This is essentially part of the Barron's Business Success Series, which also included 'Creative Problem Solving', 'Conquering Stress', 'Speed Reading for Business', 'Speed Reading for Professionals', & 'Time Management'. Each book under this series is designed for no-frills quick reading, easy digestion, & yet packed with useful expert advice.

I had owned quite a good collection of the books under this series, since the early nineties.

As a matter of fact, besides understanding the strategies to prompt memory recall, I got out a lot of good stuff about high performance reading from this book when I first read it during the nineties.

My favourite parts & chapters from the book:

Part II: Attention Management;
Chapter 5: Selective Attention;
Chapter 6: Power of Verbalisation;
Chapter 7: Power of Visualisation;

Part III: Organisation Management;
Chapter 8: Principle of Association;
Chapter 12: Reading Retention;
Chapter 14: Strategies to Prompt Recall;

In terms of learning points, Chapter 12 gave me the most return of investment. The author had introduced the work of French reading expert, Bettina Soulez.

It was from here that I began to synthesise the research findings with the work of many other authors & realised the power of the human mind during the process of reading - I understood what I need to know exactly & what I need to avoid exactly in order to achieve high performance in reading.

To end this review, I would say this: Memory is integral to reading, as well as to our daily lives. This book has most of the answers.

The author's writing style is crisp & concise. Best of all, it's high content information.

Good Authentic New Orleans Recipes.......2006-03-23

Frank Davis is well-known in the N.O. area and all of Louisiana for that matter. He has a number of cookbooks, but this is one of our favorites, and have used it for years. We made this purchase to begin restoring the cookbook collection of family members who have lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina. When I thought of the one book they would most like to have back, this is the one I immediately knew had to be on the list. It has authentic, "regular people" recipes (not high-falutin' gourmet chef recipes) that we can and do cook in our home kitchens. Frank Davis does "N'Awlins" food in a laid back, easy to duplicate style and the results are always good.

This particular Frank Davis inspired me to be a better "cajun" cook and it was simple enough to understand for cajun-newbies like myself. He has responded to my emails before and is great to his fans. I would LOVE to see a new cookbook because I'm wearing this one out. The previous reviewer who gave Frank 1 star is OUT OF HIS MIND. Frank may not be originally from New Orleans but neither is Emeril Lagasse. You don't have to be born in Louisiana to be a great cook...I'm from there and it's Frank's book that helped me tremendously. BY THE WAY, THE PASTA RECIPES ARE GREAT!!! Keep writing Frank!!

Frank Davis is a grandstanding phony.......2004-07-14

He isn't from New Orleans, or even Louisiana, and NO ONE here says "N'Awlins", that is tourist / marketing talk - wherever you see "N'Awlins" written on something it is always a sure sign that you are getting something cheap, phony, tacky and designed expressly for tourists. The guy has the annoying habit of plastering his name and mug everywhere, and his writing is loaded with embarrassing malapropisms. If you want to get some genuine Louisiana or New Orleans recipes, try Paul Prudhomme's first book, or even Emeril.

This is my favorite cookbook, and I have lots. The recipes are fast, easy, and taste out of this world. Being from New Orleans, and having tasted some of the best food in the world, Frank's recipes yield the best results I've ever had. This is a book everyone should have among their collection.

Great New Orleans Cooking.......2000-09-09

I have all of Frank Davis's Cookbooks and watch him everyweek on a local TV morning show. His recipes are precise and easy to follow and the results are magnificent. All his cookbooks have typical New Orleans food and he even tells you what is good to accompany main dishes.

Very useful info.......2007-10-07

I am a newbie to knitting and wanted books about novelty yarns. I bought a couple that did not give any useful information at all.
However, this book provides useful information about working with various fibers, and stitches to use with novelty yarns. It shows examples of different stitches using a variety of novelty yarns. This is invaluable to choosing a yarn and a stitch you like without having to waste yarn trying things out.
On the negative side, I would say the projects are a bit conservative and don't display the wonderful yarns to their best advantage. Every project is a sweater. For gorgeous projects that you would LOVE to wear, I suggest Exquisite Little Knits by Schreier & Kimmelstiel. Plenty of items that use only a couple balls so you can afford to make them.
These two books together make a good starting point for novelty yarns.

