Reviewing Banks & Banks Mutlicultural 2007 Textbook.......2007-06-27
I was very impress with the material covered in this book. The authors did a thorough job from the historical perspectives of mutlicultural in this country. From the historical to current events that affect multiculture and especially multicultural education. I like the way the incorporated GT students as well as Special Ed students in this book. For these students are also found in the minority cultures and as they pointed out the are so overly represented in the Special Ed programs and not as much in the GT programs. As educators we have more work to do to make sure all students receive an equitable and quality education.
Good Perspective.......2006-04-29
We used this book in our doctoral level Urban Education class this semester. Very informative.
Really difficult to read, but it was a requirement!.......2003-07-05
Such a difficult book to read. It felt as if the authors had 2 chapters of concrete evidence and then took these 2 chapters and tried to expand them to fill an entire book. I felt as if I was having deja-vu throughout my entire reading of it. Some topics that I thought had been clarified again kept popping up and restasted the same idea in a couple pages worth.
The author's need to take a course in which they don't use 6 different words to say the same thing. I read about a paragraph of information and the author's didn't clarify the idea, they kept giving me the run-around. For example: " This race can be an exciting, joyful, enthusiastic, jolly, joyous, blithful, peppy, perky, blessful, and gleeful bunch. " These author's really let you know that they used a Thesaurus, but after a couple hundred pages of reading sentences or paragraphs full of synonyms it really gets annoying.
Excellent tool for a touchy topic.......2000-05-28
I've used this book teaching 10 classes in Multicultural Education for California State University at Hayward. It covers some "hot spots" like gender, special education, race, and social class. I've never had a student who expressed dislike for the book. It provokes dissent, emotions, and great discussions but maintains a well researched and professional style. I would recommend it to any professor of multicultural education and I eagerly await the 4th edition, coming this July!

Book Description
This new edition contextualizes Lareau's original ethnography in a discussion of the most pressing issues facing educators at the beginning of the new millennium.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe a 3.5.......2004-10-27
In "Home Advantage," Annette Lareau examines the question of who gets ahead in public schooling and what causes social reproduction. Specifically, she looks to connect the social institutions of the home, the school and the occupation to see how each affects the children at a young age.
To examine this question, she goes to two schools (Prescott and Colton are the aliases). Prescott consists of mainly upper-middle class families, while Colton consists of lower-class families. Lareau finds that teachers at both schools ask the same thing of parents however, the Prescott parents become much more actively involved (to the point of annoyance in some cases) than do Colton parents. She raises the question of why this is so.
She refers to one sociologist throughout the book (Pierre Bordieu) and uses his term of "cultural capital" quite frequently.
The issue appears to boil down (at least in Lareau's mind) to two main causes (however, the problem is too complex to be narrowed down that greatly). These causes are confidence and the "cultural captial" of each family. The Colton families usually were either high school graduates or drop outs and felt intimidated by the teachers expertise while the Prescott families felt that the teachers were the equals (if not, their superiors) and felt comfortable confronting teachers about problems they felt with their children. Besides this Lareau addresses cultural capital and the linkages between home, school and work in the book.
While this above is all fine, there were two major problems with the book. One was the glaring errors in the book (talking about typos and stuff here), this really didn't detract from the substance of the book but I (being nit-picky like I am) found this annoying and distracting. The mistakes included using "stronly" instead of "strongly", "they very greatly" instead of "they vary greatly" and misspelling Bordieu's name at one point (Bordiew). While I realize that this happens in every book, the errors seemed more obvious, evident and numerous in Home Advantage.
The other problem is more serious. Lareau uses her data to imply changes to the system to end social reproduction and help fix the class issue. However, she appears to have swallowed the achievement ideology of success herself. Instead of talking about the vast social and political changes that are very likely needed to change the system, Lareau implies that a few changes to the school system will fix everything and then the great meritocracy will occur. This seems rather naive in my opinion and I think that this is the greatest detractor from the whole book.

The second part focuses on production-inventory systems and supply chains. This part includes chapters on a multi-echelon logistics system, optimal control of a substitutable inventory system, structured assemble-to-order systems, the impact of advance demand information on various production-inventory control mechanisms, the quality of demand information as it impacts flexible contracts, the supply of information goods using spot and forward pricing strategies, modeling frameworks that connect material flows with financial information flows.
The book examines cutting-edge topics that have been invited and organized by the Editors from leading researchers in the field. Each chapter presentation has been carefully reviewed and crafted by the Editors and contributing authors. The volume is a fitting recognition of John Buzacott's lifetime contributions to this field.

