The Human Need for Other People.......2004-12-06
One of the main things that I have carried away from reading this book is the stress it places on the human need for other people. We accomplish very little alone. Nearly all personal success is due to the relationships we have with other people who influence or help us in our endeavors. This book reminds the reader, especially those of us who are somewhat introverted in the presence of strangers, that the more people we know, the greater the quality of life. This is because different people have a variety of talents, insights, and personal connections that can bring benefit to others. Expanding the number of people we know enlarges the potential we have for solving our own problems or helping those we care about. This caused me to reflect on the fact that I might be able to help people just by introducing them to other people I know.
The book also spends time on some practical issues of getting to know others and maintaining relationships: Things such as exchanging two business cards in order to facilitate referrals (inspiring the title), overcoming the impersonal barriers that high tech communication tools may pose and advice on using them effectively, and most importantly, focusing on the needs of others in building relationships rather than your own ambitions. Put properly, your services will be valued and sought when you learn to effectively meet the needs of others.
This book has made me want to take some time to remember all the people I know, especially those whom I've lost touch with, and to begin to revive all the relationships I've neglected out of laziness or distraction. If we really understood the importance of friendship, then we would always strive to maintain them, and we would never lose an opportunity to make new ones. This brings me to a second resolve, which is that when in social situations, it is important to resist the urge to withdraw into a shell, and instead seize the opportunity to meet some new people. For people who value their relationships with others but experience frustration in initiating or maintaining them, this book is definitely a step in the right direction.
It Takes Two.......2003-01-07
The Power of 2 by Anthony Sciré (shur-RÁY) is all about relationships. You will discover why you should hand out your business cards two at a time. You will learn to "circulate and percolate". You will find the essential skills that build solid relationships.
This book will encourage and inspire salespeople. And everyone is selling something.
If I am ever accused of being nice to someone, this book is to blame.
Sciré loves people and it shows. I love this book and am giving it five stars.

Building productive, mutually beneficial relationships.......2002-09-09
The Power Of 2: Win Big With People In Your Work And In Life by author, international businessman, and motivational speaker Anthony C. Scire is a solid, "reader friendly", guide to building productive, mutually beneficial relationships with other people, whether in business or in the personal areas of life. From the importance of a sociable attitude, to learning how to master one's emotions, to building "high-touch" relationships, to adapting in an increasingly technological workplace, The Power Of 2 is a thoroughly practical and even inspired resource especially suited to the paradoxically globalized yet socially isolated world of today.

Book Description
In 1988, at the age of 20, Souha Bechara attempted to assassinate General Lahad, chief of militia in charge of Israeli-occupied Southern Lebanon. In Resistante, she details her further involvement as a young secular Orthodox Christian left rebel in the movement to free her country from occupying military forces — and the subsequent punishment and incarceration she experienced. The author speaks movingly of how her childhood in a war-torn country shaped her political belief system as an adult and offers an engaging personal look at the Middle Eastern conflict.

