Method and Morals in Constitutional Economics: Essays in Honor of James M. Buchanan (Studies in Economic Ethics and Philosophy)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540419705 |
Book Description
This book contains a range of essays on topics in the emerging field of "constitutional political economy". This field of enquiry is strongly associated with the name of James M. Buchanan whose research program has been the point of departure for this field. The essays are a selection of those written by colleagues and researchers in the field to honor Buchanan on the occasion of his 80th birthday. They cover a wide range of topics but fall primarily into two sets: one set dealing with methodological aspects of the c.p.e. approach; the other dealing with specific applications in a variety of policy areas, ranging from "economic transformation" to monetary policy regimes to health care. One particular issue in the methodological area relates to the model of motivation used - and more especially, the role of "morality" in economic and political behavior. The five essays on this topic make up one of the sections of the book, and justify reference to the issue in the volume's title.

This is THE book for this very under-written and immensely critical topic of services marketing and an essential reading for the 60-80% of the workforce who are involved in the ever growing services sector.

Superb edition!.......2005-01-06
A 'precious' book.......2002-09-23
I have been through a couple of similar books in the past. But coming from Singapore, I have found most of the examples and case studies to be American or Euro-centric in nature, and not always readily applicable to the Asian context.
Not to say that non-Asians would not benefit for this book, for I have found the insights in these case studies applicable across culture and industries.
I highly recommend this. This is definitely one book I would keep within an arm's length for ready reference.
Finally, a textbook on Services Marketing in Asia!.......2002-08-16

Professional Judgment: A Reader in Clinical Decision Making
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521346967 |
Book Description
Recent debate in both Europe and North America has focussed on how clinicians make judgments and decisions, how these may be evaluated and how they could be improved. This volume provides students, teachers and practitioners with a comprehensive introduction to the main descriptive and prescriptive approaches to judgment and decision making in clinical medicine. The contributors, who include psychologists, economists, decision theorists, statisticians, lawyers and sociologists, as well as medical specialists, provide examples of recent empirical research and its applications, as well as outlining the relevant concepts and theories. Policy-capturing models, data-based aids, expert (‘knowledg-based’) systems and decision analysis are the main techniques introduced, with attention to both their methodological bases and practical evaluation. Also included in the collection are a series of papers which consider the economic, ethical and legal contexts of clinical activity and the education and wider socialization of clinicians. Issues surrounding the ‘cost-effective’ use of resources, the obtaining of ‘informed consent’ from patients and ethical behaviour under uncertainty are highlighted.

Knowledge and Strategy (Knowledge Reader)
Manufacturer: Butterworth-Heinemann ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0750670886 |
Book Description
This is the first knowledge book in the Resources for the Knowledge-Based Economy Readers' series to link the two hot topics of knowledge and strategy. The book centers around the concept of treating organizational knowledge as a valuable strategy asset. Knowledge strategy is a natural extension of the historical development of business strategy in general. The book includes seminal articles on the subject as well as an introduction written by Michael Zack.Customer Reviews:
Practical and informative.......2002-06-19
Part I of the book covers resource-based strategies and how they support competitive advantage, with knowledge and intellectual capital as the primary resource. Part II extends the business imperatives by providing a resource-based view of knowledge itself and how it relates to organizational strategy. In Part III a compelling case is developed with a central theme that knowledge is a strategic asset. While few would dispute this fact, putting it into practice and incorporating this into organizational culture is the tricky part. The three chapters in this part of the book provide the basis for a value proposition to begin assimilating this into the corporate culture. Part IV is where it all comes together with four chapters that cover issues that will be encountered when integrating knowledge and strategy.
Chapters that I thought were particularly valuable or on the mark include: Knowledge and Competence as Strategic Assets (Chapter 9), Strategic Analysis of Intangible Resources (Chapter 10), and Leveraging Intellect (Chapter 15). Each of these were exceptionally well written and highlighted and synthesized the key theme of the book. If you're interested in linking knowledge to strategy for competitive advantage this book provides clarity and is full of ideas. I also recommend "CyberRegs: A Business Guide to Web Property, Privacy, and Patents" by Bill Zoellick, especially Part II (Patents), which shows how to further leverage intellectual capital.
