    3 out of 5 stars Lists and More Lists.......2007-05-22

    I think I'd rather I'd read this at Barnes and Noble or at a library than bought the book. It's good for people who need help learning about the disability and are new to the subject, specifically for elemetery age kids. But for those who are older of us who are looking to learn some new things, it's a giant book of lists and you know how organized us ADD people are... Hey look something shiney!

    5 out of 5 stars Great tool to help us raise our children.......2006-06-26

    The ADHD book of list is a great guide to discovering the facts about ADHD and what can be done to work with a child who has been diagnosed with it and help him or her to be successful in life. It is appropriate for parents, counselors, educators and an community member who comes in contact with children and adults with this disorder.

    5 out of 5 stars this book is HUGE!.......2005-07-24

    I didn't expect this book to be so huge...in size and also in the amount of info. i just received this book today and have skimmed over most of the info in it. i have already found several pages that i will photocopy and give to my child's teacher. the way that the information is presented is easy to follow, easy to locate, and easy to understand. well worth the money and time spent reading it from cover to cover.

    5 out of 5 stars Recommended by Psychologist.......2004-02-08

    If you buy only one book on ADD, make it this one.

    It is huge, comprehensive, terrifically well organized and uniquely easy to use. Because it is presented in list form, you can turn to the topic you need and get more information in two or three pages than most books contain in a 25 page chapter that takes you much, much longer to read.

    And if you are a parent of a child or teen with ADD, you simply do not have extra time. You will get what you need here and get it fast.

    There are even sample forms (goals sheets, behavioral records, and charts) that are easy to copy and use.

    This book will make your life easier!

    5 out of 5 stars Great buy!.......2003-06-13

    Without a doubt, this is the most comprehensive and easy-to-read book on AD/HD I have ever read. This book would be an excellent reference for any classroom with AD/HD students. The list format makes finding what you're looking for a pleasant experience. Plus, I've been able to incorporate many of the strategies presented in this book, and I'm extremely pleased with the results.

    Winning the Innovation Game
    by Robert Tucker & Denis Waitley

    How to Profit from Today's Rapid Changes
    by Robert Tucker

    Innovative Secrets of Success
    by Robert Tucker & Denis Waitley

    During the late eighties/early nineties, while pursuing my personal interests in understanding 'entrepreneurial opportunity search & recognition' skills, I came across three wonderful books. Two were entitled, 'Opportunities: A Handbook for Opportunity Search' by Edward de Bono, & 'The Innovation Formula' by Michel Robert.

    The remaining third book was 'Winning the Innovation Game' by Robert Tucker & Denis Waitley. During the period, both authors were well-known thought leaders, with the former in 'innovation circles' & the latter in 'peak performance.'

    'Winning the Innovation Game' captured the pioneering work of the principal author, who had interviewed more than fifty successful & innovative executives, entrepreneurs & financiers during

    the eighties. Their 'innovative secrets of success' were sprinkled generously throughout the book, arranged with the following layout of chapters:

    - The Innovator Defined;
    - Winning Strategy;
    - Innovation Self-Inventory;
    - Becoming Your Own Trend Spotter;
    - Improving Quality of Your Thinking;
    - Proven Strategies for Working with Ideas;
    - Tapping the Power of Your Informed Intuition;
    - Finding Innovative Opportunities of Your Own;
    - Discovering Your Breakthrough Idea;
    - Building Your Breakthrough Idea;
    - Elements of Risk Taking;
    - Building Your Team;
    - Staying on the Game;

    I reckon the most exciting & valuable aspects of the author's interview results in the book were the following revelations:

    - how to spot changes & trends before your competitors do;
    - how to analyze trends & format strategies to profit from them;
    - how to develop your own "future scan system" to keep you from missing out on important developments;
    - how to distinguish between passing fads & the kind of changes that will reshape the marketplace;

    I have also enjoyed exploring the self-questioning checklist in one of the chapters, which I would like to reproduce as follows:

    - what do I really enjoy doing that I'd like to do more of?
    - where's the niche that hasn't been developed?
    - how can I position myself in a way that is different?
    - how can I make a living from doing what to one is fun, challenging & never boring?
    - what might my customer group want if it were available?
    - what can I offer they (the competitors) aren't offering?
    - what would make this process or procedure more convenient?
    - where is the market inefficiency?
    - what's next for me, inc?
    - What would people pay for that isn't available yet?
    - how can I do this less expensively?
    - how can I add value to the service or product I now produce?

