    3 out of 5 stars Good book but not an Encyclopedia of Verbal.......2004-01-02

    I bought this book hoping to get some boosts in verbal section of GRE. Well, it did but not big enough. I got only 50 points of increase. Altough, 50 points is quite an achievement but not enough to pass my personal limit. For verbal section, the key is to memorize and eat up as many words as possible. This book do provide SOME words, but not enough. For words I would prefer to go with Barron's or use free vocabulary builder software, eg. guru's wordlist.

    To ace verbal section will need alot of hardwork, especially for foreigners like me. This book will provide complementary assistant but surely not the bible for verbal section. One thing that I like about this book is it categorizes words according to it meaning, positive or negative, and typical meaning, such as there are many words have the same meaning, this book categorize them.

    As always Kaplan has the simple strategy to overcome problems. I like the sentence completion stretegy to paraphrase and words elimination. All in all, if you have time (more than 3 months of preparation) I think this book will increase your score alot, then again maybe it's not because of this book, but because you have memorize so many words.

    3 out of 5 stars Lots to study, little to show.......2003-12-09

    Though I have to admit my score was probably better on the verbal section having studied this book than if I hadn't, I must say it's a lot of work for such a pittance toward your score. For those who aren't applying to English related programs (or others that specifically require higher verbal scores) I'd highly recommend buying a more general book and understanding the methods for eliminating wrong answer choices. This, along with practicing the test format on the ETS software and other Kaplan software helped me much more than the HOURS and HOURS I spent memorizing a 2,500 word vocab list, only to get in the testing center and discover plenty of words I had never heard.

    Though the book does include a list of root words and the top 200 words in context (used in sentences, synonyms, etc.) beyond that it simply ranks the remaining 2,300 as equally important. The lists included which group the words into synonymous categories such as "criticize" or "praise" are also too general to be effective if you're working on the harder questions the book is intended to get you to, simply because those questions invariably include multiple antonyms or analogies that could apply and that require you to know the exact nuances of the word. Probably a better idea is to buy flashcards, which are grouped into high, medium, and low frequency words, so you can buy how many ever sets you will have time to study.

    Getting a high score in GRE Vocabulary do not necessarily depend upon years of experience with the English Language. Kaplan's Verbal Workbook is a living testimony to this fact. It definitely increased my test taking ability. It is a must have book. You should be honest in doing all your exercises. The list of high frequency words at the end is not meant to be comprehensive, but a combination of the understanding of the word roots and a familiarity with this word list will carry you a long way.     2 out of 5 stars Not great preparation.......2003-10-20

    I bought this book with the hopes of increasing my verbal scores tremendously on the GRE. Well, it did no such thing. My score only raised 20 points from a practice test taken with no preparation. Don't bother memorizing the 200 Top Used GRE words because only 1 of them was on the test. Waste of valuable preparation time. Buy something else or read lots and lots of scientific journal articles.

    5 out of 5 stars Kaplan, Princeton Review, or Barron's?.......2003-09-16

    I am currently studying for my GRE and an instructor in SAT classes. I agree with most reviewers here that test preparation can hardly be dependent on a single study aid. Kaplan's material always provides down-to-earth strategies, with aphoristic explanations and solid exercises. It is a means to an end; but so do all the other books available in the market. Princeton Review's material tends to be more verbose with less exercises. Their books that are commercially available do not really explain the philosophy behind their approach completely. Most candidates find it difficult to apply their strategies unless they have taken a course with them to teach the material itself. Once you have learned Princeton Review's strategies, their books then make perfect sense. Each question is designed with care to illustrate a particular strategy or method. Barron's adopts a very old school, albeit very consolidated approach to test preparation: building up from one's foundation. Their workbooks tend to have an abundant amount of exercises, which are generally much more difficult than those that would appear in the actual tests. The philosphy behind their approach is that candidates will perform well if they have encountered questions that are more advanced than the standard requirements. I find that Barron's is always a good foundational book if one has months to prepare. Princeton Review generally provides inspiring strategies if you have a chance to learn exactly what they want their instructors to teach as supposed to what they sell in our local bookstores. Kaplan is always a great choice if you have already had some foundation and insight into the test and would like a systematic approach to strengthen your testing skills.

    I know that there is infinity of books that contribute teachings to the nowadays managers. But Peter Senge in The Fifth Discipline goals offering a lot of different forms of approaching the problems, many different forms of thinking solutions, especially today, when managers should make decisions with very little time and very little information of the environment... or who has time today of reading all day's newspaper, know changes day by day in the market? Senge helps to invent every moment analysis tools, to synergy the company and all its members in that search, and those book is without doubts a pleasant reading for the bussinessman and woman.

              I bought this book for my husband who had no experience with building furniture and little experience with power tools. He has made every project in this book, and several from other "2x4" books with terrific results. The instructions are simple and clear and everything has turned out as pictured. I have recommended this book to everyone who admires our patio furniture and is surprised to hear it's home-made. We have even added decorative painting to some pieces and given them as gifts. Anyone who has taken junior high shop class could handle these projects.

              I took my first furniture/carpentry class at the local community college and built the garden sofa pictured on the front cover. I'm a woman and had never tried such a project. The instructions and pictures were terrific and my completed project now has a place of honor in my garden. I highly recommend this book if you're a beginner.

              Upon beginning my first project from this book, I was taken aback at the number of mislabelings, wrong dimensions, incorrect drawings and unclear (or downright confusing) instructions. Since this book is meant to appeal to woodworkers with little or no previous experience, it surprises me that so much misinformation found its way into print. A second, corrected, edition could make this flawed first effort into a truly useful resource.

                  I work for a book summary company. One of the books selected for summary is this book.

