2 out of 5 stars Decision making using the normal distribution is risky, not uncertain.......2005-12-21

This book contains a)the preliminary introductions to the Nobel Memorial Prize speeches given by the Nobel Memorial Prize winners in Economics Science for the years 1996-2000,b)a summary of their careers, including a brief discussion of other individual scholars who had helped ,influenced,or worked with them, and c)the actual speech given at the time they received their award. It is amazing how much of the work done by this group of Nobel Memorial Prize winners in the various fields of theoretical, applied and policy economics is based on the assumption that the the normal probability distribution can be applied to the data in the various fields of specialization of economics in which they did their award winning work. There is no difference between this group and the great majority of previous Nobel Memorial prize winners from 1968-1995 or later winners from 2001-2005.There is no mention whether any of the winners did any test for goodness of fit,for example,a Chi Square test, before they based all of their conclusions on the assumption that a normal probability distribution was the correct distribution to represent the data. The Nobel Memorial prize committee should decide to honor with Nobel Memorial prizes in 2006 two researchers who have overwhelmingly demonstrated the very limited applicability of the normal probability distribution outside the areas of inventory control and quality control. Those two individuals are Benoit Mandelbrot and Daniel Ellsberg. The awarding of the Memorial Nobel Prize to economists Mirrlees, Merton,Scholes, and McFadden(and Kahneman and Smith in 2001) , for work which is inaccurate and unreliable if the use of the normal distribution is inappropriate, makes no sense given that the work of Ellsberg and Mandelbrot overwhelmingly demonstrates that the applicability of the normal distribution is very limited.

      Book Description

Migs Damiani, noted speaker, trainer, and practicing professional in Facilities Management, takes on the trends of downsizing, outsourcing, and re-engineering the facilities maintenance and management workforce of medium-large companies.

Starting with an estimate of $30 billion annually that is forecast for outsourcing by the year 2003, Damiani tackles issues of productivity and efficiency as they relate to nurturing an "in-house" staff or hiring outside help. He expertly argues the case for building up in-house staff and services. In addition he provides valuable, ready-to-use, step-by-step project management and construction development guidelines.

Throughout the book the author's theme is that strong, positive facilities professionals will win the confidence and approval of upper management by nurturing talent from within. As a result, the FM professional may well advance to higher levels of responsibility within the organization.

      * Teaches facilities leaders the business savvy and people skills often lacking in their training and prior experience * Reveals the thirteen most common problems encountered in Facilities Management...with their solutions! * Shows how to measure success and lead change - including a case study of a winning FM department * Provides insights on capturing the attention of top management * Presents strategies for developing excellence, improving facility management's image, and developing an FM service strategy * Shows how to outsource the right way -- when it's a viable alternative -- and reveals hidden costs of leasing * Demonstrates the connection between maintenance and indoor air quality

Management consulting is big business. Consultants often make very good money, and the good ones throw intriguing ideas on the table and get people excited about their work. But is any of their advice actually useful? Does it get implemented and lead to more productive workplaces? Chris Argyris thinks that most of it doesn't work, because it has too many "abstract claims, inconsistencies, and logical gaps to be useful as a concrete basis for concrete actions in concrete settings." No matter what managers hear from consultants, they ultimately resort to these five behaviors, according to Argyris: State a message that's inconsistent ("You're in charge of this, but check in with Steve"); act as if it's not inconsistent; make the inconsistency undiscussable; make the undiscussability undiscussable; act as if you're not doing any of the above. Flawed Advice and the Management Trap shows managers how to break out. He shows that a choice is sound when the emphasis is on facts and accumulated data and isn't influenced by the relative power positions of the people involved.

