5 out of 5 stars Useful for Contact Info.......2003-03-09

I bought this book simply for the list of potential employers it contains and found it to be a great resource for browsing employers in different categories. It contains web addresses, street addresses, short descriptions of what the company does, and all the companies are divided into different categories such as "Accounting and Management Consulting" or "Real Estate".

The only part that I found to be a joke is at the very beginning, concerning how to conduct a job search. The instructions are so general that they are useless and the cover letter and resume examples are only mildly useful. More importantly, information like that is already readily available in better and more detailed format on the internet, so they could really have just saved some paper and left this part out.

The bottom line is that this book is a crucial reference guide for companies you could be applying to that you didn't even know existed until you got this book. Since it narrows things down to one metropolitan area instead of a region or the nation as a whole, it allows the author to list even more employers for this specific city and with even more detail.

A must have if you are doing a focused job search!

        Book Description

What do teachers need to know in order to teach well?  How important is the depth and quality of teachers' content knowledge as a critical aspect of their ability to teach?  How can teachers best be educated, and how can we assess their accomplishments as teachers? In what ways is the professional preparation of teachers comparable to the preparation of physicians and other members of learned professions?  What kinds of educational research can provide deeper understanding of teaching, learning, and the reform of education? These are just some of the many questions answered in this landmark collection of Lee Shulman's best work. A pioneer in the field of teaching and teacher research, Shulman's work and thinking have long influenced teachers and researchers. But while Shulman is one of the most widely cited scholars in education, his writings have been scattered among a variety of books and journals—until now.

The Wisdom of Practice at last makes Shulman's major works on K-12 education and teacher education available in one volume. His interests in teaching of all sorts—in K-12 schools, in teacher education, in graduate programs for educational researchers, in liberal education—have been diverse. The essays included touch on such wide-ranging topics as the psychology of school subjects, medical problem solving, teacher knowledge, performance assessment, teaching in higher education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, the characteristics and pedagogies of the professions, the role of cases in professional education and research, and the character of relevant and rigorous educational research.

            Book Description

This book investigates how small firms in developing countries acquire technological capability--the knowledge and skills required to operate technology effectively and to adapt it to local conditions. It fills a gap in the established literature on technological capability, which has neglected the small-scale sector in spite of the important role it plays in employment generation. The focus is on the capital goods industry, where technological learning in small firms makes an important contribution to technological progress. In addition to reviewing the literature, the author develops an original methodology for a quantitative assessment of the learning process, using case material from a field study of small-scale farm equipment producers in Pakistan's Punjab Province.

What do the Atlanta Braves, Microsoft, 3M, Nike, and Intel all have in common? According to Shona Brown and Kathleen Eisenhardt, authors of Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos, each of these organizations are predictably unpredictable. They're leaders not because of their ability to predict the course of their markets; rather, these companies have learned to embrace the notion of change. They're successful because they've learned to find that edge between structure and chaos that allows them to be innovative and creative, while maintaining just enough discipline to focus on executing a plan.

The authors contend that competing on the edge is not an efficient or predictable way to do business. Instead, it's learning how to adapt and lead in a business environment that's in a constant state of flux. "The underlying insight behind competing on the edge is that strategy is the result of a firm's organizing to change constantly and letting a semicoherent strategic direction emerge from that organization. In other words, it is about combining the two parts of strategy by simultaneously addressing where you want to go and how you are going to get there."

Brown and Eisenhardt offer dozens of examples of companies that are successfully and not so successfully finding that balance between anarchy and order. If, on the one hand, you feel like your company is bogged down by rules and bureaucracy or if,on the other, it seems like no one in your company knows exactly what they're doing, you'll find that Competing on the Edge is a valuable handbook for change. The book is clearly written, full of insight, and belongs on every manager's bookshelf. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

            Book Description

Unstable markets, fierce competition, and relentless change are the only certainties in today's chaotic business world. In their startling new book, authors Brown and Eisenhardt contend that to prosper in such volatile conditions, standard survival strategies must be tossed aside in favor of a revolutionary new paradigm--competing on the edge. To compete on the edge is to relentlessly reinvent, and it's the only way to navigate the treacherous waters of tumultuous markets.

Competing on the edge is an unpredictable, sometimes even inefficient strategy, yet a singularly effective one in an era driven by change. It requires charting a course along the edge of chaos, where a delicate compromise is struck between anarchy and order, to the edge of time, where current business is the primary focus, but actions are shaped by past legacies and future opportunities. By adroitly maneuvering through chaos and time, managers can avoid constantly reacting to nonstop change and instead set a rhythmic pace that others must follow, thereby shaping the competitive landscape--and their own destiny.

