Life Saver.......2005-09-11
I needed to take my MAT earlier than I originally expected in order for my scores to make it to the grad school I was applying for on time. With the help of this study guide, I passed the first time.
MAT review.......2005-01-31
Good book, a little too basic if you are aiming for the 99th percentile, add Sternberg and Budd for completeness. Good art and literature section, good vocabulary list. Inadequate for history. Do all the practice tests, pace yourself during the exam, it's difficult but you will do better than you think.
Typos.......2004-02-20
Typos, typos, typos.
Sitting Bull was a Lakota, not a Dakota!
Good but watch out for errors.......2003-12-10
This is good book to use as a review and to take practice tests but there are errors. I have found several. It usually pertains to the letter given as the correct anwser; Example page 35 #2. There are others like this so watch very closely when grading your test.

A must read.......2007-02-06
If only every parent, teacher, school administrator and government official would read this most insightful book! Our children would be smarter and happier - period. Project CHILD, the program described in Joyful Classrooms, is the most timely and promising tool for TRUE educational reform that I've ever seen. Just check out the testimonials in the book!
A must read for every educator, parent and school administrator.......2007-02-06
This remarkable book is a "how to" guide for fixing all the ills of elementary and middle schools (with extrapolatons for secondary education as well).
It provides a specific method of engaged and engaging education with proven results. Whether Title One (impovershed) public schools, afluent private schools, children wth special needs, gifted programs, charter schools or simply "typical" kids, this book proves that "all children are above average", if we just provide a rich learning environment where they can shine.
The book shows how re-arranging classrooms so that three teachers, working as specialists in the three subject areas of math, reading and writing, teach the same children over a three year period. Dr. Butzin calls this "triangulated learning", and results in schools across the country, but especially in Florida, where her non-profit Institute for School Innovation is based, prove its outstanding success. Test scores are significantly higher, yet without "teaching to the test". The children are measurably more "on task" and motivated. Disciplinary referrals are almost non-existent. The book describes how teachers who were on the brink of burning out, owe their careers to the ideas in this very readable book.
But wait, there's more. Dr. Butzin, who developed Project CHILD when she was at Florida State University, provides specific, practical suggestions for how children can have fun while learning. Consequently, it's a great tool for parents.
Last, the book provides a saga of Dr. Butzin's own frustrating experiences as a teacher, champion of children and opponent to the "be quiet, sit straight, desks in a row" education that typifies schools that haven't changed very much in 150 years. She makes a compelling case that unless we turn around this failed system, America will produce a population ill-prepared to face a competitive world.
Must-read for elementary school reform.......2006-03-14
This book describes Project CHILD, the most successful elementary school curriculum project ever. Based on depth research and subjected to many objective evaluations, this plan for reorganizing the elementary school should be considered by every educator in the world. Yes, it's that important!
This innovative plan uses team teaching, multi-year groupings, and multiple learning formats, including "appropriate" use of technology. It adds up to a package that is both educationally powerful for students and cost-efficient for administrators. And teachers love it because it produces, as it says in the title, joyful classrooms.
As someone who has been following school reform for over 40 years, this is the real thing! It is do-able and it is sustainable.

Great for the novice project manager........1999-06-18
This book is great for people suddenly finding themselves managing a project. Because PM tools are presented in the context of every-day scenarios, it's easy to get the "feel" of how these tools are useful. The book is entertaining as well as informative. Since I also enjoy cooking, the recipes and cooking tips were a nice side benefit of the book.

