      Book Description

Essential Australian Management Law provides a clear and concise guide to the key elements in the law syllabus. The book is written specifically for law students, primarily at undergraduate level, but it will also be helpful to students studying law as part of their course. Each chapter opens with a checklist of the areas covered in that part of the book, and the following text provides an easily assimilable discussion of the important principles of the topic in question.

By avoiding the complexities of many textbooks, Essential Australian Management Law aims to provide students with a clear understanding of the law, so that they can then build on their knowledge by reference to recent cases, legislation and academic articles referred to in the texts, returning to this book for revision purposes.

        Book Description

With the endless amount of junk mail, spam, billboards, flyers, telemarketers, and commercials to which consumers are subjected, graphic designers must come up with ingenious ideas to cut through the clutter.

This book includes the A-list of projects that have found a way to grab the attention of their audiences, despite all the stimuli that can get in the way. These promotions overcome the recipients' knee-jerk reaction to toss them in the trash. It isn't easy to do. In the past, giving something away for free was the ticket to success, however this approach is no longer effective because everyone knows that if it's free, it's usually junk.

Those with the magic formula engage recipients by attacking their senses through humor, tactile effects, unexpected surprises, interactive measures, and lush or inviting materials or images, but they still need a clever concept to really drive the whole experience. It's a difficult challenge, and this book features wonderful examples of work that accomplishes just that.

          Book Description

Anxiety in children and adolescents is expected and normal at specific times in development. If anxieties become severe and begin to interfere with the daily activities of childhood, such as separating from parents, attending school and making friends, evidence shows that a treatment program based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy can help. Written by the developers of an empirically supported and effective CBT program for treating adolescents with Social Anxiety Disorder, this therapist guide includes all the information and materials necessary to implement successful treatment with groups. The treatment described is research-based with a proven success-rate when used in a group therapy setting. The renowned authors provide clinicians with step-by-step instructions for teaching their adolescent clients skills that have been scientifically tested and shown to be effective in treating SAD, as well as shyness, lack of assertiveness, or introversion. Designed to be used with the corresponding workbook, this guide outlines a two-phase program focusing on skill development and exposure exercises. When used together, both books form a complete treatment package that can be successfully used by practicing mental health professionals.

1 out of 5 stars not for the "painfully shy".......2007-09-03

I think this book is mis-named. It should be called, "Talking with Confidence for those who are just a little bit shy." The author doesn't seem to have any idea what it is like to be "painfully shy". This book is NOT going to help someone who is truly "painfully shy". Maybe it would help someone who just has a tiny bit of social awkwardness but certainly not the "painfully shy", as it claims in the title. I was extremely dissapointed

2 out of 5 stars Seems out of touch with the painfully shy.......2003-12-06

The book has a few tips for what to say in various situations. Maybe they would be useful (or at least good for a laugh) for a person who doesn't have shyness problems. But the book doesn't address anything at all about overcoming the problem of shyness. Shy people experience pain and sometimes even panic in social situations. Simply telling them to "have a positive attitude" doesn't solve the problem - we need to know how!

So I'm still looking for a good book on the subject.

          1 out of 5 stars Very bad.......2002-06-06

This audiobook was definitely a waste of time to listen to. Everything is commonsense, and not inspiring at all. Personally, I like books and tapes that pump you up, but in an intelligent way. This has none of that, and the ideas contained in this tape aren't worth spending your time on (ie. everybody already knows them, and it doesn't take a person with a university degree or PHD to explain them to you).

          1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-08-23

I was eagerly looking forward to this book, but am very disappointed by it. I just received it today, and though admittedly I haven't had time to read it fully, I have skimmed the topics and several dozen pages, and I'm not even going to bother reading it. This book would seem to be useless to anyone but a yuppie business executive holding million-dollar meetings and having power lunches. And obtaining such a position would seem to me to require a reasonably outgoing, aggressive personality, not the painfully shy person to which this book is allegedly directed. Oh, there's also sections on how to meet with difficult clients, and how to become a master salesman. All topics of great interest to a painfully shy person (I'm being sarcastic, of course). If you want a book by this author, buy his other book, How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends. It's much better, and has lots of halfway amusing cartoons. Gabor has completely missed the mark with Talking With Confidence For the Painfully Shy. Avoid it.

1 out of 5 stars Unrealistic and too brief.......2000-04-25

I agree that the situations and phrases described and prescribed in this book are tacky and unrealistic. Some of the advice would push someone further into their shyness shell because of the reactions they would get. Not recommended. So many of these self-help books are so unrealistic as applied to real life situations. Why is that?

