Book Description
This Review is a part of an ongoing effort by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to examine and illustrate the main issues for tackling urban poverty in the cities of Asia and the Pacific. It discusses the concerns that have emerged within the context of urban poverty reduction in recent years, and covers topics such as factors critical to poverty reduction, stakeholder involvement and the importance of good governance. The publication also contains a selection of practices that show the variety of challenges facing the cities of the region and the ways in which governments are addressing them.
Book Description
This book uses practical applications and an accessible writing style to present a summary of psychological research on students' learning of academic subject areas.
The book is organized into two main sections: the general principles of learning, memory, higher-order thinking, and motivation that apply to any school-related skill and specific developmental trends in the acquisition of skills in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Unlike typical books on cognitive development, these general principles are explicitly translated to classroom practice. The reader will learn what children can understand and do at various ages in these domains.

In recent years, the U.S. Army has been modified and modernized more extensively than almost any private business. Leading the charge on this front were General Gordon R. Sullivan, chief of staff from 1991-95, and one of his key strategic planners, Colonel Michael V. Harper. In
Hope Is Not a Method, these two explain just how an organization with 1.5 million employees and a $63-billion annual budget was successfully reengineered--and how those in the corporate world can learn from the experience.
Book Description
Since the end of the Cold War, the United States Army has been reengineered and downsized more thoroughly than any other business. In the early 1990s, General Sullivan, army chief of staff, and Colonel Harper, his key strategic planner, took the post-Cold War army into the Information Age. Faced with a 40 percent reduction in staff and funding, they focused on new peacetime missions, dismantled a cumbersome bureaucracy, reinvented procedures, and set the guidelines for achieving a vast array of new goals.
Hope Is Not a Method explains how they did it and shows how their experience is extremely relevant to today's businesses. From how to stay on top of long-range issues to how to maintain a productive work force during times of change, it offers invaluable lessons in leadership and provides proven tactics any business can implement.
Customer Reviews:
Military terrrible model for running a business.......2005-09-29
I have been an active duty army officer for twelve years, and all I can say is don't follow the advice in this book. Do you really want your organization run like the military? Sychophants placed in good postions, everyone scared to think outside the box, the inability to fire a screw-up, doctrinaire thinking? Sullivan didn't "re-engineer" the army. Nobody has. The only thing transformed in the military is it's PR machine. There has been a lot of the military tooting its own horn about its "post-Vietnam transformation." Don't believe it. This book will teach you nothing about leadership, and nothing about management. The army has an public image of being the forge for leadership. What people don't seem to realize is that in the army, people follow not because of leadership, but because they go to jail if they don't. This book demonstrates how clueless some of the people in the top slots are.
The book the press should have read.......2004-08-03
I know this is a business book, but it's more, it's a case study, and anyone who has been the defense industry or large government acquisitions - can relate. Budget, schedule, source selection, contract management, program & technology management... it seems at times--overwhelming. Managing projects of this scope are like juggling chainsaws, especially when wrapped so tightly with budget and schedule, or changing schedules as technology changes and emerges during the course of an acquisition. Then it's rework and modifications to contract, it's extreamly dynamic! Interconnectivity along the differing nodes (USN, USAF, USA, USMC, USCG, HQ, Pentagon...) was incredible. Defense contracting is HUGE, INNOVATIVE and it's NOT like running a sandwich shop or a gas station. Totally different realm. Just the technological advances from 1992 to 2000 were staggering, managing that aspect of the acquisition took strict attention to detail and a hand on the pulse of the industry. No sense fielding a system which needs a major technology upgrade 2 years after FRP.
Remember Winter 2003? I couldn't believe the press questions during tactical updates... if they had read THIS book they would have completely understood the capability, innovation and the battlefield overview the ARMY possessed. Instead we get the usual uninformed prattle about how bad the losses were going to get, or how will our Army ever survive the onslaught of the RNG. The U.S. owned the night, had total control over every aspect associated with the dissemination of the opposing forces.
Example: in 1992 it took 10 minutes to acquire and put ordnance on a target. In 2003 it took 2 minutes, 45 seconds of which was the time the ordnance was in the air enroute to impact. That's impressive, that's technology at work, that's why this book is a must read for every business major or military professional or... the press.
Otherwise, you're just uninformed.
Hope is Not A Method.......2004-07-13
The reader would have to be the same age and gender, and possess the same beliefs, values and military experiences as the authors to stay awake while reading their book. I could not begin to relate to all the "war stories" coupled with the dry, tedious writing style, I found myself craving a wet martini.
