Book Description
This major original reference work includes over one hundred specially commissioned articles on the lives and writings of women who made significant contributions to economics. It sheds new light on the rich, but too often neglected, heritage of women's analysis of economic issues and participation in the discipline of economics. In addition to those who wrote in English, some notable Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish women economists are included. This book will transform widely-held views about the past role of women in economics, and will stimulate further research in this exciting but underdeveloped field. It is dedicated to the memory of Michèle Pujol, a pioneer in the field.

Excellent College Guide.......2004-08-30
This is one of the best college guides I have ever read. It's very informative and it's ratings of the academic, social etc. aspects of the colleges give a very nice scope. What I like most about it is that it lists the strongest majors in each college, not just the most popular ones...the first book I have seen with this.
I've heard that the essays aren't entirely updated each year, like advertised, but I haven't bought any of the previous versions, and the essays are still very helpful.
One of the BEST
Biggest of the Big.......2004-08-16
I thought this would be a great "second opinion" to the popular U.S. News & World Report. I was greatly mistaken. It listed the biggest, best known schools, and left out many many schools that are medium, or smaller size, and/or lesser known. It listed only 2 Ky. schools! This book would be helpful to someone considering ONLY the biggest/most popular name schools. Those desiring a thorough search to find their best fit need to go elsewhere. I agree with a previous reviewer that the school descriptions were all so favorable, that one really couldn't evaluate properly. This book will be donated to local high school library as soon as I can get rid of it.
Everything cast in a positive light.......2004-08-12
Although my high school senior daughter and I are finding this book to have good information, we both noted that every review tells you how great the school is. You can still distinguish the differences between schools based on your own filters, but after you have read two or three reviews, it starts to feel more like marketing material than like "tell it like it is" analysis.
Not All That I Expected.......2003-11-18
I was disappointed that there were only reviews of about five or six New Jersey colleges. I was expecting a larger representation. Schools such as Montclair and Ramapo were absent from the catalogue.
I was considering returning the book, but there was other material in the book that could prove useful so I decided to save myself the trouble and just keep it.
Read This Before Choosing A College.......2003-10-26
This is a perennial leader in college reference books. It has near everything about near every college. So, how do you make the right choice? The answer is, understand the real purpose of college education as told by the greatest educators, such as education pioneer Thomas Jefferson. To understand, I suggest you read the book based on Thomas Jefferson's wisdom called "West Point: Character Leadership Education: Thomas Jefferson" by Norman Thomas Remick before you make any decisions. It's a heads up. It will help you make the right decision so that you will have no regrets later down the road. It brings the real purpose of education into clear focus for you before you go on to pour over the colleges in Edward B. Fiske's "The Fiske Guide To Colleges 2004"

The Power of Purpose: Creating Meaning in Your Life and Work, by respected life/work planning specialist Richard Leider, is a lofty yet down-to-earth guide for people struggling to find their true professional callings. Developed through the author's considerable personal experience and extensive interviews conducted over the past 20 years, it's designed to serve as a jumping-off point for those who'd truly like to combine their "own unique gifts" with "the needs of the world" to carve out a vocational niche that's both individualized and highly rewarding. A helpful guide to using the material in a reading group is included.
Book Description
"Purpose" and "calling" seem at first to be grand words, applicable to only a gifted few. But career coach Richard Leider argues that everyone possesses a true calling, as well as the unique talents needed to support it. Filled with useful tools for self-assessment, The Power of Purpose helps readers uncover their own talents and aspirations, and shows how to incorporate "the common sense of soul" into everyday life. Interviews with people of all ages provide inspiring examples of those who have created lives filled with meaning and passion.

