4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive view of manufacturing, concepts and techniques.......1998-10-07

Mahoney's book can be considered an excellent reference work for individuals in the field of manufacturing literature. It contains information on almost every manufacturing concept or idea presented in the last 50 years.

The author, R. Michael Mahoney's, years of experience and training as an engineer are evident throughout the work. The book is written in a straightforward style. Material is presented matter-of-factly. Many explanations are provided in the form of over a hundred charts, graphs, tables, Venn diagrams, and mathematical equations.

"High-Mix, Low-Volume Manufacturing" is not a casual read. It is meant to be analyzed and studied in order to gain the insights described within the text. Mahoney details concepts and ideas in order to help the reader understand the techniques and tools needed to successfully operate in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing operation. The best approach to the work is to read it in stages. This allows the reader to fully grasp and understand the topics discussed prior to reading to another section. The work is well positioned as a reference book

4 out of 5 stars A Straight Forward Story Of A Tibetan Citizen.......2005-09-30

I always innately knew that my culture and people weren't the most democratic one. I wasn't shocked of the inequality and corruption that is clearly mentioned in Mr. Tashi Tsering la's autobiography. Some Tibetans will hate this book because it exposes our society as it is, especially the offsprings of the Aritocratic families and may be some monks. My believe is that Tashi Tsering has provided more for the people of Tibet than the officials working in the Tibetan Government-In-Exile based in Dharamsala.

Tashi Tsering represents the lay people in Tibet. This book is a must-read for the younger Tibetans to get perspective of the Tibet before the Chinese Invasion. I am by no means supporting the Chinese Invasion of Tibet which has literally almost exterminated our people and our country but Tibet before the Chinese Invasion wasn't a perfect country as it is often said to be. Please read this book if you want to stay away from many fabricated supercilious stories of Tibet.

5 out of 5 stars The real story........2002-02-22

There's not "one" story about Tibet, of course. Like any other human drama, especially one which has proven so emotional for those involved, there are a thousand stories from a thousand people.

But Tashi Tsering's story is an important one. He brings voice to a perspective that has been silenced for far too long in the West. I would recommend this book strongly to anyone who feels they already "know" all there is to know about Tibet; odds are, you're wrong.

Instead of using my own words... let me quote a few paragraphs from the book:

"He responded unequivocally that his decision [to return to Tibet from the University of Washington in 1963] had nothing to do with money. Instead he saw himself as a representative of the common people who wanted to help create a new, modern Tibet. The atmosphere became somewhat tense, since the other Tibetans, who were aristocrats, hated the communists and China and were committed to freeing Tibet forom Chinese control."

                        ...

[Many years later, after 1985, on one of Melvyn Goldstein's trips to China]

"On one of my trips, Tashi surprised me by asking if I could help him publish a book about his life. He thought foreigners needed to know about common Tibetans - that is, Tibetans who were not aristocrats or monastic prelates or incarnate lamas. He felt his story could play a useful role in assisting both Westerners and young Tibetans born in exile to understand the real - non-Shangrila - Tibet."

5 out of 5 stars Tibet--Not just the land of monks, nomads and Austrians!.......1999-02-14

Finally a book that treats Tibet as a nation and a people in history and not just a land of changeless Buddhism and nomads! The book was dropped quietly from the publisher/distributor Snow Lion after initial fan-fare when it was discovered that this Tibetan author, though fervently pro-Tibet, was equally fervent against the rule of the Dge-lugspa (the Dalai Lama's sect), and he describes in detail what he had to suffer as a member of the Dalai Lama's personal dance troup. Kudos to Tashi Tsering for telling his incredible story!

                        5 out of 5 stars Riveting.......1998-07-31

I finished reading this book in 3 consecutive nights. Fascinating account of a 10-year-old boy becoming a member of the Dalai Lama's personal dance troupe as a tax obligation; how the boy grew up, worked for the exiled noble Tibetan leadership, and eventually became a Red Guard--this is the first time I've learned that there are many Tibetan red guards during the Cultural Revolution, the reasons why these Tibetans try to better their old serf-noble society, and why they joined the misguided Cultural Revolution. At the end I can't help but feel utmost respect for Mr. Tsering. Even though he's made mistakes, he freely admits to them. The amount of trauma he has gone through in his life is beyond what many people can take, yet he perseveres. Now I fully support his goal: establishing schools in Tibet for the Tibetan children. Bravo, Mr. Tsering. I hope someday this life story will be made into a movie. It will be much more intelligent than 7 Years In Tibet. Instead! of a fluff story about the "dumb natives", here is one intelligent, complex Tibetan.

