5 out of 5 stars Best Book On People & Leadership I Have Ever Read.......1999-12-01

After 6 years of college and 19 years as an engineer/project manager, I have read many books on leadership. Net: This is the best book on people & leadership I have ever read, and Hal Shook is a true American icon. I have worked with many leaders, some excellent and some right out of Dilbert. This book reminds me of the excellent leader, one who can create a win-win scenario for both employees AND customers. The leaders and companies who implement the Flying Spirit formula will have employees delighted to come to work. This is a MUST READ.

5 out of 5 stars Putting concepts into action, the key to change.......1999-05-26

Flying Spirit is a very good book to add to one's portfolio of resources relating business performance to organizational dynamics. What leaders and managers often fail to recognize is the relationship between product and people. And that to achieve outstanding performance requires that business understand that goals and objectives are only achieved through people.

Another vital concept that Flying Spirit speaks to is the alignment of organizational and individual mission-values-players. In great organizations, there is an alignment of shared purpose. The real differentiation among companies is alignment, look at Southwest Airlines as a model for this.

Hal Shook takes these principles and shows how they worked for him in the military. Good story telling with a key component of execution, making it all happen.

This is a working book. For me highlighted, tabbed and underlined. Very readable. Flying Spirit is an excellent addition to ones "tool kit" for moving organizational leadership and management into the 21st century.

      5 out of 5 stars The sky-writing of a true ace..........1999-02-12

It takes a special outlook to draw lessons from life experience, and a rarer genius still to share the benefits of these lessons with other people. Hal Shook has done both by translating lessons learned in the air to those which can be applied on the ground. It shows you how to walk the talk of leadership where it matters most, in organizational life. Flying Spirit is a flight manual for the workplace, addressing critical issues from values and mission to alignment, problem solving, and team effort, demonstrating that organizations are made of, by, and for people. While the book claims to be a leader's guide to creating great organizations, the underlying message is empowerment of the individuals and teams that make up the organization.

A common complaint of job seekers and leaders alike is that you can't get a job without experience, and you can't get experience without a job. Experience is the said to be a poor teacher, because it gives the test before the lesson. Flying Spirit gives you both at the same time, through vivid anecdotes from the author's experience, concise questions to focus your thinking, useful reference charts, and interactive exercises that translate ideas into action.

After reading this book it will never be so easy to blame the boss or the system, because it shows how adversarial thinking works against everyone. The challenge will be how to apply it where you work, even if it means having to change the place that you work. Wherever you work, this book will show you how to get more out of your work than just a paycheck.

I first met Hal & Marilyn Shook over 20 years ago, attending their course in Career and Life Planning, which they still offer through their company, Life Management Services. The emphasis of the course at that time was individual job search and career development, and I remember thinking at the time that this course empowered individuals to use the same tools of creative strategic planning that organizations used. In Flying Spirit it is as if the tools of career and life planning have been boldly reapplied at the organizational level, so that everyone wins.

An organization imbued with Flying Spirit will have no problem attracting good people. I would like to see individuals encouraged to expect this kind of approach from the organizations they work for. Some things are worth driving a hard bargain for, and this book shows why.

        Book Description

These are not your granny’s granny squares! They’re young, hip, and sometimes not even square. More than 70 contemporary versions come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures, and with fabulous finishing ideas. They’re attractive enough to use as an embellishment on a piece of clothing, as well as in traditional stitched-together projects. Many of the designs appear in different yarn weights and colors, allowing crocheters to personalize any of the items and get exactly the look they’re after. And the wide selection features everything from ponchos and scarves to sweaters and skirts. Easy-to-follow instructions make the projects inviting even for newcomers.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-28

this book is quite a disappointment. The piece shown on the cover is pretty and original, and there is one other nice piece, a throw made of squares that begin with interlaced circles. (Note that I have not tried to make these so I can't say if the pattern is accurate.) there are a few motifs that use interesting ideas, such as a square made from the outside edge inward. But 90 percent of the items shown are clumsy and look crumpled, as though they need to be blocked. You might get a few ideas from looking through the book, but I would not purchase it.

3 out of 5 stars Nice projects with granny squares, poor instructions.......2007-06-06

I had been looking for books that use granny squares to make projects other than afghans (I've made enough of those). This book has both squares and projects.

