Shultz's work has been a great help to me as a new board chair.
The many examples with analysis are an effective method for helping me understand the whats and the whys of board selection and roles.
She does not seem to be afraid to refere to actual examples of poor practices.
This book is not for you if you are not open to the notion of a truly independent board.
The checklists and appendecies are also very useful for reviewing board performance and/or setting-up a board.
I highly recommend this work if you are a board member, contemplating being a board member, or are creating a board.
My interests are primarily in the privatly held company boards. The majority of examples are for publicly traded companies, however the principles seem to transend the "type of organization " issue.

Actually...A Useful Business Book.......2000-10-28

As one who serves on several Boards of Directors and also one who reads a fair amount of corporate governance material, I found Susan Shultz's THE BOARD BOOK strongly on point. Sitting and "considering" directors as well as new and experienced CEO's will all benefit from reading the book.

Besides being based on lots of her own personal experience and research, Shultz's approach to making the book highly anecdotal lends a real-world tone to what is sometimes a legalistic approach to writing about the duties and practices of both CEO's and Boards.

I suggest that time would be well spent reading this book.

Frequently, the appeal of a particular sewing project is greatly influenced by the fabric itself, and the appeal of the fabric is often linked to its visual and physical texture. The first half of this well-presented book explains how to create the fabrics; the second half offers instructions for projects that utilize these creations in such projects as quilts, pillows, vests, jackets, jumpers, place mats, and accessories. On the Surface - OK.......2000-11-02

I found this book rather 1-dimensional and not particularly inspiring. There is only 1 basic technique covered in this book, and the examples are all of the "cute, folksy, boxy" variety, for the most part worked in cotton. Examples include cute, folksy, boxy women's clothing; cute, folksy, boxy home-dec items; cute, folksy, boxy girl's clothing...I was hoping to find some more elegant examples, some different techniques, some different textures, some different fabrics used.

The information presented is exhaustive (130+ pages on 1 technique!) and well-written, with nice photos of the author's and other's work, but as an experienced sewer and machine-embroidery enthousiast I find I get the same amount of inspiration and information out of a Threads magazine article - and there have been several on the technique presented in this book.

A Wonderfully Creative Approach to Quilting and Sewing.......1999-12-12

Loved it! This book takes quilting to a higher level, and yet the technique of thread embellishment is quite uncomplicated. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in a unique approach to quilting or adding an extra dimension to their sewing - a very special book!

Wonderful technique for creating new textures.......1998-12-26

This fun book - thanks to Wendy's terrific sense of humor - shows how to create interesting fabric creations from what you have. Enables you to totally change a fabric into something else. Great ideas for using all the exciting threads available now. Only thing lacking is more projects. Hope there's a sequel.

What actually was the economic situation in 1929 and what happened to the stock market? Harold Bierman's fresh look at the Crash of '29 provides provocative answers that challenge the "facts" and overturn previously held assumptions concerning the catastrophic events that led to ten years of economic depression and very likely created the fertile soil of despair and unrest that ultimately led to World War II. This cogent re-evaluation takes a different tack and arrives at a different set of conclusions than John Kenneth Galbraith's classic overview of the period, The Great Crash. Echoes of the great stock market price declines that ended ten years of the greatest prosperity the U.S. had ever experienced have continued to reverberate down the corridors of history. Bierman believes that a more complete understanding of these past events can enhance current market decisions; that by accurately assessing the stock market crash of 1929-1932, readers can better grasp the present market situation and more wisely forecast the future. Arriving at drastically different conclusions from most widely read books on the subject, the 11-chapter study takes the position that the stock market was not unreasonably high in October of '29, asserting that, in fact, there was reason for optimism. Bierman presents sound explanations for the initial decline that are not dependent on the assumption of overvaluation. He also clarifies the vital distinction between speculation and investment and shows how President Herbert Hoover's "war on speculation" may have contributed to the crash and subsequent depression. The first chapter outlines seven commonly held myths regarding 1929. Other chapters compare the stock market and profitability of corporations; attempt to determine whether RCA stock was outrageously overpriced or merely a reasonably priced growth stock; and look at the 1931 banking system hearings. The Mitchell, Wiggin, and Insull affairs are all given new, fact-based twists. Final chapters examine margin buying, probability, and short selling, develop important perspectives on the crash of 1987, and extract valuable lessons to be learned. The book effectively refutes prior notions and replaces them with solidly built, readable explanations that are most relevant to history courses dealing with the period or courses on investment in common stock. Any general reader with an interest in early twentieth century history or in investment will find this a rewarding read.