                        5 out of 5 stars This is a poignant autobiography of a non-Buddhist Tibetan........1998-07-11

Tashi Tsering was born a Tibetan peasant but realized early in life that he wanted an education and was able to attain this in India and America. As a young Tibetan patriot and idealist he went to China in the l960s believing that Communism could actually be a help to his country. Instead he spent many years of suffering and deprivation in Chinese jails and internal exile. Ultimately he was set free to open schools in Tibet. Fascinating to read, this book's broader lesson is about the interplay of power between the communists, the Tibetan peasants, and the Tibetan aristochracy (who want all power for themselves) and the Buddhist church hierarchy.

                          Book Description

Between my home in Topeka on the eastern edge of the Flint Hills and Hope on the western side, there are 100 miles of prairie and sky. This tallgrass land has sheltered my people for generations. It has taunted us and calmed us, broken us and nurtured us, starved us and fed us. It is our span over birth, growth, and death. Death, which beckons now to my Mother.

So begins Carol Brunner Rutledge's diary of the three months preceding the death of her mother Alice, whose entire life was lived in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Like Terry Tempest Williams's Refuge, it unites a profound reverence for nature with a moving testament of a daughter's love for her dying mother.

With quiet eloquence Rutledge celebrates her mother's life and guides us on a journey from anguish and doubt through self-discovery and healing. In the tradition of earlier plainswomen, she fuses deeply personal emotions with universal themes tied to family, community, religion, and work--amidst the stark beauty of the Flint Hills.

Rutledge vividly describes the people and the seasons of the prairie, providing insight into how generations of tallgrass people have related to the land. She offers nostalgic memories of her childhood and family history, as well as reflections on the Kansas pioneer spirit and its special brand of humor.

Rutledge also records with excruciating honesty her frustration at the insensitivity of medical professionals who ignore her mother's strong spirit while continuing to labor over a body that no longer works. Rising above these false hopes, mother and daughter forge an even stronger bond as they come to understand that dying is a natural part of living.

On the road between Hope and home, between the callously impersonal world of high-tech medicine and the healing rhythms of nature, Rutledge meditates on the mysteries of death and finds refuge in the vast prairie landscape: Tonight on the prairie, as every time I go back and forth between the hospital and home, I am well aware I am just one small speck in the midst of the grasslands. I am not in charge of everything, and those things I am in charge of are quite insignificant. I cannot take my Mother's dying and make her well. I cannot fix it this time. How unbelievably comforting it is to be only one small part of this vast land and how safe to be a part of this mysterious happening which I don't have to control.

Throughout, the silent, powerful prairie provides solace and strength. By diary's end, at the end of her lonely travels back and forth across the prairielands, Rutledge and her mother have finally made peace with the inevitability of loss and accepted death on its own terms. Ultimately, her words remind us that in the end "love is all that matters."

                          Book Description

Misaligned companies, like cars out of alignment, can develop serious problems if not corrected quickly. They are hard to steer and don't respond well to changes in direction. This groundbreaking book shows you how to get -and keep -all the vital elements of your organization aligned and headed in the same direction at the same time.

Managers must now keep their people centered in the midst of change, deemphasize hierarchy, and distribute leadership by distributing authority, information, knowledge, and customer data throughout their organization. Alignment is a response to the new business reality where customer requirements are in flux, where competitive forces are turbulent, and where the bond of loyalty between an organization and its people has been weakened. The old linear approach to management has given way to one of simultaneity -to alignment.

As pioneers of the alignment concept, the authors have developed this unique approach based on their work with leading companies throughout the world. The Power of Alignment is packed with war stories and the firsthand perspectives of industry leaders. You'll learn how world-class organizations, including Federal Express, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Columbia/HCA Healthcare, Citizens Utilities, AirTouch, and UNUM achieved extraordinary business results. Now, through the authors' expertise, you'll see how alignment can work for your organization.

