5 out of 5 stars Reviewing the school leaders' practices.......2005-09-26

Ramsey, R.D. (2006). Lead, follow or get out of the way: How to be a more effective leader in today's schools (2nd. ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin.

We have a perceived crisis in education at present, in that it is harder to find high quality school leaders. As professional educators it is our collective role to mentor the next generation of school leaders and ensure that the students of the future get the best possible education. With that in mind I took a look at Bob Ramsey's book- "Lead, follow or get out of the way".

Being a principal is a complex job and I am sceptical of books in the management genre that simplify management to a list of rules and procedures. I was happy to find that Ramsey's book was far better than that. I was buoyed by the common-sense approach that the author has and it is accompanied by an economical and purposeful writing style. I was buoyed too by his observation that apart from authenticity and passion all of the leadership roles are learnable.

Clearly this book has an educative role for the neophyte school leader. It is comprehensively informative. The lists and checklists are very useful and provide a great starting point for discussions about specific aspects of school leadership. If I were mentoring a school leader I would find this a useful text.

A second role for the text is as a reflective tool for the experienced school leaders. None of us is perfect and it is rare to have a "significant other" in the near vicinity with whom reflection is possible. In a vicarious sense, Ramsey's book does this.

What the book does not do, in detail, is address the two key issues of schooling- pedagogic and curriculum leadership. Not withstanding this, the book is a very useful addition to any professional library. This book is my book of choice for our school leaders' reading group.

Corwin Press is to be thanked for producing good quality and topical books for educators, at a reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars Great easy read for Principals to be.......2005-09-01

This is a very useful and good book to read for educators seeking new admin positions. The fashion in which Ramsey lists things and pin points facts makes remembering and recalling his facts easy.As an educator with 15 years of teaching experience, I thought I'd explore the field of administration in education. I have taken several Principal's courses which are the first steps to getting into a Vice Principal's position, but I've never built the courage to apply for such a position. Several friends who have moved into such admin positions ask me why I don't make a move in that direction and I also ask myself why I'm not taking any steps in that direction. I never had a clear answer until I read this book by Ramsey. It really hit a nerve with me. In simple words it opened my eyes to the fact that at this point in time of my career I need to GET OUT OF THE WAY. The rest is yours to read. I highly reccomend this book to educators seeking positions in the admin areas.

          Description:
This paper examines the nature of the relationship between tourism and cultural heritage management in the established urban destination of Hong Kong. In the past, conflict theory has formed the basis of most of the studies of relationships between tourism and other sectors. However, a conflict paradigm may not be the most appropriate framework. Instead, the authors outline a continuum reflecting different levels of maturity in the relationship between these two sectors. Seven different possible relationships are identified, that are influenced by five mitigating conditions.

            Book Description

Tourism can revive local economies, preserve cultures, and even resurrect lost traditions. However, it can also result in conflicts with existing values, economic relations, social norms, and traditions, sometimes resulting in pervasive or violent resistance. This book examines the changing relationships between tourism and host cultures and explores how and why conflicts emerge. It presents a series of detailed case studies from many parts of the globe and highlights initiatives and practices where conflict can be replaced by consensus and effective management.

            Book Description

From time to time, most of us either adopt a "tourist" identity or are framed within another's experience of travel and voyeurism. Travellers' Tales investigates the future of travelling in a world whose boundaries are shifting and dissolving. The contributors bring together popular and critical discourse of travel to explore questions of identity and politics; history and narration; collecting, appropriating or representing other cultures; and tourism.
Travellers' Tales sways between the thrill of novel experiences and unexpected pleasures, and the alienation and loneliness of exile in strange and unfamiliar lands. The contributors review recent work on the discourses of tourism, travel and cultural politics; the effects of global interactions and local resistances, and the ways in which records, memorials, and signs have all been used to describe the experience of encoutering the "Other."

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars soap as a symbol of British imperialism.......2006-10-01

The book brings in a complex mixture of associations with the concept of identity and travel. Where here travel means not just a physical displacement from another crucial concept of home, but also a change in identity. Thus we see refugees and their experiences. Refugees from apartheid South Africa, who had to flee to other African countries, or to Britain.

You must check out a hilarious chapter on soap in the British Empire. I kid you not. There are reproductions of ads from the 1890s that depict soap, white naturally, as part of a civilising, imperialistic mission. McClintock gives an incisive analysis of that era, using soap and the surviving ads as eloquent testimonials to the not-very subliminal memes circulating amongst the British.