Top company managers and human-resources professionals will probably find this book most interesting. For them, the ideas in Flawed Advice and the Management Trap show the path away from a management style that breeds resentment and internecine warfare and points toward one that allows the facts to speak for themselves. --Lou Schuler

      Book Description

Flawed Advice and the Management Trap: How Managers Can Know When They're Getting Good Advice and When They're Not is the first book to show how and why so much of today's business advice is flawed, and how managers and executives can better evaluate advice given to their firms Practitioners and scholars agree that businesses in the coming millennium will be managed differently than firms of the 20th century. And getting there from here, according to today's best advice, will require creative change. In this pioneering work, Argyris, one of the world's leading organizational thinkers, reviews a wide array of business advice from the best and brightest thinkers and consultants and concludes that as appealing as their ideas may be, most of them are simply not workable. They are too full of abstract claims, logical gaps, and inconsistencies, to be useful. And ironically, even when their recommendations are implemented correctly, the result is often failure. Why do these gaps in logic exist, and how can they be more effectively discovered? Applying a disciplined critique to numerous representative examples of advice about leadership, learning, change, and employee commitment, Argyris shows readers how to be more critical of the advice they are given, how to learn new approaches for appraising employee performance, and how to generate an internal commitment to values and better strategy. In our ever expanding global market, innovative business advice is at a premium, and giving this advice has become a lucrative industry in and of itself. This book provides the critical lens necessary to evaluate which advice is best for your organization.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2003-07-06

This is another fine book by Argyris. I think this, in addition to "Strategic Organizational Change" by Beitler, is very helpful. (Beitler has an outstanding chapter on how to evaluate consultants.)

      5 out of 5 stars Valuable insight!.......2003-06-30

I recommend everything that Chris Argyris writes. This is no exception. This book has insight about management advice that reminds me of the work of Alfred Kieser at the University of Mannheim (Germany). I highly recommend the work of both Argyris and Kieser.

      Dr. Michael Beitler
      Author of "Strategic Organizational Change"

4 out of 5 stars tools to examine advices.......2003-04-17

The author presents tools to examine advices from executives, change consultants, academics, etc., and offers four basic tests for the actionability of advice. The good advice should specify the detailed, concrete behaviors required to achieve the intended consequences; it must be crafted in the form of designs that contain causal statements; people must have, or be able to be taught, the concepts and skills required to implement those causal statements; and the context in which it is to be implemented does not prevent its implementation.

Argyris' theory of good advice, being highly practical and actionable, is based on the author's theoretical framework of "Model-II", exposed in his book "Organizational Learning II", co-authored with Donald Schoen.

The book does also contain a brilliant section about effective strategic choices, written by Roger Martin in very friendly tone. A high-quality strategic choice, according to Martin, possesses four key attributes: it is genuine; it is sound; it is actionable; and it is compelling. The section uncovers these principles in details.

The book shows the difference between external and internal employee commitment to the advices and helps to create and foster internal commitment.

You can test the actionability of the advices given in this book using these advices themselves.

I would recommend "Organizational Learning II: Theory, Method and Practice" prior to reading this book. I would also recommend "Leading the Revolution" by Gary Hamel in addition to these books.

4 out of 5 stars Read this book after you read all the others...........2001-03-28

Since you have an idea what this book is about from the other reviewers, I'll stick to my opinion of it rather than rehash what others have written.

It helped me a lot to know a bit of Argyris' other works (see his articles in Harvard Business Review for the quickest review), and also, to have read the works he critiques. While he always has such superb insights, including asking all the right questions that expose gaps in the business guru's works, because of the writing style (what it leaves out and what jumps it makes), it requires a bit of background if you're not familiar with his main points.

In any case, anyone who fancies him/herself a business consultant, or anyone who gives advice in any context, professionally or even to partners/kids/neighbors, should check out what Argyris has to say. You may find that you're not having the effect you believe you are. And that effect is like waking up from sleepwalking down the middle of a dark but busy road at night, without a flashlight.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-20

Chris Argyris says that management advice - the content of countless seminars by management consultants and human resource professionals - rests upon a discrepancy. The goal of a more democratic workplace with empowered, internally-driven workers contradicts the actual actions executives take to produce this result. Argyris contends that much leadership, decision-making, corporate change and management advice lacks critical thinking. He urges executives to seek specific, testable, actionable advice. Role-playing and numerous examples show how advice givers may fail to understand the nature of the problems they're addressing. This book is valuable in helping managers identify flawed advice and understand why so many management initiatives fail. However, the author's own recommendations suffer from the same lack of testability. It just may not be possible to test for the effects of specific advice in complex situations. Still, this is an important book because it urges executives to think critically about the guidance they are given. We at getAbstract recommend this book to managers and to those who advise them.

