        Book Description

The Regional Handbooks of Economic Development series provides accessible overviews of countries within their larger domestic and international contexts, focusing on the relations among regions as they meet the challenges of the twenty first century.

The series allows the non-specialist student to explore a wide range of complex factors-social and political as well as economic-that affect the growth of developing regions in Asia, Europe, and South America. Each Handbook provides an overview chapter discussing the region's economic conditions within an historical and political context, as well as 20 or more chapter-length essays written by recognized experts, which analyze the key issues affecting a region's economy: its population, natural resources, foreign trade, labor problems, and economic inequalities, and other vital factors.

In addition, the volumes offer useful support materials, including a series of appendices that include a detailed chronology of events in the region, a glossary of terms, biographical entries on key personalities, an annotated bibliography of further reading, and a comprehensive analytical index.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-11-03

Assessment never seems to be simple, but this book manages to boil it down to the main points. I like how it is organized, and the appendices offer some good starting points for tools that you can customize to suit your own needs.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for Help with Assessment.......2005-09-12

This book is an excellent resource for someone trying to understand how good assessment works. It is very easy to understand, provides lots of examples and doesn't try to confuse the reader by using excessive education jargon. A very good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2005-08-28

If your college is just beginning institutional assessment, then this is the book for you. It has several talking points that will allow faculty and the administration to join together in the task. Overall, I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical, highly usable.......2004-08-06

This is a great introduction to the assessment process with chapters specifically for departments and general education. The appendices include sample forms and processes for all types of assessment. A great practical resource for anyone responsible for creating an institutional or departmental assessment program. I know at my institution, faculty and administrators have been looking for something like this that can give them a concrete process for doing assessment. If you have only one book on assessment, this should be it. Other books fill in more about the theory and why, but the theory and why are nothing without implementation.

                    Book Description

There are a range of views of the strategic development process within organisations. Some see the process as being purely creative, with little or no scope for analysis at any stage (hunch-and-hope). Others see it as being over-formalised, static and focusing on producing a strategic plan rather than on actions. The approach adopted in this book argues that for effective strategic decision making, creativity needs to be supported by structured methods. The strategic development process consists of a series of elements which need to be working effectively for the process to ensure the successful development of the organisation. These elements include objective setting and performance measurement, strategic initiative formulation, strategic evaluation and a process for modelling uncertain/uncontrollable factors. The book then presents a range of hard and soft methods and models capable of supporting them. These include the balanced scorecard, visioning, the TOWS matrix, cognitive mapping, scenario development, systems dynamics modelling, transformation methods such as reengineering, strategic investment appraisal and real option theory. The book should be of interest to both academics and practitioners concerned with strategic development and those teaching and researching in the fields of strategic management, management science and operational research. The book is developed from a previous text Strategic Planning: Models and Analytical Techniques, (Wiley, 1992) following a similar approach and including some of the same methods and models but incorporating an entirely new set of articles including contemporary classics by Eden, Kaplan, Keeney, Porter, Schoemaker and others.

From the supplier: Strategic skills analysis (SSA) which necessitates evaluation of employees' and applicants' knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) is an effective means of recruiting and maintaining choice workforce who can meet the future needs of the organization and its customers. SSA also provides a much-needed link between business and human resource strategy. Consequently, use of SSA can be particularly helpful for developmental planning and training for strategically important KSAs.

People increasingly see their gardens as outdoor rooms, and they want to furnish and decorate them as attractively and comfortably as any other part of the home. Who doesn't dream of having coffee on the garden bench, eating lunch at a handmade picnic table, or snuggling with a lover under an arbor in the moonlight or in a gazebo during a thunderstorm?

Readily available, easy to work with, and inexpensive, wood is the ideal material for creating stylish and practical garden features. And you can often use low-cost, rough-cut wood straight from the sawmill for rustic, outdoor projects.

OUTDOOR WOODWORK offers 16 functional and attractive projects for the garden, including fences and gates, benches and chairs, decking, sheds, arbors, pergolas, trellises, planters, picnic tables, and a child's playhouse and treehouse. Each project has clear, step-by-step instructions and diagrams accompanied by full-color photographs showing the finished piece in its garden setting. Expert advice on staining and varnishing ensures that wooden garden features will stand up to the outdoor elements for years to come. This book is ideal as a reference for beginners and as a sourcebook of inspiration for more experienced do-it-yourself enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars I love the projects especially the Rabbit Hutch!.......2002-08-03

I bought this book for the Rabbit Hutch only.
The rabbit hutch is exactly what I wanted. Easy access, simple to build, and the rabbit will love it.
If you put legs on it, it could be used inside with a litter pan underneath, which is what I plan to do with it. But I'm also going to make one for outside as well because it is made so that it's easy to move around.

The other projects include a wheeled two-seater bench (love it), a picnic table (it's not your regular picnic table design), an arbor with a seat, and an arbor with a swing, a folding screen and a very small tool shed. These were the ones I liked the most.