              Book Description

Angkor, Cambodia's only World Heritage Site, is enduring one of the most crucial, turbulent periods in its twelve hundred year history. Given Cambodia's need to restore its shattered social and physical infrastructures after decades of violent conflict, and with tourism to Angkor increasing by a staggering 10,000 per cent in just over a decade, the site has become an intense focal point of competing agendas. Angkor's immense historical importance, along with its global prestige, has led to an unprecedented influx of aid, with over twenty countries together donating millions of dollars for conservation and research. For the Royal Government however, Angkor has become a `cash-cow' of development.

Post-conflict Heritage, Postcolonial Tourism critically examines this situation and locates Angkor within the broader contexts of post-conflict reconstruction, nation building, and socio-economic rehabilitation. Based on two years of fieldwork, the book explores culture, development, the politics of space, andthe relationship between consumption, memory and identity to reveal the aspirations and tensions, anxieties and paradoxical agendas, which form around a heritage tourism landscape in a post-conflict, postcolonial society.

With the situation in Cambodia examined as a stark example of a phenomenon common to many countries attempting to recover after periods of war or political turmoil, Post-conflict Heritage, Postcolonial Tourism will be of particular interest to students and scholars working in the fields of Asian studies, tourism, heritage, development, and cultural and postcolonial studies.

I found this book to be filled with info for the new pilot who likes to practice new skills at their own pace. I found it to be like having your own instructor only on your time. It is most important to have help untill you solo..

1 out of 5 stars Poor Job Explaining Concepts of Flight.......2006-06-27

Not sure who would order this book. It seems too advanced for beginners, but not advanced enough to provide anything new to experienced flyers. The use of diagrams was an interesting feature though none a explained clearly enough to be of much releveance. It was a ok first attempt, but I think the author needs more poslish in presenting technical topics such as this.

3 out of 5 stars Scott Stoops' Book is Much Better.......2005-11-18

The web address for the superb book, "The Pilot's Guide to Mastering Radio Controlled Flight" is at [...]. The more I re-read it, the better I like it. Scott Stoops does a fabulous job of educating the r/c pilot about how to fly WELL, not just OKAY.

                    3 out of 5 stars Just Fair--and there's a much better book.......2005-10-24

This book is a series of articles from Model Airplane News and, as such, is somewhat disjointed at best. I agree with the previous reviewer that "Getting Started with Radio Control Airplanes" is a better book for the novice. However, I've recently discovered another (and much newer) book that's even better. It's called "Mastering Radio Controlled Flight" by Scott Stoops.

Stoops is a full-scale commercial pilot, a sport/stunt pilot, and a radio control pilot. His explanations are clear, in just the right sequence, and well illustrated throughout. There's a lot of "how to" for the basic, intermediate, and advanced radio control pilot. He even goes into some of the newer developments in electric-powered flight, much of which has changed radically in just the past 18 months with the introduction of lithium-polymer batteries.

I'm at the advanced trainer stage, just getting comfortable with aerobatics, and found this book invaluable.

I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't carry it. It's available through the publisher (Kiona Publishing).

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not 5 stars either.......2003-02-13

I don't usually write reviews, but I'm gonna have to go against the crowd on this one. I bought this book based on the 5 star reviews and was a little disappointed. Its not a bad book, but most of it is a collection of articles about different types of flying, like combat, sail planes, scales, etc. There's a little info on basic flying and some very limited info on some basic aerobatics, and that's it.

If you're getting started in R/C and looking for some good basic flight instruction, plus some other useful tips, I MUCH preferred "Getting Started in Radio Control Airplanes" by Yarrish. It has as much flight instruction as this one, plus some useful info on model building, covering, etc.

                      Book Description

This book provides detailed independent analyses of the successes and limitations of one of the most successful economic relationships in recent history: the Deutsche Mark and the Deutsche Bundesbank. With European economic and monetary union approaching, the lessons to be learnt from the German experience are now more important than ever. The Deutsche Mark has been one of the most stable currencies in the world for decades. The combination of a sound monetary structure and an anti-inflationary monetary policy have been the bedrock for unprecedented German economic success. This success, however, has not been unlimited or without risk. Fifty Years of the Deutsche Mark will give future European montary policy-makers the invaluable benefit of the German experience. The book combines chronological articles with others which follow the developments of a specific issue over the entire 50-year period. Issues covered include the central bank constitution, the central bank's relationship with fiscal policy-makers and with other banks, the role of the Bundesbank in European monetary integration, and the international significance of the Deutsche Mark. Individual accounts of the key monetary policy events in 1948 and 1990 as well as general articles on the `message' of German monetary policy and on academic deabte over German monetary policy round the book off. Sixteen eminent independent scholars were asked by the Bundesbank to contribute to this volume, and given full access to the Bank's records. The resulting articles provide comprehensive analysis of the successes and limitations of Europe's most powerful central bank. On June 20th, 1998, the Deutsche Mark will be 50 years old: this book will ensure that its legacy lives on.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Prospecting Ideas.......2006-06-21