            Book Description

The Field and the Forge offers an innovative approach to the pre-industrial history of Europe and the Mediterranean basin from Roman times through to the Industrial Revolution. This wide-ranging analysis demonstrates how technology changed the scope of state and empire building, and explores
why this scope was realized in the ancient world rather than the medieval west. This work not only considers the who and what of history, but provides a clear demonstration of why things happened.

            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful account of pre-Industrial resource realities.......2003-10-13

Professor John Landers tackles a question that we all have in the back of our minds: what was life like when we only had the muscle power of humans and draft animals to aid our productivity? The answers--in terms of economy, warfare, and the spacial constraints on activities--are spelled out in this thought-provoking research. Along with description and analysis, the author provides statistics on a variety of issues, such as the trade shipping time across the Mediterranean between various ports, the spacial constraints of armies, and many other topics. Professor Landers is a noted author on population, who in this book examines "time, space, and population" and their connections to the "organic" resources used prior to the Industrial Revolution.

I found the book enjoyable to read and instructional to boot. While the story is focused on Western Europe, history buffs who enjoy economics and warfare will find this a worthwhile read.

Now that Americans are dividing up into militias and staking out a few acres of inviolable homeland, perhaps it's time to ask how the country came to be so deeply fragmented. Joseph Turow points to the ways that the techniques of "target marketing" by advertising agencies exploited and exacerbated existing fissures in U.S. society. Turow is too subtle a thinker to believe that advertising is responsible for the differences between people, but he makes a strong case that the way those differences have been used to distinguish different markets for different products has, simply by defining and presenting various subcultures, furthered those differences. This vicious cycle of targeting and producing target markets is analyzed both historically and politically to show the difficult effects of assuming that Americans are not united, except against each other.

              Book Description

Combining shrewd analysis of contemporary practices with a historical perspective, Breaking Up America traces the momentous shift that began in the mid-1970s when advertisers rejected mass marketing in favor of more aggressive target marketing. Turow shows how advertisers exploit differences between consumers based on income, age, gender, race, marital status, ethnicity, and lifesyles.

"An important book for anyone wanting insight into the advertising and media worlds of today. In plain English, Joe Turow explains not only why our television set is on, but what we are watching. The frightening part is that we are being watched as we do it."—Larry King

"Provocative, sweeping and well made . . . Turow draws an efficient portrait of a marketing complex determined to replace the 'society-making media' that had dominated for most of this century with 'segment-making media' that could zero in on the demographic and psychodemographic corners of our 260-million-person consumer marketplace."—Randall Rothenberg, Atlantic Monthly

              3 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-12-01

I recently read this book. It has a great history of the advertising agency. Many of the ways in which the author thinks shed light on the recent history of advertising. A few of the chapters in the second half of the book are outdated now, since it was predicting the future. For instance, the predictions of the internet "newsgroups" will be big for establishing communities of users, could be converted into blogs. The last chapter is good on the tribalism of advertising. I would suggest the first few chapters and the last chapter to anyone who wants to understand what is going on and will continue for the next decade or so as advertising changes to favor the consumer.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks........1999-01-28

Great book. Actually, it was recommended by Amazon as I was unfamiliar with the author, but very interested in the topic. If you are in media, communications or marketing this book analyzes the industry in a very granular way - like looking under the hood. However, Turow does not get so lost in detail, he brings the big picture into focus suggesting the cultural implications of market segmentation, database marketing, media audience packaging and the rise of niche content media like cable TV, magazines and of course the Internet. Transient echoes of Marshall MacLuhan and Tony Shwartz's concept of narcissism. There's passive reference to Peppers & Rodgers concept of image tribes - what happens when everyone's information and entertainment is personalized or filtered by agents, i.e. media effectively throwing up a mirror? Great for marketers, but it does have major socio-political implications. Turow has done a great deal of primary research interviewing people from all aspects of the business. 100% all beef.

This book is typical of many text books; dry and confusing. The material is presented in a dry and boring fashion. You will NOT want to read this book for any reason other than passing the insurance exam.