                          Book Description

Italian industrial districts (IDs) recently attracted international attention because their performance during the last few decades contradicted the alleged weakness of industrial structures based on SMEs in "traditional" sectors. The book analyses some developments taking place in Italian IDs and local systems of production that can represent a new stage of evolution for the backbone of the Italian economy. Based on the extensive use of original databases three main trajectories of change in IDs are presented. The first trajectory is the increasing role of "groups" of manufacturing SMEs arising from mergers and acquisitions as well as spin-off growth processes at the "family firms" level. The second one is the consolidation of innovation capabilities in IDs. And the third one is the internationalisation process of Italian IDs through both trade and foreign direct investment. The essays suggest that Italian IDs are again evolving by coherent adaptations which will have, however, uncertain outcomes.

                            Description:
This paper investigates some plausible models of evolution of industrial districts (IDs) and clusters in light of the peculiar current features of technology and technological change. An insightful explanation of the variety of possible evolution of industrial clusters is provided focusing on the concept of 'technological regimes'. Within this interpretative framework, the authors carried out original field studies and survey questionnaires in Italy and Taiwan to gather microeconomic evidence on the restructuring efforts and sources of competitiveness of selected small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The shift in the technological paradigm, that applies to all sectors, requires a substantial industrial reorganisation. Firms traditionally operating within industrial districts need to reorganise their knowledge linkages from a cluster-based approach to a global and broader approach. A key explanation of the success of SMEs competing in globalized high-tech industries, supported by our survey evidence, is the co-evolution of domestic and international knowledge linkages. Inter-firm and inter-institution linkages need to be built to provide local SMEs with the necessary externalities to cope with the dual challenge of knowledge creation and internationalisation. In Taiwan, this took the form of global production networks.

                              Book Description

`This splendid addition to the literature on the Italian industrial districts deserves reading by all those that are interested in the local geography of production and innovation. Ivana Paniccia provides a fascinating critique of the "canonical" industrial district concept which leads her to an empirically based typology of industrial districts, whose evolution and performance follow distinct paths.'

                              - John Cantwell, University of Reading, UK

Utilizing a wide array of data and rich empirical evidence drawn from a large sample of industrial districts (IDs), Ivana Paniccia presents a realistic, state-of-the-art analysis of their socio-economic structure and performance. This extensive yet detailed study adopts a wide perspective, integrating historical evidence and different streams of literature - from industrial to regional economics - into testable hypotheses.

The multidisciplinary, quantitative approach adopted by the author, enables her to `de-structure' the `canonical' idea of the ID and evaluate the normative value. Supported by multivariate and econometric analyses, she identifies four general types of ID each with different development paths, performances, inter-organizational relations, and regulatory rules and institutions. The results demonstrate that IDs on average achieve better static or dynamic economic performance than non-ID areas. The analysis also highlights critical points of rupture in the socio-economic equilibrium of IDs which may impair their future competitiveness and social sustainability. The author offers a critical appraisal of the organizational literature on IDs, claiming for caution in their depiction as `cooperative systems' and goes on to present the first steps towards a `microfoundation' of a theory on IDs.

Providing the methodology to monitor the performance and evolution of IDs, together with precise policy suggestions, this book will appeal to a broad range of scholars and researchers in a variety of disciplines including regional, industrial and institutional economics, organizational studies and industrial sociology.

                                  Book Description

Local industrial clusters, such as Silicon Valley in the United States, have become an important subject of scholarly inquiry in recent years. This book offers a unifying view by capturing the general characteristics and prerequisites of local industrial clusters both on a theoretical as well as an empirical level.

The book establishes a mathematical model to analyze the dynamics of clustering and the conditions that are to be satisfied if a local industrial cluster is to evolve. This model allows predictions about the spatial distribution of firms to be deducted, which are empirically tested in the book. This thorough methodology allows the author to postulate upon whether the number of local clusters that emerge in an industry is random, or whether it is predetermined.

An impressive scholarly exercise, this book also contains important policy lessons. As such, Local Industrial Clusters will be a valuable read for policy-makers as well as academics.

                                    Book Description

The Technological Evolution of Industrial Districts collects a wide array of theoretical and empirical contributions on the issue of industrial districts and gives insights into the complexity of industrial clustering, which has received growing international attention in the last decade. The industrial district model has been acknowledged as a tool of local growth. Using this background, the contributors deal with the dynamics of economic and social processes that generate the various possible patterns of evolution at a local level. The authors analyze districts not just as spatial concentrations of specific industries but also as organizational forms that are created throughout an historical process rooted in the economic and social dimension of a specific place. This is the basis, they argue, on which activities, skills, knowledge, innovation, and institutions are settled, and continuously changed, in reaction to endogenous drifts and exogenous shocks. IDs are viewed here as densely populated industry-specific organizations composed of complementary enterprises, territorial identity, embedded institutions, trust, and social capital. In other words, the ID "formula" goes back to the idea of an existing "dominant" industry (or product) specialization in the territory and a close "community" of people and firms co-located in a small area that is typically smaller than a province. Starting from the Marshallian concept of clustering, the book incorporates the more recent literature on clusters, proposing a distinction among these terms often used as synonymous.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I provides a background discussion of the theory of industrial districts, bringing into the traditional Italian approach the Nordic studies based on the theory of knowledge-based organizations and the institutional perspective of the French regulation school. Part II, the book's core, develops a cognitive approach to the theory of industrial districts. Part III presents some empirical evidence on the new evolutionary design of traditional and high-tech industrial districts localized in Italy and in France.