    The other titles I have listed above are basically abridged audio versions of the book.

    'How to Profit from Today's Rapid Changes' was published in March 1988 by Simon & Schuster, while the other was published in March 1989 by Nightingale-Conant. I believe the audio versions are still available for download from online stores like audible &/or or learnoutloud websites.

    Although many of the stuff in the three titles were produced prior to the internet era, most of the strategies revealed in the book were pretty generic & could be applicable in today's context.

    In comparison with 'Opportunities' & 'The Innovation Formula' which are more intellectually intense, content-wise, (& which are also written by more established authors), this book has a slight dose of a broad brush. Nevertheless, there are still many valuable expert tips for readers from this book.

    Like I have often said in my many reviews, good books on 'entrepreneurial opportunity search & recognition' skills are rare. 'Winning the Innovation Game' is therefore a real gem.

    [I recommend readers to read also Robert Tucker's 'Driving Growth through Innovation' & Denis Waitley's 'Empires of the Mind: Lessons to Lead & Succeed in a Knowledge-based World.']

              A cultural milestone.

              Canada is home to immigrants from every nation in the world. Quilting artist Esther Bryan wanted to celebrate this fact, to promote a sense of greater belonging among these diverse groups. A quilt would be a collaborative, community-based project to celebrate cultural diversity.

              Each cultural group contributed one 11-inch square pieced into a giant quilt named the Quilt of Belonging. The quilt is approximately 120 feet long by 10 feet high (36 m by 3.5 m). It consists of 263 squares representing 71 Aboriginal groups and 192 immigrant nationalities found in Canada.

              The quilt includes fabric that has been appliqued, beaded, cross-stitched, embroidered, and hand-woven. The many cultural decorations include:

              The Quilt of Belonging will be exhibited in spring 2005 with an opening show at Canada's Museum of Civilization and then will become part of a traveling exhibit of stitches and stories that visits museums and community centers throughout Canada and beyond.

              Book Description

              Peter Bauer (Lord Bauer) was an economist of considerable influence, particularly on the prevailing wisdom about the value of foreign aid ('government-to-government transfers', as he preferred to call it). Shortly before his death, in May 2002, he received the first award of the prestigious Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty from the Cato Institute in Washington DC. This volume begins with a transcript of a conversation with Lord Bauer in which he speaks about his career, his interactions with other economists and his contributions to economic analysis. Following that, there is a speech given by John Blundell at the Friedman Prize award ceremony that came just after Lord Bauer's death. The final sections contain ten tributes to Lord Bauer, written by distinguished economists who knew him well, who appreciated his influence and who saw his work form different perspectives. They provide an appraisal of the life and work of a great economist who fundamenta! lly affected the analysis of economic development.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Tribute to a Great Champion of the Poor.......2003-04-24

              Almost a year ago Lord (Peter) Bauer died, 86 years young. The Classical Liberal world lost one of it's leading lights and yet at the same time, across the world millions of people do not know that one of their strongest supporters is no longer with us.

              Peter Bauer was a man in a million. His work on the economics of less developed countries led him to the belief that the best policies to help the people in those countries are those that allow freedom and enterprise to flourish or as Adam Smith would have it, to truck, barter and exchange. Sounds reasonable? Well perhaps now but back in the 1960s and '70s this was akin to heresy. Bauer's voice was as one crying in the wilderness and he was denigrated throughout the economics profession. Bauer committed what was thought to be a cardinal sin in those days which was to argue the case against aid, a case which has now largely been won.

              Bauer persisted with his view and his work despite the enormous pressure of the opposition and in the end he prevailed. He dissented against much of the orthodoxy of the corpus of knowledge of development economics especially in the area of population. He supported the individual against the state and recognised the capacity of the individual to make the right decisions for themselves and for their families not just in the short term but also in the medium and long terms and would make better decisions that the governments might.

              Peter Bauer was a brave man and not just intellectually but also physically, standing firm in the face of strong opposition from student protests against his carefully thought out views.

              Not a man to suffer fools, gladly or otherwise, Peter Bauer was a consumate seeker of truth, a scholar and a gentleman who would think the unthinkable and use his finely honed skills to substantiate his conclusions.

