Those of us familiar with the theory and stories of happenstance have been awaiting this book a long time. Thank you, authors, for making your theory available to anyone in need of inspiration. Thanks, also, for validation of those magic moments that have opened doors for us all at one time or another.

We career counselors encourage our clients and students to minimize the quest for the perfect resume format or interview outfit. They should rather maximize encounters and opportunities. When our coaching about the need to network is met with a glazed look, let's try recommending this book instead. It makes the point that failures, mistakes, rejections, and random encounters can be the seeds of a meaningful career direction. So go forth - speak to your neighbor, thank a former teacher, chat with the person behind you in the grocery line. To Krumboltz and Levin, it's not just whom you know, but what you do about it that will create your luck.

Luck is ironic--or not?.......2004-09-11

I just finished reading Luck is no Accident today. It's a remarkable book that I couldn't put down. Believe it or not, this book came into my life just at the right time. Let me explain myself...

I'm a senior at the University of Southern California. As you can imagine, I'm currently trying to figure out my entire life in the next 10 months. That's supposedly when I'm going to enter the "real world." Everyone has a different opinion on which way I should go except for me. I have no clue what my calling is quite yet. But this book taught me that it's alright to not be completely sure of your life plan at 21.

I think what I like best about Luck is No Accident is it's incredible way of helping you unlearn all the "junk" that people have told you your whole life. We learn that we have to be just like all the other sheep in this world--following some predesigned plan that will guarantee success. However, this isn't true and most people still think that it is! This book demonstrates through numerous accounts that the best experiences in life are the unplanned ones--something so true.

I encourage all people--no matter what stage of life you are in--to read this book. And I especially hope that college students read it! Who knows, maybe one of your professors will assign you this book(like mine). Trust me, it won't be by accident :)

Is an excellent book that every human should read. Ribeiro says that once one see an opportunity one can't stop seeing it. This book is an opportunity to see the world with another eyes. Through the NLP he explain how can we change our perception of the world and, in consecuence, our life. The author has other books published in spanish (my mother's language)that I also recommend. Enjoy the life, change your wrong perceptions.

Pulling it all together.......2007-02-25

In his final book, Dr Shingo tries to pull his ideas together and clear some misconceptions. He works hard to drive certain points home. The material is good and worth reading, unfortunately, it seems to lack proper editing to organize the content well and eliminate repetition (a part of driving points home). I can only guess that it was rushed to completion before his death. He remains my favorite author on `lean' topics, and I greatly appreciate his work.

Shingeo Shingo is the guru behind manufacturing concepts such as SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die, to simplify changeover setup times) and Poka-Yoke (failsafe mechanisms embedded into the production process or set-up tasks, to eliminate any possibility of error). Therefore his authority in terms of improving process functions is undisputable.

Now, as far as this book goes, after you have gone past the first half it begins to turn repetitive (maybe it's a poor translation, or maybe poor editing, but it hurts the book) and you begin finding some concepts that popped up earlier in the book. Still, I was able to gather some very useful ideas... That's how this book is: if you stick to it, past the repetition, even in the numerous examples Mr. Shingo provides, you will find a wealth of ideas to improve your enterprise's processes. Do I recommend you buy it? Not really. I find it very expensive for what you can get out of it, but it certainly is worth getting in the Public Library or browsing (if you can find it, since it's over ten years old) ...

Underground Classic.......2005-09-04

No pun intended, this short (144-page) journey through funeral homes, cemeteries, and crematoriums with side trips to probate lawyers, casket-makers, astrologers, and stone-cutters (among others) is truly an underground classic and a MUST-READ for baby-boomers. Once you start talking about it, you will be surprised how many of your contemporaries have read it. Matson doesn't have all the answers, but he raises thought-provoking questions about dying (and what happens next) in a manner which will bring a smile to your face while enlightening you about things you never thought about, much less knew--although you will quickly sense that you DO need to think about them and DO need to know about them.

This wonderfully humorous book will open your eyes to the underworld. You'll never think about dying the same way again. All the important stops in the nowadays astonishingly complicated process of getting yourself underground are visited and at the end leave you wanting more... Unsung hero?.......2003-12-01

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I am impressed. This bookis an unsung hero. I guess that is because the author doesn't write a bunch of reviews and guides which are solely set up as informercials to push his overhyped book which isn't that good, I've seen it.

How to Form Your Own S-Corporation and Avoid Double Taxation is a real winner and will tell you what you want to know. Two other good books include Small Business Start-Up Kit: S-Corporations by Dan Sitarz and How To Start Your Own "S" Corporation by Robert A. Cooke. I also recommend The Small Business Legal Kit and Form Your Own Corporation and Launch A Business in Any State by J.W.Dicks.

I read this to get an idea of the steps to take in setting up my own S corporation. While this does take you through the steps of incorporating in Delaware, it reads more like an infomercial. The author has a business set up to incorporate you in Delaware, and will do it cheaper than his competitors, says the book. However, it is not very helpful if you want to incorporate in any other state.

This book was OK, but it was pretty basic. More information was definately needed-especially to spice up parts on the company financial section. Overall, it offers a pretty simple read, with some "lingo" being explained. This is a great book though for people just getting into small cap investing.

I LOVE PENNY STOCKS -- YOU WILL TOO.......2000-03-10

I began my stock market investing with the purchase of small stocks. Back then, they were called penny stocks because some companies sold their stock for just a few cents a share. Later, penny stocks were any stocks selling for less than $3 or $5 or $10 a share. This book deals with how to make serious money from investing in small or start-up companies. Small companies appear to be where the action is, and where the profits are. I like this book. It gave me valuable hints on profiting with small companies. There is another book you must read if you are interested in this subject. Get a copy of MAKING DOLLARS WITH PENNIES: HOW THE SMALL INVESTOR CAN BEAT THE WIZARDS ON WALL STREET by R. Max Bowser. Bowser has been writing a top financial newsletter for twenty-five years. He monitors many promising small companies. He gives advice on what to buy, when to buy and when to sell. He gives monthly updates on the stocks he recommends. I refer to Bowser's book often.

Integrity takes many forms.......2005-04-08

I also saw Karl Eller speak. He invited investment opportunities and I approached him after the session. He invited me to send him my business plan, which he would review. I promptly did so and heard no response from him for a number of weeks. I then followed up with a number of emails, all with read receipts simply asking for acknowledgement that he received the plan or to be referred on to someone else who may be interested. Initial emails were never responded to; concurrent emails with receipts were deleted without being read.

If this is integrity in business communications, especially to a fellow entrepreneur, perhaps the concept is best left described by an individual more familiar with the concept.

Saw Karl Eller speak in January on entrepreneurship. It was 3 hours of cliches like "learn from your mistakes". Er... you know I'd rather keep making the same mistakes over and over again. "Figure out what you do best... and stick with it!" like how Nokia was really good at being a lumber company, and now they are the worldwide leader in mobile phones. How about this Karl "earn the right to speak".

Ok, I'm biased because I know some of the people in this book. But as a result, I can honestly say that this is a fascinating look at people with hearing losses who are genuinely happy and living life to the fullest. Enough said.