An important book.......2007-10-19
This is an important work for anyone who wants to look into the impact of war and occupation. This first person account of an act of resistance and the aftermath is a powerful work that forces the reader to see things from the perspective of the innocent people who are forced by circumstances into decisions that are incomprehensible for those who will never be faced with war.
Whether one considers the author a criminal/terrorist or a resistance fighter her story is compelling and relevant. Her account details her progression from a normal Lebanese girl going to school and living with her family into a politically radicalized woman willing to risk her life and her freedom to strike a blow against the enemy of her country and her people. Her account humanized those who we too often dismiss as "terrorists". It made me realize that those who commit these violent acts are not mindless fanatics, but real people with family's and friends and life that they love. These are people who have been driven to the brink of hopelessness to the point where they feel their only recourse is to lash out against those they perceive as the protagonists of their torment.
It is important to understand what drives a person to these actions, and to realize that military actions affect real people. Benign terms like precision bombing and collateral damage belie the horrific consequences for those who see and feel the real impact of what these words really represent. Criminal or honorable, resistance fighter her story is one that represents a thousand similar stories.
The proof is in the pudding!.......2006-08-23
In the end, Soha puts love of her country and nationalism as the primary motivating factor behind her actions. This is a very interesting read in light of present day events, which support both sides of the argument of Israel as occupier versus Israel as defender. Lebanon is a small country divided by religion, ideology and perhaps even race. As the middle east connection to the mediteranean and Europe it is also highly desirable territory. Read in light of present day events, this will make you think!
riveting, and yet missing essential element.......2006-01-24
Having grown up in the war in Beirut I was particularly fascinated reading about Soha Bechara's experiences, in part because they were so utterly different from mine--though very traumatized by the war, I was nevertheless sheltered in that I did not participate in it. I think this book is a powerful and compelling evocation of life in war and the process of transforming a young, idealistic pacifist into a murderer. (I use the word murderer because as much as I myself hated the SLA, the occupation, all of it, I cannot bring myself to call shooting a man point blank in the chest after months of planning, anything other than murder, no matter the cause.) This is where for me the book is missing something essential, and that is self-reflection--she describes the events of her life and evokes the difficulty and confusion of entering this violent world, but she does not look back from her new vantage as someone living in Paris and writing a book. Does she still rue limiting herself to only 2 bullets? Does she believe her operation made a difference, and why? Does she believe it wouldn't make a difference? Does she have any regret, or does she still feel as passionately as she did at 16, when she was striving so hard to join the resistance? I was left wondering who she is now. As someone who abhors violence as much as she claims to throughout the book, I needed to hear about how she reconciles that stance with what she did and even more particularly what was done to her--the accounts of her torture are not followed by any reflection on its effect, and one gets the impression she went in and came out the exact same person, which I find impossible to believe. I needed to understand how she reconciles everything she did and all that happened now, in the present, in her entirely different life, for the book to feel complete.
That is not at all to say I wouldn't recommend this book; I read it in one sitting, riveted.
A primary source on the Israeli occupation of Lebanon.......2005-04-12
Whether you think of Suha Beshara as a freedom fighter or a worthless terrorist, there is one truth about this woman: that she sets a precedent in women's role in the Arab world. She stood up for her beliefs as she ended the male monopoly of all kinds of military activity in the oriental societies.
Suha, a supporter of the Lebanese Communist Party, was recruited during the days of Israeli occupation of Lebanon to assassinate her compatriot, Antoine Lahad, who defected from the army and formed his own pro-Israeli militia known as the South Lebanese Army (SLA).
The assassination attempt failed and Suha was eventually detained and taken to the notorious Khiam Prison, where SLA detectives tortured their subjects causing the death of many of them. Evidently Suha survived.
The book is written in a chronological context and is concluded by the time Suha was released in 1998. It would have been very much in place, however, had Suha decided to look back at her violent activity and her decade in prison and gave her assessment in retrospect. Suha claims that her violent experience later changed her into a peacenik while her stay in prison taught her the love of life and patience.
Despite the drawback, the book is a primary source and a firsthand account of a witness who once contributed to the making of news in Lebanon and Israel in the 1980s.
Suha's book brings to the forefront the perspective of a silent South Lebanese population that had lived under Israeli occupation.
Unfortunately, there is very little literature about what these southern Lebanese locals thought and believed at the time away from the divergent claims and perspectives of the two contending parties mainly Israel and Hizbullah. This volume covers particularly this area.
A must read to understand the Levant.......2004-10-10
A must read to understand important parts of the Middle East.

You don't want this one to end - sucks you right in!.......2005-01-21
I read this book because Jess Willard Speer, known as Tag to all of the family and close friends was my great-uncle that always enthralled me when we would sit in family gatherings and listen to his stories of life's experiences. I was overwhelmed at not only how much I found out from a genealogical perspective, that I somehow hadn't known before, but also by the grip this book got on me and my husband as well. We did not want to stop reading it outloud to one another! My father-in-law who never had the opportunity to meet any of my family loved the book and also could not put it down like ourselves. I had read The Grapes of Wrath when in high school years ago - it didn't grab me like this one did. A definite "must read" for anyone who likes history or just likes a great read!
Great Story.......2001-07-22
This was one of the best books I've ever read....I heard stories about Oklahoma through my great grandma, and my grandma, but this book just validates those stories...and for a real treat I recommend the sequel to this book "Sons of Thunder".
It Deserved More Than 5 Stars!.......2000-06-12
I thought this book was more than excellent. I don't read much but this book was one that I could not put down until I finished it. I think it would make a great movie script! If you want to relive the Great Depression Era through a small boy's eyes you need to read this one. The author, Bonnie S. Speer, knows how to write. I have read other books she's written.

Introduction.......2006-12-17
We used this book in my "Operations analysis"-class, and it's a great introduction to the subjects discussed. Some very basic probability for estimating values and descision theory. Some regression in addition to other forecasting methods. Good sections on linear and integer programming, and also basic queuing models. Markov analysis is about as far as this book goes, and it basically just touches upon all the subjects in order to make the reader grasp the basic ideas.
One minus is the Windows-only software, no Mac-support there, but that only meant that I had to use Excel, which imo helped me gain a better understanding of the subjects, as I had to formulate all the spreadsheets myself instead of just feeding numbers into the QM-package, which imo seems like a total waste of a chance to learn. Anyway, most areas are covered with respect to both QM and Excel, which makes the non-existant Mac-support bareable.
So Much Better Than The University Bookstore.......2006-11-10
Wow! This brand new book cost $50 less than the same new book at my university bookstore! It was even cheaper than buying a used version of the book from the bookstore. The shipping was so fast, it arrived at my house the day after I ordered it! I'll be looking on Amazon.com for all my future text book purchases!! :)
Excellent introduction to the subject.......2006-02-28
I read this book as the assigned text for a course in Quantitative Analysis and found it to be an excellent text for such a class. Each Model and equation presented is explained through realistic examples, illustrations, and explanations of the math. This made the subject very easy to comprehend and apply to the real world.
Exercises at the end of each chapter are also based on real-world situations and case studies are included in the book and the CD that go into more detail about a real world use for each model.
The book was also easy to read and not overly technical when explaining mathematic concepts. An excellent text for an introduction to the field of management science.