                  This book by former creative director of the renowned ad firm, Saatchi & Saatchi, lays out 10 lessons to follow in order to promote any brand. Although the author himself acknowledges that creativity knows no rules, the 10 lessons are offered as basic framework for structuring advertising creativity. But what is more interesting than these 10 rules are the many perceptive insights that he offers by delineating on the advertising campaigns undertaken by Saatchi & Saatchi, enumerating the process involved in creativity and the behind-the-scene actions pertaining to each project. He regales us with asides, the many advertising wars over products and clients, examples of shocking ads that redefined advertising creativity and several great quotations from literary and artistic innovators and thinkers, all of which provide us with an engaging repast. In fact, it is these captivating interludes that make the book really valuable than the lessons that he offers. By giving interesting case studies, he unveils the grueling creative process involved in each advertising process and brand making. More than anything the book helps us to adopt a new creative approach to advertising. You don't really have to belong to the advertising world, or even be in sales or marketing, just anybody reading this book is sure to find in it a delightful book worth possessing.

                  "Creative Leaps" is a smart and compelling book not only for someone interested in the advertising industry, but for anyone interested in the creative process in general. Michael Newman breaks down and demystifies creativity, making it an accessible tool for anyone-not just the creative director of one of the leading advertising agencies in the world. Through step by step lessons, and even suggestions on how to foster the creative process in the office, Newman engages the reader from the first page.

                  The ten lessons stated in the title seem like a neat and tidy number that understates the magnitude of the advice that Newman relates to the reader. He includes teachings not only from his own personal experiences, but through a multitude of quotations and anecdotes from famous great thinkers of the world as well. It also doesn't hurt that Newman spearheaded and masterminded some of the greatest advertisements that the industry has known, and gives the reader a chance to see how great ads like this come about. Through photographs and case studies the reader gains a private look into what may have seemed like the impossible. Newman's lessons, which are present on every page, ground the innovation and creativity that went on behind the scenes at Saatchi & Saatchi. Teachings in simplicity, the power of feelings, the power of visuals, and the power of just one word are all aspects of the creative process that the reader can take away from this book.

                  Most importantly, Newman teaches those in the media world how to stand out in a completely cluttered and saturated environment. His lessons do not just teach and deconstruct creativity, they provide a framework for the process that leads to advertisements that do not merely add to the noise, but break through it. His step by step analysis of the Toyota HiLux "Bugger" Ad relays how to be original and unique in an industry that is constantly outdoing itself. Newman convinces the reader that he is in the know merely through his style of writing, which is witty, succinct, and intelligent. Furthermore, he makes a point in the introduction of the book that his teachings are to be built upon, standing by the quote he uses at one point in the book that, "None of us is as smart as all of us." Essentially, this is a must read, because Newman sells his teachings as well as he sells his ads.

                  This may be one of the best books about creativity, brands and advertising ever written. Author Michael Newman's long, successful tenure with Saatchi and Saatchi, one of the most innovative ad firms in the world, is itself impressive. He knows how to get attention in a market where attention is a scarce resource. His so-called "ten lessons in effective advertising," really ten ideas about creativity, are unnecessary devices, probably a framework forced on a good book by an unimaginative editor. Read this book instead for the chrestomathy of quotations from literary and artistic innovators and thinkers. Read it for the asides, the tangents, the advertising war stories and the rambles. Read it for the shocking ads that push past the bounds of what anyone would consider acceptable. We recommend you read it for pleasure and for all these reasons; you'll get a lot more than ten lessons.

                  5 out of 5 stars Don't Make Your Advertising Look Like Everyone Else's.......2004-01-26

                  That's the message I delightfully took away from this absolutely wonderful, well written and very unique book. But alas, there is so much more.

                  As a proud member of the advertising club, I have long believed in stirring the pot and not looking like everyone else. But I've never read a book that presented it so eloquently as Creative Leaps by Michael Newman.

                  Newman tells it like it is about clients who butt in and create more problems than they help solve. Ditto for others who involve themselves in the creative process. He shows by demonstration how to create ads that work, that stand out and that sell like hell.

                  I also admit that, even with some thirty years of solid experience under my belt, I got some new (to me) and very helpful ideas. This book was worth twice what I paid for it.

                  I highly recommend this book to anyone in advertising, especially copywriters and creative directors. But also to anyone who might hire an ad agency or copywriter. It will help them to understand the creative process and to appreciate it more; to allow their creatives more freedom and to get the hell out of the way.

                  In fact, this book is totally different from any book about advertising or copywriting I've ever read and I totally love it. It will stay in my personal library. (No, I won't be selling it on Amazon like I do most of my books.) It will get read again and again and used as a reference for years to come.

                    There are many issues surrounding the notion of failure, from denial, to acceptance as a way of learning in order to succeed. I am pleased to see this book taking such a constructive attitude. To paraphrase, failure happens, learn from it, move on and mange effectively. In particular this notion is applied to Information Systems and the management of technology without which it would be hard to live and work in the 21st century. In other words you don't have to be in IT or on a technology management course to appreciate the impact information has. This book will help you to get there.

                    It is interesting and well thought through with some fantastic models typifying for me the real difference of systems thinking, the ability to connect learning and use different ways of communicating in order to get the best outcome. It is also written in a way that meant I could clearly hear the voices of the authors speaking as well as demonstrating their ideas in diagrams and text.

                    The case studies also help to illustrate the author's ideas by showing the consequences of failure over time. They have not been afraid to use some traditional, but what some might consider old fashioned, ideas of control and formal systems which I believe still have considerable relevance. They have integrated them well with newer models and concepts and so I recommend this book for professionals and students alike.