As Weylman puts it "successful selling starts with successful prospecting." This book has remained a well-used resource for generating ideas for successful prospecting for my clients and for myself. With over 300 (well, 301) specific ideas for identifying, generating, cultivating and maintaining prospects, this book could be overwhelming and unapproachable. However, Weylman has organized these ideas in six articulate sections and 18 thoughtful strategies that allow the reader to understand the theory behind the ideas and thus shape them to best advantage in specific situations.

I highly recommend this book to people who need a solid "block and tackle" approach to filling up the sales pipeline.

                          Book Description

This volume addresses the fundamental linguistic question of how the perceived world is expressed through systems of nominal classification. Leading scholars review the whole spectrum of nominal classification, from gender systems through to numeral classifiers, providing cutting-edge theoretical interpretations and empirical case studies across a variety of languages. The volume presents new ideas about the problems of classification and clarifies the interface between anthropological and grammatical work. It will appeal to linguists, anthropologists and psychologists alike as well as specialists in languages as diverse as Australian, Amazonian, and Mayan.

                            Book Description

The study of object category development is a central concern in the field of cognitive science. Researchers investigating visual and auditory perception, cognition, language acquisition, semantics, neuroscience, and modeling have begun to tackle a number of different but centrally related questions concerning the representations and processes that underlie categorization and its development. This book covers a broad range of current research topics in category development. Its aim is to understand the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that underlie category formation and how they change in developmental time.

The chapters in this book are organized around three interrelated themes: (1) the fundamental process by which infants recognize and remember objects and their properties, (2) the contribution of language in selecting relevant features for object categorization, and (3) the higher-level cognitive processes that guide the formation of semantic systems. The volume is appropriate for researchers, educators, and advanced graduate students.

                                Book Description

Based on Estes' important Fitts Lectures, this volume details a set of psychological concepts and principles that offers a unified interpretation of a wide variety of memory, categorization, and decision-making phenomena. These phenomena are explained via two families of models established by the author: a storage-retrieval model and an adaptive network model. Estes considers whether the models are competing or complementary, offering cogent and instructive arguments for both perspectives. Estes' theory is then applied to two large-scale series of studies on category learning and recognition, providing an integrated understanding of seemingly disparate phenomena. This book is the culmination of the author's more than ten years of research in the field, and stands as a great achievement by one of this century's eminent psychologists. It will be indispensable to a wide variety of behavioral scientists, including mathematical and cognitive psychologists.

What is it about human nature that makes our species capable of thinking scientifically? Inspired by a debate between Noam Chomsky and Jean Piaget, Scott Atran traces the development of natural history from Aristotle to Darwin, and demonstrates how the science of plants and animals has emerged from the common conceptions of folkbiology. The author proceeds not only from the more traditional philosophical, historical or sociological perspectives, but from a point of view he considers more basic and necessary to all of these: that of cognition.

On one level, this work makes a general argument about the relationship between commonsense thinking and scientific thinking. . . . On another level, the one on which the more general argument is specifically illustrated, this work is an extremely well researched and presented history of 'systematics'--thescience of Western biological classification. This story, of course, has been told before, but never so compellingly and in aid of a provocative thesis that organizes the narrative. . . . Language and the process of representation may not be sufficiently problemized in this work. But in sum, a provocative aswell as a deeply investigated study.

From Ian Hacking - London Review of Books

Cognitive science lies close by Atran's side, guiding his claim that we have an innate capacity for sorting plants and animals. The cognitive revolution, as it is now called, took off from Noam Chomsky's thesis that there is a universal grammar, somehow innate, that makes it possible for infants to catch on to any language spoken round them almost without trying. This idea, once so radical, is now celebrated as fact and as a comprehensive model for the human mind. . . . Atran's thesis about a built-in cognitive skill for sorting the living beings fits nicely into this tradition. But you don't have to recite the cognitivist catechism to gain admission to his book. You can also think heis wrong-headed in his application of the cognitivist programme, and still immensely admire his work.