Obstacle2.......2007-01-03
I agree with other reviewers about positive points in this book, but what bothers me is the examples given : they all seem to be very special people : trainers, founders of training centers, vice-presidents of companies,....
This confirms obstacle 2 as given by the author : "only a few special people have true purpose in their lives". I think we have a need for purpose in our lives, even if we are a gardener, a pizza boy, a cleaning lady, a sweatshop youngster sewing T-shirts in Laos, an office clerk doing standard routine work. It is a pity that we find no such examples in this book. From the book we get the impression that the only way to find a purpose is to quit our present job and to become a trainer, writer, etc... but there are also other jobs to fill, I think. Moreover, if everybody goes into training and/or writing, these jobs will loose their financial attractiveness, I suspect.
This book is a must read! For negotiating mid-life transition, it's a very helpful guide!.......2006-10-28
I have read many of Richard Leider's books, & among them I consider 'The Power for Purpose' as the most influential on my personal growth. I have read this particular one in the late eighties/early nineties - about the time I started to ponder about what I want to do with the second half of my life. I was then a successful corporate rat, working in quiet desperation - looking damned good but actually going nowhere.
The 'Power of Purpose' is not another book about goal setting. It's a workbook to help you think through & decide whether you want to choose to lead a purposeful, productive & meaningful life. In fact, the parts that attracted me most at that time were these questions posed at the beginning of the book:
- Is your work rich & purposeful?
- Do you see yourself, through your work, as making a difference in the world?
- Do you view most work days with a sense of enthusiasm?
- Have you developed your won philosophy of life & success?
- Do you feel a sense of meaning & purpose for your life/
- Are you living your life now - or hoping that life will work out someday?
It comes complete with self-assessment questionnaires, checklists, & exercises. I recall I had spent considerable effort & time in using them to probe my life during that period of time. Together with a few other books (including Frederic Hudson's, Marsha Sinetar's & Joe Dominguez's), this book has been instrumental in creating abundant opportunities for doing what I love & loving what I do. Many thanks to you, Richard!
Since then, one of the tools that I have picked up from the book for continuing ultilisation till today is the purposeful reflection: soloing & journaling from Chapter 19. This one is a real gem! Also, from this particular chapter, I have made use of &/or adapted all the strategies as outlined in the author's 'Other Strategies for Self Management'. They have really helped me in realising total satisfaction & fulfillment in my life!
To end my review, I want to say this: This book is a must read! If you are going through a mid-life transition, just like what I had gone through during the early nineties, I can guarantee this book is definitely a very helpful guide!
Your Simple Truth [....].......2001-08-01
In 1999, I read this book 3 times, during what I still say had to have been the worst possible time in my life. It was a time of profound family betrayal, or acceptance of what I didn't want to believe about who my family really is, what they had expected of me for my 43 years of life, and the role that I blindly held. This book was a painfully compelling book for me to read, yet one that had supported me through my crisis, and led me to convert my family history into becoming a public speaker, a gender-based self-esteem coach, and a journalist. Last week, I decided to read this again, as I noticed that I am being invited to events that signal to me that I have made giant steps since reading this book in 1999. I am so excited about writing and presenting tailored training to make a difference in each of my client's lives. I had written so many introspective documents, for so long, that now, even though I continue to introspectively write, I am consciously and unconsciously talking as someone who is here to make a difference in everyone whose life I do touch in some way. I have found a level of peace through reading Richard J. Leider's book that required me to look deeply in my soul and befriend everything about myself. I actually giggle when I reread my journals from 1999, where I had written profound painful feelings that I experienced. I giggle because I see how I weathered my way through living the life I am meant to live. I gave myself or found in myself gifts that I definitely approve of having.
Regardless of where you are in your life, I suggest that you read this book, with a pen in hand to write down what you are thinking and feeling. Accept that this will be scary, at first. Do this, knowing that you deserve to love yourself for all who you are -- you are sent here to make a difference.
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-01
Richard J. Leider believes everyone needs to find an individual sense of unique purpose. When you have this sense of purpose, you can use it as a central core of direction to guide your life and give it meaning. The book is simply written, easy to understand and targeted to a general audience. However, it also seems quite repetitious, in that the same ideas are explained many different ways. Some of these concepts are quite familiar, echoing some basic ideas about the importance of having a sense of mission, path, and goals, much like Laurie Beth Jones' book, The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement.... Finally, while some readers may respond deeply to Leider's spiritual and religious references, others may find them problematic, given the split in the business community about spirituality in the workplace. We... recommend this book for readers who have not yet considered this mission-focused dimension of life planning and for managers who wish to understand this perspective.
Very disappointing.......2000-07-31
Power of Purpose would make a great magazine article, but there is not enough content here to make a good book. "Creating Meaning in Your Life..." is not what this book is about. There is lots of talk about how important it is to have purpose in your life, but little about how to create it. Mr. Leider has a great reputation -- it must have come from his other books.

The most thorough, valid set of findings on global manufacturing and winning practices worldwide
This eye-opening resource sets a new standard for how manufacturing practices are viewed in today's business world. The results of an extensive research project spanning 164 factories in the United States, Japan, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom determine the best path to high performance manufacturing. This is one of the first books to offer comparisons of manufacturing in these five countries, addressing their current issues and providing insights that affect manufacturing worldwide.
Researchers from such universities as the London Business School, Wake Forest University, Yokohama University, and the University of Minnesota detail how manufacturing leaders are raising the bar on practices in product development, organizational alignment, quality management, and more. Covering the vital areas of machinery, electronics, and auto components, they examine the most effective methods and techniques across a host of functions within manufacturing-looking at how everything from new technology and information systems to human resource practices and manufacturing strategy should be introduced into a plant environment to achieve high performance manufacturing.
Using data from companies such as Texas Instruments, Honda, Sony, Prince, John Deere, and Caterpillar, High Performance Manufacturing takes a comprehensive view by showing how to select and integrate the practices that best fit a plant's particular situation-the most critical and difficult task to achieve in practice. With its strong research base and high caliber of contributors, this unique volume will inspire managers of any country or industry to set their own path to high performance manufacturing.

