way that entertains yet educates anyone aspiring to climb the corporate ladder. He suggests his book is for those readers who have at least 5 years of corporate experience; but I contend this should be required reading for MBA's students who are first time workplace entrants and anyone desiring a career in corporate america. The book also gives a glimpse to some of the inter workings at Lucent and AT&T. I plan to buy a number of copies to give to my employees and employees I mentor who are striving to be successful in their corporate careers.

                Book Description

In the estimating, planning, implementation and realisation of any project, large or small, an understanding of risk management is critical. The central aim of Project Risk Management is to set out the key issues and concepts involved in effective risk management in a clear and accessible way. The methodology is applicable to all kinds and all sizes of project, whether this warrants detailed, quantitative analysis or a "quick and dirty" approach using only qualitative analysis. Project Risk Management meets the growing need for a generic methodology employing a systematic approach to project risk management. A central concern of the authors is to provide a comprehensive discussion of risk management processes set firmly in the context of the project management task as a whole, with a view to improving project performance. Its emphasis is risk management rather than risk evaluation and it treats risk management as an "add in" (rather than as an "add on") to project management. Based on a sound conceptual foundation, developed to meet practical concerns, Project Risk Management is a clear, comprehensive guide relevant to anyone involved in managing a project. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Literature on Risk Management.......2007-10-11

All projects involve risk and risk involves both threat and opportunity. In today's world of project management, perhaps the single most important skill that a project manager can possess is risk management. Organizations that better understand the nature of the risks can manage them more effectively.

This book provides a framework for integrating risk management into the management of projects. It explains how to do this through the definition of generic risk management processes and shows how these processes can be mapped onto the stages of the project life cycle.
Another feature is the risk management processes provided can be used for either project or product management because of the fine granularity of the project life cycle used - instead of the typical 6-stage Requirements, Design, Build, Test, Implement and Operate stages the authors use an 8-stage project life cycle that begins with conception and includes post-planning allocation and post-delivery review milestones. Moreover, the typical risk management cycle of Identify, Analyze and Quantify, Prioritize and Manage is expanded into a much more detailed cycle that includes focusing, clarifying ownership issues, and scenario analysis. In particular, the scenario analysis sub process is an excellent approach and allows going well beyond the typical expected monetary value and probability & impact types of analyses.
The authors have set main emphasis on processes rather than analytical techniques. This book provides the reader with a fundamental understanding of project risk management processes but avoids being over prescriptive in the description of the execution of these processes. Instead, there is positive encouragement to use these generic processes as a starting point for elaboration and adaptation to suit the circumstances of a particular application, to innovate and experiment, to simplify and streamline the practical implementation of the generic processes to achieve cost-effective and efficient risk management.
The Authors have made good comparisons between their work and both PRAM and RAMP, as well as with the Project Management Institute's PMBOK 2000. They have developed and named the generic framework SHAMPU (Shape, Harness, and Manage Project Uncertainty) process and compare it with PRAM, RAMP, and PMBOK 2000.

The notion of risk efficiency is central to the theme. All risk management processes consume valuable resources and can themselves constitute a risk to the project that must be effectively managed. The level of investment in risk management within project must be challenged and justified on the level of expected benefit to the overall project.

The Authors document numerous examples drawn from real project experience to substantiate the benefits of a formal process-oriented approach. Ultimately, project risk management is about people making decisions to try to optimize the outcome, being proactive in evaluating risk and the possible responses, using this information to best effect, demonstrating the need for changes in project plans, taking the necessary action and monitoring the effects. Balancing risk and expectation is one of the most challenging aspects of project management. It can also be exciting and offer great satisfaction, provided the project manager is able to operate in a climate of understanding and openness about project risk. The cultural change required in organizations to achieve this can be difficult and lengthy, but there is no doubt that it will be easier to accomplish if risk management processes are better understood and integrated into the practice of project management.

The interesting part of the book is the large number of insights imparted through cases and real-life situations and these are thought provoking. This book is largely about how to achieve effective and efficient risk management in the context of a project. This book is an excellent literature on risk management and will be of interest to all involved in project management.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy on process and insight; light on technique.......2001-09-13

This is the most comprehensive treatment of project risk management processes I have read. The focus is on the process itself, using techniques to illustrate the advice and insights that are heavily interspersed throughout. Because techniques are used to reinforce the information on process and insights this book is better suited for readers who have a good understanding of risk management techniques.

