Project Selection Under Uncertainty is the result of a five-year research program on the selection of projects in New Product Development (NPD). Choosing the New Product Development portfolio is of critical importance in today's business environment. The NPD portfolio has considerable strategic effect on the "middle term" success of a business.
This book takes a step in developing a theory that addresses the need for quantitative prioritization criteria within the broader strategic context of the R&D portfolios. Its foundation lies in mathematical theory of resource-constrained optimization with the goal to maximize quantitative returns. The book seeks to broaden the portfolio discussion in two ways. First, simplified models - appropriate for the data-poor NPD context - are developed, which attempt to illuminate the structure of the choice problem and robust qualitative rules of thumb, rather than detailed algorithmic decision support. Such robust rules can be applied in the R&D environment of poor data availability. Second, the annual portfolio review is not the only important choice in resource allocation. In addition, the book discusses how ideas might be pre-screened as they emerge, and how projects should be prioritized once they are funded and ongoing.

Great book!.......2001-04-23

I have read numerous books and manuals on how to mount a deer. Most were out-of-date for the times. I found this book to be very helpful and an easy step by step method of explaining. One is able to follow along and understand exactly what is going on, without getting lost. The pictures also help, along with clear descriptions of what products are used and how to use them. It leaves little unanswered. There is also a detailed overview of what was talked about in previous chapters and what products were used for what purpose. I enjoyed her layed back approach that gives one confidence. Definitely an up to date book. I highly recommend this book over an others. Hands down, no question about it!!

I read this book just for the curiosity on the two sons by adoption of George W. Ball. Lt. John C. Ball was my Officer in charge when I was in the Army at Kagnew Station in Eritrea (Ethiopia then) in 1964. I remember John C. Ball as not like the typical officers in the army.

Terry Osborne's coming-of-self narrative is brave, honest, and poignant. I have recently left New England after seven years, and Osborne's careful and tactile descriptions truly stirred me. But even for anyone who's unattached to a Vermont landscape, there's an important lesson here. Osborne shares with us his very personal journey to the discovery of how deeply our environment can inform our sense of self - in Osborne's case, how the complex "mosaic" of land, water, and air reflects the contours of his struggle with depression. Even now, living so far from all the swamp-and-peaks nature of Osborne's journeys (I'm a Paris resident), Sightlines has inspired me to explore my surroundings with a renewed energy and curiosity - to understand how much self-discovery can unfold through such an investigation. Managment theories come and go, but the basics will always hold firm. This book presents those principles in a readable and common sense manner. Many of the ideas are not new, but have stood the test of time, and have bypassed a lot of the fad trends. If this book had been published in more recent times, it would be hailed as a refreshing new departure from outmoded and ineffective methods.

Even though this book is quite old, it still applies in the 21st century. Some of the case studies written 30 years ago have played out over time exactly as the author predicted making this a better book than a more recently written one. I highly recommend this as a book that will last longer than the "new economy".
