Book Description
Praise for
This Book Is Not Required: An Emotional Survival Manual for Students, Third Edition
"This book SHOULD be required. Bell and McGrane have created a lively, insightful, and tangible source that the student can utilize in the classroom and in life. They want to read the book because it speaks to them and provides me a classroom full of hungry, alert minds."
- Melanie C. Klein, California State University, Northridge
This Book Is Not Required: An Emotional Survival Manual for Students, Third Edition invites students to examine their college education - what it could be and what, alas, it often is. This book does not look at the four years of college merely in terms of the formal world of classes and professors. It looks at the larger experience of college life and its affect on students during these four years. After all, some of the most important learning in college takes place outside of the classroom.
This Book Is Not Required has been regarded as a powerful tool to introduce students to the sociological analysis and personal reflection of college life. Now in its
Third Edition, the book continues to educate students on the college experience as a whole—looking at the personal, social, intellectual, and spiritual demands and opportunities presented by college life. In a personable and refreshingly straightforward style, authors Inge Bell, Bernard McGrane, and John Gunderson critically discuss how academic life distinguishes between learning the institutional rules of higher education and internalizing those rules. The book demystifies professors and teaching assistants by discussing their institutional roles and incentives and invites students to take responsibility for—and make the most of—their educational experiences.
Key Features
- Real-life student vignettes honestly address actual issues facing college students
- Two new chapters, "Welcome to College" (Chapter 1) and "Questions of Academic Integrity" (Chapter 5), explore the increased prevalence of cheating on campus due to the Internet
- Encourages a participatory college education and personal reflection for students in many different disciplines
This Book Is Not Required is a valuable guidebook for any student new to the college experience. It is also an excellent text for Freshman Orientation programs and for a number of courses in Sociology, Psychology, and Personal Adjustment.
Customer Reviews:
Get an earlier, cheaper, and better edition if you can.......2005-01-09
Twenty years ago, I read an earlier, and much less
expensive, edition of this book. Shortly thereafter,
the book and I parted company. Too bad. I have not seen
the book since. What brings me to this webpage and what
constitutes this review is what I remember: "When you
start to think of your life in terms of a career, worry
and anxiety will be your constant partners"
(paraphrasing from memory). So true. Nonetheless,
college remains a happy memory for me, whatever the
grades I earned back then were. The secret, I think, is
having the right perspective. Inge Bell might be able
to help. At least, she's worth a try.
Another reviewer faults the book for including
Buddhism and socialism. I do remember the Buddhism. It
was my first and only exposure to that religion. I
appreciate that, though the religion is not for me.
Suggestion: look for a used copy of an EARLIER (first
or second) edition. Five stars for those editions.
Looking at those pages of the current (third) edition
visible on amazon, it appears that newly-added
coauthors Bernard McGrane and John Gunderson have added
lots and lots of words. Ugh. They probably have
doctorates in education. Three stars for it. It seems
to be not so "underground" anymore, though you might
still find it useful. Insist on Inge alone, if you can
get it.
If Only I had Heard of This Book 4 Years Ago.......2003-10-23
This was an excellent book! I am nearing the end of my undergraduate degree now and plan to pursue a Master's degree. This book helped me to put my life and my goals into perspective. For the greater part of my life, I have become obsessed with grades and the pusuit of things to add to my resume that will ensure myself of getting into a good grad school and being awarded with a good career upon graduation. I disagree with readers who criticize Bell for being one-sided in her anti-institionalism (some say socialist) arguements. Common sense tells most students that grades are important because the reality is that our educational background and subsequent GPA help determine where we end up in life after university. The point is though that these things HELP but they are not the be-all-end-all nor should they be. It takes much more to define a person and build their character. In North American society, as young people we are constantly bombarded with the pressures of accomplishment and achievement through school and work. Of course, these are more than noble goals but when is it ever enough? This is what I see as the main point of the book and the author is sending us a warning to "stop and smell the roses" in life before we end up directionless and unfilled. Great addition to every young person's reading list!
I wish it would have been required in 1986!!!!.......2003-09-18
Being a non-traditional student, I needed this years ago. This would have uncovered the mystery of College for me as a teenager and explained so much that College courses just do not offer to Freshmen. I will hand this down to my children and encourage any parent to purchase it for all High School Seniors.
Survival Manual is an understatement.......2002-05-22
This is a great book. It makes a great high school graduation gift for any kid about to go off to college. I wish I'd been able to read it before I began my undergraduate education. It points out a lot of pitfalls and potential problems that most recent high school grads are totally oblivious to in addition to reminding people there's more to living than trying to make the dean's list every semester. You need friends, you need a real life, you need to be comfortable with who you are.
Lifesaving and Lifechanging.......2002-01-11
Reading this book for the first time (I have read it many times since) I was most impacted by the chapter on grades. Bell hits the nail on the head: the entire system of grading, whether necessary for ranking students or not, does influence the way students perceive themselves. True learning happens when one is free from the quest for an A...when one is learning for the learning's sake.
This book is an excellent emotional and psychological lifesaver for any high school, college, or grad student. I love this book!