In particular, the scenario analysis sub process is an excellent approach and allows you to go well beyond the typical expected monetary value and probability x impact types of analyses.

The authors assume that you have a good grounding in both probability and fundamental quantitative analysis techniques, and while both probability and a variety of techniques are used as examples they are only superficially explained. The best part of the book, though, is the large number of insights imparted through cases and real-life situations. These are thought-provoking, but require careful reading (especially for American readers who may not be used to the norms of the British vernacular).

If you are interested in a mature project or product risk management process and have some background in risk management this is a five-star book that absolutely should be in your library.

                    Book Description

While there arey a number of overviews of the 41 Presidents of the United States published for the juvenile market, few adult books provide a basic look at each man and his presidency, the context of his time and the major events that shaped him. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Presidents" does just that. You'll learn about each president with the aid of timelines, photographs, trivia and other details.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good material.......2006-01-12

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the presidents are not listed chronilogically. They are grouped together as "Legends" or "Heavyweights" etc. It was sometimes difficult to remember what tariff did what or what law hurt who's presidency if it's not listed in order and you keep having to go back and check. If you can get around that timeline thing than this book is very good for giving great info.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative.......2005-09-21

This is an excellent source for information about the men who have served as Chief-Executive. Some of it is obscure, hence, it makes the subject matter entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Minimalist account of each president.......2003-02-18

The problem with this book is that if one is not somewhat familiar with U.S. history, there will no framework on which to hang the few actions and events that occurred on each president's watch. And the organization of the book contributes to that problem, because the presidents are not presented chronologically. The continuity of events across presidencies gets lost in this book.

The presidents are discussed in five tiers, from the "undisputed champions" to the "tomoto cans." In other words, they are ranked from the best to the worst. After the top tier, there is definitely room to quibble with the ratings. The author is rather vague as to the selection process. As a side note, for this reader what is especially noticeable in this journey through the presidents is the remarkably few really top notch presidents we have had. Most have been rather mediocre.

Contributing to the narrative disorganization of the book is the author's scattering of snippets of presidential facts in boxes on each page that are not necessarily connected to the main text. In addition, despite the modest amount of information that is actually presented in the book, there are several errors in facts and dates and in some cases there is an absence of dates.

For a quick read that will yield a few basic facts, this book will serve that purpose. Beyond that, the book's utility is doubtful.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting synopsis of Presidents' lives.......2002-06-02

This is a very interesting book if you're wanting an overview of Presidential History. It covers the highlights of each president, but of course in about 400 pages, it's simply impossible to go very deep.

The book is arranged, not in chronological order, but in descending order of each president's success in office, as judged by the author, of course. I probably would have preferred a chronological discussion, for the simple reason that it would be easier to view each biographical sketch in it's larger context.

But again, overall it's a good read. I'd suggest it for anyone who is interested in American Presidential History but doesn't want to read multiple books to get the overview he wants.

5 out of 5 stars Great for adults and kids!.......2000-07-24

I bought this for my son's school report on presidents and got hooked myself. This is a fantastic book. Filled with all the facts and information you need to know, but fun to read. Don't take the Idiot's title literally. This is for anyone who wants or needs to know anything there is to know about our greatest, worst, and most mediocre presidents.

How one man changed a nation.

Abraham Lincoln is arguably our most revered president, and the object of much fascination. Many biographies have been written about him, but this is the first book to tackle his legacy—how Lincoln's policies, not just his conduct during the Civil War, impacted the nation, and what changes to government and politics he is remembered for. Includes a concise biography and information on social and cultural legacies, various Lincoln organizations, further reading, online resources, and more.

Even if you think you know all there is to know about Lincoln, this book will contain many revelations. It is way more than a history book. The author thoroughly examines Lincoln's life and analyzes his lasting legacy. I found it very intriguing to learn what a profound effect Lincoln had on the country (and the world) long after his death -- even up to our present times.

This is definitely an engrossing story for readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars The Legacy of Lincoln: Still Felt in Today's World.......2005-10-26

Abraham Lincoln lived more than 100 years ago, but his story is still relevant in our modern world. Lincoln didn't have his success handed to him; he had to go out and earn it, and there were plenty of twists and turns along the way. This rags-to-riches story is something we can all learn from and incorporate into our own lives.