In essence, alignment links the five key elements of an organization -people, process, customers, business strategies, and, of course, leadership -to obtain breakthrough results, chief among them, sustained growth and profit, loyal customers, and a high-performing work force. The Power of Alignment:
                          * Offers a clear framework for aligning and linking the crucial elements that build and sustain a company's success
                          * Provides self-assessment tools as well as benchmarking measures for evaluating an organization's critical competencies
                          * Enables managers to create a work force where each employee can relate his or her activities to the goals and strategic objectives of the company
                          * Helps a company determine when and where it is out of alignment, and gives descriptions of such common company pathologies as "The Phantom Limb Syndrome," "Strategy Interruptus," and "Dead Man Walking"
                          * Prescribes specific steps for getting an organization back on track toward a single, shared vision of its goals

Essential reading for all managers and executives, The Power of Alignment offers a new way to reestablish focus and sustained energy, and is a dynamic approach for staying balanced and achieving extraordinary levels of performance.

"This book is savvy, detailed, timely, and clearly written. I highly recommend it for any leader facing the challenges posed by global business today." - Dana Mead Chairman and CEO, Tenneco Former Chairman National Association of Manufacturers

"It's not only the stars that have to be in alignment to reach your destination, it's all the internal processes, rewards, and drivers. Read The Power of Alignment, and while you may not unlock the secrets of the universe, you will overcome the barriers to corporate success." - William L. Boyan President and COO John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company.

"This important book goes beyond TQM and reengineering by creating a new approach called Alignment. The authors show that great companies manage to link strategy and people and integrate customer needs with continuous improvement processes." - Peter Augustsson President and Group Chief Executive AB SKF.

"The Power of Alignment gets to the heart of a critical element of organizational leadership, namely focus. Every leader who reads it will undoubtedly do some serious soul-searching about the consistency of corporate vision, goals, management systems, and incentive mechanisms." - Louis E. Lataif Dean Boston University School of Management.

5 out of 5 stars As significant today as it was when first published.......2007-08-26

After reviewing several books on Strategic Execution, I was continuously left with the feeling that the authors had ommitted a key ingredient. This book has convinced me that that key ingredient was "Alignment".
This book was published 10 years ago (OK, I am embarrassed that I have only just got around to reading it) but it is as significant today as it was when it was first published. Probably more so considering the rapid state of change that most companies are faced with today.
It is a simple read, and the concepts are easy to follow. What I enjoyed most about the book is that the suggestions are practical and you can take them and implement them immediately within an organization.
I noticed that one of the readers who has reviewed the book said that the book was required reading for his MBA course. 10 years on, I still think it should be required reading for any business executive.

5 out of 5 stars This Is a Great Resource!.......2007-07-10

I'm always looking for visual ways of understanding critical elements of strategy. The Power of Alignment offers a very helpful way of thinking about four important ingredients in keeping the main thing, the main thing. Vertical alignment, the relationship between your strategy and the people on your team, "energizes...provides direction, and offers opportunity for involvement." Horizontal alignment refers to the connection between your processes and customers. Taken together the two measures provide some great insight into the development of genuine alignment.

One of the most interesting elements of the book is a 16 question diagnostic tool that is designed to provide a graphic view of your organization's alignment. Very helpful!

5 out of 5 stars Make Sure That Everything You Do Points To Success !.......2006-05-03

Great book! The basic premise is that once a business has a raison d'etre, or a 'main thing', that profits are maximized by the alignment of four key business areas: Strategy, Processes, People, and Customers. Built on this premise are actionalbe ways to build a self-aligning organization. I got the sense of discovering truth while I read this book. Leadership isn't really about power, it is about responsibility. This book shows a manager at any level how to align his area to the overall strategy of the company and to the end products of the company. It shows how processes should be designed and what factors should be used to reward, recognize and evaluate employees. Great food for thought and realistic to implement.

                          Five Stars

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Organizational Focus.......2003-05-28

Quite simply, this book was one of the best business management and leadership books I have ever read. It was well-written and expertly balanced management and leadership concepts with real-world examples of effectively aligned organizations, such as Federal Express and Southwest Airlines. This book should be read and discussed by leaders and managers at all levels, especially by mid- to senior-level executives.

In brief, alignment deals with the relationships among the people, processes, strategy, and customers of an organization relative to that organization's purpose, or what the authors called "the main thing." Alignment is both a noun, a state of being, and a verb, a set of actions. Vertical alignment connects organizational strategy with the people responsible for transforming that strategy into meaningful work. Horizontal alignment deals with understanding your customers' wants and then creating processes to deliver what your customers want, when and how they want it. Effective leadership nurtures the organizational culture that is built around and upon "the main thing," and it is this culture and leadership combination that drives and sustains self-aligning organizations in turbulent times.