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-09-28
This is a good book for Mid career PMs. Also, a good reference for MS Programs
Useful for financial systems projects.......2000-12-14
This book is very helpful to knowledge workers. It is now translated into Chinese and doing well in China -- the first printing sold out quickly. It is friendly written and interesting. It concentrates on real issues on projects. These are not techniques, but people issues. Frame has good technique book called New Project Management. Managing Projects in Organizations has many examples that are realistic and apply in all industries and cultures. I find it especially useful for practioners in the financial and information technology sectors.
Highly readable and on point.......2000-08-22
This book is a refreshing look at what is most important in achieving project success: people functioning in organizations. While it reviews key tools and techniques in a user-friendly fashion, its chief goal is to raise readers' awareness of the central role of people and organizations in delivering successful projects. What's more, it is an easy read, filled with practical examples of real world scenarios. It is particularly useful for knowledge workers in businesses like IT, finance, telecoms, R&D and training because it does not get bogged down in painfully detailed treatment of techniques that are marginally useful on real-world projects.
Discussess only a few topics in project management.......2000-04-19
You are bound to be disappointed if you want to learn how to manage projects from this book.
This book is a very introductory and basic book that describes project management and projects, and then delves into aspects that the author considers interesting. It can best be described as an elementary introduction to the field.
I liked the "Fast Forward MBA in Project Management" much more than this book. It gives one a set of tools and a process for managing projects.
Dry but informative.......2000-02-02
I read this book in conjunction with an online course I wastaking through ESI's The Vine. I am new to project management andthis was a good reference text, but I don't think I would haveabsorbed the information as well if I had been relying solely on the book. There is a lot of good information here, but it's pretty dry. I don't recommend trying to read this one at bedtime. END

Customer Reviews:
Some of the Styles are not Vogue.......2006-07-06
I was left wanting a little more after getting this book. You would think a Vogue book would have up to date styles. I found a lot of the patterns dated and even kind of ugly. I wouldn't spend my valuable time knitting something that I wouldn't want to wear myself.
Great for Newer Knitters.......2003-08-22
This book is full of patterns using todays thicker yarns - great for quick projects. I knit a floor-length hooded vest in a weekend!
Although some of the patterns are a bit outdated, you can easily adapt them for todays styles (i.e. shorten up the length of the pullovers and add bell sleeves).
There is a wide variety of patterns, from sweaters to shawls to evening wear.
Some experience required - as there is shaping involved.

Book Description
In the period since the Second World War there has been both a massive influx of women into the Canadian job market and substantive changes to the welfare state as early expansion gave way, by the 1970s, to a prolonged period of retrenchment and restructuring. Through a detailed historical account of the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program from 1945 to 1997, Ann Porter demonstrates how gender was central both to the construction of the post-war welfare state, as well as to its subsequent crisis and restructuring. Drawing on a wide range of sources (including archival material, UI administrative tribunal decisions, and documents from the government, labour and women's groups) she examines the implications of restructuring for women's equality, as well as how women's groups, labour and the state interacted in efforts to shape the policy agenda.
Porter argues that, while the post-war welfare state model was based on a family with a single male breadwinner, the new model is one that assumes multiple family earners and encourages employability for both men and women. The result has been greater formal equality for women, but at the same time the restructuring and reduction of benefits have undermined these gains and made women's lives increasingly difficult. Using concepts from political economy, feminism, and public policy, this study will be of interest across a range of disciplines.

