Statistics 001: For Educators. .......2006-09-19
I taught a section on statistics to educators back in 2001 and the textbook we used was a "statistics without the statistics" coursepack which failed to satisfy anyone. I am certain, however, that if I had Dr. Creighton's Schools and Data, my students would have felt more comfortable and learned a great deal more. With its specific examples for the schools and lack of jargon this volume definitely fills a need in regards to ubiquitous Ed School quantitative research syllabi. It not only explains statistics like t tests, z scores, and correlation coefficients, but it also provides excellent rationale for where and how they should be used in our schools. Such illumination is most welcome as many teachers-to-be think statistical measurement is a waste of time. Dr. Creighton shows readers exactly how to use the SPSS and GB-STAT programs--down to the exact functions to enable and click--which will make performing calculations and determinations far easier than most people expect. We live in a time wherein the public is gradually starting to discover the importance of the phrase "research based" so a book like this is invaluable as a means to bettering the education of children as it helps to separate the good from the trendy when it comes to instructional method (not to mention all the other ways in which statistical analysis could improve the functioning of the schools as well). It was an excellent buy.

A few itsy bitsy pieces of useful information.......2005-07-16
I will have to start by saying that I am glad I read this book. No other has convinced me as much of the need to put serious effort into brand, image and advertising. However, I feel that much of this could be said in a single article. Much of the rest of the content can be found in other text. Perhaps the only exception is the extra effort that the author puts into to discussing the need to motivate those around you and to sell your idea, which I guess is still a part of brand, image and advertising.
The man certainly seems to have a talent for promotion and selling his ideas. Therefore, if you want to learn more on this specific topic, the book is a good buy; however, I still think an article in a business journal would be more concise and just as useful. If you are just starting to read up on different ways of running a business then this book would be a good buy. If you consider yourself well read on the topic of business management then this probably isn't for you.
On another note, if you are looking for examples of how the theorised phenomenon of American cultural imperialism works, this is a good book. Frequently the author mentions how the content of foreign programs must be changed to suit the American market while not once mentioning any effort to adjust his own products for markets outside of the US. When one considers the title, the book is almost ideal for this purpose.
In summary, I am glad that I read it but I feel I could have acquired the information I wanted more efficiently.
History of the itsy bisy entertainment company.......2001-11-12
This book has talked about the career deveolpment of Mr. Kenn.
He is a professional in marketing and has done many noticeable work, e.g.the repositioning of MEXX and Thomas the tank engine and Friend(TTE&F).
In this book, Viselman has used (TTE&F) several times to illustrated the marketing skill which he has been used, liking finding a niche market for yourself, if you are a new entrant to the market.
Besides, he has talked about how did his mother and father affected the way he think. Many stories writen by his friend can be found this book. And you can also learn communication skill from him.
However, some time frame haven't mentioned clearly. So, it is quite difficult to follow the development of each issue. If more clear sub-heading are provided, it will be much better for the reader.
Take on the world!.......2001-08-09
This book was highlighted in a trade publication that I get at my office. After the series ended, I had to pick up the book and I am so glad that I did. It is excellent. It can be applied to so many different areas. Whether you are a stay at home parent to a small business owner to a corporate giant, this book applies to us all with great clarity. The writing style is easy to follow, the suggestions are helpful without being overpowering, and you will just be "on fire" to take on the world!
"Eight Steps" make great business sense for any industry!.......2001-01-16
This book was an exciting challenge for me, being completely new to the market of children's entertainment,.... However, I found in this book some homegrown business sense that is rare to find in all those "get-rich-quick" or gimmicky"business model of the week" books, which tend to be popular in retail bookstores. Kenn Viselman has a solid, experience-based understanding of the fundamentals of business, whether discussing international expansion or local marketing.
Eight Giant Steps to Global Domination is an enjoyable read, but also reinforces its core concepts with workshops at the end of each chapter. Kenn mainly talks about his experiences, then makes general business applications for them, then allows the reader to come up with his/her own personalized applications. For this reason, the book is more than just a story about one man and his entertainment company; it is about anyone who believes in a product or service, and is concerned with how to make their dreams into a reality. I strongly recommend this book to any student of business - it is insightful and relevant for the MBA student, interesting and entertaining to the undergrad student, and is a reminder of best practices and unorthodox solutions to the experienced businessperson.

