BRINGING INTUITION TO WORK is a terrific introduction to a subject I knew little about. I had no idea intuition could be developed into some level of proficiency.

Author Gina Giacomini is one of those great teachers who actually wants you to learn her subject; and she really is effective. You will learn intuition even if you are the darnedest rationalist who ever lived. If you are not a "darnedest rationalist", but can take a shot at learning something that seems unusual at first but might be quite useful in daily life, then read this book.

Everyone has a level of competency in the mechanics of daily life. But perhaps a little intuition will find ways around barriers, or even missing information. Is now a good time to ask for a raise? What is bothering that client? Should I accept this new job offer? Is this person being honest with me? How do I set my goals for the day, for life--besides just running over everybody?

I learned an intuitive yes/no technique taught in the book that gets me out of little jams every day.

Over the years, I had heard some of the minds of the 20th century used intuition: Einstein, Edison and my favorite intuitionist, Nichola Tessla (just a single idea of his was "stolen" to become the foundation for Westinghouse). And Mozart wrote that he sees a composition in his mind and then writes down the notes.

What I mean with all this is that even if you are a biochemist studying the hair on the back of a virus, or an administrator, secretary or salesperson, or the President, this book will help and it will be fun to implement in life. If you had no idea of life beyond the mechanics, you will have a different impression after reading this book. That could be life changing, actually.

Having been a confirmed rationalist most of my life, with a little intuition I have become a bit more civilized and approachable, and perhaps a little more aware of and willing to understand people around me at work and at home.

Since government can use manifold policy instruments at various levels, which influence various social groups, the evaluation of the efficiency of income redistribution is not straight forward. The study in hand contributes to the literature by first applying a multimarket framework to recent theoretical developments in transfer efficiency analysis. A three-stage vertically-structured model including the bread grains market as well as agricultural input industries and the food processing industry is developed and econometrically estimated. This model and standard welfare measures are used to judge the Austrian agricultural policy. It is revealed that in addition to farmers, downstream and upstream industries benefit considerably from agricultural policy. Using nonlinear optimization procedures, it is shown that the applied policy is not Pareto efficient. Applying an optimal policy instead of the current one could Pareto improve the social state by 1.7 billion Austrian Shilling.

This study analyzes poor relief in preindustrial Europe from 1800 to 1850, as a survival strategy of the poor and as a control strategy of the elites. It deals with poverty and the problems of the poor, but also with wealth and the concerns of the elites and of the middle classes. A simple model of the poor relief is presented, based on insights derived from history, sociology and welfare economics. It is tested against the historical records of Amsterdam from 1800 to 1850. The study brings out some of the perennial problems of social policy, past and present, as well as some aspects of Old Regime charity, now vanished.

I am teaching IMC for the first time at the college level. I've found that my students find this book confusing and a bit dated at times. I have to agree with them. I do enjoy the structure of the book. This book will help keep you (or you students) organized, and it will give you the tools necessary to write an IMC plan.

A total disappointment.......2006-02-01

I'm a doctoral student in marketing from Sweden involved with teaching marketing communication to bachelor level students. I've been looking for a book on IMC aimed at students on an intermediate level. I must confess that my search so far have been marked by increasing frustration. On the one hand there are excellent "street wise" books written by practitioners for practitioners and on the other you have in-depth scholarly treatments of communication and its influence on culture and society that are steeped in theory and generously sprinkled with references. The problem is to find literature that actually use theory to guide students into practice.

Sadly this book is no exception. The earlier reviews suggest that this book would actually serve as the missing link and the title, referring to things like innovation and creativity, adds to the expectation. But it's neither the personal experiences of a working professional nor an academic study with its carefully constructed arguments from theory and data. This book is nothing but a collection of checklists, bullet points and an occasional flow chart. There are no case studies, no theories, no references whatsoever. The author seems to have spent an evening cutting and pasting from Kotler, organising the result into a flowchart (Doc Ogden's flow chart, mind you...) and then smacking the overall label of Integrated Marketing Communication on it all. There's no sign of any integration anywhere in the book and elements out of any entry level textbook are simply stacked one on top of another.

