Today, the study of regions is central to academic analysis and policy deliberation on how to respond to the rise of the knowledge economy. Regional Economies as Knowledge Laboratories illustrates how newer types of regional analysis - utilizing scientometrics, knowledge services measures and university networks, and concepts such as knowledge life cycles, experimental knowledge creation, and knowledge ethics - are leading to a perception that regional economies increasingly resemble knowledge laboratories.

In addition to these measures and concepts, the book features case studies and assessments of policies implemented to facilitate regional engagement with the knowledge economy, and a critique of `knowledge economy' as ideology. The importance of maintaining a balanced perspective in assessing the depth and reach of the role of knowledge in the market economy is also examined.

In this second edition, twenty-nine classic chapters have been revised and updated and twenty new chapters have been added to reflect how the field has evolved since the first edition of the Handbook was published in 1995. This landmark volume describes and analyzes changes such as increased immigration to the United States and new developments in theory and research related to race, culture, ethnicity, and language. It addresses new issues such as findings on the increase in the number of interracial children and the characteristics of children of immigrant families. The educational implications of new research and trends are also discussed.
The Handbook's forty-nine chapters are divided into twelve parts that clarify the meaning and boundaries of multicultural education. Topics covered include trends and developments, ethnic groups in historical and social science research, language issues, academic achievement, higher education, and international perspectives on multicultural education. The volume also offers comprehensive and balanced analyses of key controversies and debates in the field.

Something all Educators should have.......2000-04-03

James Banks and Cherry McGee Banks do a wonderful job of editing the material of serveral authors on various ethnic groups of the United States. The historical information regarding people of color in the US in education is accurate and thorough. The most compelling aspect of this reference is the contemporary information regarding education and minorities. All schools and educators should have a copy of this handbook to refer to when discussing or researching multicultural and /or diversity education. While there is no one book which has all the answers to multicultural education this is definiately a start.

Being a management research consultant, I am forced to read many books on Management. Most books these days are ego trips for overpaid executives. The reader seldom learns and never applies. This book is a teacher. It can be immediately applied to real problems or strategies. The book can be a management training tool for all young managers, and a refresher for older managers. It should get the award of the year for usefulness.

This is a guided journal with writing prompts to get out all of the really important matters in your life. There is alot of writing space which can be looked as good or bad depending on personal preference. I would have preferred a little less space and more prompts. This journal is simple and easy to get through and at times more than just a book with blank lines running through its spaces.

Missing a Bigger Picture.......2001-01-24

The book is a little heavier on the fill-in-the-blank structure than others of its kind. Once I filled in the blanks, it left me asking "Okay...and then what?" There were no follow-up questions to help you explore any particular revelation any deeper and no 'summary' kind of exercises that tied a series of filled-in blanks together for a bigger picture. It felt like something was still missing.

Robyn Conley-Weaver literally 'weaves' emotion and words. She inspires the reader by reminding him of his own power and once he recognizes that it is there within, she shows him how to use it to his best advantage. The stories and exercises in this book are magical. They will release you from whatever dark place you may currently find yourself. I highly recommend this book--even if your world is all rose color glass.

Worth the Trip.......2000-12-10

Robyn Conley-Weaver's book reminds me of the time I backpacked through Europe just after college. Sure I enjoyed the sights in Paris, Milan and Amsterdam, but if I were really honest with myself, I'd say the most important things I learned on the trip were about myself.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO ME is both compelling and inspiring. A must read for anyone who has ever striven to be a better person--and it's a bargain compared to the price of a Eurail pass.

I suppose you can get one or two useful ideas from this book, but mostly it's very basic, and also quite dated information. There is practically nothing here on internet research either quantitative or qualitative. This may have been an ok book for the novice 10 years ago, but not today. Better to save your money.

A Fine Book From a First-Rate Marketing Researcher.......2004-04-30

Alan Andreasen has written a terrific, readable little book which reveals a lot of marketing research for what it is: too expensive, too ethereal, or not actionable enough.

Instead of piling one more tome on that over-crowded table he unveils a host of inexpensive research techniques that managers can do, whether they wear the robes of the marketing research priest or not.

Better still, depending on your grounding in marketing, "Marketing Research that Won't Break the Bank" is either the Rosetta Stone or the "Joy of Cooking" of cost-effective marketing research.

If your marketing background is limited, then Andreason deciphers the code. Part one of the book, comprised of the first four chapters, is especially valuable in helping you to think like a rational marketer. Can marketing research that's within reach help lead you to a cost-effective decision? Andreasen teaches you how to think about it based on clear reasoning. And chapter four, called 'Backward Marketing Research' delivers on its promise of helping you to design cost effective research that can lead to an informed decision, instead of more marketing who-ha.

If your background in marketing is stronger, then what Andreasen has written is a cookbook, although it's not the Easybake Cookbook. In chapter 10 Andreasen dares to use the words 'statistical analysis' and 'multivariate,' the warp and woof of most modern marketing research, although he does a good job at taking the sting out of them.

The meatiest part of the book, chapters five through 11, includes page after page of actionable ideas, all meant to be within reach of even drum-tight nonprofit budgets.

There are plenty of pertinent examples, including those from and for the nonprofit world. Andreasen has studied and written often on nonprofit marketing. His "Strategic Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations" written with Phil Kotler is well worth reading, too.

All that said, Andreasen is an academic, a professor of marketing at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. And although his writing is much more approachable than many in the professoriate, "Marketing Research that Won't Break the Bank" isn't beach reading. I wouldn't try and read it in bed either. Instead, find a nice hard chair and some good strong light, open the book and learn from a first-rate marketing researcher.