4 out of 5 stars Exceptional scholarship in the history and theory of science.......2001-07-06

The term "natural history" has a variety of meanings today. Most often it is used to distinguish the popular study of nature from its technical and experimental study, the latter being given the name "biology." But "natural history" has itself a technical sense, one that is still used, although not as widely as it has been in the past. Technical natural history is the study of the diversity and history of nature: the distribution of animals and plants through space and time, the course of evolution, and the history of the earth. The core of technical natural history is systematics, the study of the "kinds" of animals and plants, and it is the conceptual development of systematics that is the subject of this exceptional, scholarly work.

Atran approaches systematics as an anthropologist specializing in the study of folk classification -- the ways in which different cultures categorize the diversity of life. Against historians and philosophers who have claimed that common sense understandings of the world obstructed the growth of science, Atran argues that folk-taxonomic common sense was the framework within which the science of systematics developed. Further, it is only by trying to solve the problems posed by common sense that science gradually disengages itself from common sense and stands on its own.

After surveying the folk-taxonomic literature and the principles of cognitive anthropology, Atran turns to the often-misunderstood zoological works of Aristotle. Aristotle, Atran argues, did not use the methods of formal logic to classify unknowns, but rather to characterize more precisely the animal kinds already recognized by Greek vernacular culture. Unlike Aristotle, who had to deal only with a local fauna of limited diversity, the Renaissance herbalists of northern Europe at the beginning of the age of exploration were faced with a far greater diversity of natural forms, a diversity that became available for extended study as botanical gardens and herbaria were established. As a consequence, the herbalists differentiated the basic folk notion of a natural kind into two privileged ranks (genus and species), and accorded the genus special conceptual status as a fundamental unit of nature. As knowledge of natural diversity continued to increase, taxonomic ranks proliferated, and Atran argues that families and orders gradually came to be fundamental in the way that genera had been before. Emphasis on these higher-level structures led to the elaboration of comprehensive organizing principles for natural diversity, principles like the great chain of being stretching from monad to man.

Atran concludes his account with the rise of the evolutionary view of nature in the early 1800s. He does not address the deep transformations that are taking place within systematics today, transformations associated with the development of cladistic systematics. It is a testament to the value of Atran's perspective, however, that it was immediately apparent to me how the principal phenomenon he describes -- the gradual disengagement of science from common sense as a result of problems generated within the common sense framework -- is at the root of many contemporary systematic controversies, including the controversy over the rejection of taxonomic rank itself.

Atran has produced a work of substantial scholarship. Readers who are not familiar with any of the subjects covered in this book will find it slow going as the writing is dense in places, and specialists will wish to dispute certain technical points, but the wealth of information the book contains and the fresh perspectives it offers make it invaluable. Cognitive Foundations of Natural History will influence the conceptual and historical study of systematics for some time to come. Since antiquity, people have searched for a way to understand the colors we see-what they are, how many there are, and how they can be systematically identified and arranged in some kind of order. How to order colors is not merely a philosophical question, it also has many practical applications in art, design, and commerce. Our intense interest in color and its myriad practical applications have led people throughout history to develop many systems to characterize and order it. The number of color order systems developed throughout history is unknown but ranges in the hundreds. Many are no longer used, but continue to be of historical interest. Despite wrong turns and slow progress, our understanding of color and its order has improved steadily. Although full understanding continues to elude us, it seems clear that it will ultimately come from research in neurobiology, perception and consciousness. Color Ordered is a comprehensive, in-depth compendium of 165 systems, dating from antiquity to the present. In it, Rolf Kuehni and Andreas Schwarz present a history and categorization of color systems, describe each one using original figures and schematic drawings, and provide a broad review of the underlying theory. Included are a brief overview of color vision and a synthesis of the various systems. This volume is a unique and valuable resource for researchers in color vision, and visual perception, as well as for neuroscientists, art historians, artists, and designers.

"The book is readable, and could well prove valuable to just starting educational psychologists, neuropsychologists, and so on, since it provides a structured framework for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of educationally evident learning difficulties in children." --Valerie Muter in Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Discussing professional practice, subtypes of learning disabilities, and the dimensions of psychosocial functioning, the authors of this volume introduce a comprehensive, cohesive model of neuropsychological assessment and intervention that can be used for both children and adolescents. They also provide detailed case studies that exemplify the major subtypes of learning disabilities and illustrate the application of general principles for use in day-to-day practice. Clinical psychologists and others whose professional practice brings them into contact with children and adolescents who exhibit learning disabilities will find this volume superb in its scope, statement of the issues, and in its presentation of guidelines for helping this population.
