A Graduate Student's Best Friend.......2007-09-10
This is an excellent,well-written guide for graduate students. It fills in all the information the average committee fails to tell the student. If a student follows the text, he or she should have a successful experience; consequently,I have recommended this book to numerous students. I was particularly happy to see the section on dealing with problem committees or problem advisors. I edit theses and dissertations for a living, and every other one comes from a student with a bad advisor.
Not a good general guide for writing a thesis.......2007-07-30
Regarding the other reviewer's review of this book, I AM in the social sciences field and yet I still feel that this is not a good reference for everyone. I concur that the book markets itself as a "general" guidebook, yet it spends a great deal of time detailing how to go about selecting your committe, which is rather irrelevant for me as my thesis advisor is selected by my university. I agree with the notion that the book is just too specific. It's probably a good resource for someone that is in the field of edcuation (I'm not...I'm in psychology)at a "traditional" university where you will be putting together a committee and choosing which professors you want to work with on educational research. If this doesn't apply to you, don't waste your time on this book.
The first few chapters there was some useful general information, so I give it 2 stars. However, from that point on I, like the other reviewer, stopped reading the text because it became apparent it was no longer relevant for my Master's thesis. Also, the book again markets itself as a guide for a thesis or dissertation, but there is a noticeable bias towards those in PhD programs writing a dissertation. The authors should retitle the book: "Writing the Winning Dissertation in Educational Research in a traditional university setting where you are able to select your thesis committe: A Step-by-Step Guide." This would be more accurate and honest!
Not for Everyone..........2007-02-17
My problem with this book extends from the fact that it advertises itself as a general book about writing a thesis. From its description the authors of the book would have you believe that this book is for everyone in any field. In actuality, this book has an extreme bias towards the social sciences and humanities, most notably education research. If you are in one of these fields this book is an excellent resource for you, and I recommend it to you. However, if you are in a science or engineering field, like myself, than this book will be of no help to you. I bought this book to help me with my thesis believing that it was a general reference. I received this impression after reading both its description and table of contents on Amazon. When I actually got the book, I realized its extreme bias very early on but kept reading attempting to extract useful information from it. The more I read, the more I was disappointed. It details things such as "problem statements," "research participants," "research methodology," "ERIC: Education Resources Information Center," etc. and omits any information relevant to a thesis in the sciences or engineering. When reading the book I finally came across a section on detailing your research instruments. This confused me greatly as when I read it instantly thought of the measurement equipment I used in my lab when I read the phrase research instruments. I went so far as to ask people I knew in the social sciences and found out that the author was referring to items such as surveys used to collect data from study participants in social science research. It was at this time I stopped reading the book because it was very clear to me that it had no application to my field and the book itself was a complete waste of my time and money.
I'd like to take this opportunity reiterate that my negative review stems from the fact that this book masquerades itself as a general reference guide. This is no doubt an act of dishonesty. From my perspective I have been lied to and cheated. I do highly recommend this book, however, if you are in one of the fields it is written for. If you are in the sciences or engineering like myself, than I highly recommend the book "Enjoy Writing Your Science Thesis or Dissertation!: A Step by Step Guide to Planning and Writing Dissertations and Theses for Undergraduate and Graduate Science Students" by Elizabeth Fisher and Daniel Holtom. I bought this book after giving up on the one detailed in this review, and have benefited greatly from the information it has conveyed.

Truly a Step-by-Step Guide........2004-08-29
As the title suggests, this book is truly a step-by-step guide for writing the dissertation from beginning to end. Glatthorn's use of sections to breakdown the dissertation, or thesis, writing process; short and easy-to-read chapters, illustrations, and examples make this book not only user-friendly, but an excellent resource for managing the dissertation project. Readers should find the thorough explanation of research designs and subtypes, as well as the presentation of typical questions to be expected during the defense to be particularly helpful.
There are only a couple of areas in the book that could use some fine-tuning. First, Glatthorn does not present the discussion of writing style until halfway into the book - after the discussion of writing the proposal. Second, instead of interweaving the topic of problems encountered during the dissertation process into the appropriate chapters (e.g. problems with committee members), he instead chooses to present this information at the end of the book. He even acknowledges that you may want to read these chapters out of sequence.
Although written with a slant toward graduate students in education at traditional colleges and universities, individuals enrolled in nontraditional (e.g. distance education) graduate programs will find the information in this book to be invaluable. It offers straightforward reading and uncomplicated instructions for "writing the winning dissertation". In fact, this text appears on the recommended reading list for my distance education graduate student clients.
Writing the Winning Dissertation: A Winning Guide!.......2002-07-18
Writing the Winning Dissertation was the only guide I needed when writing my dissertation. After I completed my research study and began to try to pull my data and research information together in a cohesive manner, I was at a loss. This book led me step-by-step through the process. The guide is straight-forward and easy to follow. It explains exactly what you need to include in your dissertation and describes the order in which the information should occur. For me, it was a lifesaver!

Good Introduction for the Beginner.......1998-09-12
A nice overview of production and operations management with numerous real-world examples. Unfortunately, it could have been written in many less pages and could have given more details in their case examples. On several examples they simply stated that company "x" uses this method and save "x" dollars, making them "world class." I think the authors could have gone into a little more details about the strengths and weaknesses of many of the methods and equations they present. Although I critical of how it could have been better, it is very readable, which is very commendable on a subject that can be extremely boring to read. Good introductory book!
One of the best books I have ever seen on this matter.......1997-04-16
An incredible well documented and written book although several references to magazines like Business Week are not correct.