A groundbreaking guide to making one of marketing's most important resources more effective
When kids in a Nabisco focus group told researchers that they always separated their Oreos before they ate them, the researchers recommended that the company develop a cookie that couldn't be taken apart. Fortunately, in this case, Nabisco didn't heed the researchers' advice. Each year, companies spend a billion dollars on focus groups designed to ferret out consumer motivation, and, according to expert Bonnie Goebert, in many cases they're throwing their money away. In this fascinating book, Goebert, a highly respected moderator with three decades of experience with focus groups, explains what's wrong with how companies use the information. More importantly, she draws on her own experiences with clients like the New York Times, Tropicana, Maxwell House, Colgate, Maybelline, Lipton, Federal Express, and scores of other prestigious accounts to provide simple clear-cut guidelines on how companies of just about any size can use focus groups to capture the hearts and minds of consumers.
Bonnie Goebert (Southampton, NY) heads her own focus group consulting firm.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely useful words from a colleague who has seen it all. This is the real thing........2007-05-08
Too many Market Research books tend to be dry tomes, focusing on quantitative methods but written in a fairly theoretical style: they talk about why research is useful, and how surveys are conducted. Ho hum.
But here is a Market Research book that feels real. Bonnie Goebert is a senior researcher who has run countless groups and experienced the hard crunch of difficult respondents and the challenge of digging into topics that others find difficult to articulate. She knows the score: and knows that the mission is bring back to the client a living, breathing understanding of what motivates their customers and what will drive success.
Bonnie has an ethnusiastic, grab-your-lapels style of writing and sharing her insights and experience, and this is what gives the book a very real credibility. She comes over as the senior guru everyone wishes they could learn from.
If there's a main theme here, it is her passion for going beyond description ("respondents said this...") and nailing the insightful idea that follows. As she says: the zip-loc bag didn't get invented because consumers wanted a zip-loc bag. It got invented because somebody listened to consumers discuss the mundane daily battle to wrap Johnny's sandwiches and store yesterday's left-over meatloaf.
In this sense the book is a zesty hybrid between a how-to guide on running groups and an example-laden treatise on how big ideas come from little insights. Bonnie goes beyond simple listening, and she encourages us to do the same. A great read for researchers, ad agency strategists and marketers alike.
Two other books on focus groups you might like to follow up: The very original guidebook: Focused Interview and a lightweight introduction for qualitative newbies: Moderating to the Max: A Full-Tilt Guide to Creative Insightful Focus Groups and Depth Interviews
Terrific read.......2006-12-11
This book is a great collection of insights and case studies of how other companies have utilized qualitative research methods to uncover key learnings and how they have both successfully and unsuccessfully implemented ideas for the consumer. A terrific read for all marketers.
Really insightful.......2003-02-14
I usually don't write reviews, but this book compelled me. I have read a lot of books, but I really learned something from this one. My advertising approach will be different from now on.
People Insights for Marketing Mavens.......2002-01-08
Warm, well written, insider's book based on thirty years of focus group research. Written with a voice that listens. Bonnie Goebert obviously likes people and likes listening. Her insights into customer motivation would help anyone who wants to sell anything to anybody, especially corporate types who sometimes forget that the consumer is us.
Sell More Product, Read This Book.......2002-01-08
I loved this book and I wish all those high flying ad agency people would read it. What are the thoughts that float through a homemaker's mind as he pushes his cart through the supermarket? You know what yours are, but do you know what his are? Bonnie Goebert says listen, ask the right questions. Don't try to con, talk down to or objectify the consumer because the consumer is us. This is the perfect book for account executives, art directors, copywriters, market researchers and anyone who's ever wondered how people make the decisions they do when they go to buy a product, any product. It's full of interesting anecdotes about human behavior, insightful observations and common sense conclusions that could help any company looking to jump start their business. It's lively, well written, and as the culmination of thirty years of focus group moderating, impecably researched. If more ad agencies and CEO's read this book, they'd find out who we really are...and what we really want. Wouldn't that be nice?

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive book to present, in English, the multicriteria methodology for decision aiding. In the foreword the distinctive features and main ideas of the European School of MCDA are outlined. The twelve chapters are essentially expository in nature, but scholarly in treatment. Some questions, which are too often neglected in the literature on decision theory, such as how is a decision made, who are the actors, what is a decision aiding model, how to define the set of alternatives, are discussed. Examples are used throughout the book to illustrate the various concepts. Ways to model the consequences of each alternative and building criteria taking into account the inevitable imprecisions, uncertainties and indeterminations are described and illustrated. The three classical operational approaches of MCDA: synthesis in one criterion (including MAUT), synthesis by outranking relations, interactive local judgements, are studied. This methodology tries to be a theoretical or intellectual framework directed towards formulating recommendations for action.
Audience:The book is addressed to graduate students, postgraduates and researchers in management sciences, operations research or decision analysis, as well as all scientists who use models and methods for guiding decisions. In addition all those who, in business and administration, wish to take part in decision-making through scientific reasoning will be interested. The contents of the book are organized in such a way as to help individuals with different backgrounds and interests chart an appropriate course through the chapters (see Reader's Guide in the front-matter).
