Good Information Lost To Bad Layout and Filler.......2007-06-22

My daughter is starting the process of looking at colleges, so I am in the process of obtaining information about various colleges. As a somewhat unusual teen, with unusual tastes, I am particularly looking for colleges that are unique or off beat.

While this book does have some good information, it was difficult to find due to the incredibly poor layout. It was more like reading a catalog than a book about schools.

In addition, while many kids may not know about these schools, many others may. My daughter has been contacted by almost all of the colleges in the book that would interest her. How? By filling out the ACT and SAT questionnaires and letting the colleges that matched her desires find her.

My recommendation would be to check this out of the library or the guidance office and see if it might help you. If so, go ahead and buy it.

Helpful advice / Unique Perspective.......2007-05-30

While Asher's advice and opinion may seem a bit heavy-handed or biased to some, he does provide a unique perspective about the college experience, from admissions all the way to post-graduation. The author went beyond the usual "K.Y.O.O.T." principle (Keep Your Options Open, Tiger) and described some pretty unique individual schools and programs. Most notably, he gives mention to the Robert E. Cook Honors College, a program about which people in some higher-level institutions are beginning to speak with respect and admiration. I would recommend this book to any college-bound student who may want to look beyond the usual horizons and try something different.

Cool Colleges...Cool Book.......2007-05-29

When I was looking into colleges, it would have been invaluable to have Cool Colleges to help me find the college that was right for me. Luckily, I stumbled upon one of the many colleges included in this book on a "college search road trip" with my parents. Asher does a great job describing colleges around the country that appeal to the "hyper-intelligent, self-directed, late blooming, and just plain different" students looking for a college to go to that will fit their unique personalities. This book paints a picture through interviews, lists, and essays of college life at each institution. You are sure to find a college in this book that is uniquely you.

RECHC: A cool college indeed.......2007-05-08

Asher describes the good, the bad and the ugly about each college reviewed in this book. He gives readers the "real deal" about colleges that are often overlooked, usually because they are not the big-name schools most people assume offer the best educations. One jewel: the Robert E. Cook Honors College at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The RECHC education is priceless; the book is affordable.

A must-read for all college-bound students.......2007-04-27

Unlike many pretentious books designed to assist in choosing a college, this one is both a great read as well as helpful. Asher presents a very down-to-earth perspective of many of the colleges, making them seem like real institutions of learning, rather than just a great name. And, there is something for every college-bound student in this book.

The formatting of this text is interesting and fun and the notes along the pages contain some great tips and ideas without being overly "busy." If you are serious about choosing a college that's a right fit for you, I would definitely recommend this book.

This book set me on fire when I first read it. Along with that other masterwork "Marketing Mistakes" this gem of a book is a great antidote to the hype and testosterone that marketing generates. A breath of common sense.

Another great book from Clancy et al. I'd recommend a full set of their books to anyone, not a dud among them. For more of a similar vein try:

Useless D'uh type points..........2005-11-23

Perhaps this book was good 10 years ago but not in 2005. I read the first few chapters and after several hours of going through the so-called "myths" I just had enough...
Most points they call "myths" are common knowledge to anyone in business or marketing fields (At least NOW).
Again, I am not sure how the situation was 10 years ago but now it is not worth the paper it is printed on.
Many better books are out there so don't waste your time.

A straight forward and useful marketing resource.......1999-09-16

As a business consultant, one of the most important things I can do for my clients is to help them overcome their "time honored traditions". Not only is it easy to read, but it's shocking in its ability to zero in on what's wrong with the marketing business. A must read! For those who want more detail, try reading their first collaborative effort, The Marketing Revolution. Bottom line--if you buy no other marketing book, buy one of these two books. They are Marketing Bibles with enormous power. Why? Because they lay out in excrutiating detail how marketeers have been relying on well-worn mths to conduct business--myths that have no basis in fact. Thus, is it any wonder that so many marketing efforts either don't work or when they do work can't be explained. I should know. Prior to reading these books, I fell for the same myths. What a disapointment.......2006-06-18