Book Description
Once upon a time, marketers barraged customers with hard-sell tactics. Today, consumers use products to define themselves and others. People are swayed not by corporate-generated hype, but by consumer-generated buzz. That means companies must shift their focus away from marketing to people and toward marketing with them. In "consumerspace," firms partner with customers to develop brand personalities and create interactive fantasies. The winners understand that we buy products not just because of what they do, but because of what they mean. Market share is out; share of mind is in.
Conquering Consumerspace reveals the accelerating blurring of traditional boundaries between branded commodities and everyday life. Solomon's timely book presents a new way of looking at customers: recognizing them as partners in an ongoing marketing transaction rather than as passive pawns at the receiving end of a sales pitch. Conquering Consumerspace also defines the place of customer feedback in product conception, design, and production, and why customizability is no longer a luxury option but a requirement.
From online "buzz communities" to theme stores and product placement to guerrilla marketing, what we consume is inextricably woven into our daily life experience, creating both challenges and opportunities for companies to accelerate and deepen their customers' relationships with their products, services, and brands.
Customer Reviews:
Little insight - now dated.......2006-08-05
If you want to read a book chock full of "company X did Y with a great result" with no followup on the long-term viability of what company X did, this is the book for you. Frankly, some three years after publication, I find it dated (unlike, say Blink, or Paradox of Choice). The book seems writtne around the 10th grade level. Perhaps of help to the pure consumer insight neophyte, but if you have studied CB at all, skip this title.
"Conquering Audiences".......2005-09-14
While much of the literature I have read concerning trends in the market-place seems to alienate readers as simply not trendy enough to "get it," Solomon is a complete success in ensuring his readers are "along for the ride." Solomon takes readers on a journey through witty real-life scenarios and enlightening market-world fact. "Conquering Consumerspace" is an enjoyable AND informative read (a rare combination); it's a perfect fit for audiences ranging from students to academicians, and from shop-til-you-droppers to big business CEOs.
A great read.

Insightful !.......2005-02-23
Brands have a major role in determining what people buy. Consumers purchase goods based, in part, on an emotional reaction to brands. A brand can make people feel good, cater to their personalities or give them a sense of belonging to a group they would like to join. Brands can make people seem wealthier or more appealing. But branding has to be kept in perspective, and not everyone buys author Michael Solomon's viewpoint that consumers' allegiance to particular gym shoes or soft drinks helps define their roles in society. His book places branding in the middle of the commercial universe and spins off some interesting, but highly specialized, conversations about "aspirational" marketing, "retailtainment" and other developments. Citing his research and sources in sociology, advertising and media studies, Solomon offers solid material that we recommend as necessary background reading for branding professionals. However, readers from other fields need to be really intrigued by branding and marketing to work with the book's tossed salad of unrelated marketing factoids, its generalizations and its focus on branding as a consumer driver, to the near exclusion of other factors. If the melee of brand competition intrigues you, read on.
What a Find!.......2004-03-30
Michael Solomon's Conquering Consumerspace is a tremendous resource for an entrepreneurial, marketing novice like me. It conveys everything I need to know about branding and navigating the waters in today's competitive marketplace. The insights and practical ideas provided will prove invaluable for my company's success.
Wonderful useful material!!!!!.......2004-03-24
Center For Allergy and Asthma - As an eighteen office single speciality group throughout the Greater N.Y. area servicing 35,000 patients each month, we find ourselves in a highly competitive market! Our group has been very successful in treating patients on a day to day basis but we felt the need to increase the educational component of our medical regimen. After reading "Conquering Consumerspace" while on vacation, I knew that we could aid our patients by utilizing a new approach to their care. Dr. Mike Solomon's book has helped us understand our patients' needs by customizing each patients' medications, schedule, socioeconomic variables and preferred doctor in each office. We have become partners in their care rather than just providers. I can not recommend "Conquering Consumerspace" enough, its principles have "branded" our medical organization as the asthma centers of the Greater N.Y. area.

A very good guide in using LP in optimization problems.......1999-09-08
It's a great book for whoever is interested in linear programming applications to real world cases. From the introduction to the last chapter, the book provides a clear view of how linear programming works, how it can be applied, and what its advantages are. Lots of examples and exercises make this book a very good guide in using linear programming in optimization problems.