The squares are OK, but frankly if you want to make afghans, the book by Jan Eaton 200 Crochet Blocks for Blankets, Throws, and Afghans: Crochet Squares to Mix and Match is much better. The New Granny Square does have more blocks for use as flowers, etc. as embellishments, so if that's what you're looking for, this book is great.

The projects are OK. Many of the projects concern appliqueing little motifs on existing clothing. That, I can figure out myself. But there are two projects that I think are just gorgeous: the ribbon block skirt, and the ribbon block T-shirt. This is the kind of project I've been looking for. I was so excited, until I saw the directions. The instructions really only explain how to create the blocks. There is little to no information on how to construct the skirt or t-shirt. The skirt instructions have a diagram for where to place the different colored blocks, but leave out how to make the waistband, cord belt (if you're good, you can figure it out yourself), and how to sew it to a lining. There is also no info on how to create different sizing. The T-shirt instructions just give the directions for the block and say "make 24 blocks". There is no diagram on how to put the blocks together, or info on varying sizing.

This is a book that can give some inspiration, but if you hope to make the projects inside, you have to be confident and experienced enough to "wing it."

4 out of 5 stars Granny Squares with Imagination.......2007-05-14

I am learning to crochet granny squares. This book has great photos of granny squares using color pictures. The granny squares are also in beautiful colored yarns. This gives me inspiration to continue the struggle of making sample swatches for gauge. The weakness is that it omits the use of diagrams. I went to the library for a reference book on crochet instructions with photos and diagrams. Still, I need the psychological encouragement of seeing the photos, reading instructions, and having a biography on the many gifted designers.

Granny Squares with a Victorian twist. Excellent colourful pictures for each item listed. The patterns are easy to follow with clear diections stating suggested materials. The book also gives detail stitch instruction with easy to follow pictures for the less advanced crocheter. The patterns are unique using different yarns and textures. Not only does the book include afghans but pillows, tablecloths and several ideas for home decorating. This is a wonderful book for any person who enjoys making afghans.

In A Common Good: The Friendship of Robert F. Kennedy and Kenneth P. O'Donnell, Helen O'Donnell pays tribute to her father Kenneth and his lifelong friend Bobby Kennedy. Kenneth O'Donnell met Bobby Kennedy at Harvard right after World War II, and the men remained fast friends for the rest of their lives, playing football together, working side by side on political campaigns, and striving to change the world. O'Donnell was a masterful organizer and a forthright political operator, skills that came in handy on many a campaign trail. He helped John F. Kennedy through several elections and finally served as his gatekeeper in the White House, the man who decided who got access to the president and when they got it. He came to be called "the Cobra" in the White House because of the fierce way he guarded the president's time. O'Donnell writes that her father was also involved in many policy decisions, and that despite their different socioeconomic backgrounds, the Kennedy and O'Donnell families were close. Because of O'Donnell's family connections and her access to the normally closed Kennedy archives, this book contains lots of behind-the-scenes information about the Kennedy campaigns and the intersecting lives of the two families. The untimely deaths of John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy shattered Kenneth O'Donnell. He took to drinking, staged two unsuccessful campaigns for governor of Massachusetts, and died young. At its heart, this is a very sad book about a man who lost his best friend and then didn't know what to do with himself. --Jill Marquis

              Book Description

Kenneth O'Donnell was JFK's chief-of-staff and the co-author of Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye. In this intimate, revealing memoir of his long friendship with Bobby Kennedy, his daughter, Helen, honors his wish that RFK be remembered as the man Ken O'Donnell knew him to be.

Kenny and Bobby met at Harvard in 1947, where they were both members of the football and debate teams. It was the beginning of a relationship that would end only with Bobby's death. The two friends spent years at the epicenter of American politics, sharing highs and lows: JFK's ascent to the presidency; Bobby's stormy tenure as chairman of several congressional committees exploring controversial issues and later as Attorney General, locking horns with J. Edgar Hoover and Jimmy Hoffa; and JFK's assassination.

Much of the material in this poignant, illuminating memoir has never before been told. The Kennedys granted Helen O'Donnell complete access to the family archives, and encouraged many people who have never before spoken out to cooperate with her.

