Book Description
The author of Other People's Children joins with other experts to examine the relationship between language and power in the classroom.
The Skin That We Speak takes the discussion of language in the classroom beyond the highly charged war of idioms and presents today's teachers with a thoughtful exploration of the varieties of English that we speak, in what Black Issues Book Review calls "an essential text."
Edited by bestselling author Lisa Delpit and education professor Joanne Kilgour Dowdy, the book includes an extended new piece by Delpit herself, as well as groundbreaking work by Herbert Kohl, Gloria Ladson-Billings, and Victoria Purcell-Gates, as well as classic texts by Geneva Smitherman and Asa Hilliard.
At a time when children are written off in our schools because they do not speak formal English, and when the class- and race-biased language used to describe those children determines their fate, The Skin That We Speak offers a cutting-edge look at crucial educational issues.
Customer Reviews:
Satisfied Customer.......2007-01-12
I am very satisfied with the quality of the book and the expedience of the delivery.
Showing your race/sexual orientation/socioeconomic status/culture by the way you speak........2005-10-01
An interesting look at differences in language -- accent, vocabulary, and dialect. This book explores the judgements that people, even young children, make when they hear a voice. Well-rounded and very pragmatic about solutions. Doesn't just say 'Oh, people shouldn't judge each other.' Because, like it or not, we do.
Language and the Classroom.......2005-03-31
The Skin That We Speak, by Lisa Delpit, is a collection of essays written by various authors about the impact of language in the classroom. The author identifies the purpose of the book as the exploration of "the links between language and identity, between language and political hierarchy, and between language and cultural conflict." The book is divided into three sections starting with an individual inward look into languages, a examination of the consequences of language attitudes in the classroom, and finishes with a look at the language of teachers and what they need to know to become effective in the classroom. The author titled the book, The Skin That We Speak, because "just as our skin provides us with a means to negotiate our interactions with the world - our language plays an equally pivotal role in determining who we are." For each of us our language becomes intimately connected to our identity.
Overall, this was a good book. Because it was composed of so many short essays, it made the book easy to divide into sections and read it quickly. The essays were all very well written and easy to understand the authors' purpose and its connection to the book. IT contained a nice mixture of personal stories, research, and even some ideas that could be directly used in the classroom. I think that it would be an excellent book for all teachers, new and old, to read. It opened my eyes to all the different aspects of the English language that I never realized existed and how those aspects can affect all students in my classroom. It has caused me to reflect on how I use language in my classroom on a daily basis. This book has allowed me to realize how all students can struggle with language issues in so many different ways, and how we need to be sensitive to it as classroom teachers.

It helps to know who you are.......2002-07-09
As a leadership coach, I am constantly on the look for additional reference material and Tom's book proved to be a great resource. The Despard Performancy Type Test was an excellent starting point to help me understand myself a little better, but more importantly understand how I could be a better me.
Tom's book is somewhat like a Reader's Digest version of many books - I appreciated his down-to-earth, common-sense approach to "knowing how we work".
It's definitely a very needed book and one that I totally recommend.
A gold mine!.......2002-04-20
Tom Despard is a man with tremendous business experience and a knack for sharing important practical advice about business success with others. This book is a very helpful tool for understanding how to be your best at work. I don't know another one quite like it. I enjoyed it a lot and I recommend it highly.

Help Yourself Work Smarter!.......2002-04-07
Despard lays out a clear path to a better understanding of how to manage your career by working with what you have. If you've ever taken a personality test and were left wondering how to actually use what you found out - Despard's idea is to meld the personality test and work advice formats into one useful book. There's a performance type test included that guides you through your type - leader, learner, innovator, manager or promoter. And advice about how to overcome your weaknesses and enhance your strengths. This is a practical book that enabled me to take a good look at how I work and how I can work smarter.

