Customer Reviews:
A Toolkit for Teams.......2001-08-25
In today's increasingly complex business environment, "speed" has become the mantra of successful organizations. The ability to learn and adapt to changing conditions more quickly than the competition is what separates the winners from the losers. In their book, Checkered Flag Teams, Renee Merchant and Jo Ellen Roe capture the centrality of speed in the modern business environment by creatively building their presentation of team development around an auto racing theme. The auto racing theme also provides an interesting juxtaposition by demonstrating the importance of teamwork in a sport that to an outsider seems more of an individual endeavor.
The primary strength of the book is that it is based on a theoretically eloquent and easy-to-understand model of teamwork. I have never been overly fond of Tuckman's model of team development because it focuses too heavily on the social dynamics of teams while ignoring the crucial element of the tasks that the team was created to accomplish. The authors' model of team development (presented on page 31), however, corrects this weakness by providing a convincing case for the need to balance task and process issues in team development.
The more obvious strength of the book is that it provides a number of "tools" for developing effective teams. These team activities are indexed early in the book, so you can quickly locate just the activity that you need. The instructions and rationale for each activity are precise and easy to follow, so that even novice team leaders should be able to employ them successfully. In addition, most of the team activities are fairly brief and to the point which makes them perfect for teams on the move.
I especially recommend the book for teams that are just getting started, as it provides an excellent toolkit for getting teams off to good start. Though it also provides a nice reference for team leaders in any field who are working to develop their team facilitation skills or are just looking for some creative new team building activities.
Excellent Use of NASCAR Metaphor and Team Exercises.......2001-03-23
Seldom do I see a business book that captures one compelling metaphor and carries it out over an entire book like this one did. The writing is good, detailed, and clear. Further, the book is filled with valuable team-building exercises that will improve communications and effectiveness, as well as work satisfication. If you work with manufacturing teams in the automotive industry, this book will be extremely valuable to you. In fact, it may function at beyond a five star level. On the other hand, if you work in high technology away from the NASCAR circuit and do most of your communicating in a virtual team by e-mail and shareware, this book may not seem very relevant.
The book's main weaknesses are part of its strengths. If you do not follow NASCAR, a lot of the metaphor will be lost on you. For that reason, I think the book would have worked better with more metaphors or one that was more universal than this one. The exercises are very good for bringing out differences and welding them together into an effective team, but they seemed very dependent on having a facilitator. I suspect that this facilitator would normally have to be from outside the team, for best results. Many organizations would not have the resources to draw on facilitators this much. Also, for short-term ad hoc teams, the exercises here could be overkill. There was not enough guidance about what you could cut back on, in those circumstances.
Also, I have seen a lot of team-building exercises blow up due to inexperienced facilitators. This book would not provide enough guidance to the neophyte facilitator on what to do, should a heated disagreement occur.
I graded the book down one star for its facilitator-intensive approach.
After you have finished enjoying new ways to improve team effectiveness, I suggest that you think about where people should work in teams but do not in your organization. What are the costs of this approach? What would have to be done to switch over to teams in those areas? Focusing on those opportunities may be an even bigger payoff than making your existing teams more effective.
May you enjoy the race, as your team is able to move faster, more safely, and more efficiently!
More than thirty tools and activities.......2001-03-03
Checkered Flag Teams: Driving Your Workplace Into The Winner's Circle employs an automotive racing template to provide the corporate manager an up-beat approach to having a strong business team utilizing a "Fast Start Teamwork" process. Authors Renee Merchant and Jo Ellen Roe provide the reader with more than thirty tools and activities that anyone who drives a car can relate to. Included is a completely new communications style inventory, "CARStyles", inspired by the type of vehicle team members prefer to drive. Checkered Flag Teams is highly recommended reading for corporate policy makers, human resource directors, managers, supervisors, team members, consultants, and aspiring entrepreneurs.
Co-author Teamwork.......2000-12-07
The FAST teamwork process in this book really works! Jo Ellen and I teamed with each other, our artist, publisher, typesetter, and many others to complete our project. Our families helped also. We started with our shared vision, and our individual goals were achieved as a result!
Team building is the key to success........2000-12-02
This book is a good tool for anyone in a supervisory position. It can be used by the entrepreneur as a blueprint to help build a team that shares and supports the goals of the business. Civic organizations can use the methods and tools provided in the book to make their volunteer committees more cohesive and productive in achieving community goals and vision. The book is written in a way that is easy to understand with principles easily applied to family, church, community, and of course the work place.

