A lucid how and why explanation of a revolutionary managerial approach........2005-09-09

Monden's book on the Toyota Management System emphasizes that the productivity of Toyota is not the result of any single factor like just-in-time manufacturing or total quality control, but a synergy of new thinking in many different areas: financial management; costing; functional organization; production management; product development management; international strategy; personnel management etc.

He dwells longer on costing methods especially target costing and kaizen (processual improvement) costing methods and Toyota's use of IT to leverage and enable just-in-time purchasing, production and marketing.

He also explains how Toyota's focus on generating internal capital rather than inviting external investment; having a flat organizational structure with workforce level responsibility; domain and functional organization; etc. contributed to Toyota's phenomenal growth.

On the flip side, he leaves you wanting for more information by dropping interesting hints at some places and leaving the ensuing questions unanswered. But this does not dilute the merit of the book.

The book covers all the related subjects in operations management. Colorful charts, tables and new photos provide reader an enjoyable read. At the end of each chapter there are both verbal and quantitative questions which test your understanding. Also, some chapters have "supplement" sections that describe how to solve quantitative problems in an excel spreadsheet. I strongly advise business students and sector employees to keep this book. It is a good reference.

Great book for all skill levels and lots of historic fashions........2007-07-19

I use this book all the time, for both dressing miniature dolls as well as a reference for historic periods and the fashions popular for a particular era. There was one thing I wasn't crazy about when I first got this book. The drawings for the patterns as well as the color photographs of completed dressed dolls are almost never on the same page as the intructions for sewing a particular pattern. I now have about a dozen little markers in my book to make it easier for me to quickly find what I need when I'm working on a doll. I also felt that a few more sources as to where to acquire the necessary materials for doll dressing should have been included. The book, with those exceptions mentioned above, is overall very good and extremely helpful. It's one of the only ones available with such detail on dressing 1/12 dolls.

Listening is an inspiration!.......2000-03-15

Both inspirational and humbling to listen to the voice and intellect of such a great man. Such command of the English language and speaking skills unmatched! After listening to him speak you will see how pathetic in intellect and moral character our politicians of today are. I've finished his biography as well and coupled with these speeches he emerges as one of the greatest men of our or any time. I cannot recommend enough these tapes or his biography, it filled me with a renewed sense of purpose and conviction in life. If there was a phrase to sum him up it might be "never give up" on life or one's possibilities to achieve. Buy these tapes!

The theory of ethical economy analyses the ethical presuppositions of the market economy. It demonstrates that ethics is the pre-coordination in the motives of the economic agents anteceding the coordination of the price system in the market process. Ethical economy develops a positive theory of economic, ethical, and religious coordination of self-interested action described as a super-assurance game of prisoners' dilemma situations. It conceptualises ethics as the corrective of market failure and religion as the corrective of ethics failure. The formal ethics of coordination is then complemented by a theory of the material-substantive ethics of value qualities. One principle of ethical economy is the classical principle of double effect that is used for a theory of managerial and general decision-making. Unintended side-effects (externalities) are a central problem of decisions of large impact. Management decision making must exploit the potential for positive side-effects and control the negative side-effects of managerial decisions. The theory of ethical economy analyses the principles of just price and fair pricing and the relevance of the theory of just price for the pricing behaviour of the modern firm. Principles of Ethical Economy forms a theoretical synthesis of the market theory of modern economics and of the natural right tradition of ethics. Best Book on Smith.......2002-09-17

Cropsey has written the best book on Smith (it was written, to be accurate, almost fifty years ago). That said, it is also a very strange book. Cropsey concedes, at the start of the book, that Smith is not a systematic thinker on the order of Hume, Kant, Locke, etc., but he then proceeds to ascribe all sorts of systematic intentions to Smith that load more weight on Smith's "system" than it was meant to bear.

For example, he ascribes to Smith a consistent "materialism" that Smith nowhere explicitly defends. It would be more accurate and cautious to concede that in fact Smith was largely agnostic on such ontological questions. On the basis of Smith's supposed "materialism" Cropsey finds a contradiction in the very notion of "natural liberty" that is unconvincing.

The best argument that Cropsey makes is to articulate Smith's replacement of the intellectual virtues by the passions. To this cause Cropsey traces Smith's entire revaluation of the traditional teaching regarding the cardinal virtues, a revaluation in which generosity is replaced by prudence and wisdom disappears. Despite these criticisms, Cropsey gets closer to Smith's intentions than any other scholar. The book is well worth reading.

Oprah would love this one!.......2002-04-03

LISA, THE BRIEF LIFE OF A WRITER is a collection of poems, essays, and book reviews written by Lisa McDonough, who died at age 34 in March 2001 from Cystic Fibrosis. She had been a journalist with the PALM BEACH POST newspaper. Her poems are insightful and mature, employing a gift from the muses; her essays (many about dealing the trials she had to face) are inspirational without being sentimental. Most interesting to me are her book reviews. Oddly enough they reveal much about her character, while providing readers with a vehicle to access a wide variety of reading material.

This is a beautifully designed book, with a photo of Lisa on the cover. That same photograph sits on my own writing desk, a gift from Lisa following a visit to her home in Jupiter, Florida in 1999. Years ago, I had the honor of teaching Lisa McDonough when she was in the eighth grade, in Hawaii. Later, she helped to edit two of my own books, published by Susquehanna and Syracuse University presses. What enormous pleasure it gave me to watch my little student, now a college honors graduate, take red pen to her teacher's work. She had learned well and had become an expert teacher herself.

Lisa's brief time with us is a message that life--even with the weight of trials and tribulations--can be possible, useful, and hopeful. Her passing was a lesson in grace and bravery. Her book is not just a tribute to her but a guide to help all of us live with courage and joy.