I have read before on many topics I can not personally relate to; I just finished a fascinating story about a man being caught in an unexpected avalanche and trapped in its snow for an hour or so. The writing style literally picked me up and placed me in his journey. Unfortunately, all 260 pages in "Hope Is Not A Method" evoked a feeling like being stuck for all eternity in a dark snow bank. The authors' beliefs are so focused as to be beyond narrow-minded.
"We believe that by applying our ideas from the battlefield that we were able to effect ..." was a concept played over and over again. The authors boldly tried to transfer battlefield principles to the world of business. A fundamental flaw, as successful correlations were not made from the war room thinking the business boardroom, where profit is the goal. A perfect book for aspiring military leaders. Not useful for all others
Does not meet commander's intent. Lacks concept of operation.......1999-07-04
I'm an active duty soldier and business student. I have experience in the civilian business world, and will re-enter business upon completion of my term. Mr. Sullivan apparently has little experience outside of the military, and it shows. Although much can be learned from the military in terms of structure, team development, and decision making, it must be severely tempered with a dose of good business sense. The Army does not operate for profit, and therefore will never achieve the same level of pursuit of excellence that a highly motivated businessman can. Because the Army lacks both customers and shareholders, underperforming leaders routinely get away with murder in their progress reports, since much of what they do in peacetime is subjectively interpreted. In business, profit and loss are not easily concealed, and underperformers are shown the door. Change is painfully slow in the Army's layered bureacracy, and a modern business this sloth-like soon becomes lunch. The authors obscure any possible connections to civilain business practices by conspicuous absence of examples and analogies, instead substituting "there I was" war stories and abstracts that a civilian will not easily relate to or care about. The introductions to each chapter read more like West Point commencement addresses, and are about as interesting and as long. Overall, the book could be useful if more concise and relevant. However, since it's more likely to be read by Army officers rather than business people, it will still sell. For real business generalship, study Al Dunlap.
Should be required reading in every organization........1999-02-02
I cannot remember a book so well written, so full of business principles, and yet so easy to understand. I am a management consultant in the housing industry, and this book is required reading for every existing client, and I do not take on a new client until this book has been read by the management team. Sullivan and Harper, with pinpoint accuracy, identify the principles which make good companies great, and great companies, untouchable.

Never Judge A Book By It's Cover.......2000-06-14
This book is pretty on the inside and outside. Lots of colored photos. Plenty of photos of the shoes they have made and who they were made for. But no patterns to go with any of them except two. Very involved detailed process for making the solid shape to build your shoes upon. Brief explanations of various shoes over the centuries is nice, but don't expect to be able to design a shoe from many of the line drawings of shoes. The drawings are crude with no variations for each time period. They are not in color and mention no fabrics or popular colors for the time period. Nice glossary of tools used, shoe parts and techniques. There are 8 sources where you can purchased parts, etc. And last but not least there is a nice full page plug for the new upcoming book. I gave a three because the book is pretty, photos done nicely and process explanations were clear.
Great Book--More Shoe Photos, Please.......2000-01-30
I really loved this book. I have no experience in creating clothing for my 15½" Franklin Mint fashion dolls & the shoes that came with the dolls are a major disappointment. I hope to be able to rectify that soon with my husband's help in creating lasts & molds.
I gave the book 4 stars because, although the creation & design processes are detailed very thoroughly, there is a dearth of good photos of finished shoes. Many of the shoes that are shown tend to be somewhat hidden under the hem of a doll's outfit, the folds of artistically draped fabric, or the lid of a colorful candy box.
As suggestions for a second edition: If I could re-edit this book, I would add more finished shoes, add patterns for other popular fashion dolls (such as Franklin Mint vinyls,) & change the typeface font to something less fussy, with full margin justification.
Superb book with easy to follow instructions.......2000-01-29
I make and design clothes for the Madame Alexander doll Cissy and have always been frustrated with the scarcity/lack of selection/high price of shoes that I can buy for this doll. So, when I saw this book advertised in one of the many doll magazines I browse monthly, I knew I had to have it. The instructions are fairly easy to follow though sometimes the photographs showing the various steps are not located on the page facing the written instruction (the sole reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). The instructions for making a permanent last were very helpful. This book contains patterns for lasts & shoes for Cissy and Gene in particular, but the instructions and methods in this book could be applied to many dolls though I wouldn't recommend it for people wanting to make anything for Barbie. There are also instructions for making molds for heels (if you have a high-heeled doll like Cissy or Gene). Following these instructions, I successfully made my first pair of shoes, and, because I made them myself, I was able to customize them to the outfit I had made. A great book for making shoes for dolls for whom you cannot cheaply and easily buy decent shoes.