Book Description
Little things mean so much. Add a little trim to bed linens, tuck a simply-tied ribbon rose at the base of a cake, wrap sheer ribbon around a flower vase: these are just a few of the clever ideas offered by author Mary Norden to personalize your space and show others that you care. Illustrated with colorfully evocative photographs, Ribbon Details includes eight step-by-step projects, demonstrates five classic bow styles, and displays hundreds of ideas, colors and types of ribbon-from frothy sheers and plush velvets to ingenious wire-edge and fanciful tassels.
From trimming bed linen and hanging pictures to creating attractive table settings, there are innumerable ways of decorating with ribbons. Novel window dressings, ribbon tassels, unusual gift wrapping and beautiful decorations for cakes and flowers are just some of the many inspirational ideas included in this delightful little book.
The first chapter Ribbons in the Home has ideas for using ribbons all around the home, including trimming lampshades and curtains. Ribbons for Festive Occasions is full of inspirations for using ribbons for celebrations, including table and chair swags, bow wreaths and cake decorations. Finally, Ribbons and Flowers covers posies and buttonholes.

Book Description
How did Denmark avoid a macro-economic catastrophe in the 1980s and 1990s and still manage not only to maintain but also expand its welfare state? Denmark's macro-economic troubles apparently derived from a number of vices identified by critics of the welfare state: it had an enormous, thoroughly unionized, and unresponsive public sector; large numbers of people relied on the state for their livelihood, making programatic cuts politically difficult. The taxes necessary to sustain this welfare state suppressed investment, eroding both fiscal and current account balances. Yet by the mid 1990s, public support for the welfare state was as high as ever, while fiscal and current accounts were essentially in balance.
The analyses in this book suggest that most of the vices that traditional welfare state scholarship identifies are also virtues. This book presents a comprehensive picture of how the Danish welfare state and political economy works by looking at the governance of and interactions between the welfare state and economy at all levels, using analyses of general macro-economic policy, center-local relations, budgeting, labor market, and welfare state transfers and services in three critical areas. A critical introductory survey of the welfare state literature and a synthetic conclusion frame these studies.
This fine-grained analysis shows how alleged weaknesses were actually strengths that allowed a negotiated adaptation of the Danish model to external and internal changes. This sheds light on the future of the welfare state and economic governance in a globalizing world, and the complementarities and synergies between economic and welfare state governance.

Book Description
Since it's publication in late January 1997, Tough Calls has gained unprecedented attention for a book in the selling category. By taking "the opposite approach of most books on selling in print," Tough Calls has added new ideas and perspective to the subject of selling. Most books on selling focus on the behavior of the salesperson (i.e. how the salesperson answers objections, closes, etc.) Tough Calls focuses on the (challenging) behavior of customers and how to deal with it.

Some Ideas For Selling Tough Customers.......2006-03-08
This is a bit of an amatuerish book but was fun to read. The book attempts to deal with the 'problem client' which makes up one out of every six customers. The book does well identifying the six most common problems and the five most stressful customers, even if this is based on a short survey of only 1000 hand-picked salesman that weren't asked open-ended questions but given a short checklist. I found the author's answers and solutions to these problems to range from insightful to childish. I liked this book however because it made me think and gave me a few ideas. One idea deals with complainers. Get them to complain about your competitors and their bosses and you may actually get some valuable information.
Four Stars on a Clear Night
Insightful!.......2001-04-20
While most books about selling focus on the salesperson's behavior, this book focuses instead on the client's behavior and the sales approaches you should use depending upon just how weird or annoying - excuse us, that should be "challenging" or maybe "eccentric" - the client becomes. Josh Gordon clearly and effectively presents 20 different classic, difficult behaviors, including everything from "The Client Who Lies to You" to "The Client Who Knows It All." Gordon offers useful strategies for dealing with such personalities and situations, strategies that can help you make your sale and then make a clean getaway. The book is written conversationally and includes no filler or fluff, just plenty of well-organized and helpful ideas. We [...] recommend this book to anyone who has to sell a product, service or idea, because sometimes it is nice to know that you aren't the problem.
Practical advice.......2000-09-07
Found "Tough Calls" to be excellent and filled with street smarts. Unlike most sales books, this one is filled with real world issues faced by today's salesperson. We all have problem clients. This book effectively tells us how to recognize them and deal with them. The sales world is a challenging place today. You need this book to succeed. It has helped me immeasurably.
It works!.......2000-08-07
I manage a sales staff and bought a copy of "Tough Calls" for each of my sales staff. We have all read it and refer to it often. Now, when a problem cleint comes up we start talking about it as a "Chapter 7" or a "Ch apter 11". "Tough Calls" is great stuff and represents new thinking!
I was disappointed..........1999-07-08
I must say, it encouraged me to write my own book. It didn't really have anything new (as usual).Same re-hashed stuf. Bla bla bla.. yada yada yada... When it comes to telephone sales, no one comes near Stan Billue. He is the master.