Customer Reviews:
Creative Cloth Doll Making.......2007-09-29
Wonderful book and the dolls are just beautiful. These dolls are unusual with the latest savvy! Not your usual Raggedy Ann's. Includes dolls made by many cloth dollmakers and their perspective of their design which is wonderful reading. Excellent patterns and ideas! I highly recommend this book.
Not for the beginner .......2007-09-27
I guess I wasn't paying enough attention, but I thought I was buying a book which would improve my rag doll making. These cloth dolls are NOT rag dolls, they are rather strange and exotic art/craft pieces. Like a previous reviewer, I am completely unable to find the materials used,so can't get to try the patterns to see if they are do-able. (OK, I do live in a very remote place, but so do lots of people who enjoy crafts.)
Having read the instructions closely several times, I find that a lot of techniques are not explained - there is an assumption that you have a sophisticated sewing machine and are familiar with a lot of sewing, dying and printng techniques. Explanations where they are made do not seem to me to be very clear.
I find most of the dolls rather creepy looking, and despite the fact they are made by many different people, they seem to me to be all stamped out of a similar mold. I guess this just wasn't the book I was looking for - but it is none the less beautfiully illustrated and I am sure that I will be able to use some of the ideas - for example, for designing faces - in my more humble rag doll making.
Not quite as impressed as I'd hoped.......2007-08-13
The other reviews for this book were so glowing that I thought this was the end-all-beat-all of doll-making books. It's not that it's bad. The process is just a lot more complex than I hoped it would be. The dolls are beautiful, but I was hoping for more variety. The first doll--the beginner level doll--requires lots of dying of fabrics. Pima cotton--the basic ingredient of almost all the dolls--cannot be bought anywhere (the large fabric store I usually shop at didn't even know what it was) except online or at the referenced locations in the back of the book. I would have appreciated some alternatives. I'm in the process of making the beginner doll, but am making a lot of alternations to simplify the process. Maybe that's not a bad thing, but sometimes it's nice to have directions for a simple first project, with easily purchased materials, so that you can see if you want to continue.
Creative Cloth Doll Making.......2007-05-15
Wait till you see this book! I'm now collecting all kinds of silky threads and materials for my dolls and theres so little you need to make these wonderful dolls from this book. You won"t be able to put it down till the end of the book. Just alittle lace goes a long way. And of course Amazon is the best place to get these books.
Creative Cloth Doll Making: New Approaches for Using Fibers, Beads, Dyes, and Other Exciting Techniques.......2006-12-02
This is a wonderful book with so many beautiful ideas. Very informative with a lot of creativity.
Book Description
Start with a bejeweled goddess made from an easy “napkin” fold. Then try Pamela Hastings’ angelic “Clarity” doll, Arlinka Blair’s “Kuba Spirit” dressed in bold African textiles, and others. “Go beyond what you usually think of as cloth dolls and create a wonderfully imaginative collection of figures.”—Doll Castle News. “A good buy for large public libraries and textile collections.”—Library Journal.

Excellent primer for art dolls in fabric.......2004-06-01
I made the mistake of buying an art doll magazine while out on an "artist date" not too long ago. As if I didn't already have enough projects going in many different directions, that got me hooked into the fascinating world of art dolls. These are not your standard Raggedy Anne dolls!
Ms. LeVan has provided a great resource to start dabbling in the world of art dolls if your medium of choice is fabric, as mine is. She provides three basic designs, each quite different. A pattern that will need to be enlarged is provided within the pages, and directions for the construction of the basic design are included. The directions are quite thorough, but do require some basic sewing knowledge, although this only needs to be "basic."
The fun is seeing the variations of each design done by several well known doll artists. They really show that though each design is very simple, with imagination, the artist can enjoy making each doll unique. There is also a gallery of special project dolls using a variety of techniques, with instructions for these as well. If that isn't enough to inspire, a photo gallery is included to provide more inspiration.
I have already made one of the basic dolls, "Energy," adding my own touches to the design. I found the instructions to be very easy to follow and enjoyed working with the design. The size is just right for anyone who is participating in a round robin doll project, keeping postage costs down.
If you have been intrigued, as I was, by the art doll movement, this book is a great starting point from which to join the movement.
i loved this book.......2002-11-30
wow.. the talent showcased in this book is amazing!! such creativity and inspiration!!

Book Description
* An entirely original and imaginative slant on brand management
Book Description
A cliche it may be but we are living in ever more turbulent times. Business decision-making has become more challenging and unpredictable than ever: we see unforeseen and often cataclysmic changes in consumer demand, both at home and in export markets; customers continue to demand more, more quickly and for less; new laws and regulations abound; competitors steal loyal customers; and, increasingly, the advice that once could be found from a 'Small Business Adviser' has been replaced by a call centre. Hand in hand with these challenges, the risks associated with expansion, or a new strategy, have grown significantly. In the context of a small business, where a manager has not necessarily had the breadth of experience of someone in a larger organization or formal management learning, they can seem extremely daunting. This book addresses the issues confronting managers/owners of SMEs by providing practical, jargon-free advice on which a SME can create a sound platform from which to prosper.
* Uncomplicated and jargon free to appeal to the SME director or manager who has little time to read
* Can be used as a continuous read or a source of ides for dealing with the day-to-day problems of running and growing a small business
* Based on the practical experience of the authors with examples taken from consulting practice