This "crash course" in business-to-business marketing is an excellent introduction for the newcomer and a worthwhile refresher for the veteran. Barry Silverstein is convinced that the Internet will soon replace direct mail as the primary vehicle for business-to-business direct marketing. Silverstein doesn't promote spam, but discusses how the Internet has changed marketing and how principles of sound direct marketing can be applied to the Internet in fresh ways.
Silverstein presents dozens of techniques than can be applied to five major strategies, each invaluable in building business profitability. The first is a set of techniques for generating and qualifying leads online. Next, he demonstrates approaches to using Internet events as means to promote products and services. Then he discusses using the Internet's advantages in delivering instant-fulfillment service. The ins and outs of generating orders over the Net come next, followed by the means of using the Internet to build and solidify relationships with your customers. Silverstein backs up his points with excellent real-world examples and a variety of case studies. He closes his presentation with an action plan to help you put his techniques to work in your organization. A series of appendices guides you to additional resources. --Elizabeth Lewis

Customer Reviews:
Versatility of B2B Internet Marketing.......2000-07-03
This book starts with a very good refresher course in B2B direct marketing. Barry Silverstein then covers seven different B2B Internet direct marketing strategies for increasing profits in a luxury of details. The companion site is a good complement to the book for that purpose. Barry Silverstein is very good at generating ideas that both beginners and experienced marketers could use for building marketing programs. The author gives some ROI applications to illustrate his point. Unfortunately, Barry Silverstein does not give screenshots of good and bad direct marketing applications. To paraphrase Jakob Nielsen at the beginning of his last book, "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity", the reason to give those screenshots is not to criticize or praise specific sites, companies, designers or marketers. The screenshots are used to illustrate direct marketing techniques because it is difficult to understand abstract theory without concrete examples. Unlike Arthur Hughes in his last book, "Strategic Database Marketing", Barry Silverstein seems to limit his description of case studies to success stories. One of the main goals of a reference book is to help other marketers avoid making the same mistakes again and again. Despite those shortcomings, Business-to-Business Internet Marketing is currently the leading authority on the subject.
Comprehensive but Basic & Boring.......2000-06-17
A good book for beginners, but not for anyone with at least a few months of marketing experience. All chapters have good summaries and occasional case studies. I've been doing marketing for about 2 years and find some of the general strategies helpful. For example, he advises using call-to-action strategies, but doesn't go into details about the tricks of the implementation. Also, the first chapter on direct marketing is excellent in that it ties in well conceptually with internet marketing. Overall, I would say not worth your time if you're a professional, skim it if you've had some experience, and a good buy if you're an absolute beginner.
Outstanding book and terrific companion Web site.......2000-02-12
This is an outstanding book. It covers 7 specific b-to-b Internet marketing strategies in detail with plenty of real-world examples. It's one of the best books on the topic. The companion site is a real bonus - it has a "living table of contents" with links to every site mentioned in the book, plus an exhaustive resources section. Highly recommended!
Companion site - a true resource.......2000-02-10
The book was great to help me understand how to increase the effectiveness of internet marketing techniques, and the companion site was a hands-on resource! I was able to surf sites on topics ranging from Internet Advertising Networks and Placement to Web Portals and Search Engines. The companion site showed me best in class examples, as well as lead me to sites that will help me execute better Internet marketing programs. I recommend the companion site as a true portal to the best sites on the Web for Internet marketing professionals!
The Companion Web Site is Terrible.......2000-02-09
I noticed that several of the links in the book are no longer active. I went to the companion Web site hoping to get an update. Boy, was I disappointed! I found a little more than 25 links and nothing else! The companion web site was supposed to be a major selling point of the book, but it did NOT live up to its promise. Shame to the publisher.

Description:
In this paper, we consider the case of a distressed firm whose financial commitments have to be renegotiated with stakeholders (banks, trade creditors ...). At default time, rival projects (continuation, piecemeal liquidation, liquidation as a going concern ...) may be undertaken. In such a case, the most frequent way of making collective choices is to vote. Our attention focuses on the risk of not choosing the best project because of free riders: personal interests may block the issue in favor of the project associated to the highest value of the firm. At first, we consider a law-enforced procedure under which financial deviations from the absolute priority order (APO) are possible: each individual gain is slightly modified in order to obtain a non-strict majority in favor of the best project. This legal intervention can be implemented and considered as ''optimal'' if it respects four criteria: economic efficiency, financial neutrality, legal tolerability and democratic desirability. Under these conditions, any law-driven renegotiation process must defines financial transfers that underweight (respectively overweight) the sub-optimal gains (respectively losses) of the most influent voter. Moreover, the proportion of financial transfers granted to each stakeholder exactly reflects their relative influence power: in other words, financial deviations from APO can be interpreted as the price that any stakeholder has to pay (respectively receive) because of his marginal negative (respectively positive) impact on the collective decision. Then, these results serve as a guide to comment ex post efficiency of various bankruptcy procedures (US, French, English and German). Our approach may be interpreted as a first step in the design of an economically efficient procedure that should deal with both ex ante and ex post efficiencies.

Description:
This paper introduces an index of tax optimality that measures the distance of some current tax structure from the optimal tax structure in the presence of public goods. This index is defined on the [0,1] interval and measures the proportion of the optimal tax rates that will achieve the same welfare outcome as some arbitrarily given initial tax structure. We call this number the Tax Optimality Index. We also show how the basic methodology can be altered to derive a revenue equivalent uniform tax, which measures the tax burden implied by the public sector. A numerical example is used to illustrate the method developed, and extensions of the analysis to handle models with multiple households and nonlinear taxation structures are undertaken.