Second Acts is a guide to reinventing your life. Through a series of exercises, you will develop a comprehensive "script" for your second acta step-by-step action plan that will lead you to the life you've always wanted.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring, Wise, and Creative.......2007-07-10
It is obvious that the author lives on positive energy. This text motivated and inspired me every time I flipped the page. I think it was well structured, and the exercises were well-conceived; they really helped me internalize the information.
Essentially, this book is about how you can have a second career, or even a third. It also explains why you would want to, it empowers you to believe you can, and provides a few kicks in the pants for those of us who need it.
Stephan Pollan created a second act in his own life before writing this book. He is Michael J. Fox's father-in-law, so he has observed Fox's second act blossom. And he also went out looking for other examples of people who have successfully pulled off a second career. Therefore, this is not a fluffy book pulled out of the author's imagination...or pulled out of anywhere else. This is a practical and inspiring guide based on the experiences of many.
Opening Closed Doors.......2006-07-28
There are many books on life planning. There are many books on reinventing a life. I keep coming back to this one as a gold standard among the many instruction manuals out there. It's simple. It's well-written. The examples are clear. There are no gimmicks. The authors encourage introspection and self-reflection without making this seem scary and they offer simple guidance in indentifying and obercoming obstacles. This is one of a handful of books that I've used myself and highly recommend to my coaching clients.
In Transition? Thinking About Quitting? or Retiring?.......2006-06-02
Better read this book. Whether you are leaving a job to go to another one or thinking about hanging it all up, you ought to spend $10 and get this book.
I like a book where the author has actually had "fate" push him into the abyss and he had to figure out how to climb out of the darkness. This author lost his a good job thru no fault of his own, had a bout with TB (and was happy because it wasn't lung cancer), had no savings (alright how he had no savings is beyond me - but I am sure Mr. Pollan covers this in another book and will keep you from making the same error)and had to start all over. He tells you how he started all over, where he "wanted to go" and where he eventually wound up.
The author is sincere, honest, humble and writes like a person talks (which is always a good thing because it makes you feel he is sitting right next to you).
If you lost your job and are not sure what you want to do - pick up this book. The book provides ideas and I think more importantly a roadmap to uncover or discover what you want to do now that you're all grown up. BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, is the book gives hope, a sense that there is a future and that things will and can get better - as soon as you decide to.
Another good book is some of Brian Tracy's books especially his two books Maximum Achievement and Change Your Thinking and You Can Change YOur LIfe. These two books are similar to what Mr Pollan discusses around the way you need to think, and how you can control your destiny.
My best of luck to you in your search for happiness and peace and success!
Superficial, irrelevant, and irritating.......2006-03-24
Let's see - I graduate from law school at age twenty, work as an attorney, a real estate developer, venture capitalist, and a banker over a span of about thirty years. Then I get sick and am out of work. When I am ready to return to work, I, through a large network of past contacts, just happen to get a job teaching college courses, which leads to writing books and appearing on national TV shows, and which, in turn, leads to forming consulting businesses including life coaching. And, of course, my advanced degreed wife takes a well-paying job at a magazine as a cushion. Then I hold myself up as an example of how the typical person can launch a second career and put it all in a book, SECOND ACTS. So the reader learns early on that the author cannot distinguish the irrelevant from the situation of most attempting to make a career change. Furthermore, it is an irony, which the author little sees, that he did not depend on the exercises that he recommends to others in finding a second career. He actually stumbled into most of what he calls a second career. Is that the real message: get lucky.
Of course, what would a self-help book be if it didn't have any number of exercises that must be followed to find a second career. First of all, one is to write about their dream: passions, strengths and weaknesses, interests, needs, and the specific dream. And then there are the typical obstacles of which one must be cognizant: age, money, duration, consent, location, physical condition, education and training, timing, esteem, fear of failure, fear of success, and fatalism. There is a subtle message here that failure to launch a second career may be due to your failure to overcome these obstacles - like they are not really obstacles after all.
This is the wrong genre to look for a realistic description and assessment of the world of work and training and education for it. If employees were actually empowered and if students could get educated and trained without tremendous amounts of extraneous hoop-jumping, perhaps all of these books about how to deal with work and workplace unhappiness would not be necessary. Issues such as obsolescence and downsizing could be dealt with realistically taking into account the interests of all parties. Changing the content of one's current job would be possible.
Chances are those who are doing what they absolutely love: painters, writers, wood carvers, etc aren't reading this book. For those who have struggled in the world of work, the typical self-help platitudes are here. Their help is doubtful. The author can hardly change workplace realities. When careers or jobs are changed, there is a very real possibility of experiencing the same limitations as before, just in another guise.
Adding to the irrelevancy of the book - the author insists on adding numerous mini-biographies of celebrities which have absolutely nothing to do with finding a second career as most would understand the concept. Furthermore, those writing a serious book on general employment need to keep their personal lives out of it. If one wanted to read memoirs, one can find plenty.
Go Ahead, You Can Do It!.......2005-10-10
Pollan taps into an almost universal wish -- to be doing something else for a living. His strength here, as in his previous books, is to be a cheerleader. Everyone wants to be told, "go ahead, you can do it," and Pollan tells us just that.
Since he defines Second Acts so broadly (a couple who decide to buy a second home in the country, for instance), nearly everyone can be considered a candidate for a Second Act. He outlines the steps you should take before taking the leap. Decide just what it is you want and don't want, determine what financial and family support you will need, etc. By making an orderly exercise out of it, it seems more attainable.
Pollan is good at organizing us and putting a positive spin on doing something that is risky and frightening for most of us. I have to disagree with him on one point, and that is asking family members for money. He says that your family wants you to be happy, and if they were planning on leaving you money in their will, for instance, you should tell them you need it now. Or, if you don't have willing and wealthy grandparents, ask siblings or parents for a loan. This sounds like a mistake to me, but maybe Pollan knows better. It would also be nice to have a summary of the steps at the end of the book.
If you are thinking of a Second Act (and who isn't), you could probably figure out Pollan's steps on your own, but it's nice to have them organized for you with a friendly mentor cheering you on.