                  Book Description

I think adults miss something very important about teenagers. They think teenagers are dangerous I little vortexes of evil. I. But my friends and I have so much more we'd rather do than waste time gathering guns and ammunition and stuff. My friends and I are not harmful. But inconsiderate treatment can stir to terrible action those who are." -- John, 15

"We are human beings, not machines. A person can only take so much before reaching a breaking point." -- Jill, 19

We've all seen the newspaper stories, watched the TV dramas unfold. They're everywhere, it seems: teenagers who shoot classmates in schools, who molest children, who commit suicide or cut themselves or give birth in secret and leave babies on doorsteps or in Dumpsters, Are these teenagers born bad -- or did something happen to make them act this way? Why do teens today feel so angry, so full of pain, so alone?

Listen to the voices of teenagers as they comment, candidly, on teens in trouble. The experts, those who study these difficult issues and discuss them in the media, draw their own conclusions. The teens here tell it like it is.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  3 out of 5 stars adequate monsters.......2004-09-21

As a collection of stories, this one is adequate. The stories themselves are realistic but seem to be taken from a small unrepresentative portion of society as there are a lot of important teen issues that don't even garner a mention. What is included is well written, but as someone who has worked with teens in crisis for years, I was disappointed that there wasn't more to this book than there was.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not comprehensive.......2002-02-12

We're Not Monsters is a excellent, factual portrayal of many of the issues facing teens today. For each topic, there is a wide variety of resources, from basic information and statistics to stories and quotes from other teens. It also clearly explains what a concerned friend can do and gets into some of the social issues involved and potential areas for advocacy. One major gripe that kept me from giving 5 stars: a lot of common, important teen issues (eating disorders for example) aren't covered in here. I was happy with the chapters on teen suicide and self-injury (both topics are near and dear to my heart), and the section on killer teens was interesting, but I was disappointed that the chapter on teen abusers didn't include more information for victims of abuse, and the chapter on teen pregnancy left a lot of potential avenues unexplored. Overall, though, I would recommend this book to teens in trouble, their friends, concerned adults, and anyone curious about what's going on with troubled teens.

                    Book Description

Virtual Project Management: Software Solutions for Today and the Future explores the technical management issues involved in the revolutionary new way of building complex software intensive systems faster and cheaper by employing the power of distributed operations. The book examines the implementation issues that cut deep inside present day collocated engineering organizations and recommends practical and affordable actions to aid organizations seeking increased productivity through distributed operations. The demand for integrated solutions constructed from a combination of existing and newly developed software increases daily. Many organizations find themselves with shortages of the critical skills necessary to compete in many of these newly created markets. Employing virtual collaborative development provides a dramatic increase in a company's opportunities to successfully compete. Virtual collaboration provides a broader skill and product knowledge base coupled with a deeper pool of personnel to potentially employ. It removes two of the major barriers - company affiliation and physical location. Virtual Project Management: Software Solutions for Today and the Future focuses on critical characteristics underlying how work actually gets done in traditional collocated engineering environments. It examines the changes taking place on virtual projects through a series of anecdotes based on real project experiences. The book provides an 8 step practical and affordable plan that can be used as a framework in either setting up and executing a new virtual project, or in instituting improvements to a project that has drifted off course. Others have lived through the pain of learning lessons the hard way. You don't need to follow their path. The insights and solutions offered by Paul McMahon answer the questions virtual project leaders will be asking well into the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time - especially relevant today.......2004-03-07

When this book was first published nearly four years ago from the date of this review, it addressed a narrow niche - managing virtual teams in large-scale engineering projects. Moreover, the book is more biased towards product management than project management, although there is considerable overlap in the two domains. Fast forward to today, and the material no longer addresses a narrow niche, making this book an important resource to a much wider audience. I am evaluating this book from the perspective of an IT professional, and see the audience as follows:
                    - project and program managers overseeing development that has been outsourced to off-shore providers, especially in the IT environment
                    - IT professionals who have (or are in danger of) losing their jobs because of the trend towards off shore outsourcing. Managing virtual teams is a viable, alternative career option in which this audience segment can employ their technical knowledge and gain the management knowledge to be successful.
                    - executive management exploring the feasibility, risks and challenges of outsourcing to off shore providers and who are seeking a management strategy for making it work

Of course, the audience is wider than I've cited, and the best way to determine if you are among it I'm giving my assessment of the knowledge and approach the book imparts. First, the author weaves in cases, personal experience and anecdotal stories into the text making the book highly readable. He approaches the way to establish and effectively manage a virtual team by focusing on the key barriers and offering solutions.