Book Description
This is the book that you want every company employee, especially the executive leaders and middle management, to read before you start your Lean/Six Sigma deployment. The authors have done an excellent job of explaining in a non-technical manner the Six Sigma problem solving methodology MAIC (Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) and why it is critical that it be linked to the 5S's of Lean Enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
A Weak Six Sigma Primer.......2003-04-10
I have read several books on Six Sigma and found this one to be extremely weak on content and heavy on the current Buzz Words! As a basic book on Six Sigma you better have a Six Sigma dictionary by your bedside to let you know what the authors are trying to tell the reader. If you are familiar with Six Sigma then you don't need to read the book. The tale is simply written and a easy read but makes the process of Six Sigma "a walk in the factory". I believe the story doesn't give anybody associated with any improvement processes any real insight and the book may be best described as a fairy tale at best. Any of the well known texts from Pete Pande and team do a much better job in providing the basics of process improvement.
Leaning Into Six Sigma.......2002-11-07
The book has a unique way of integrating the principles of Lean and Six Sigma. The practical concepts of eliminating waste and improving efficiency have been illustrated in simple terms. The length and style of the book have been structured for easy reading.
The reader doesn't have to have a specific background other than being open to learning the best principles of business. The concepts can also be applied to a transactional type of environment based on the principles taught in the book.
The examples provided are relatable and provide a channel for easy comprehension.
A publication project well done!
Heavy on Attitude -- light on Substance.......2002-09-20
"Leaning into Six Sigma" provides a few hours of entertaining reading, but only brushes the surface of Six Sigma. Written in the tradition of "The Goal" by Eliyahu Goldratt, "Leaning into Six Sigma" doesn't live up that book's success at explaining complex business/operations concepts even while telling a compelling story. While Sam Micawh, the protagonist, certainly can't be faulted for being boring, the brazen attitude bestowed upon her by the authors, and the patronizing tone with which the client company's employees are addressed, only serve to reinforce the negative stereotype of "the arrogant consultant." This fault makes me hesitant to recommend "Leaning into Six Sigma" ...
Easy to Read.......2002-09-18
This book is written in a style that provides the reader with an easy to understand look at the power of combining the tools of Lean and Six Sigma. Written for a long flight or a quick homework assignment it provides entertainment while allowing some important concepts to be learned effortlessly.
A nice roadmap for integrating Lean & Six Sigma. A must read.......2002-06-28
The authors Mills, Wheat and Carnell tell an engaging story.... a story of a consultant helping a client achieve operational breakthrough in phases, what in the end turns out to be a natural deployment of Lean & Six Sigma for the organization. The narrative is lucid, interesting, insightful, well organized and "lean" (only 100 pages, I finished it in one night). A no-frills, no-nonsense book that also delves into the issues & constraints that a consultant may face, and shows how to overcome them.
A highly recommended read for teams starting the journey towards Six Sigma and Lean implementation, for champions & leaders in those areas, CEOs of companies looking to deploy SS and Lean and all those Six-Sigma lovers that are out there and harboring a secret desire to get into consulting some day.

Customer Reviews:
She doesn't disapoint.......2007-08-31
Eleanor Burns has been around a long time and knows her way around a quilt pattern. Her instructions are suitable for beginners and the designs are beautiful enough to interest even the most experienced quilter. She continues with her traditional approach and classic patterns, but with some design twists.
Easy to use and filled with some history too........1997-09-29
Stars Across America has beautiful quilt patterns with a star representing famous women in our American history. Along with the easy to follow directions for the quilt is a written history of the woman highlighted with their own star design. Each quilt has it's own unique border also. I made the Eleanor Roosevelt Star quilt and enjoyed the straight forward directions that even a beginning quilter such as myself could make with few mistakes. If you like stars, quilting, and some interesting historical information this is a good book

Book Description
Tracing a host of important and exciting topics relating to consumption, this book describes and analyzes the rise of mass fashion dress, changing fashions in clothing, the transcultural significance of tulip consumption, the rise of print advertising, the use of food as a marker of elite status, and the emergence of photographs as a consumer commodity. The emphasis on consumption rather than production offers new perspectives on the Ottoman and Middle East past, and by extension that of East and Southeast Asia as well as Africa. Its findings also invite comparisons with those in U.S. and European consumption history. Also included are chapters that offer guidance in the use of archival sources for research in consumption history and a methodological overview of the utility of consumption studies for Ottoman and Middle East history.