Not what I expected.......2006-04-07
This book is not what I expected. Many of the cakes are ice cream cakes, which I wasn't interested in and I wasn't forewarned about. I was looking for a book that would give me easy to follow instructions, on easy to make cakes, in cute themes. There are maybe 3 cakes I would consider using and they won't be easy. So overall this book was a big waste of money. I think I'll be better off using my own creativity.
Customer Reviews:
Bond's Lear.......2005-03-22
The overriding mechanism of the play is an image, a radiantly English image, of society as a mechanism or consuming beast, it consumes Cordelia as head of state, it destroys Lear as contrary to its purposes. He gives the simple understanding of the situation in the great third act: "If a God had made the world, might would always be right, that would be so wise, we'd be spared so much suffering. But we made the world--out of our smallness and weakness. Our lives are awkward and fragile and we have only one thing to keep us sane: pity, and the man without pity is mad."
He's mad, of course, or call this a moment of lucidity before the end. Within the structure, Bond skillfully handles material from Kafka ("The Great Wall of China") and Frost ("Mending Wall"), tending toward Eliot's "Marina" in Act Two. The writing is sparse, the action is dramatic, until Act Three blooms into Lear's parable, Kafka by way of Charles M. Jones: "A man woke up one morning and found he'd lost his voice. So he went to look for it, and when he came to the wood there was the bird who'd stolen it. It was singing beautifully and the man said `Now I sing so beautifully I shall be rich and famous'. He put the bird in a cage and said, `When I open my mouth wide you must sing'. Then he went to the king and said, `I will sing your majesty's praises'. But when he opened his mouth the bird could only groan and cry because it was in a cage, and the king had the man whipped. The man took the bird home, but his family couldn't stand the bird's groaning and crying and they left him. So in the end the man took the bird back to the wood and let it out of the cage. But the man believed the king had treated him unjustly and he kept saying to himself `The king's a fool' and as the bird still had the man's voice it kept singing this all over the wood and soon the other birds learned it. The next time the king went hunting he was surprised to hear all the birds singing `The king's a fool'. He caught the bird who'd started it and pulled out its feathers, broke its wings and nailed it to a branch as a warning to all the other birds. The forest was silent. And just as the bird had the man's voice the man now had the bird's pain. He ran round silently waving his head and stamping his feet, and he was locked up for the rest of his life in a cage."
Not Solomon in all his glory was arrayed by such a commentator. The Bard in this bleak, warlike world makes himself known by an untoward cruelty or a jest for groundlings, in a line or two. Gunplay replaces the swordfight. The main point of departure is the rapprochement of Cordelia and Lear, who sit as spies on the whole lot in indeterminate time and space.
The Author's Preface argues in Bond's voice the image of the play, and reveals an eye for "the caricatures that pass for strength in our society--the hysterical old maids who become sergeant majors, the disguised peeping Toms who become moralists, the immature social misfits who become judges."
The Royal Court Theatre was able to mount the play in 1972 with a large cast, and Harry Andrews as Lear. The Royal Court is not what it was, Bond is out, and the Guardian headlined a 2000 interview with him (saying the very same things), "Still bolshie after all these years" (the subhead is "Playwright Edward Bond tells Brian Logan why he knows better than Sam Mendes, Trevor Nunn and the rest of theatre's A-list").

