      Book Description

This book takes as its focus the current supervisory and regulatory framework for bank supervision in Thailand and the Thai authorities' efforts to modernise and restructure the Thai banking system. It examines the obstacles to this restructuring, which include the current economic difficulties in Thailand and the East Asia region as well as more fundamental historical, cultural and socio-economic factors that underpin Thai society. The book looks at the numerous banking statutes put in place in Thailand in the past sixty years, including legislation of the 1980s in response to problems involving fraud, insider dealing and solvency concerns. It examines how historically ambiguous structures of governmental responsibility and power, and a heavy emphasis on government discretion in regulation, have so far inhibited the effectiveness of this extensive body of legislation in developing a sound modern banking system. There follows an in-depth analysis of the 1997--1998 Thai Banking Crisis and ways in which lessons can be learned to avoid similar crises in future. The author argues for a greater degree of transparency in the regulatory process to bring it into line with internationally accepted standards, for increased supervisory implementation and enforcement by Thai governmental authorities, and for the ultimate depoliticisation of the bank regulatory and supervisory processes.

      Book Description

The book of Revelation contains passages of great beauty and comfort, as well as passages that strike the casual reader as bizarre, bewildering, and sometimes frightening. How are readers today to discern God's message in this peculiar part of the Bible? In this book Metzger presents solid scholarship in a nonacademic style. The book includes a list of resources for further study, a study guide for 8-13 sessions and can be used in personal or group study.

5 out of 5 stars Solid and readable.......2007-08-03

The first thing one must admit in reviewing one of Metzger's work is that next to no one is qualified to review one of Metzger's works. One of the most noted biblical scholars of a century, it's unlikely that any casual reader can take aim at him.

That said, the book is written for the casual reader, and in that sense is very accessible and unintimidating. There are even points at which, for the scholar or preacher, one might wish he would go into more detail concerning the first century context. The details of the eruption of Vesuvius and the threat of the Parthians are eye-opening, but Metzger gives them each only a passing notice. Nontheless, for an introduction to the Book of Revelation from the perspective of one who is not anticipating a literal, science-fiction fulfillment of the book in the future, this is a perfect read.

What is strongest about the book is that Metzger unpacks some of the most significant images of the text: the beast, the prostitute, the dragon and the lamb. He shows the first-century implications for the Roman Empire and lets us into the heart of one of Jesus' disciples, comforting a persecuted congregation. He interprets the symbols the way apocalyptic literature should be interpreted, as cosmic projections of present-day events. And all of this is done within the realm of Christian orthodoxy. In the end, it's a solid, reliable, insightful, brief book by a humble and talented scholar.

This book was very helpful to my understanding of the book of Revelations in the bible.

5 out of 5 stars Metzger Makes Sense!.......2007-02-07

Are you intimidated by the book of Revelation? Are you confused by the many views people hold about this amazing book? Looking for a book that will help you understand what John saw and what his readers would have understood in the late first-century? If you are, then this book is for you.

Metzger makes sense of this special book we call Revelation. From the beginning Metzger claims that this book has been mistreated by two extreme views: those who concentrate all of their study on this one book and those who are fearful to even attempt to read and interpret it. Many have carelessly ignored the literary genre in which it was written... that being apocalyptic literature.

This little book works much like a commentary. It is easy to read as it is primarily a guide to understanding the "Code" or symbols John uses in this type of literature. I highly recommend this book to those who are concerned with the historical-grammatical approach to studying and interpreting the Scriptures. It is a wonderful book to use in a small Bible study group. (You can also purchase a video and a leaders guide) I have used this in a small group. My class loved it!

It is no secret that Metzger's book is for the common man. Meaning: those who have not spent their entire lives at school, do not have knowledge of Greek, nor have had the opportunity to study theology in an educational institution. Metzger has the common man in mind. I have had the privilege to do these things... yet I find this book to be a great little resource when doing introductory study on the book of Revelation.

There are plenty of books on the market for those who want to further explore the first-century world of John to our modern day. This book is for those who want a historical approach to the book. It is plain and simple. And this is what Metzger wanted to accomplish. Get this book and learn of the great hope that Revelation presents to those who are called "the overcomers!"

I bought this book and read it in less than a week, if you have studied even a little bit about the Book of Revelation this is not the book for you. Everything I read I had already learned by just going to Sunday school. It is very basic, and I don't agree with some of the statements the author makes. This book didn't break any code at least for me.

Kusy and Essex draw from interviews with leaders in both the private and public sectors, as well as analyze high-profile critical errors made by leaders reported in the press, including those at Enron, Arthur Anderson, and the Catholic church. They further provide leaders with a step-by-step game plan for recovery, while also realistically recognizing that not all failure is recoverable.