I wanted to like this book...but did not.......2006-08-11

I bought this book to solve a problem I have a fairly large backstock of a novelty yarn and when the purchasing haze cleared, I wasn't sure what I'd do with it. I was hoping this book would give me ideas....especially on work-a-bility of patterns with challenging yarn. That is perhaps not a fair test, I admit.

This book is loaded with designs for fizzy, hairy yarns. As a result, everything looks very dated. I found almost nothing that would work with "my" novelty yarn, a slubby Gedifra number. I would wear almost nothing I see in this book.

Great source for yarn descriptions.......2006-03-07

I was looking for a primer on yarns. The first part of this book catagorizes yarns and describes the characteristics very well. I highly recommend the book if you are interested in yarn characteristics. The section of patterns was fun to glance through, but I don't intend to make any of them.

One of the Best.......2003-10-18

I found this book very inspirational. The beautiful color images of the knitted pieces made from unique combinations of novelty yarns offered many ideas for my own work. Seeing both Militzer's version and Klein's version of the same pattern provokes very different design concepts as well as color use. Excellent resource, I find I go back to it regularly for inspiration.
A busy knitter.

Disappointing.......2001-09-04

I was totally prepared to love this book, but when I read it, I found it to be quite disappointing. Whilst it has two or three helpful tips for knitting with novelty yarn and a gazillion gorgeous closeups of totally luscious yarns, it doesn't begin to go anywhere near the "Exploration of Color, Texture, and Style" promised in the title. In fact, aside from a few swatches knit with novelty yarns, it doesn't explore anything at all.

Much of the information in the book has to do with correcting faults in sweaters, information that is presented more thoroughly in many other books. I was expecting something of the quality of Sally Melville's Styles (an excellent book that delves into the many uses for oddments).

This book just doesn't fulfill it's promise of being a creative exploration. It's just a pattern book with a tip or two on fit, nothing more. And quite honestly, the designs are mostly dated (unless you're on a 1980's retro kick), and some are downright ugly.

I tried to like it, but it just didn't offer me anything.

According to legend, Aspasia of Miletus was a courtesan, the teacher of Socrates, and the political adviser of her lover Pericles. Next to Sappho and Cleopatra, she is the best known woman of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet continued uncritical reception of her depiction in Attic comedy and naive acceptance of Plutarch's account of her in his Life of Pericles prevent us from understanding who she was and what her contributions to Greek thought may have been. Madeleine Henry combines traditional philological and historical methods of analysis with feminist critical perspectives, in order to trace the construction of Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient times to the present. Through her analysis of both literary and political evidence, Henry determines the ways in which Aspasia has become an icon of the sexually attractive and politically influential female, how this construction has prevented her from taking her rightful place as a contributor to the philosophical enterprise, and how continued belief in this icon has helped sexualize all women's intellectual achievements. This is the first work to study Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient Greece to the present day.

Biography of a Modern Woman in an Ancient World.......2000-12-06

My first interest in this book was its classical history setting. As a former Classics student, I enjoyed the mix of history and biography. And as a woman, I was delighted that someone had written a biography of one of the most colorful women in antiquity. Aspasia is an astounding woman, and her life is finally put together for us in this unique biography. Ms. Henry covers a lot of ground for records of Aspasia are for the most part, fragmented and few. But there is enough evidence to cause us to think that if Aspasia lived the life that she did, then perhaps there were other women like her who will never be mentioned in books but who lived fully and sometimes on the fringe of society. What is most noteworthy for me is the chapter on the post-classical critics and commentators who never drop the bias of their own time in trying to sort out the unusual aspects of the past. Unlike these biased historians, Ms. Henry is refreshingly objective and logical with her readers.

Daughter of a country doctor.......2004-10-16

Cora Frear Hawkins was born in Iowa in 1887. As the daughter of a rural doctor, Cora had the experience of travelling with her father on medical calls and assisting with his practice as she got older. This book is a memoir of those times with her father. It opens with a blizzard that he went out in just before she was born, and closes with his death more than forty years later. It is a slim volume and a quick, smooth read. The chapters are loosely grouped around subject areas such as the life of the wife of a doctor, the buggy and horses that the doctor used, and her period as an office assistant.

I am delighted to see that the book has been reprinted. It is well-written enough to be of interest to general readers of all ages. In addition, it should be of specific interest to anyone interested in the history of women, pioneer medicine, or that particular time in US history. Cora herself inspired at least one book for younger readers, so if you are familiar with the book Cora Frear, this might be worth reading as well.