Book Description
Precious in Her Father's Eyes is an exceptional love story between a severely disabled baby and her family. Heartwarming and inspiring.
Can you imagine your child born blue, unable to breathe or produce a heartbeat? Imagine being told by experts that the child you longed for will be permanently, severely brain damaged for life?
Precious in Her Father's Eyes begins with a mother undergoing an extraordinary spiritual encounter. In the midst of her anguish, the words, "everything is going to be alright" inspire faith and emotional reassurance. These words give the mother endurance as she searches for the people and institutions that can heal her daughter. These same words take on an unexpected meaning on the day of her daughter's death. The search, carried out with stubborn persistence and sincere faith in God, leads the reader on a roller coaster of experiences; horrific, comedic, and heartwarming.
Precious in Her Father's Eyes reveals how in the midst of a horrible situation, the best parts of our human selves can be drawn out--our intuition, our spiritual gifts, and our ability to sacrifice ourselves and surpass our limits.
Precious in Her Father's Eyes enables us to share in the lives of real people who are willing to live by the convictions of their hearts and who joyfully affirm that every life is valuable.
Customer Reviews:
Difficult Subject, Wonderful Book.......2001-05-06
As someone who has fostered a severely brain-damaged child, and who has spent a year working in a classroom for the severely and profoundly handicapped, I appreciated Cindy's candor as well as her viewpoint in writing about this sensitive subject. She consistently emphasizes what many people don't see about caring for these little angels -- that being required to give deeply of ourselves is a blessing. The book is written with tenderness and a mother's love, and also with humor and hope, and is a good read (though it's necessary to keep a box of tissues handy).