I truly wonder whether you can grasp the above. No matter what, you might already have a feeling that the authors did try to repackage common ideas and concepts with sophisticated terms/jargons. I am not saying that the content is bad. I just believe that the authors could earn a better ROI of their time on content improvement. It's readable and at par with the sea of business related self improvement book. However, I am obliged to deduct one star for the arguably immoral promotional effort.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-02-27

I found "Breaking the Code of Silence" superbly written. Dr's Essex and Kusy reinforced 2 critical areas, at least in my mind, that businesses and their leaders always must be watchful for:

      1. Stick to what you do best, and what matches the organization's core. And be careful that new business ventures don't result in "misaligned momentum."
      2. Bungled hiring. It's a problem!! Most businesses do not spend enough time in interviewing and evaluating prospective hires, and they pay a very heavy price for that mistake.

The book is a good read. I'm sure other readers will pick up on their own particular experiences that resonate with the good insights of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great information and advice in an easy to read format........2006-02-19

"Breaking the Code of Silence" is packed full of good advice about how to lead before, during and and after a mistake or crisis. It should be required reading for all new supervisors and managers.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent HR resource.......2006-02-18

I found the book, Breaking the Code of Silence, extremely well written and an excellent practical guide to recognizing and responding effectively to management errors. An outstanding resource for HR staffers and all managers.

      4 out of 5 stars Communication awareness.......2006-02-16

"Breaking the Code..." helped me understand my role as a tool to progress in my organization, confirmed open and honest communication style and awareness of different behaviors must be recognized and worked. It's a good resource for Leaders, Managers and 1st line Supervisors. I also recommend "Fast Forward Leadership" by the same authors for more of a step by step guide on communications, performance and recognition.

                      Book Description

The book draws on the author's practical knowledge in the use of project management software and presents workable solutions to real day-to-day planning and scheduling problems. The book takes the user through the logical sequence of creating a schedule and statusing (updating or progressing) and contains practical advice on how to use the software and how to collect the data required to create and update your schedule. It is a balanced book, outlining how to use the core features of Microsoft Project 2002 to create and status both un-resourced and resourced schedules in a single project environment. It is aimed to take the user quickly to an intermediate skill level in the use of Microsoft Project 2002 by not becoming involved in the features that are not commonly used or needed for traditional project scheduling.

3 out of 5 stars Constructive but Disappointed.......2007-07-25

I am a fan of Paul Harris as he is the only person writing instructional text for Microsoft Project that comes to it with a construction industry perspective. It appears Microsoft Project has become the preferred solution for IT project managment, and has become enveloped in IT oriented literature. That said this book is exactly the same as the wire bound edition I purchased 3 years ago, with the exact same typos. There is no "Revised Text" nor are there any "updated workshops" from the original Microsoft Project 2003 edition, except that it now reduced from letter size 8.5 x 11 to 7 x 10 and paperback bound.

                              Book Description

At the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, three Scotsmen, Thomas Munro, John Malcolm, and Mountstuart Elphinstone, rose in the service of the East India Company to become respected and influential officials. Martha McLaren's book, British India and British Scotland, explores connections between their career-building strategies and their development of a principled and “improving” school of thought on Indian governance based on Scottish enlightenment conceptions of forms of government, religion, law, and political economy. Exploring the interwoven careers of the three men, McLaren presents a new perspective on their deliberate use of Indian language skills, Indian knowledge, and articulately written reports to gain promotion, revising the orthodox representation of their school of thought as largely pragmatic and conservative. This book provides a new argument about the way Munro, Malcolm, and Elphinstone pursued career objectives and, more important, revises the existing orthodoxy on what influences defined the character of their approach to Indian government. McLaren's work will further the understanding of British imperialism in South Asia in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It will be of specific interest to scholars engaged in the study of intellectual trends in both British colonial South Asia and Britain itself.

                                  Book Description

Companies invest in e-business and its supporting technology for their e-business initiatives. E-business applications such as supply chain management and customer relationship management improve transaction efficiency and scope economies as well as promoting new product and service offerings and close customer relationships. However, it is difficult for companies to capture these benefits as economic value or profits. Many companies launching e-businesses have not been successful at creating economic value. To justify continued expenditures, it may be necessary for IT managers to move beyond simply demonstrating the benefits of technology and objectively demonstrate the increase in economic value these technologies can produce. To create value from e-business, companies may have to develop appropriate strategies or unique value propositions to complement their e-business investments. This book presents a group of studies that yield significant new insights into the creation of e-business value.