The Legacy of Lincoln takes us from Lincoln's humble beginnings in a small cabin in Kentucky to his presidency and tragic end in 1865. So much of what he accomplished is still felt in our society today. All of these had their beginnings in the Lincoln administration: The Homestead Act, Land Grant Colleges, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the transcontinental railroad, the abolishment of slavery, and much more. Here is a man who truly had the best interest of the American people at heart, and he was willing to fight for the rights and freedoms of ALL people -- rights and freedoms we hold so dear today.

The book also provides extra tidbits such as Lincoln quotes and speeches, trivia, anecdotes, and common misconceptions and myths.

Many thanks to author Pamela Oldham for such an insightful look at both the public and private life of Abraham Lincoln. This book is very readable and gives us a wonderful overview of the man whose life still reverberates in our culture today. It's the perfect book for students first learning about Lincoln, as well as adults wishing to learn more.

                      Book Description

Redolent with the scent of lilac and oleander blossoms, and bursting with the flavors of quinces and overripe plums, Strand of a Thousand Pearls is the story of the imagined and actual marriages of the Azizyan girls, their years of yearning, restless and impatient, and the truth of their engagements, miles away from the enchanted realm and imaginary heroes of their dreams.

Six years ago, Dorit Rabinyan burst onto the scene with Persian Brides, a novel that established her as a writer of incandescent spirit with a gift for spinning wry, magical tales about the vagaries of love and marriage. In Strand of a Thousand Pearls, she has given us a bitter-sweet fable about desires fulfilled and denied—about married love and carnal love, about mother’s love and the kind of love that vanishes one night without warning, like an evaporated dream.

Strand of a Thousand Pearls is the story of Solly and Iran Azizyan and their children: Matti, who believes her dead twin shares her body; Marcelle, who sleeps only two hours a night; Sofia, who marries unhappily and gives birth to a sickly son; Maurice, the only son, born with his heart beating on the wrong side; and Lizzie, who has a most unusual habit. Beautifully written and infused with magic, this novel reads like a fairy tale for grownups.

                      4 out of 5 stars Lyrical storytelling!.......2003-02-25

The story of Iran's family bittersweet. She is married to Solly Azizyan, a fisherman who is very tender with his wife and family. They have four daughters (Sophia with a coughing baby, Marcelle, Lizzie, and Mattie, whose twin brother Moni was stillborn) and one son Maurice. Mattie is brought home from school for her birthday gathering, which becomes the backdrop for the entire flashback of this family's life. As the story develops, it explores how each characecter seeks love and has that wish either fulfilled or denied.

Reminiscent of the writing of Arundhati Roy, the story is told in rich language. It is ripe with exotic smells, sights and sensual references. The story moves back and forth in time from the Matti Azizyan's birthday party to the evolving past. Its characters are intensely interesting. The chapters about the siblings are the most notable in defining this book, showing a sense of family and parent's love that is deep and moving. The end is intense and beautiful but not exactly clear.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing read.......2002-12-03

I tried to get into this book, and at points, I actually succeeded. However, once one 'overlooks' the Old-World superstitions and stories that are not well explained, one is dropped, just as the pearls from the mother's wedding gown. I fought my way through the book and clung to the excuse that the translation into the English language must have watered down its appeal. However, my struggle was not rewarded and once I finally did find myself caring about the characters, the book ended and left me feeling disappointed and disinclined to pick up the sequel (if one is ever written.)

3 out of 5 stars A poetic aura saves a quirky, digressive writing style.......2002-07-25

Dorit Rabinyan had an essentially interesting story to tell. Her writing style is lyrical; her descriptions poetic and quirky and there is also subtle humour. Nonetheless, because the story seems more steeped in Old World practices, beliefs, old wives tales and myths, the quantum leap to modern day seems to come too late. Indeed, for a considerable part of the story the Old World seems to predominate and the family's tales of woe and dysfunction head towards resolution in an all-of-a-sudden manner with little transition.

Unlike Barbara Kingsolver's style of dealing with each character individually, giving each character a voice that clearly gives the reader insight into who s/he is and what that character's individual worldview is (as in "Poisonwood Bible"), Rabinyan's characters are vague and we get to know them from a hazy vantage point, that of Iran, their mother.

She's given to hysterics, loves them and addresses them as "my soul" yet screams and yells about their decisions, their manner of dress, attitudes, and behaviour. Her raison d'etre seems to center around their eventual marriages. Some might think this is a mother's role, yet Iran's indiosyncratic demeanor doesn't endear her to the reader. Her covering the emotional spectrum of loving attention culminates too frequently with tirades directed to each daughter, to the exclusion of Maurice the firstborn and only son. Perhaps because Iran was so young and unsophisticated, she greets his arrival in this world with hysterics about his lack of tears when he cries and considers him dead because he also has no heart.