A book for graduates--Not undergrads.......2003-10-28
After the first week of our class falling behind, my professor mentioned to our class that this book was the wrong format for undergrads. So this book is only good as the teacher and the students. It's easy to read, but hard to understand. And, the CD-ROM was not user-friendly enough, but had an awesome integration into MS Excel. I aced all of my math classes in college (undergrad), but this class...I'm not gonna to ace. But if you aced all math classes and you're using this book for a grad class, then go for it. Otherwise, find another book.
Great Book.......2001-12-12
I had one of the worst instructors on the planet this semester. I literally had to teach myself this entire course.
This book made it so much easier. Great diagrams, simple explanations. I ended up with an A.
Easy to follow.......2000-09-17
This book is easy to follow and the included cd makes solving the problems easy. It also has online links for each chapter.
Book Description
Risk Analysis A Quantitative Guide Risk and uncertainty are key features of most business and government problems and need to be understood for rational decisions to be made. This book concerns itself with the quantification of risk, the modelling of identified risks and how to make decisions from those models. Following on from the success of the previous edition of this clearly written and highly regarded book, this edition is extensively revised and updated and will provide an invaluable practical guide for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Quantitative risk analysis (QRA) using Monte Carlo simulation offers a powerful and precise method for dealing with the uncertainty and variability of a problem. By providing the building blocks the author guides the reader through the necessary steps to produce an accurate risk analysis model and offers general and specific techniques to cope with most modelling problems. A wide range of solved problems is used to illustrate these techniques and how they can be used together to solve otherwise complex problems. Reviews of the first edition "It identifies the various facets of risk analysis and provides a valuable reference to the concepts and techniques employed." Project, 1997 "It clearly explains many essential aspects of quantitative risk analysis . provides valuable techniques and sound professional advice." Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Vol. 12, 1999 "The book offers a powerful method for dealing with risk and uncertainty." Zentralblatt für Mathematik, Band 908, 1999

Risk Analysis.......2006-05-24
A very good book, but a bit too much mathematical detail in deriving formulas for probability distributions; could use better descriptions of when to use each probability distribution.
Best Book for Quantitative Risk Analysis.......2004-04-25
I believe that this book is the best of many Risk Analysis books. The book's structure, starting from fundamental topics and guiding to advanced topics, is excellent. So, I translated this book into Japanese! You will make the best use of the book with Excel add-in Monte Carlo simulation software like @Risk and Crystal ball that you can get its trial version from the vendor's site(free!). But, the value of this book is not decreased with its sophistitated notation even if you don't have such software. You can enjoy the logic of Quantitative Risk Analysis. Now, the author is preparing his original software. I hope it will be as valuable as this book.
1st edition more useful to a practitioner than the 2nd.......2003-10-18
Unlike in the first edition, the author seems to have tried his best to eliminate any reference to any simulation software in the second edition. Result: it now reads like any academic simulation text, only less. The first edition wasn't broke. Why fix it? Bring back the classic Vose!
Rigouros, clear and practical.......2003-04-20
This book gives a deep insight into the state of the art and recent developments of quantitative risk analysis using simulation methods. Describes topics such as second order risk analysis I never heard about before. I used the knowledge drawn from this book to write some technical papers (published on peer-reviewed journals and seminars proceedings). Specialized software, such as @-risk and crystal ball is not strictly needed to carry out the risk-analysis systems suggested by the author (but pretty advanced skills with excel or use of math softwares are required). The specific subject of the book is risk modelling by Monte Carlo Simulation and Bayesan analysis; it does not deal with fuzzy models or other uncertainty-propagation methods. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested into the specific subject.
Risk Analysis: A Quantitative Guide.......2001-08-25
I purchased this book to learn to write simulation equations in excel but only found it was a manual ( type book ) with good information for a very expensive software I did not have....If you have RISK software, it is a great book to have... I returned my copy w/o scanning the entire book.

Decent reference guide.......2000-07-06
This monograph concentrates on a general approach to estimating partial and joint evaluations (ie, part-worth utitlities) This approach is known as functional measurement, and is based on Information Integration Theory (IIT), a theory of human information processing. The monograph focuses on "metric" Conjoint Methods. These methods are based on the assumption that the individuals can evaluate multi-attribute alternatives in such a way that their responses are approximately interval in measurement level.
The monograph serves mostly as a brief tutorial of the area of Conjoint Analysis, and touches lightly on several of the important issues concerning explanation of consumer behavior in the marketplace. For someone that seeks a quick refreshing in the topic or a useful reference text, the book serves its purpose. For readers that are not familiar with the area of Conjoint Analysis, the monograph does not contain enough examples and explanation of techniques to be a practical guide; a novice reader in this area will definitely seek another text to understand how & when these techniques should be applied.