Customer Reviews:
Talks the talk and walks the walk.......2007-03-15
As a seasoned sales professional, and one who is required to deliver sales presentations in extremely competitive environments, I can say simply that Sjodin nails every point of what it takes to get deals done with this easy to read and use book. I read the first version, and with the updates and added elevator speech chapter in the 2nd edition, I think this book was taken to a higher level: how many times are we caught off guard asking for a clear, concise rendition of what we have to offer, and then close the deal or at least get a meeting? It happens all the time, and this book gives you the tools to do it.
Too many times we fall into the trap of creating a boring presentation without sizzle AND substance, and our presentations get categorized as fluff. This book encapsulates everything we should think about when recognizing who our audience is and how to make an impact and be remembered.
I've seen Sjodin speak a few times, and if you see her speak then you'll realize she is a true saleswoman with grit and she knows her stuff. Many times in just general life interaction I've drawn upon her knowledge and expertise to set myself apart...and it works!
Kudos to the book and Sjodin; if you're serious about selling, this book has nuggets that will get you ahead.
Brilliant Sales Stimulation!.......2006-05-10
From reading New Sales Speak, I learned the importance of focusing on the "how" (delivery) not just the "what" (product). Enthusiasm and expertise shine though on every page as the author teaches invaluable tools to develop dynamic sales presentation skills. I became aware of the limitless potential within an individual to fulfill their desires and learned how to attune those desires through effective communication, courtesy, and creativity. After applying the sales presentation skills taught in New Sales Speak to my next listing presentation, I walked away with 3 things... a signed contract, a satisfied client, and a smile.
and anyone with a paintbrush can be a painter..........2006-04-30
Some people believe salesmen are born, not made. Sjodin, a public speaking and sales techniques consultant, insists anyone can become an effective seller by polishing his speaking skills and learning to sell himself and his ideas to business partners, investors, employers and supervisors.
How insulting to people that earn their living in sales...If you follow her simple thought, anyone with a paint brush can become a master painter and if you have a wrench and screwdriver you can get a job as a mechanic.
You either have what it takes or you don't!
Her claim that anyone can become an effective seller by polishing his speaking skills and learning to sell himself and his ideas to business partners, investors, employers and supervisors is ridiculous! She probably makes more money selling books with great catch titles...
Definitely applies to 90% of all sales people.......2002-04-12
Most sales people are not getting the job done. Period. They move around from company to company, making the same mistakes, and blaming their poor numbers on the product, their employer, the economy, or the price of tea in China.
While this book will not surprise top performers with something completely new, these folks may glean some value out of the distinction between an informational presentation and a persuasive presentation.
I could almost guarantee if all sales managers gave this book to the lower 75-90% of their sales teams, and made it a requirement to use the simple outlines in the book, their numbers would improve.... Anyone who cannot use the outlines to build compelling presentations should not be in the sales arena.
"Lite" Treatment for Beginners Likely to Disappoint Pros.......2002-02-24
This book, like so many others in the field of selling techniques, is probably useful for people new to selling but disappointing to those with more than a few years of experience. Ms. Sjodin's writing is competent, engaging and easy to read. She illustrates her points with pertinent anecdotes that make the book engaging to read, but the content is definitely "lite," meaning both general and thin on substance. Although she has targeted her book for sales professionals, it may be less useful to sales reps than the many more more substantial books on public speaking and the principles of persuasion written for a broader audience. The points Ms. Sjodin makes about sales presentations are no different from tips presented in any low-level high-school or college speech class.
Importantly for new sales people, Ms. Sjodin makes only passing reference to the critically important differences between complex sales that require many presentations over a long period of time and simpler sales that are likely to be closed after a single presentation.
The book is another volume in a growing library of thinly veiled self-promotion vehicles that provide contact information on the back page in case you may want to hire the author as a consultant.
As a 15-year sales professional who has been closing multi-million dollar software deals for years, I read almost anything about selling techniques in the belief that even a nearly useless book can easily justify its cover price if it provides a single good idea. Even so, I wish I had not spent the money on this book.

This is your ultimate guide to understanding the twisted vocabulary of your native New Yorker. If you are a New Yorker it will make you proud. It is an essential guide for New Yorkers to understand themselves and a necessary survival guide for tourists. It is important to understand that when a New Yorker says, "Good mawnin'. Howawya?", he is being friendly. You'll also find lotsa Catlicks in St. Patricks Cathedral. The illustrations by Frank Marciuliano are hysterical. In fact, they are essential in understanding some of the words. A must have! `How to Speak New Yorkese' will show you that `the only way ta make it through a day in New Yawk is with a sensa yuma'.