Book Description
An increasing body of literature concerns the economics of those highly appreciated qualities of life that are not easily provided by market exchange. Today these problems are visible as never before, for example environmental problems. But already at the dawn of industrial society the problem had been observed by Rousseau. His statements on the economy claim to take these problems into account with due importance. In this way his economic philosophy concerns a different domain of the economy from, for example, Adam Smith's work. Rousseau's philosophy attempts to consider phenomena later labeled information asymmetries and information costs, bargaining, collective good problems. Some of Rousseau's most puzzling social proposals (on theater, women, music, etc.) can be explained by his well-argued conviction that an optimal economy demands a high social morale, a communicative morale. He proposes an economic philosophy for the most important properties of richness - such as experiencing the unique, and being free although dependent on others (empowerment). It is for the adult capable of true deliberation, not for the trifle of the innocent child. He develops a concept of richness that is close to the Aristotelian capability-concept, later explored by Amartya Sen. Rousseau's economic philosophy has not been treated in a monograph before. The book should be rewarding to those interested in social theory, the history of social and economic thought, problems at the margins of market exchange, e.g. cultural economics, environmental economics, students of Rousseau and the thought of the 18th century, welfare economic theory in the direction of Arrow or Sen, and Poanyi's and others' theses about the transition from selfsufficiency to market.

Customer Reviews:
This book is a MUST HAVE .......2006-01-15
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone looking for inexpensive methods to get promotion and publicity for a restaurant or any type of eatery. Tiffany Lambert has loaded this book with a treasure trove of easy, cheap techniques to get more customers into your establishment.
The joy of this book is in its simplicity. All too often industry publications are too technical and hard to understand. Also, it seems to this reader that much of what is out there about promotion and publicity requires substantial amounts of time and money; both of which are in short supply in most restaurants.
If you are looking for inexpensive promotion and publicity constantly, without too much effort and cost, Lambert provides ideas for monthly, weekly or even daily promotions that will get and keep your business' name on your customer's lips.
The ideas and concepts presented in this book for special promotions for special interest groups, including children is priceless. It is special touches like these that play up the uniqueness of your business that make this book special.
Overall, this is a wonderful, concise guide that everyone interested in getting more customers at low cost should have. I totally recommend it to you. It is a MUST READ!
Worked for me!.......2002-12-19
I bought this guide because I needed some innovative ideas for public relations without spending a fortune. Lambert really made it an easy read and I saw more results using her ideas than I have my own the past 10 years. Buy the book! Then don't be afraid to try out even the most insane sounding measures she suggests.
Great Book.......2002-10-12
Great Book! I Found These step-by-step guides easy-to-read, and easy to understand! The books are packed with information. They reminded me of "cliff Notes" from my college days. The information is comprehensive without the fluff you find in so many of the more expensive books out there on the subject. The books are also packed with resources such as phone numbers and the web sites of the companies they are discussing - there is no "theory" just great information.

Book Description
Two important scheduling techniques for modern construction management—the precedence technique and the arrow technique—are developed and analyzed. The parallel treatment of these two applications presents a basis of theory and practice for the civil engineering student and the practicing project manager. Introduces the concept of the scheduling plan as a design process. Shows the steps for developing the list of activities as the basis for any networking technique. Gives computations for arrow and precedence diagrams. Covers practical techniques for making time-cost adjustments to early start schedules. Concludes with discussion of applications of techniques in the context of real-life projects.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best construction scheduling books in term of quantitative analysis.......2007-01-06
This book is one of the best construction scheduling books in term of quantitative analysis. The book does a good job on explaining the fundamental concepts of construction scheduling and further the concept to calculation part. Every concept is presented with examples and solutions, which are very useful. The contents of the book are:
1. Introduction. This chapter gives readers background in general about construction scheduling (such as resources, network, bar chart, and schedule).
2. Project Breakdown. This chapter is about deciding, preparing and organizing information (such as level of detail, activity data and constraints).
3. Basic Arrow Diagramming (or Activity On Arrow, AOA). This chapter is all about how to construct an arrow network (activities are represented by arrow shapes). If you don't plan to do manual calculation, he might want to skip this chapter. Moreover, commercial software these days does not use arrow diagram (AOA) anymore. However, redundant link, dummy activity (which is very tricky for AOA) and how/when to use dummy activity are well explained in this chapter.
4. Basic Precedence Diagram (or Activity On Node, AON). This chapter presents how to construct Precedence Diagram (AON) and show step-by-step how to eliminate redundant link.