This volume will be particularly useful as a reference work for policy makers and as a supplemental text for courses in applied economics and business, industrial organization, industrial districts/clusters management, and network economics.

Sam Hill and Chris Lederer say brand-dominated business strategies will be the true road to commercial success for at least 10 more years. But when they say it, they aren't talking about today's prevailing approach, in which brands owned by a single company are combined in the manner of the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer. That's old news, contend Hill and Lederer, marketing veterans and partners at Helios Consulting. The next level, they say, is "brand portfolios"--actively managed collections of every brand, regardless of ownership, that intersects with another. Developing and running such systems (like those that connect Intel, Microsoft, and Dell, for example) is the subject of The Infinite Asset, a sharp and practical guide to adopting their well-considered suggestions on handling brand portfolios in the same way that financial portfolios are managed. The authors look at case studies of 3M and Miller Beer, among others, which help readers visualize the relationships that tie their brands to each other and to the outside world. They also put together an eight-part "toolkit" that covers brand extensions and repositioning, as well as an organizational design for implementing brand-portfolio management. --Howard Rothman

                                    Book Description

Remember when brand management was as straightforward as promoting a single product or service? Today, brands mingle so much-McDonald's and Disney partner on promotional giveaways, Subaru markets an L.L. Bean edition of the Outback, Toys R Us and Amazon.com jointly launch an online toy store-a whole system of brands can make or break a product and a career. Once content to "mind their own brands," marketers need a radically different game plan to succeed in this complex marketplace.

In The Infinite Asset, Sam Hill and Chris Lederer unveil an ingenious strategy-the Brand Portfolio Approach-that exponentially increases the value of brands by exploding them beyond the boundaries of their division or even their parent company. The authors argue that a company's brand portfolio must reflect how the target customer actually views the brand; it must encompass every brand-whether the company owns it or not-that affects the buying decision.

Based on thirty years of consulting experience and extensive research across industries, the authors introduce a breakthrough 3-D mapping tool-the brand portfolio molecule-that lets managers visualize all elements of a brand and how they interact to create new value. Compelling case studies apply the model to the brand strategies of companies including 3M, Cadillac, Miller Beer, and Yahoo!. In addition, a comprehensive set of implementation tools guide marketers in using the model to:
                                    · identify the "lead brand" in the eyes of the customer
                                    · find and fill product holes
                                    · decide whether to extend, prune, or reposition a brand
                                    · arrive at the right number of brands
                                    · determine how and when to use a corporate brand as an umbrella
                                    · allocate marketing funds most effectively
                                    · trace brand value using informative metrics
                                    · convert brand equity into shareholder value and more

The first to provide a holistic model for brand value creation and management, this book is the must-have guide to leveraging every company's infinite asset for lasting competitive advantage.

Sam Hill was Chief Marketing Officer at Booz·Allen & Hamilton; he is now a partner at Helios Consulting and co-author of Radical Marketing. Chris Lederer, once a brand manager at Lever Brothers and a Senior Associate at Booz·Allen, is also a partner at Helios.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Useful ... written by a consultant ..........2002-01-21

This book does provide a valuable summary of others works in branding. Helps to explain and clarify how many different items have a link to your brand and shape the percpetion of it in customers minds. Not a new thought, but again a good succint summary that reminded me to think through how such relationships add value or take away from the organization and brands I work for. What this book does add is a way to depcit these relationships on a 3 dimensional model. Interesting ... but I would question the value of the time and effort spent to create such a diagram. I don't think the authors would disagree with me when I say it is the thought process that makes the difference .. not the fancy depiction.

5 out of 5 stars An alternative look at branding.......2001-11-07

Hill and Lederer in this book give us a very convincing argument why branding must be treated as an asset on line with products and intellectual properties. They introduce us to the "brand portfolio molecule" [BPM], which comes across as a very powerful tool to understand the relationship between not only the different brands in a company's portfolio but also to other brands outside the direct control of the company as perceived by the customer. With this information the authors move on to show how active brand portfolio management can be used to identify new growth opportunities both within the portfolio and as natural extensions.
The book is full of actual examples of good and bad practice, and it covers both established companies that turns to active brand portfolio management and newcomers, that incorporate it from the beginning.
The message in this book is not only for marketing people but also very much for the business leader, who wants to understand the power of brands and how he or she can use it to grow the company.

The true challenge for any business book is to be both interesting and relevant. The Infinite Asset was worth the time for me, and I think it will be for a wide range of audiences. Those managing large portfolios (and of course the consultants aspiring to help them) will like the "big idea" first section. Those managing individual brands, people trying to break into brand mgmt, and new MBAs will appreciate the second section.

Yes, it is organized more as two books in one, and often the best statement of the concept is at the end, rather than the beginning of the chapter. But it is well written (has great quotations) a fast read for the complexity of thought and experience it contains. Worth the time.
