    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning.......2000-10-02

A thoroughly researched and extensively documented book which efficiently outlines 20 years of studies on adult learning. Effective adulte learning practices are explained in from six categories, voluntary engagement, respect among participants, collaboration and negaotiation of needs, relective praxis, critical appreciation of diversity, and student empowerment of self improvement. Aside from the institutional mode of learning, external authority, set objectives, set teaching roles, prescribed evaluation, adult learning seeks to empower self directed learners with critical thinking modes. This latter kind of learning is not without risk. The risks of dillusion, professional incompetence, and the perils of playing close to a kind of classroom therapy. Nonetheless, adult students bring a wealth of experience (good and bad), maturity, problem posing, problem solving, and task focus to adult learning. Finally, adult learning will invariably be restricted by institutional contexts, evalution criteria, and contextual business norms.

          Book Description

What went wrong and how can America become second to none in industrial productivity? This long awaited study by a team of top notch MIT scientists and economists - the MIT Commission on Industrial Productivity - takes a hard look at the recurring weaknesses of American industry that are threatening the country's standard of living and its position in the world economy. Made in America identifies what is best and worth replicating in American industrial practice and sets out five national priorities for regaining the productive edge.

Unlike other studies that prescribe macroeconomic cures, Made in America focuses on the reorganization and effective integration of human resources and new technologies within the firm as a principal driving force for long term growth in productivity.

Made in America examines the relationship between human resources and technological change in detail and singles out the most significant productivity weaknesses from the myriad causes that are typically cited. These include shorttime horizons and a preoccupation with the bottom line, outdated strategies that focus excessively on the domestic market, lack of cooperation within and among U.S. firms, neglect of human resources, technological failures in translating discoveries to products, and a mismatch between governmental actions and the needs of industry.

Looking ahead Made in America asserts that industrial performance would improve substantially simply by building on what is best in U.S. industry. It describes representative systems of production that can serve as models of best industrial practice for niche producers, price competitive specialized producers, and flexible mass producers.

Among the goals singled out as national priorities are the creation of a new economic citizenship that involves welleducated workers as active partners in the reproduction process, a new strategic focus on production, finding a better balance between cooperation and individualism, learning to live in an increasingly international economy, and making proper provision for the future both in terms of capital and human resources.

The findings and goals of Made in America are based on such measures of productivity performance as product quality, innovativeness, time to market, and service in eight manufacturing sectors - semiconductors, computers, and office equipment; automobiles; steel; consumer electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals; textiles; machine tools; and commercial aircraft. These measures revealed a large gap between the best and average U.S. practice.

1 out of 5 stars Every review must have a purpose.......2004-09-21

The book does not give you positions to go along with the telling you "THE PURPOSE". My chess teacher says, "it is good to say something general, but much better if you have a position as an example". Ha, Ha, in a way I am doing the same thing this book does!!!! But not really since this book itself is the "position".
If you want a lot of words, but not the positions or moves to go along with it, then this book is for you. I would rather have a book that uses real examples using real positins and moves than just lots of silly words. This author could do much, much, much better....

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-04-23

This slim volume, which draws life and business lessons from the game of chess, is one of the better self-help and self-improvement books you're likely to pick up. At only 115 pages, double-spaced, and a mere 20,000 words, the entire book is about the length of a chapter in most other books in its category. Author Bruce Pandolfini includes just enough chess lore to keep the book relevant to chess, but not so much as to overwhelm a chess-averse reader. He writes concisely, as a chess player plays, with a great deal of concentration and quick, quiet decisions expressed in single sentences. The book offers several fine aphorisms, the sort you will remember long after you have put it down. But it's not the kind of book you will want to put down. Fortunately, we are glad to note, it is small enough to fit into a purse or computer bag along with everything else you carry.

                    4 out of 5 stars SAY CHESS!.......2004-04-20

If you're looking for that perfect in-transit book to skim through, without straining your shoulders but working your grey matter, this slim treatise (115 pages, double spaced) makes for a pretty good fit.

Simply put, it draws some very thoughtful life and business lessons from Chess. Don't worry, it includes just enough chess material to keep the book relevant to the strategic game, but not so egregiously that it puts off people unfamiliar with chess (you know what a rook is though, right?)

The author writes almost like a chess player: with concentration and quick, quiet decisions expressed in single sentences. Which makes this book not only a pretty neat source of business thoughts, but also one of the better self-help and self-improvement books I've ever read.

You'll end up with a fistful of aphorisms if you really read, and while it may look a bit steep for its slim size, it's absolutely worth it. Highly recommended.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book.......2004-01-15

This is a brilliant book. ... It certainly has some useful things to say about business and strategic decision-making, but it is a chess book, written so clearly and universally that even a person focused solely on business and nothing else could still understand and benefit from it. It does not go into chess moves or combinations, although the few times he does talk about them he makes them come alive, such as: "Sometimes a move is right only because it's a little wrong," or "Some moves explain themselves." Pandolfini presents chess ideas so cogently that anyone can appreciate them and see their larger import: "To see what they see, sit where they sit." That is the beauty of what Pandolfini has done here. He has merged straight chess and general culture to appeal to everyone with a discriminating mind. Anyone can read it, even children. Anyone can gain from it, even people stuck in their office. But while the book reaches out to cultivated businesspeople, I see it as a chess book, one of the most stimulating I have encountered in many years.

Using a practical analytical approach, this timely work presents information and insights on the daily challenges brand managers face. Divided into two sections, the first emphasizes the need to understand customers and the current brand's assets before proceeding to refashion the brand's positioning and personality. The second half presents a detailed look at the practicalities of branding in today's tough market conditions along with an in-depth description and analysis of six major brands which have succeeded in creating strong identities. Includes hundreds of actual, up-to-the-minute examples.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Critical in Today's World.......2002-08-12

I found this book to be extremely useful with its steps and strategies on, as the title states, building brand identity. Upshaw really delivers, and his case histories only serve to reinforce his ideas. Given how critical branding is nowadays, this book really delivers. It's a little out of date, though, but Guerilla PR: Wired compensated for that, handling some of the brand identity strategy techniques in today's digital age.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, insightful, and entertaining........1999-01-28

Upshaw's text hits the mark in two ways. It surveys a very complex, demanding environment and reduces it to several clear concepts. And it provides a range of examples, timeless ones, I think, that illustrate how the concepts are applied in the real world. Building Brand Identity reaches at least two different audiences, professionals who want new tools to evaluate their own brand management and the layperson/newcomer audience seeking to learn the techniques involved in brand development. The reader can use Upshaw's ideas as a business manual or as a tool to better understand what he calls a hostile marketplace. And both types of reader will be entertained along the way.

4 out of 5 stars Good, though not up to date.......1998-12-27

This is definitely a good book about building a brand identity in a competitive marketplace. Two chapters report some real world examples, updated to the end of 1994 (Nike, Burger King, Saturn and others). Considering the changes in the past three years in the e-world, this title lacks some more updated and recent information on the Web.