5. Establish Activity Durations. This chapter is 5 pages long. However, I never read it. :P
6. Scheduling Computations for Arrow Networks (AOA) and 7. for Precedence Networks (AON). These chapters focus on the calculation of both types of the networks. The author shows how to use network diagrams (drawings) and how to use table (like spreadsheet but manually calculate) to calculate activity properties (such as early start date and floats). Formula for the calculation is well explained along with many examples. In both chapters, four types of floats and their formula are presented according to the type of the network (AOA and AON). In addition, the concept of using matrix (another kind of table) to update total float (TF) and free float (FF) is presented in the chapter 7. This matrix becomes handy when manual calculations of updating TF and FF are required. (You better get familiar with this matrix if you want to study one of the unlimited resource leveling concepts called Minimum Moment Method, explained later in chapter 11)
8. Communication the Schedule. This one is more like "How GUI of scheduling software (such as report format and bar chart) looks like 30 years ago". Surprisingly, nothing has changed much from today software. What a shame.
9. Project Control. This chapter discusses level of control, setting target scheduling, monitoring project, evaluating and forecasting project, control period, and updating project progress. This chapter shows you what can be done in term of project management and scheduling according to the knowledge discussed in previous 8 chapters. Moreover, it also guides readers to a new topic, Time-Cost Tradeoff.
10. Time-Cost Adjustments. This chapter presents the concept and the calculation of time-cost tradeoff analysis during pre-construction phase. The idea of varying crew sizes associated with their direct costs is discussed. A good example is used to demonstrate the idea and also the application of Fondahl's technique. Besides the concept of time-cost tradeoff which is well explained, I am not a big fan of Fondahl's technique because it is very tedious, error prone, and not guarantee an optimal solution. I suggest you to read the concept and try to use EXCEL to optimizing a time-cost tradeoff problem. Moreover, the author does not discuss cash flow analysis.
11. Resource Leveling. This is one of my favorite chapters since I am so into "resource leveling". This chapter discusses two different types of resource leveling which are Limited Resource Allocation and Unlimited Resource Leveling. For limited resource allocation, a traditional method (very simple and used in most commercial software) is explained. For unlimited resource leveling, the author uses an example to show how to level (reducing the fluctuation in resource required per day) unlimited resource by using Minimum Moment Method (MOM). Later, he furthers the leveling concept of single resource to multiple resources, and also demonstrates how to schedule activity so that the schedule will accommodate resource constraints. In brief, the author did a good job in this chapter compared to those in other scheduling books. Since this book was written in the early stage of construction engineering and management, the concept of leveling resources for multiple projects and the idea of leveling resource and still maximize resource learning curve are not discussed. In addition, later the author developed a new unlimited resource leveling called PACK which is more effective and less computational effort than MOM. Unfortunately, PACK method is not presented in the book. Last word about this chapter, MOM and PACK are most likely to outperform those resource leveling features some commercial software.
12. Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). PERT is a probabilistic scheduling method that calculates chance of finishing project within a particular period. This book as well as many other books probably say the same thing and show how the calculation of PERT. So, nothing is special. However, I would like tell you that these days we use simulation to get the same information from PERT with less pain. However, if you are old school, please read a method called Probabilistic Network Evaluation Technique (PNET). PERT only considers the longest path while PNET considers the longest path and other high independent paths with high variation in duration. Since variation exists in activity duration, the longest path may not always the critical path (hmm this sounds confusing).
13. Overlapping Network. From chapter 1 to 12, activity dependency is only described as finish-to-start relationship. This chapter introduces new types of activity constraint: start-to-start, start-to-finish, finish-to-finish. Formula and an example (which is enough) are used to explain the idea of overlapping network.
14. Selected Application. I never read this chapter since it is 30 years old.
The only major thing that is missing from this book is a scheduling concept of linear scheduling. Since this book was published when construction was not interested or not really appreciated the idea of maintaining resource utilization, eliminating resource idle time, the concept of scheduling linear project or repetitive project (such as high-rise buildings and highway projects) were not presented. Besides that, this book is an excellent book with cost of $60.
Ultimate Textbook for Construction Scheduling.......2003-02-16
This is one of the best, perhaps the best, construction scheduling books available in the market. The book contains all important contents in this issue. The book is very easy to understand, therefore ones without knowledge in scheduling can understand readily. Moreover, it contains several advanced topics in scheduling, including PERT, overlapping networks, and time-cost tradeoff. The author, Robert Harris, is a well-known pioneer in this field and has been a professor teaching scheduling classes at the University of Michigan for many decades. I strongly recommend this book for everyone who wants to own an excellent scheduling book.