Book Description
Explaining the Economic Success of Singapore explores the transformation of Singapore in the last three decades, going beyond the conventional explanations often accepted. The book argues that there was more to the transformation than a simple `right place, right time' scenario as other developing countries benefited from similar multinational corporation investment and political stability but did not achieve the same success. Johnny Sung illustrates what differentiates Singapore from these other similar countries.
This book argues that both neo-classical economic theory and early versions of the developmental state theory have contributed little to understanding the nature of worker participation in Singapore's `miracle growth' period. By developing a complementary concept - the developmental worker - the book examines the socio-political context in which workers became central to the national growth strategy and its skill formation projects. It further argues that one of the most important achievements of the developmental state is its ability to systematically embed the skill formation process through building innovative worker stake-holding while explicitly recognizing the importance of social commitment for economic growth.
Providing important lessons for workforce development policies, this book will appeal to workforce development policy-makers, researchers, academics of labor studies, Asian studies and political science, as well as consultants advising on workforce matters.

Customer Reviews:
This is a great step by step to branding.......2007-04-03
Most often people see the result of branding, but this book takes you behind the scenes and takes you through a great step by step guide to branding and how to go about the process. They have great examples that you can relate to, and it is definitely a fast read.
Excellent guide for beginner to advanced branding experts.......2003-12-15
"Before the Brand" is an easy to read guide on the multiple levels and nuances of branding. Anyone starting or positioning their business for the future should read this book! This information will save you time, money and accelerate your business growth.
This Book Demystifies the Branding Process.......2003-12-11
I've read a number of books on "brand development" and have found most to lack substance and practical application in business. Before the Brand is founded on credible strategy and gives step-by-step instructions on the art of brand development, whether it be for a personal brand identity, a new or existing business enterprise or a new consumer product. The case studies gave me valuable insight into the process used by major companies while framing the information in ways I can actually put to use in my business.
This is one of those rare business books I'll keep on my shelf for frequent reference.
Need to know more about branding?.......2003-12-11
Although my post-MBA career started in branding, I have been away from it for several years. Reading this book hit the spot. The book gives a very concise, easy-to-read overview of branding. It includes excellent examples of what both product and service corporations have done to succeeed - and how others have missed the mark.
Specifically, pages 24 - 25 talk about how to get started. It is detailed enough to have a meaningful impact, without becoming obtuse or overwhelming. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to understand the power of branding. Readers can most certainly benefit from the author's experience.
Not really delivering the answer........2003-05-22
I thought this book would tell me the amino acids that build a brand - all DNA is built from just 4 such acids and I hoped that there was the same Watson & Crick insight - sadly no.
It has some good building blocks but you are largely left to assemble them yourself.

Customer Reviews:
There are no problems.......2006-04-24
I, too, do not believe that problems actually exist. All are just challenges with opportunities for growth and advancement. Great concept and a book worth reading. Mr. Taylor suceeds in this book. Highly recommended.
Try a New Approach.......2005-04-06
When a problem is viewed as an opportunity, the solution to that problem will somehow materialize in a number of positive manifestations. However, when your belief is that the problem is a "problem," the only relative solution is to find fault with the problem and engulf your mind in the miseries and woes to which unresolved problems inevitable evolve. ~Scott T. Taylor
Scott L. Taylor presents his ideas in a story or parable-style format. His belief is that you should view problems as solutions instead of problematic considerations. What he seems to be saying is that we should view problems as opportunities to improve our lives instead of allowing the problems to destroy our lives.
The author lets the reader decide and doesn't really list any solutions and problems in particular. The last chapter has a list of mistaken beliefs, although I'm not sure why "You believe you have to solve your own problem" is a mistaken belief. The second item is "You believe you can't solve your problem." Which is it? I think we all have to solve our own problems. Even this book is saying that you solve your problems by viewing a problem as an opportunity for growth.
~TheRebeccaReview.com
The Opportunity in Every Problem.......2002-04-08
Mr. Taylor has done an excellent job in illustrating how the right approach to a problem can actually transform an obstacle to an opportunity for growth and success. Don't let the simplicity and straighforwardness of this book fool you! The concepts outlined here are vital to anyone who wants to develop and hone their skills to the next level in their business life or their personal life.
Right to the point!.......2002-03-22
Mr. Taylor has hit the nail on the head! His book is a quick read and right to the point, which puts it miles ahead of other books in its class. Through metaphorical teaching, Scott plainly shows the recipe for success to all who will read it.
Great book!
