Book Description
This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.
The North Carolina Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.
This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.
The North Carolina Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The North Carolina Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.
"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.

Customer Reviews:
Impressive Techniques.......2007-08-19
Yes, we all have odd balls of yarn. This book teaches you how to put together colors and textures to make garments. It gives one an explanation and understanding or what colors goes next to what fibers. You end up with a finished, one-of-a-kind project. Great photography, well written and enough information to get you going into that knitting bin.
Using your Stash.......2007-06-09
A very good book with lots of great coloured pictures about using your odd balls of wool to create great wearable items, a must for all knitters
A welcome addition to my library.......2007-03-11
This book will surely come in handy when I am in the mood to knit something different and use up some of my stash. The suggestions and strategies for stripes to use single skeins of yarn are helpful. I have already chosen my first project. I have a single skein of blue yarn that matches another single skein of a beautiful blue varigated yarn - once I pick up a couple of additional skeins I will get to work on the sleeveless shell. The day I received my order I shared the book with my knitting group - I think a couple of my knitting friends are going to order it too. A welcome addition to my library.
Ideas Abound!.......2007-02-14
This is a great book for any knitter...new to experienced. I found great ideas to incoporate into my own creative style. It challenges the experienced knitter to take a chance and shows the new knitter that it's OK to think out of the box.
NewKnitter.......2007-02-13
This is a great book on learning how to Knit on an angle. However, I didn't understand the measuring part for the width of a sweater. Do you measure across the needle or from the tip to the needle?

Book Description

McNulty Jr. takes the reader along on the emotional roller coaster of campaigning for office as he examines political and legislative milestones that shaped modern Arizona and details the emergence of a group of liberal "Young Turks" who would eventually seize control of the Arizona Democratic Party.
Customer Reviews:
Jim McNulty: Too decent to stay in Congress.......2005-03-01
The late Morris K. Udall, Jim McNulty's friend from college, was once described as being "too funny to be president." Reading this book, I realized that McNulty was too decent to be a long-term congressman. He lasted only two years. Mo Udall, another decent man, lasted for 30, defeated only by Parkinson's, but he was an exception. McNulty, an Irishman from Boston, practiced law and made a heavily Mormon area of Arizona his political base for nearly half a century. "Running Uphill" is an interesting tale of his service in the Arizona Senate, his political work for both Morris and Stewart Udall (JFK's interior secretary) his near-defeat of Barry Goldwater for a U.S. Senate seat and his decision to join the Peace Corps at an age where most men sign up instead for golf or shuffle board. Through it all, you realize that this is an honest, honorable and considerate man whose reward for a good freshman term in the U.S. House of Representatives was a narrow loss to a challenger who ran a negative campaign. McNulty may have been too nice to stay in Congress, but Arizona and the nation are better for his having chosen to serve the public.
Book Description
"Mary Dodge Woodward's personal record of her life on a Dakota Territory 'bonanza farm' adds new detail and texture to the histories of both women and the West...[She] wrote about what she saw: The epic procession of reapers and threshing crews, the wildflowers and birds, the stupendous mirages that could make the wintry prairie an optical wonderland."-Elizabeth Jameson, from the Introduction
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite books.......2003-09-26
I first read the diary of Mary Dodge Woodward several years ago. Because I love the sound of Mary's written voice, I've reread it several times. It never fails to enchant. Reading this book is almost like time traveling back to the Bonanza Farm days. I found this story so compelling that I actually searched out the site of this old farm and visited with it's current residents. The site of the old Dodge farm is just west of Sheyenne Road, a half mile west of the Garrison Diversion substation. I stood in the remains of Mary's old cellar, and showed my children the location of the old barn that had the skull and crossbones sign painted on it. The location of the machine shop continues to hold so much old oil from Mary's time that grass does not grow on the site. This is a wonderful book for anyone that likes to read about the early days of Dakota territory.
A true picture of life on the Plains in the 1880s.......2000-10-02
A friend loaned me The Checkered Years, and after reading it, I purchased two copies, one to give away and another to lend and ultimately to keep in my library. From the day-to-day writings of Mary Dodge Woodward, the reader begins to understand the central role of weather in the life of the early Dakota settlers - the awesome cold, wind, and heat; the blizzards, drought, and flood - all matter-of-factly but beautifully described in an unpretentious diary. The diary entries give a hint of the tremendous effort it took on Mary's part and that of her family to build up a large wheat farm, and along with that, the uncertainties she faced as a widow growing old. I wish the book had more background information in its introduction and more diary entries that, even though they probably would have seemed repetitive, may have given more focus to the people mentioned in the selections.