In the first book to translate leading edge concepts from complexity theory into management practice, each chapter focuses on a specific management dilemma and illustrates a solution. Linking where do you want to go? with how will you get there? here's a bold and surprising strategy that works--when the name of the game is change.

5 out of 5 stars Predicting the Future is Easy, Being Right is Hard.......2007-02-17

One of the things I found most objectionable back in MBA school or today in reading/writing business plans is the orientation towards thinking that all those beautiful numbers predicting the future had any meaning whatsoever.

If you think fancy long range planning makes sense, just go ask the American auto manufacturers what went wrong. We've known that oil is getting in short supply, that its source of supply is in an unstable part of the world and that something drastic will have to be done. So what do they do - build more factories to build pickups and SUV's.

Where are the fuel efficient diesel engines? (My daughters Volkswagon diesel from 20 years ago got 42 miles per gallon.) Where are the hybrids? (Oh, they are manufactured in Japan.)

The computer industry learned to think in terms of rapid change a long time ago. (Those companies like DEC. Honeywell, RCA, GE and many, many more are defunct or out of business.) You would think that a book like this one would concentrate on the computer business. To some extent it does, but it also talks about companies like 3M, Nike, the San Francisco Symphony, the airline industry. It also talks about companies like Sears.

This book cannot give you specific advice about what the future holds, but you can make some guesses - energy costs are going to go up, global warming is going to cause water levels to rise (a bunch), overseas competition is going to go up, we may see a major religious war. How will your company react?

5 out of 5 stars Fresh View of Strategy.......2003-03-12

As a business school student I have covered a plethora of theories and frameworks regarding strategic analysis, planning, and development. Brown & Eisenhardt provide a fresh look at strategy. Competing on the Edge provides the latest thinking on emergent strategy and succeeding within high-velocity industries. Regardless if you are in industry or the classroom, this book is a must if you ever plan to drive strategy at the business level-no matter what the pace of change is in your industry. This book will teach you to think in new ways about how you create, manage and defend competitive advantage. This read will take you far beyond Porter, Mintzberg, and Barney.

5 out of 5 stars Ten rules of competing on the edge.......2001-05-17

Shona L.Brown and Kathleen M.Eisenhardt's book is dynamic and major break from traditional static approaches. "Competing on the edge contrasts with other approaches to strategy that assume clear industry boundaries, predictable competition, or a knowable future...The underlying insight behind competing on the edge is that strategy is the result of a firm's organizing to change constantly and letting a semicoherent strategic direction emerge from that organization...A semicoherent strategic direction is fundamentally different from what is traditionally called strategy" (p.7). Here, they ask, "What is unique and even provocative about it?":

            * It is unpredictable. Competing on the edge is about surprise.

            * It is uncontrolled. It is not about command and precision planning by senior executives.

            * It is inefficient. Competing on the edge is not necessarily efficient in the short term.

            * It is proactive. Competing on the edge is not about passively watching for the occasional discontinuity or waiting for other firms to move before taking action.

            * It is continuous. It is about a rhythm of moves over time; not a set of disjointed actions.

            * It is diverse. Competing on the edge is about making a variety of moves with varying scale and risk.

In this context, they write that "the premise of this book is that change is pervasive. The implcation is that the key strategic challenge facing managers in many contemporary businesses is managing this change. The challenge is to react quickly, anticipate when possible, and lead change where appropriate. A manager's dilemma is how to do this, not just once or every now and then, but consistently. Our book has argued that competing on the edge is the unpredictable, often uncontrolled, and even inefficient strategy that nonetheless defines best practice when change is pervasive." And,then, they list ten rules of competing on the edge that articulate the key assumptions and best practices about strategy, organization, and leadership that they have found to characterize firms that compete on the edge:

            I- Strategy

            Rule 1. Advantage is temporary.

Rule 2. Strategy is diverse, emergent, and complicated.

Rule 3. Reinvention is the goal.

            II- Organization

Rule 4. Live in the present.

Rule 5. Stretch out the past.

Rule 6. Reach into the future.

            Rule 7. Time pace change.

            III- Leadership

            Rule 8. Grow the strategy.

Rule 9. Drive strategy from the business level.

Rule 10. Repatch businesses to markets and articulate the whole.

            Highly recommended.