              This is a wonderful little book which plays a fitting tribute to a remarkable thinker who deserves greater recognition inthe pantheon of the great economists than he has achieved so far. Any serious student of developing countries should invest in a copy of this book as an introduction to the thought of an economic colossus.

              A "highly illuminating" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) book that fundamentally transforms the whole debate about the cultural significance of advertising.

              Customer Reviews:

              1 out of 5 stars Does American History End in 1900?.......2001-07-04

              Advertising has become ubiquitous, on television, in the subway, on web pages, even on clothing. Even our ideas and opinions, religions and romances, have become commodified, slanted, and marketed. And most of the flood of commodification is the product of the postwar communications boom. Before 1950, one had newspapers, magazines, radio, and the occasional newsreel. Before 1900, one had placards and fliers.

              So why is this book exclusively about the 19th century? The 19th century deserves 1 chapter, not all 400 pages. I am only vaguely interested in P.T. Barnum, but fascinated by how Tony the Tiger recreated American breakfasts during the Baby Boom. Or if Lear wanted to aim his book at historians, why the audacity to title it "a cultural history of American advertising"? It omits the most interesting eras of American advertising.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent, and counterintuitive.......2000-11-18

              Most people find advertising very irritating. This is not only understandable, but necessary and just. But what is it about advertising that should put one's teeth on edge? It is easy to believe that advertising encourages a world of greed and gaudy consumerism, a life of sterile self-indulgence. This was the view of the great American critic Thorstein Veblen. But one should avoid this temptation. In this book Jackson Lears provides a book that is not only revelatory about advertising but will help the reader about culture, nostalgia, memory, even life itself.

              Lears, a historian who is not afraid to quote Marxists, agrees with Adorno that Veblen's attack on consumerism was an "attack against culture." Veblen represented a puritanical producerism that did not recognize the aesthetic and imaginative elements of consumption. Lears throughout this subtle and evocative book argues that advertising did not present the triumph of hedonism, but in fact the regulation of consumption to a strict regime of productivity, a trade-off between "routinized labor and zestful consumption." The book does not follow a simple narrative. But it does provide a fascinating account with many pregant apercus about the cold presence of an inhumane positivism, as well as the flaws of both the jargon of authenticity and the New York Intellectuals conflation of politics and style. Starting with the image of the breast and the cornocopia, and going on to the illusions of the Plain speech tradition, Lears looks not only at advertisements, but also cites much literature and theory to help him along. Melville, Dreiser, James and Proust are all invoked, Little Nemo and Krazy Kat are properly praised, coming to a benediction looking at the special achievement of Joseph Cornell and his boxes. Some readers of this review may find this summary pretentious, but those who go on to read Lears will find much that is truly revelatory.

              2 out of 5 stars Intellectual bricolage?.......2000-01-26

              ONLY BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE TO. The only reason I bought this "door stop" was because it was a required reading for one of my university cources. It's a monolith. It's large and no one can make sense of it. You need a dictionary by your side when you tackle this beast; however, many of the words used in the book are not even listed. Lears' entire perspective is based on a word I've never heard of..."bricolage". Try looking it up! The only way to find out what it means is to go ask Claude Levi-Straus himself. I think Lears should have based his perspective on clarity not bricolage.

              4 out of 5 stars wordy but gratifying.......1999-03-16

              Fables of Abundance is not an easy book to read. Lears sometimes takes relatively simple ideas and complicates them with wordy rhetoric. If you can get through it, however, Fables of Abundance offers a novel approach to looking at the history of advertising. It does not discuss particular ad campaigns or products like many books of its type. It instead focusses on advertising's reoccuring themes (i.e. the carnivalesque) and images (i.e. woman as symbol of abundance). The author also provides biographies of important figures in the history of advertising. Overall, if you have patience and a dictionary, Fables of Abundance is for you.

                  Book Description

                  This text discusses the emerging trend in product development and research that focuses on the increasingly important relationship between computer systems and social systems. The text emphasizes the significance of building tools to help people work together and the need for the identification of key factors within an organization to create systems more beneficial to users. Also contained are reviews of current research and discussions of both established tools, such as electronic mail and computer conferencing, and those newly developed programs that emphasize "work group" productivity over individual productivity.