The biggest barriers are communication and cultural differences (both company and human varieties), so much of the book is devoted to overcoming those in all of their forms. I particularly liked the knowledge dissemination and retention strategies the author provides because knowledge management is directly linked to communication, but is an often overlooked element that will make or break a geographically and culturally dispersed team's success. The core of this book, however, is the structured and methodical eight-step framework in which you can establish a virtual team. This framework has the following steps:

1 - Careful selection of team leaders with an emphasis on leadership and conflict resolution skills.
2 - A clearly defined architecture upon which work splitting and tasking are based.
3 - Develop a build plan and ensure that the proper supporting infrastructure is in place.
4 - Establish and enforce communication rules.
5 - Identify and implement the low level project organization.
6 - Detailed planning that takes into account all elements of the virtual team.
7 - Test the organizational concept.
                    8 - Execute.

For each of the above steps the author provides in-depth details, challenges and how to overcome them, and supporting rationale. In addition, the appendices in this book are invaluable in that they contain templates, checklists, and other information that fleshes out what is required to effectively manage a virtual team. Appendix L, "Synopsis of 34 Insights and 50 Solutions", is especially valuable because it summarizes the key challenges of virtual team management.

Vanity Fair writer Gail Sheehy's engrossing biography of Hillary Clinton is a refreshing departure from the political hit jobs that have appeared elsewhere in print. That's not to say Hillary's Choice is a pro-Clinton book--Hillary herself would probably bristle at reading it, and her husband ("The story of the Clinton presidency has always been the story of the Clinton marriage," writes Sheehy) comes off as a bright but demented cad. Yet Hillary's Choice is broadly sympathetic and often nonjudgmental at crucial moments. Sheehy writes very little about public policy, but includes plenty of pop psychologizing. She suggests that the president is a sex addict afflicted by what "a highly qualified mental health professional who works too close to the White House to be identified" calls "dissociative identities"--what used to be known as "multiple personalities ... a sum of various identities that have been split off at some time in the past." And the president gets away with so much in his personal life because Hillary has become his unwitting enabler: "Every addict or alcoholic needs one. The enabler is usually an intimate of the addicted person who allows him to persist in self-destructive behavior by making excuses or helping him avoid the consequences of his actions."

That describes Sheehy's Hillary perfectly: a woman apparently ignorant of her husband's several flings in the White House before Monica Lewinsky came along, and then willfully deceived by the president's lies until just hours before his momentous grand-jury testimony. Theirs is a mother-son relationship in which true love must negotiate its way through astonishingly difficult periods. That's not a formula for how marriage ought to work, but it has nevertheless helped this ultimate power couple achieve enormous success. Hillary's Choice is full of on-the-record and background interviews, all assembled in an absorbing narrative. Writes Sheehy: "The saga of Bill and Hillary, with its echoes of Eleanor and Franklin, or Tracy and Hepburn with undertones of Bonnie and Clyde, is animated by melodrama, high passion, narrow escapes, and knock-down-drag-outs." And it comes alive in this biography of the most enigmatic woman of our time. --John J. Miller

Since the Starr report, the nature of the relationship between Bill and Hillary Clinton has been more hotly disputed than ever. Are they a cold, calculating partnership? A sex addict and his enabler? A long-suffering, lamp-throwing wife and her straying husband? Evacuating the private saga of America's most public marriage, Gail Sheehy takes the Clintons from the moment their eyes met (in school) through the incalculable humiliation of the Lewinsky affair and the drama of the impeachment battle. Sheehy reveals the power shifts, the passion, and the price Hillary has paid as well as her choices and their consequences.