If you are looking for a gift for a needleworker, either yourself or someone you like, consider buying this book for them. It is a beautiful walk through the history of needlecrafting from the Renaissance (mainly in England), and it has beautiful pictures and an engaging text. The reader will have a better understanding of how the needlearts effected all aspects of material culture in the periods considered. Here needlework is treated as a long continuum of women's interests and knowledge, along with the variations that made eachperiod unique. Great for history buffs, too!

I only wished for more graphics of her source material. Think this book would interest any needleworker who also loved to read English history (in spite of the title, it's mostly about England). Whenever one looks at history from a unique POV, in this case needlework, one's understanding is deepened. It could also be subtitled: "How rich women wasted time".

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations, but hard to follow.......1998-11-04

Thomasina's book is full of beautiful illustrations, examples, and photos, but it is rather hard to read. There seem to be no clear cut examples or divisions between the different embroidery ages, except the chapters themselves. I have found myself going back and saying, "Now what made the Stuart embroiderers distinctive?" I only wish that there were some sort of summary at the end of each chapter to clarify each 'age,' because there is so much information mentioned in each chapter. There were also items and names mentioned throughout the book that needed further clarification, such as the history of a sweetbag. Where did that come from? As I said before though, it is full of beautiful illustrations and could serve as a helpful guide in designing reproduction patterns. It would also make a good coffee table book.

                  Book Description

This is the first history on the subject of foreign investment in the United States since 1920. It shows how the United States changed from a debtor nation to a supplier of capital to the rest of the world, and then details the structural shifts to this creditor position after the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system in 1972. Geisst demonstrates that the United States has always been a magnet for foreign portfolio and direct investment. Traditionally, this has come from northern European or Canadian sources, but in the 1970s the Japanese became a major force. Currently, both types of investment in the United States are at historically high levels, but Geisst asserts that this foreign interest exerts a positive rather than a negative impact on the economic climate. This study is a counterpart to the author's earlier examination of domestic investment in the United States, Visionary Capitalism: Financial Markets and the American Dream in the Twentieth Century. It will be of interest to scholars and professionals in finance and investments, business history, and American history.

                    Book Description

Two-thirds of rapid-growth firms use written business plans, according to Price, Waterhouse, Coopers 1998 Trendsetter Barometer. The survey also states that firms with written plans grow faster, achieve a higher proportion of revenues from new products and services, and enable CEOs to manage more critical business functions. How to Develop a Strategic Marketing Plan is both innovative and pragmatic in its approach. It explains how to combine the strategic vision of long-term business planning with the action-oriented thrust of a short-term marketing plan. A floppy disk - included with the book -provides planning forms and guidelines for customizing your own Strategic Market Plan (SMP). Actual case histories - from companies such as Campbell Soup, Co., Texas Instruments, Inc., and Quaker State Corp. - illustrate how business-building opportunities translate into strategies and tactics. They demonstrate the compelling relationship between internal organizational functions and external market conditions, the long- and short-term strategic marketing issues and the advantages of developing an SMP. Strategic market planning shapes the future of business. In its broadest dimension it sets in motion actions that impact long term prosperity. How to Develop a Strategic Marketing Plan gives you the tools to generate a credible strategic marketing plan so your organization can survive in the 21st century.

                    Book Description

Rather than present decision making strictly as a quantitative science, this text views it as a multidimensional process involving values, psychology, sociology, social psychology, and politics. Using a process model—a focus on the process of a decision rather than the outcome—the book presents a variety of perspectives useful for making and evaluating decisions in all kinds of organizations.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of decision theory.......2004-03-29

I purchased this book to help me finish an project for my MBA. It has been extremely helpful in providing a clear synopsis of current research on decision theory. It is well-written and covers both quantitative and qualitative models.

The best part of the book are the case studies in the final chapters that cover The Cuban Missle Crisis, the Chrysler bailout, and EuroDisney. These are excellent applications and make the theory understandable.

One failing of this book has been that it does not go into game theory methods. It simply lumps them into quantitative methods and dismisses them as overly simplistic. I think that some treatment is necessary since they are such a buzz-word in the business world.

I teach a decision making course for undergraduates. After searching numerious books for my class, I came across The Managerial Decision Making Process. While other books outlined the various models used in decision making, this was the only book that detailed the human considerations we bring to the process. Regardless of the decision making model we use, there are underlying behaviors we must be aware of if we are to make quality decisions. Harrison effectively presents numerous aspects of the process including input from the fields of psychology and sociology and the impact of political power.

This was the most comprehensive and thought provoking book on decision making I have read. Of the three books assigned to this course, this is the one students preferred.