The final chapter claims to "bring it all together" but it's just six puny pages on evaluation. And speaking of pages, every chapter ends with a number of empty pages with one or two headlines where the reader has graciously been provided with space to express his or hers own thoughts on the subject. In all there are over EIGHTY empty pages out of a total of 185 (I stopped counting). Adding to the hilariousness is the chapter on "cyber marketing" where the Internet shares the meagre page space with tactics on creating a cd-rom, e-mail marketing, EDI and subscribing to database services. Online communities, banner advertising, online auctions and search engines did exist in 1998..!

To sum it up, I guess I'll have to keep looking. It's an utterly miserable book that borders on the comical.

This textbook has a counterpart INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX, also published by West's Federal Taxation that is used extensively by business schools as well as accounting classes covering all the aspects of taxation.

The book is written in an easy to understand manner, which follows the most important codes that are used in tax today. The only drawback of these books are the fact that since the tax codes are constantly changing, the books are updated about every year.

Diefenbaker’s victory promised a long and sunny Conservative era. It was not to be: instead Dief gave the country a decade of continuous convulsion, marked by his government’s defeat in 1963 and his own forced departure from the leadership in 1967, a very public drama that divided his party and riveted the nation. When Diefenbaker died in 1979, he was given a state funeral modeled - at his own direction - on those of Churchill and Kennedy. It culminated in a transcontinental train journey and burial on the bluffs overlooking Saskatoon, alongside the archive that houses his papers - the only presidential-style library built for a Canadian prime minister.

Canadians embraced the image of Dief as a morally triumphant underdog, even as they were repelled by his outrageous excesses. He revived a moribund party and gave the country a fresh sense of purpose but he was no match for the dilemmas of the Cold War of Quebec nationalism, or the subtleties of the country’s relations with the United States.

This compelling biography, illuminating both legend and man and the nation he helped shape, was among the most highly praised books of the year.

Dumping on Dief--Again.......2002-09-28

This book's virtues are obvious. It is a very thorough, well-researched scholarly monograph covering all aspects of the public and private lives of the former Conservative prime minister of Canada. It is factually reliable and stylistically readable, if a touch dull.

But it is so thoroughly, comprehensively, persistently hostile towards its subject that it cannot be considered balanced or fair. It probably contains the truth (and nothing but the truth) about Diefenbaker, but it doesn't contain the WHOLE truth about him. The author is too obviously grinding an axe; his antipathy seems almost personal at times.

The cover is a clue to the contents, since it has a demonic close-up of a glowering Diefenbaker. Basically, the author thinks that the former PM did nothing right, apart from give South Africa a hard time on occasion. According to the author, everything Dief touched went wrong. His account of Diefenbaker's relations with John F. Kennedy are particularly disappointing. Absolutely nothing is granted to the PM's position while the President emerges as the very epitome of cool-headed reasonableness. (We know otherwise now.)

In other words, this is just a long, dull but dependably scholarly version of Peter Newman's anti-Diefenbaker polemics from the 1960s. It is as though the author wanted to make Newman's caricature of Diefenbaker respectable. Measured against that very low ambition, this book must be judged a success. Too bad the author didn't aim higher and produce a balanced picture of Diefenbaker warts and all, rather than just all wart.

A great biography of a towering figure of Canadian history.........1998-12-08

This text appeared as I was attending graduate school in Toronto, Ontario. I ended up writing my thesis on a specific part of the Diefenbaker governments and this book is the reason why. (I'd also like to say that I wrote Smith about some of my research and he was very cooperative and professional!) Wonderfully researched and well written, you'll learn quite a bit about Dief the Chief and US-Canadian relations during the dangerous years from the late 50s to early 1960s; but you'll also learn more about the Canadian experience.

This book is simply must for anyone hoping to understand Canadian politics and culture.

The Definitive Dief!.......1998-08-04

This book has all you'll ever need to know about Canada's 13th PM. It is thoroughly (almost excessively!) researched, and covers the Chief's life from start to finish. At no point did I find myself thinking, "gee, I wish Smith could have provided us with more details or factual information". No book has gone this far in providing us with the definitive Dief!