The authors' analogy of landing a plane helped me to visualize the dynamics involved with organizational alignment. To land a plane, a pilot must adjust and react to multiple simultaneous factors and conditions (i.e. air speed, altitude, angle of approach, wind speed and direction, etc.) and then understand how a change in one will affect the others. Likewise, to align an organization, a leader must adjust and react to feedback about his people, processes, strategy, and customers, and then understand how a change in one will affect the others.

The authors clearly and thoroughly explained the alignment factors and conditions throughout the book. They followed their explanations with incisive questions for readers to ask about themselves and their organizations to assess their degree of alignment. Those questions were definitely a highlight of the book for they really helped to stimulate my thinking and should help inspire organizational progress to alignment. Another highlight was the appendices that contained examples of actual tools and products used and created by some of the aligned organizations studied by the authors.

The inside back cover jacket sums up why I give the book my highest recommendation: "Essential reading for all managers and executives, "The Power of Alignment" offers a new way to reestablish focus and sustained energy, and is a dynamic approach for staying balanced and achieving extraordinary levels of performance."

I found this book easy reading, concise, and presented it's basic premise well with specific examples and good suggestions for creation and implementation.

Working as a Director in Managed Care for several pharmaceutical companies, it creates a focus for any organization and a roadmap for the future(physician, health plan, pharmaceutical company) to avoid many of the mistakes and pitfalls that have already been experienced in an attempt to align with the ever changing healthcare landscape.

For those who do account management, it provides a construct and roadmap to use to optimize alignment with internal customers and maximize resources to create value and return with the external customers (....and their customers.) As the authors point, alignment is a continuing process, not a single event in time. Many companies become quickly aligned with the past, and misaligned with the present & future, and can not sustain the competitive edge because they forget this basic premise that the authors reinforce.

The concepts are basic and fundamental, but usually overlooked and forgotten in the day to day business of rapidly growing companies and changing environments.

                            Book Description

A modern theory of executive strategy for the information age

The information revolution has radically transformed virtually every aspect of business today. Yet, no book has fully addressed its impact on strategic management-until now. In Executive Strategy: Strategic Management and Information Technology, Frederick Betz builds on his pioneering work concerning the management of technical innovation to explore the powerful relationship between traditional strategic management and today's computer and communications technologies.

By adapting established strategy-related concepts and processes to the strategic management challenges faced by companies in the information age, this book offers readers the background they need to guide processes ranging from the creation of strategic business models and the development of comprehensive planning scenarios to the strategic management of business diversification and the formulation of information strategy.

Concepts are developed with a survey of the older business literature on strategy and the newer information strategy literature, and illustrated by a wealth of new technology and e-commerce-related case studies. The case studies, presented in the book and on its accompanying Web site (www.execstrat.com), are drawn from leading companies such as Apple Computer, Pixar, AOL Time Warner, and Amazon.com.

From the Internet and e-commerce to the role of computer-aided tools such as inventory control and project management software, the world of information technology is filled with innovations that have crucial ramifications for the strategic management of every business. This book equips present and future engineering and business professionals with the road map they need to help steer the modern organization skillfully through the twists and turns of this new and exciting business landscape.

                            Book Description

Knowledge is most productive when it is shared by all. This simple but profound insight, long accepted in the academic, scientific, and medical communities, is about to radically transform business. Our economy has become inundated with information, yet often businesses are unable to use and exploit it. How can managers organize their workplaces to effectively exchange, expand, and exploit knowledge?

Dr. Jim Botkin, one of the world's leading knowledge consultants, sees a tidal wave of information swamping the old ways of doing business. The knowledge economy, he argues, is not just for Silicon Valley startups; it touches every company, in every industry. We ignore Dr. Botkin's experience at our peril; the new breakneck speed of change demands that we all capture and capitalize on knowledge, or die. As he puts it, "You better not be in the same business five or ten years from now that you are in today."

Smart Business is the first knowledge-age book to give practical advice on how to organize and make use of knowledge -- how to turn knowledge into wisdom. Botkin argues that we must build "knowledge communities" -- groups of people with a shared passion to create, use, and share new knowledge for tangible business purposes. When we do, we will experience a transformation that powers our business and inspires new models of networked management.