Harrison has, undoubtedly, the definitive collection of theory, philosophy, and case examples around this most simple and difficult of tasks -- the decision, and does so in a scholarly and yet no-nonsense way. It is a book which certainly no business library should be without ...

A complete guide to making outsourcing work for your company

As leading companies worldwide have discovered, delegating responsibility for strategic functions such as IT, sales and marketing, and manufacturing to outside vendors often leads to improved quality, increased efficiency, and added value for companies and their customers. Now, in this first comprehensive guide to outsourcing, expert Steven Bragg provides the practical information corporate decision-makers need to take full advantage of today's outsourcing opportunities.

Outsourcing provides expert guidance on every crucial aspect of outsourcing. It covers all recognized organizational functions, including accounting, IT, customer service, sales and marketing, engineering, manufacturing, clerical, administration, maintenance, and more. Drawing upon his experience as an outsourcing consultant, Bragg closely appraises the benefits and risks involved in outsourcing any or all functions and provides detailed, easy-to-follow guidelines on:

Outsourcing is an indispensable guide for all managers interested in taking advantage of one of today's most valuable business resources.

                            Download Description

Originally used simply to save money, outsourcing is now expected to benefit companies in areas such as quality improvement, increased efficiency, cost control, added value, and fulfillment of customer needs. However, outsourcing can also result in a loss of control and in-house expertise and dependency on an outside vendor. This book closely examines all of these issues, helps companies make informed decisions about whether and what to outsource, and advises how to ensure peak performance, both in- and out-of-house. This practical guide covers determining which functions to outsource, selecting suppliers and monitoring their performance, the impact of outsourcing on a company's strategic and financial position, and more.

They can say its a new edition or its been updated, but the fact is that this particular outsourcing book is best borrowed.

We researched many books on the subject and this one has been around for awhile. Its basically one chapter reproduced several times for different departments but the insight is far from ground breaking. I advise you look at the current leaders in outsourcing book sales and get some newer information and innovative ideas.

On a positive note, if you have never had any exposure to outsourcing before, this book may meet your needs.

Over half the book is the same information with small changes, chapter by chapter. More current info is available on the internet.

Absolutely worthless book. An attempt to make a guide for all possible outsourcing situations -and as a result it gives few ideas and nothing really useful.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Very Topical Subject - Outsourcing.......2001-01-04

                            This is a great book to understand Outsourcing, why you need it, when you need it and how to do it successfully. The book guides you through;

                            (1) The Advantages and Disadvantages of Outsourcing. (The basic rationale of the decision) (2) Contract-specific issues. (Legal, strategic impact, etc) (3) Transition issues. (Employment contracts, timelines, personnel) (4) Creating Control Points. (So you know what's going on) (5) Measuring the outsourced function. (Milestone events and performance tracking) (6) Managing the outsourced function. (Show optimal management type for every function) (7) Potential customer service issues. (Also applies to Internal Customers, the employees) (8) Getting out of the outsourcing arrangement. (You need to put it in the contract)

Interestingly enough, every function can be outsourced, either partially or completely. (Yes, even YOUR job!). Take a proactive approach. Buy the book, absorb the knowledge and be part of the solution rather than the problem. In addition to being an excellent author, Mr. Bragg "walks the talk". He's not an academician telling us how things could be but rather an experienced professional who understands how things work in the real world. A rare talent. You need this book. Rated A+++

From the author: Findings are presented from an exploratory field study of the decision processes employed during crisis response. Decision process maps of 15 crisis response events are analyzed, resulting in the generation of nine researchable hypotheses offered to direct future research efforts. In the studied crises, decision makers relied heavily on the sequential evaluation of non-competing ready-made solutions, crisis response decisions were made largely through personal judgment due in part to a lack of monitoring capability, and response activities were largely slowed by waiting for feedback about the impact of previous actions. Crisis management plans appeared to reduce the steps required to make critical crisis response decisions (even a plan written for a dissimilar event). Findings from several studied crises suggest that a triage heuristic and use of external experts may be used to guide crisis response decision processes.

From the author: This study uses 226 arbitration cases published by the Bureau of National Affairs and the Commerce Clearing House to examine the impact of drug testing on the arbitral decision-making process. Contrary to the intuitive notion that drug testing procedures can confirm alcohol and drug use and thus improve the chances that management will win the arbitration, our findings suggest that the presence of drug testing does not significantly impact arbitral outcomes. We also find that drug testing is used more frequently in cases involving illicit drugs than in those involving alcohol. Finally, the arbitrators' applications of the tests of just cause were not affected by the presence of drug testing in either alcohol- or drug-related cases.