Book Description
Winning leadership principles inspired by the military career of this complex, and effective World War II general
Although often deemed abrasive and arrogant, General George S. Patton was a remarkable leader who trained and motivated his men to achieve astounding results. With an emphasis on mission, he transformed an utterly demoralized American force in North Africa into an army capable of defeating the Nazis' brilliant General Rommel. Storming across France into Germany at a breakneck pace, his unit conquered more enemy troops and liberated more civilians than any other in World War II. Now Alan Axelrod, an accomplished writer in the areas of both military history and business management, applies Patton's proven leadership principles and competitive tactics to the corporate battlefield.
Executives and managers will learn straightforward, practical lessons in dynamic, results-oriented management. Illuminated by Patton's own words, chapters cover how to develop a leadership attitude and image, communicate effectively, establish clear priorities, inspire others, instill loyalty, build a team, coach and mentor, resolve conflict, and sustain optimum performance. And, as a man who regularly was required to overcome his failings or turn them to his advantage, Patton offers an example of excellence within reach of all of us.
Featuring an insert of World War II photographs, PATTON ON LEADERSHIP will inspire today's workplace leaders as it urges them on toward victory in their own companies.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Patton "and" leadership.......2007-05-30
Notwithstanding the devotion of only one part (out of ten) on the background/history of Patton leaving nine on 183 quotations (and elaborations) by or about him, this book made me understand more about this controversially one of the greatest generals/military leaders ever than the few biographies I read of him comibined. That's no exaggeration. Thanks to the author's intelligent pick and insightful analysis. A very helpful management book indeed. In short, highly recommended.
Below please find some of the quotations I like the most for your reference.
51. Never Assume: One day a colonel was under attack by Patton for a decision based on the weather. The colonel explained, "General, we cannot predict the weather. We must assume average weather conditions and plan accordingly." "We never assume anything is average," patton Said. "If we do any assumng, we will assume the worst weather."
52. Learn from the Facts: We passed the scen of the tank battle during the initial German breakthrough. I counted over a hundred American armored fighting vehicles along the road, and, as a result, issued an order, subsequently carried out, that every tank should be examined and the direction, caliber, and type of hit which put it out made of record, so that we would have data from which to construct a better tank.
131. Personal Best: Patton's wife, Beatrice, found her husband kneeling in prayer before a polo match. "Afterward she asked what he'd beeen praying for. 'For help in the pol game,' he replied.'Were you praying for a win?' she inquired. 'Hell no,' he said. 'I was praying to do my best.'"
170. Cultivate Independence: Lack of orders is no excuse for inaction.
*the ultimate warrior*.......2007-05-06
Books on military leadership can be complicated, long and full of ambiguity. Not so with this book. No dry theory. No long explanation. Straight to the point with examples based on integrity and focus on effectiveness. In its kind, it must be the best book ever.
General Patton is my hero!.......2006-06-18
I luv, luv, luv this book. If you are a Patton fan and you love leadership you get two for the price of one. Great history as well as great leadership principles. Down to earth, short, wonderfully written vignettes that capture the essence of General Patton and "real" leadership.
If you love wimpy leadership principles this book IS NOT for you.

Quick and Dirty.......2005-10-10
Axelrod boils down Patton's leadership principles to a quick hitter that proves valuable to any leader. The book is filled with examples of Patton being hard on his men, knowing that it will ultimately save their lives in combat down the road. Easy to read and nicely chopped up; so the reader can pick it up and put it down when the opportunity presents itself.
Like Nick Lowe sang, "You gotta be cruel to be kind..."
Patton on Toast.......2005-08-30
Leadership depends upon dynamism (action). "Go forward." (p. 53) It means application using past battles as lessons. The author was clear that Patton believed in direct action based on facts. The center of the book stresses Patton's action orientation ad nauseum. The three maxums are speed, simplicity and boldness. In presentation, Patton has the sound of genius and the subtext tells a story of impulsive foolishness, high drama and overcompensation. It is unclear if the author intended to impliy that or if it is misreading in the Paul de Man sense. Pattion was a show and, perhaps, a rebel though that is not clear in the book either. He said "Army regulations are written by those who have never been in battle." (p 248) The author suggests it has something to say about corporate management. What, the author doesn't say. Using polite military terms, the book is S.O.S.(on toast) Go figure. Eric J. Lindblom PhD Harvard

Insight into Banking.......2000-05-25
From approximately 1312 to 1415 Bruges was the hub of European trade. English wool came to the Staple where it was distributed to the Flemish weavers, made into cloth and sold all over the world. Spices and silks from the caravan trade arrived in Venice and were carted to Bruges for sale in northern Europe. The bulky goods were moved about by the merchant; what about his money? One day he has many bags of gold coins and another day he has few or none. He needs to be able to deposit his gold somewhere and have a written certificate of deposit for it--that is, credit. So one merchant becomes a banker--he stays in one place, receiving and paying out. The coins--from all over the world--are a problem. The banker becomes money-changer. He takes gold coins to the mint to be melted down and made into local coinage.
The Lombards ran pawn shops, the equivalent of today's plastic credit card. Consumer debt, at fairly high interest rates, with the pawned objects as security, starts here. Very poor people who needed to borrow small sums from time to time depended on the Lombards--and hated them too. Notice that widows and others could invest in the pawn shop--loan money to the Lombards--and receive interest once a year. This was working capital for the pawn shop owner; otherwise he would have a warehouse full of objects and no money to lend to his customers.
Goods flowed and credit flowed and business boomed. There were defaults; too many defaults would drive the bankers, money-changers and Lombards into bankruptcy which in turn ruined merchants and manufacturers. Finally Bruges lost out to Antwerp.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author gives interpretations as well as facts. One can get a clear picture of Bruges in its heyday.

Book Description
This book shows how British politics is being transformed from a leadership-run system to one dictated by public needs and demands. No longer confined to party politics, organizations including the monarchy, the BBC, universities, local councils, charities and the Scottish Parliament are adopting the tools of market intelligence to understand their market needs and demands. The political marketing revolution raises many questions, such as whether the student or patient really does know best and can decide his own education and health care. The book calls for a debate about the movement of the British political system towards a market-orientation and a re-negotiation of the relationship between leaders and the market. While recognizing the need for political leaders to listen, this debate places some responsibilities on the political consumer, looking to create a new relationship that might work more effectively for both sides.