The only voice of reason is Solly's, her husband. Though a lowly fisherman, he's sensible and loves his children for who they are and seems all but oblivious to the constant turmoil in his household. Iran is the driving force in Solly's life and the life of his family. Though she declines in looks and in her personal care as a result of being overwhelmed by her children's dramas, he's still as mad about her as when he first laid eyes on Iran as she walked along the seaside in Persia (Iran).

The characteristics of each of the Azizyan children border on the bizarre. More than one of them is described as sad or having sad eyes. The surviving Whirling Dervish of a twin lives in her own world with her deceased brother and as a result is sent away to an institution where she is kept zombie like on Ritalin. One sister falls out of love with her husband the day after the wedding although she's pined for him for years; the same sister sleeps throughout her ceremony as a result of an overdose of sleeping pills. Is it any wonder that the reader has a hard time understanding what they are all about and why?

Equally bizarre is the fact that this is an interesting book because of the quirkiness of the storytelling with its disjointed, sometimes hard-to-follow, chronology of events.

An historical novel about a search for rustled cattle and a recounting of earlier Civil War intrigues. John Macpherson, a Civil War naval veteran and Shakespearean actor, braves the American Frontier in quest of adventure and the need to secure his newly acquired land east of El Paso, Texas, hard by the Rio Grande. While Macpherson is building his nascent cattle company, thieves make off with his stock. To retrieve his cattle herd, he is joined by his seafaring brother, James Macpherson, and finds romance and shared memories with the beautiful Maria Hidalgo. Biblical truths are revealed along the journey.

                                          Book Description

The tools needed to make a better, more informed decision.

Decision analysis (DA) is the logic of making a decision using quantitative models of the decider’s factual and value judgments.  DA is already widely used in business, government, medicine, economics, law, and science. However, most resources present only the logic and models rather than demonstrating how these methods can be effectively applied to the real world. This book offers an innovative approach to decision analysis by focusing on decision-making tools that can be utilized immediately to make better, more informed decisions.  It uses no mathematics beyond arithmetic.

Examining how deciders think about their choices, this book provides problem-solving techniques that not only reflect sound modeling but also meet other essential requirements: they build on the thinking and knowledge that deciders already possess; they provide knowledge in a form that people are able and willing to provide; they produce results that the decider can use; and they are based on intimate and continuous interactions with the decider. The methods outlined in this text take into account such factors as the use, the user, the organization, available data, and subjective knowledge.

Replete with exercises, case studies, and observations from the author’s own extensive consulting experience, the book quickly engages readers and enables them to master decision analysis by doing rather than by simply reading. Using familiar situations, it demonstrates how to handle knowledge as it unfolds in the real world. A term project is presented in the final chapter, in which readers can select an actual decision-making problem and apply their newfound tools to prepare a recommendation. A sample report is provided in the appendix.

Beginning with qualitative structuring, the text advances to sophisticated quantitative skills that can be applied in both public and private enterprise, including:

                                          · Modeling decision-making under conditions of uncertainty or multiple objectives

                                          · Risk analysis and assessment

                                          · Communicating and justifying controversial decisions

                                          · Personal life choices and political judgments

                                          · Adapting decision aid to organizations

The book’s broad applicability makes it an excellent resource for any organization or as a textbook for decision-making courses in a variety of fields, including public policy, business management, systems engineering and general education.

An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department or directly from rexvbrown@aol.com.

                                            Book Description

In an increasingly complex world, decision analysis can play a major role in helping decision makers to gain a greater understanding of the problems they face; particularly as research has shown that the decision-making process can often go wrong. This book aims to make decision analysis accessible to managers and administrators in business and public sector organizations.

Written in a user-friendly style and using practical examples, it shows how difficult decisions can be tackled in a structured way so that new insights emerge and a documented and defensible rationale for the decision is established. Extended and updated to include the latest ideas and techniques, new features of this edition include chapters on the analytic hierarchy process, decision framing, scenario planning and how unaided decision makers make decisions, while more exercises and discussion questions have been included at the end of most chapters.

Decision Analysis for Management Judgment is an essentially practical book which draws together ideas from a variety of disciplines — including psychology, management science and statistics. Assuming little or no prior knowledge of these disciplines, it will help both practicing managers faced with the responsibility of making crucial decisions as well as students on management, business administration and decision analysis courses.