I just recieved this book this morning and what a waste of money. At first it started real good expaining the different mexican ingredients then I started looking at the recipes and couldn't believe it. This beginer book doesn't even have a recipe for SALSA!! I kept looking and there are many of my favorite mexican recipes missing. No salsa verde, no red salsa, no guacamoli, no ceviche, no mole sauces, or any stews. I go to a latin market in my town all the time and I love so much of the food and drinks. No recipe for any of the drinks like horchata, jicama?, and this fresca stawberry drink I had the other day. sooo good! None of the bakery recipes from the panderia. Heck, there wasn't even a basic burrito recipe. no discussion of the different type of mexican meat and their terminology for the cuts. The other reviewers mentioned that some recipes were missing but then still gave the book 4/5 stars. no way. zero stars if that was an option. Maybe the other recipes are good as I just got the book today, but a dummy book missing the basics- big problem. Also the back of the book mentions smoky chicken quesadillas and mex bread pudding. RECIPES NOT IN THE BOOK!!!!. I noticed amazon shows you other books that customers bought. The book "mexico one plate at a time" has excellent reviews. I'm considering buying that on instead. I suggest checking out. Also don't confuse mexican cooking essentials for dummies with mexican cooking for dummies. The later appears much better even though it's the same author. go figure

This book is gorgeous. But I was disappointed that the recipes weren't complete. Many of them tell you to use a certain type of salsa, but there are no salsa recipes in the book. I can think of at least three salsas, offhand, that are used in the recipes. Because I don't know salsas very well, I don't know what to use for what they call for in the recipe. I was hoping to learn how to make fresh and cooked salsas; because of this, I wouldn't recommend this book to my friends.

With respect to the other reviewer of this book, I've made both the bread pudding and the quesadillas - maybe there's a new edition of the book and these recipes were omitted? I've had my copy for a few years. Every recipe I've made from this book has been wonderful and has gotten rave reviews. My only complaint is that sometimes it's hard to find the ingredients. I live in a fairly small town in Indiana, and I have to make special trips whenever I make something from this book. It's worth it, though - everything's been fantastic! Fresh Mexican food is sooo good!

where's the salsa?.......2003-07-25

I guess I'm a dummy...I assumed that a Mexican ESSENTIALS cookbook would include salsa, guacamole, and mole recipes. The recipes they DO have sound wonderful, but frequent references are made to "Red Roasted Tomato Salsa" and "Fresh Salsa" and the flyleaf even promises I will learn how to make green tomatillo salsa and guacamole "in simple steps"; the back cover mentions Smoky Chicken Quesadillas and Mexican Bread Pudding. My dumb brain can't find those recipes anywhere in the book...and my mouth is ready to eat. Check your book before you buy.

Good review of options and futures trading. Each section is just 2-3 (short) pages, usually with an example or two, which makes the book very easy to pick up and read a little at a time. Since each section is so short, it also serves as a useful quick reference.

For more detailed reading on options/futures trading, I'd suggest finding another book. Use this mainly for quick reference, or as a refresher.

Property Tax Reform in Developing Countries provides a conceptual framework for property tax reform with the intention of making the most compelling argument possible to persuade the reader as to its validity. The text claims that a model for property tax reform in developing countries is derived from a theoretical distillation of empirical experience. The primary objective of this study is to establish, through logic, theory and observation: what constitutes a good property tax system, for whom, and under what conditions; why such a system works; and how inferior systems can be upgraded to approximate well-functioning systems. Property Tax Reform in Developing Countries develops its examination in three stages. First, a conceptual framework is presented for the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of property tax reform in developing countries. Second, attempts to reform property taxation in four developing countries are examined in detail. Finally, the results of the reform efforts described in the four case studies are evaluated and guidelines for reform are offered. The study concludes with specific recommendations for reforming property tax systems in developing countries, based on the conceptual framework and synthesizing lessons of the case studies.