I must really confess that I can,t stand either women, either the author or the Clinton.
When in college I was forced to read the Rhetoric by Aristotle.Thank goodness, he went on and on and on about how a speaker must first establish her/his reputation and give reasons why she/he should be listened to.
Isn,t this the same Gail Sheehey who plagarized (read stole) important parts of her first novel Passages from a UCLA Psychiatry professor who was doing research on the subject. She settled out of court wisely, gave the good Dr. some dough, and must have laughed all the way to the bank. That was a long time ago and like Hilary she thought "wow, I can steal a lot of good stuff, not use some of it, pay the guy off and make a fortune." She has churned out book after book, none very good. She should have gone into politics in another country.Obviously, i was biased against the book but tried hard, really, to see if it had many redeeming qualities.
There is a great deal of factual information about Hilary, her childhood, her relationship with BIll but the interpretations of why she is motivated to do such and such are pretty shabby. I am a psychiatrist and find her attempts at divining both CLinton,s adult personalities from their childhood truamas pathetic guesswork by an amateur. I dont, think the Clinton,s can really stand each other, has anyone seen ANY genuine affection between them for all the time they,ve been on the world stage? They stay together for political and financial reasons and both seem to have very small conscienses while now both getting filthy rich.
Too be totally fair, some parts of the book are very interesting about many factual occurences Mrs.Clinton background but it didn,t change my mind about the author or the politician.

"Hillary's choice is not to know what she knows." ..... A very enlightening account. ...... A "must read".

I have had the dubious pleasure of reading and rereading quite a number of works addressing the life and times of Hillary Clinton.
While I am not a great fan of Billie, I must admit to sort of an admiration for Hillary. Be-that-as-it-may, I enjoyed this book. It was well written and I thought pretty well ballanced. Many of the "facts" presented, will have to be tested by time, but for now, I feel they are probably as close to the truth we will get.
Ms Clinton is certainly one of the more fascinating individuals of our times and I am quite sure history will continue to judge her as such. She is an interesting subject. In many ways, she is us. The author of this book is an interesting writer and between the author and the subject, we get a very interesting story. Thank you Ms Gail for writing it.

2 out of 5 stars Biased and Damaging.......2001-09-14

Believe it or not, I am one of the few in the country that is not intimately familiar with all of the scandals of the Clinton presidency. I had hoped that, in reading this book, I would understand a little bit more in depth what had happened to have the nation in an uproar and gain some valuable insights to Hillary Clinton. Unfortunately, the bias is so evident in this book that I know that I do not have a complete picture as to what actually happened.

In Ms. Sheehy's eyes, Clinton is a proverbial villian and she just assumes everyone else feels the same way too. While she could still present her case against him and not interfere with the integrity of the story, she takes every opportunity to make jibes and call him names. It is hardly objective to call him a philanderer incessantly - whether he is or not. However, the main problem with this attitude is that she lets this get in the way of reporting the evidence fairly. For instance, she makes reference to the stories of the State Trooper's quite frequently. She is overly eager to use their stories against Bill when it concerns his affairs. However, when the same sources indicate that there was an affair with Vince Foster by Hillary, she refutes their legitimacy. Then she goes on to refer to their allegations against Bill, seeming to forget that they also made allegations against Hillary. Which is it? Were they really discredited? Were parts discredited? If so, what parts and how? If they were discredited, why include a remark from an alarmed Bill Clinton to the effect that the AR governor should not be upset because he controls the state police? This only legitimizes their stories which gets us back to, so what's the deal with Vince Foster? As you can see, this book left me with many more questions than were answered.

While I do have a clearer picture of Hillary Clinton, the picture painted of her while in the White House, gives me serious reservation about how she would act if she was actually the President. If this book's assertion that there was really nothing to hide is true, it means that Ms. Clinton can not be trusted to be forthcoming when she believes that the hand is being called - even if she knows she has a winning hand. It would have made more sense to lay out the evidence against her and then give her argument as to specifically why she was withholding evidence. Maybe I could have seen myself doing the same thing if faced with the same situation but this is presented as a woman's grudge against the media for no justifiable reason. Of course, she also nevers really hits the question as to whether records were withheld by Mrs. Clinton. She spends a few paragraphs on the possible reasons an administrative assistant might not come forward with a box if she had been asked to find it and, not finding it, found it under her desk months later. After spending almost a hundred pages on her early life and college years, couldn't we spare a few to address the questions that would undoubtedly be brought up by events during the presidency? It simply doesn' hold water in my opinion. People have to have a reason for doing what they do. Especially people with advisors.

This book really has nothing to do with Hillary or the Clintons -- it has everything to do with Gail Sheehy - her mean-spiritedness, her willingness to gossip, her jealousy, her arrogance, her pain. This book is not good journalism -- not recommended for anyone to read.

                                  Book Description

If there's anything you might want to know about life in rural Vermont, here's your chance to get a straight from the horse's mouth, seventh generation point of view.

From the perils of the country backroad to the pros and cons of contact lenses for chickens, the author takes a fond, if somewhat jaundiced look at the world she grew up in.
