and now.....Supercharged Political Correctness!.......2007-09-11

Very early, we are given the author's new rules: references to homosexuality must subsequently capitalize Gay and Lesbian; Native Americans are known as First Nation's Peoples; (there's no comment regarding appropriate contemporary nomenclature for Australian aboriginals or Canadian eskimoes up there beyond the Northwest Territories) and while it may be assumed that African-American references remain appropriate, no dictates are offered regarding African visitors to North America. Spanish speakers and Latin students may wish to continue the use of "neg" prefixed words for black on their own, but don't expect these authors to grant such permission.

The book seems to be aimed at white (U.S.) southern males emerging from Jim Crow Alabama in the 1950s---and gives no credit to today's hard-working educational professionals, throughout the world, of all faiths, colors, and origins who diligently seek to simultaneously socialize and educate youths of all kinds, types, abilities and persuasions.

The book seems strangely unique to North America---vacuous, narrow and not at all what one seeks or expects in an educationally-aimed text. The absence of observation, research and discussion of how to educationally address diversity concerns outside of North America.....that is, the reporting of the exemplary approaches and the worst ones from the rest of the world, is an egregious oversight.

A book on cultural concerns, at this time, might best be aimed at helping us to weigh the responsibilities of schools to teach various social values against those responsibilities for teaching educational basics. This is a complex and daunting task, worthy of true academic research. Instead, we're merely given pontifications that "handouts" are banned, forevermore to be known as resource sheets.

This book is educational junk science at the zenith.

Readers are far better served by studying the works of E.D. Hirsch, Jr. His Cultural Literacy is exactly what EVERY American student needs to know, and I'd make no additions regarding my specific culture's religion, race or social habits to his work.

Excellent resource for how you deal with racism.......2007-03-09

This is an excellent book to really define and review how you deal with the different cultures in your classroom or your school. This book allows the reader to look how you deal with events that you may not be aware that may be prejudice.

I would highly recommend it.

Today's Management Trends.......2005-10-13

It was straightforward, relevant, and used examples from outside the business world (I especially liked the one about air to air combat) to parallel non-associated actions and show that the thought processes were similar. I think it was also balanced by explaining some of the pitfalls that may happen from too much of a good thing, like the call center monitoring tools. Great examples from the real world. I got a lot out of it.

Outstanding practicle advice.......2005-05-31

Based on over 35 years of experience leading Information Technology organziations as a CIO, I believe that the book by Hugos is a must read for both CIO's and other business function leaders. The book reflects Hugos' vast experience as a CIO and contains practical advice for both. For CIO's, Hugos not only provides realistic and common-sense advice on "what and how" to do things, but perhaps more importantly, "what and how" NOT to do things. CIO's can earn their keeps often by not falling into the trap of following the hype--many companies implement complex and expensive systems like ERP's and CRM's without compelling business case--just to "join the club." Hugos correctly points out that often adding futures and functions to existing well-run systems is a better (safer, faster, cheaper) way to address business needs.
His practical advice to functinal business leaders also hit the target. Particularly valuable are his suggestions on how to ensure IT projects should be structured to succeed and once they are started, how to make sure they are implemented on time and on budget.

Useful book for the busy executive: I am the CFO of my organization and manage many operating units. I have read Mr. Hugos' book and found it refreshing, to the point and extremely useful. In particular the last chapter has armed me with all of the important questions that provide the framework for keeping all projects on task and within budget. These questions provide a common communication framework between technical people and business unit managers that result in projects that stay focused and on track.

Providing an easy to read, but comprehensive understanding of the real time enterprise, this book is a valuable reference to the busy CIO or IT executive. The book provides insight into not just the theory behind a real time enterprise, but also details on how to implement this within your organisation. The excellent layout and the use of diagrams and tables does not detract from the message, while the lists provide a valuable reference point. I would recommend this book to any IT executive who is trying to unlock the IT value proposition.

A CONTEMPORY VISUAL FEAST.......2001-11-15

I purchased this book unseen and was bissfully enthralled when I finally viewed it. WOW! The work showcased is diverse and thrillingly divine. Use of colour is totally inspiring - exquisite - a colour "hit" (for you colour junkies out there). For me this book evokes a great feeling of spontaneity, but also respect for true craftwomenship in colour and design - the artists make it look sooo easy!

The photos through out the book are very clear so the quilting can also be seen well on most pieces. Some of the photos could have been bigger (where there is more than one quilt per page), but generally the photo size has been chosen with great skill balancing maximum number of pictures per artist with maximum detail.

All the quilts are DEFINITELY contemporary ie not traditional, although I would have called Rennee Gosse's (France) "boutis" pieces more traditional. I have seen a similar technique called French trapunto.

It was the most wonderful surprise to discover that each artist provides a project and shares their secrets to recreate that fabulous project. All the projects are a joy to look at and are crying out to be started. In particular, Anne Woringer (France), Dorle Stern-Straeter (Germany) and Odile Texiers (France) projects are truly sensational and I thank them for being so generous in sharing techniques that can only be considered as THEIR OWN as they are the trademarks of each of the mentioned artists work. So, so amazingly exciting!!!

Beginners or unconfident sewers/quilters may not find the projects easy or detailed enough as the directions are brief, although, I consider them precise enough, enabling me to reproduce the particular technique I'm interested in. Personally I really like the layout with minimal, to the point text supported with diagrams. Again the spontaneity of the works shines through as many of the artists improvise as the work is created.

This "treasure" has not left my bedside all year and has been like a key opening creative floodgates. Numerous blocks and quilt designs have gushed forth from reading this fantastic book and realising the unending possibilities for the techniques demonstrated.

Anyone who likes contemporary works, consider this a MUST for your bookshelf. A true delight, a visual feast and high powered fuel for creativity. I can't wait for the next book in the series (yep, that IS a hint! - please I beg you!)

With one glance, I was pulled in and fascinated by this unique book that features a variety of contemporary European quiltmakers. Each quiltmaker is profiled and a gallery of exciting work is displayed. In addition, each artist shares a project. Each project is well-illustrated and many detail interesting techniques as well as insights into how other quilts were constructed. The layout of the book is stunning--beautiful, rich color and crisp, clear photographs. It's a joy to look at as well as to read. Quilts from Europe is a wonderful addition to any quiltmaker's library.

This timely book traces the development of banking and paper money in republican Tianjin in order to explore the creation of social trust in financial institutions. Framing the study around Bian Baimei, a conscientious branch manager of the Bank of China, Brett Sheehan analyzes the actions of bankers, officials, and local elites as they tried to overcome political and financial crises and instill trust in the banking system.

After early failures in promoting trust, government authority as a regulator of the financial system gradually increased, peaking in 1935, when the state unified the money supply for the first time in several hundred years. Concurrently, when local elites proved unable to develop successful strategies to make people trust the system, their influence declined. The need for trust in increasingly complex financial arrangements redefined state-society relations, simultaneously enhancing state power and creating new constraints on the actions of both elites and governments.