The result is A Common Good, an intimate look at a unique relationship. Ken O'Donnell was there when Camelot began -- and when it ended in violence. In honoring her father's request, Helen O'Donnell has shared with us her profound insights into the emotional relationship of two men at the center of American history in the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on RFK and JFK.......2005-12-23

This is a very well written and, at times, touching book by (former JFK Chief of Staff) Kenny O'Donnell's daughter Helen (with a little help from former DNC advance man Jerry Bruno and her late father's audio tapes). There is great information about Kenny's relationship with RFK and, to a leser extent, JFK. As the elading civilian expert on the Secret Service, one word of caution, though: she misspells Secret Service agent Jerry Behn's name as "Bain" and she concludes that her father had a hand in planning JFK's Dallas motorcade route-he did not.

              5 out of 5 stars very exciting.......2003-06-15

this book tells us about rfk,jfk and kenny o'donnel. it tells us about how they were, and it's very interessing. I suggest it to all people who are fan of the keenedys, like me. there are a few rares photos.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful memories.......2002-07-25

I used to work with the author's uncle, Cleo, who also plays a large part in this book. Over lunch and sometimes drinks after work, he used to tell us some of the wonderful stories of his and his brother's friendship with the Kennedy brothers. When I saw this book, I had to get it and it is bringing back wonderful memories of 25 years ago in Boston. In fact, if I am not mistaken, the author herself may have helped out in the office once or twice during school vacations. In any case, if you are a Kennedy fan, this is a touching, well-written book full of warmth and good stories about the Kennedys' and O'Donnells' as real people, written by someone who knew them. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars A STERLING EXAMPLE OF FRIENDSHIP.......2000-08-03

Kenny O'Donnell has done an outstanding job of providing insight to a man who figured largely in world history. He has drawn a very real, very strong portrait of a man who set and met many personal goals in his personal and professional life. Robert Kennedy was, in my opinion the most interesting of his brothers. Mr. O'Donnell does an excellent job of describing the aura of sincerity Robert Kennedy exuded. He helps bring a man into focus who has been dead for many years by describing the consistencies of his character. Robert Kennedy was clearly a very driven, very determined and very hard working man. He was also a very caring, very committed and very compassionate as well. He was a central figure in world history and I think the late Senator's works have certainly influenced the world for the better. This book is definitely worth reading.

              5 out of 5 stars The well-oiled Kennedy machine.......2000-05-04

A Common Good is an enjoyable, fast-paced read. It is a warm portrayl of Bobby, Jack and Kenny O'Donnel as people. There are laughs and poignant moments. It s a must for anyone interested in Robert Kennedy.

FEELING LIKE A PERPETUAL PRISONER OF WORK?

Here are seven keys to set yourself free -- without having to quit your job. Your job is supposed to be what you do for a living. Yet, increasingly these days, our employers act as if our primary purpose in living. As a result, it all too often tends to crowd out all other essential aspects of our existence -- not only family relationships, but a sense of personal identity.

So, rather than take that job and shove it, you can instead take that job and rise above it -- and all by taking a more objective approach to your work.

                  5 out of 5 stars A straightforward self-help guide.......2004-12-06

Entrepreneur and management consultant Anthony Zolezzi presents The Detachment Paradox, a straightforward self-help guide for business and personal life. Written in direct response to a modern work culture in which employers frequently behave as though one's job should be one's primary purpose in life, The Detachment Paradox shows the reader how to balance career and personal life by taking an objective approach to one's work. Chapters address how to alleviate the fear of being fired by forming connections with people; learning to incorporate humor into one's life; learning how to let go of the need to control things; and much more. Highly recommended in the especially for the pressure-filled working world of the twenty-first century.

                  5 out of 5 stars A life changing book.......2004-09-22

The Detachment Paradox is a must read for anyone stuck in the day-to-day drudgery of work. Even though Zolezzi's book is focused on the burned out corporate employee, his 'keys' can be applied to just about any job where there is a boss or an owner and employees.
The book helped me be more objective about my job and really helped me look at what was important in my life. It is currently leading me down a new career path - something I didn't think I'd be doing for awhile. The book also helped me to create a personal mission statement and really define who I am and what I am about. It taught me how to deal with a job that I needed but didn't necessarily want anymore. It showed me how to focus on what was important at work while I was there, but to leave it behind and focus on what was really important to me when I left work. Need a change? This book will help. I've also been able to apply his keys to other aspects of my life, not just work!