Botkin draws on the experiences of dozens of companies -- and includes testimonials in an appendix from managers at such organizations as Xerox, Marriott, Saturn, and Los Alamos labs. He shows how AT&T formed six knowledge communities in order to radically transform their selling strategy. How the postal service of Sweden transformed itself from the oldest state monopoly to one of the largest successful private companies in Scandinavia. How Motorola is using knowledge to transform its legendary Motorola University from classroom curriculum to catalyst for change.

With examples like these, and practical advice on how every organization can benefit from knowledge communities, Smart Business is the knowledge book for the new millennium.

                            5 out of 5 stars A KaosPilot must-read.......1999-07-18

At The KaosPilot University we do not believe in lists with required reading since this would deprive the students of the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning - learning how to learn - but SMART BUSINESS by Dr. Jim Botkin is the exception which confirms that rule. The new dividing line is between the ones who know and the ones who do not know how to capture, share and leverage knowledge.

Smart Business is the pragmatic new economy manifesto we have been waiting for and a 'must-read' for anyone who want to keep making a difference when the rules of business is changing.

4 out of 5 stars This books goes beyond technology in addressing KM issues!.......1999-06-18

In today's hyper-linked, blurred world, it's not surprising that the KM field is overflowing with books and papers, each touting the "best" solution. So why should you read this book?

What Jim Botkin realizes and communicates in this excellent book is that there is no single "best" KM solution. Rather, Smart Business clearly tells the story that only a holistic approach can address the real KM issues companies face.

Instead of advocating a specific KM technology or process,he provides numerous examples of how real companies are dealing with the significant cultural, as well as the technological, issues around KM. Together, these examples paint an impressionistic picture of what it takes to be at the forefront of successful KM.

What these companies have found out, and what Jim reports back, is that KM is more about constructing a community rather than installing a piece of software or hardware. And building communities is not something that can easily be reduced to a series of steps or processes. Communities arise from shared experiences. And if telling stories is one of the best ways to share an experience, then by the time the reader has finished, they will have experienced a bit of what it's like to be inside a KM leader.

What's exciting about Smart Business is that the stories are not filtered through Jim. Instead the reader hears them "first hand" directly from the company. You read about how Xerox made the transition from the document company to a knowledge company from Priscilla Douglas of Xerox's Public Sector area. Helena Light Hadley, Director of Marriott's New Business Ventures, tells you how they use KM to assure high levels of customer service in an industry with traditionally high turn-over rates.

So if you're looking to go beyond technology and into the fundamental cultural issues in KM, Jim Botkin's Smart Business is a great story to hear!

5 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force on the knowledge revolution.......1999-06-17

Dr. Jim has done it again. The author of the best selling, Monster Under the Bed, has given us the most concise and authoritative work yet on knowlege: its management; communities; and the new knowledge business.

The book breaks new ground and also summarizes where we are in the whirlwind of knowledge as it rips through the entire global economy. It incorporates a number of insightful case studies from real companies around the world on how they are coping with this new phenomena.

The real value to readers, initiated and novice, is how organizations, through knowledge communities, can transform themselves, even in legacy companies. These are powerful ideas, stories and concepts that together create a whole new way of doing business-- SMART BUSINESS.

I loved the analogy to bees and the clever artwork. Nature itself can teach us many lessons if only we had the patience to learn. You can learn a great deal from this book. "Dell or be Delled", as the saying now goes. This book is a manifesto for the emerging fast company. Read it and move into the future. Disregard it at your own peril!

5 out of 5 stars Praise from a Knowledge Management Practitioner.......1999-06-17

If you are "doing" knowledge management and it's not working, read Jim Botkin's book. If you want to build a knowledge management system, read the book. If your CEO doesn't "get" knowledge management, have him or her read this book. It is a very cogent presentation of the business case for knowledge management, and for those who want to learn, a great KM primer. AND there's a new and valuable framework for success, which is the knowledge community. Without it or them, you're wasting your time. It is an intelligent and fun book, loaded with great examples and personal stories.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious recapitulation of the obvious.......1999-06-10

How many cliches can a consultant craft into a single disjointed book? Too many. The examples are tired; the insights are obvious, and the conclusions familiar. Save your time and money.