Book Description
As their financial security, dreams and peace of mind became victims of the crisis in corporate responsibility, friends of investment banker, Wendy Stevens, sought her help in understanding what was happening and who to trust. Try as she might, she was at a loss to find a believable cause or solution to the crisis. In frustration she telephoned her friend, retired financial officer, Sam McAllen. Over dinner in Chicago's suburbs, Sam shared insights into the real cause of the continuing corporate crisis. He helped Wendy identify the vested interests that were abusing Shareowners' money, and he helped her to recognize why the populist ideas of "greedy people doing bad things" weren't the real cause of the crisis. Sam then suggested the grand deception at the heart of the corporate crisis... Wendy was astonished... It was so obvious.
Over breakfast the next morning, they explored a national solution to the corporate crisis as well as a "quick fix" that Wendy's friends could personally use until the national solution was implemented.
When they parted, Wendy knew she had answers that would help her friends regain their confidence in stocks and perhaps some of their lost financial security.

An insider look on the real causes and possible solutions.......2004-03-08
Expertly and knowledgeably written by Will Marshall (an experienced businessman whose corporate and financial expertise includes twenty years as Treasurer of the 2.5 billion Nalco Chemical Company), Money Ain't Free: The True Cause Of The Crisis In Corporate Responsibility is a hands-on, insider look on the real causes and possible solutions to modern-day crises in corporate fiscal responsibility. Portraying the financial woes of corporations as a far more complex problem than simply the blind greed of a few highly placed individuals, Money Ain't Free is a down-to-earth guide portraying its concepts via example for ease of comprehension. Informed and informative, Money Ain't Free is very highly recommended reading for non-specialist general readers wanting a more complete and comprehensive understanding of the current and continuing crisis in corporate management -- and what can be done about it.
Practical insight.......2004-02-20
The book provides useful insight into the motivations of management, advisors, accountants and other professionals. By "following the money", one can appreciate the motivation of individuals who can impact valuation and modify their approach to investing accordingly. The book is written in a conversationalist style that allows the layperson to stay engaged. A good, thought-provoking read.
A MUST READ BOOK FOR THE INVESTOR.......2004-02-13
THIS BOOK IS EASY TO READ AND OFFERS A FRESH APPROACH TO EVALUATING THE PERFORMANCE OF A PUBLIC COMPANY.IT IS A MUST READ FOR ANY INDIVIDUAL TRYING TO EVALUATE HOW TO INVEST THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY IN THE STOCK MARKET.THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT HOW OUR CURRENT ECONOMIC METRICS DO NOT PROPERLY EVALUATE MANAGEMENTS PERFORMANCE AND AS SUCH CAN MISLEAD INVESTORS.THE BOOK PROVIDES EASY TO USE METRICS FOR COMPANY PERFORMANCE AND MANAGEMENT EVALUATION.
Good Financial Guide.......2004-02-03
I enjoyed reading Will Marshall's "Money Ain't Free: The True Cause of the Crisis in Corporate Responsibility". It is thought provoking, timely, and educational. Part of the book outlines the problems with basic financial measurement systems and financial "distractions" and how those problems have created an environment in which recent financial scandals can take place. It argues for changes in those measurement systems and a new financial report - the "Valuation Statement" which would help investors more easily evaluate corporate performance. On this level, the book is a call to action for change in corporate governance and oversight. What takes the book to another level is Marshall's application of the lessons of Enterprise Value and their use in the selection of stocks. The basic premise is if you can calculate the Enterprise Value of a company and its projected rate of growth, you can identify undervalued - and overvalued - stocks with a much higher degree of reliability than using conventional methods. Unlike many books on finance, Money Ain't Free is written for the non-finance person, using a conversational style. The style may take a little getting used to, but the book is very readable. Both finance and non-finance people would benefit from the book. I would recommend it both to people who want to understand current events in the market and to those who are looking for tools to help them invest in the stock market.
