Comprehensive but readable.......2007-09-17

This book was required reading for a seminar. It is very easy to read, but it also contains a lot of good information. I was particularly taken with the Practitioner's Corner at the end of each chapter with suggestions for using the information provided within the chapter inside the classroom.

The title of this book pretty much spells it out: Dr. Sousa explains how brains learn. Considering the subject, the text is very readable--enough to recommend this book to anyone who wants an understanding of how we are able to retain information. It covers the entire gamut, from the basics of biology to the subtler aspects of the active mind.

Still, this is really a book for educators. At the end of each chapter are a number of "Practitioner's Corners" where Dr. Sousa describes methods of applying this information in the classroom. Most of these are quite clever and very practical. This book should be on the reading list of all teachers, would-be teachers, and parents.

This book is an excellent resource for educators. It is easily adapted to classroom use no matter what level is being taught. Great insights to hemisphere preference, transfer, critical thinking, teaching strategies. Even the biology and physiology is palatable. This book would lend itself well as a resource for inservicing teachers with its many practioner's corner activities. I recently read Jensen's Teaching With the Brain in Mind and, while I found that book to be a good one, this book if FAR more useful. Every teacher will find easily adapted activities to put to immediate use. Highly recommended.

This book goes into enough detail to thoroughly cover production planning and control without becoming monotonous or redundant. It has been very helpful to me as a new Production Planning Manager. I will look for other titles by this author.

This is not a book that can give you an advanced level of information on Manufacturing. You will find it very useful if you are not familiar with Manufacturing process, and trying to understand the process and concepts associated with Manufacturing quickly.

Not the Best Book.......2000-03-19

This is definitely not the best book I've read on Manufacturing. The preface and preview pages tell the reader that this book was especially designed and written for independent study, but I found the text confusing and poorly edited. New terms and concepts are introduced without explanation. Mistakes are everywhere. Even working the exercises at the end of each module left me feeling that I had missed the point of the chapter. A novice will get something from this book, but only if they really work at it. And even then they may be more confused than when they started.

Best reference book on manufacturing.......1997-10-28

Outstanding book on the basics in manufacturing . Very easy to read. Strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Manufactuing.

Book Description

Return migration is one of the least studied areas within migration research, although it has major implications for both sending and receiving societies. The importance of the phenomenon is shown by the fact that more than 50 percent of the immigrants who arrived in Sweden in 1970 had returned after 20 years. This book deals with return migration from Sweden by immigrants from the major non-Nordic sources of immigration in the period 1968-1996. Using longitudinal micro-level data, the study provides a detailed analysis of the immigrants' migratory behavior. The results show that return migration to a large extent is determined by economic factors, such as individual income performance and the economic circumstances in the home country relative to Sweden.

The deteriorated labor market situation for immigrants has led to an increase in return migration by highly skilled migrants, but not increased return migration in general. An important conclusion is that economic marginalization does not explain return migration. Regarding refugee immigrants, the decision to return does not only depend on the political situation in the home country; it is also highly dependent on economic circumstances. Different economic opportunities in Poland and Chile after democratization in 1990 explain the large differences in return migration to these countries.

Easy to Read and Fulfills Its Purpose.......2005-03-18

This book, Provocateur, does an amazing job at what author Cortese calls "deconstructing" advertising. He describes the dominance of men, the portrayal of women and many images promoting the continuing prevalence of prejudice in society of minorties. It evaluates the cause and effect of these portrayals and also addresses the "why". It calls to attention advertiser's drive to sell a product or idea. Sometimes, it does both. Cortese knows his stuff and lets you know it in this book. Great job at breaking it down and keeping the concepts separate. One of the previous reviews says it was confusing, ... might be the teacher, not the acclaimed book.

Is there an editor in the house?.......2005-02-19

I teach culture studies at a university in Taiwan and thought that this text might be appropriate to supplement the unit on images and popular culture that will be part of my seminar next semester. So, I ordered it. I must admit that I was staggered by what I found, almost from the start. I've rarely seen such a mess. The media review on this site mentions this work's potential as a textbook; I urge teachers to look elsewhere. Despite the impressive array of examples of advertising, the written support behind them is sometimes almost incomprehensible, with frequent (almost violent) changes in direction, highly questionable assertions about human nature, and just plain illogical trains of thought which frequently omit any pretense to transitions. I ran some of the passages by colleagues just to make sure that I wasn't off-base--but it wasn't long before they were scratching their heads, too. Think twice about buying it.
I am revisiting this review and think that I could add a star to the rating I gave it. I still can't give it any more than that for reasons stated above, which I basically still stick to. But, to be fair to the examples collected by the author and the basic list of things to look for (sort of a checklist of common problems to pay attention to, the book may be worth a look to some. Check it out from your library.

Good, but there have been better.......2003-07-25

Provocateur is a good introduction into the world of cultural studies as they relate to media depictions of women and minorities, especially African-Americans. Cortese goes over all of the basics about visual analysis of an image and the psychology used to construct ads so that the untrained eye doesn't pick up on the discrimination, but the message still gets sent.

This is a great book for an undergrad in cultural studies who needs a reference when talking about ideas in media analysis that seem almost common sense but still need to cite someone with a Ph.D.. It's also a great book for someone who's interested in media analysis, but not enough to take a class.

I would also recommend Berger's "Ways of Seeing" which does a good job of explaining a concept known as "The Gaze" which is integral to the analysis of women in visual representations.

It's also the best I own all of them and let me tell you this is a good buy. I bought it in the marketplace for $3.77, most places want to sell it for over $30. The way the pictures are laid out in the book it's as if the photographer is telling a story w/ pictures. Amazing, absolutely amazing.

JFK and Jackie were two incredibly photgenic people.......2006-07-23

After over forty years, the JFK mystique is still with us, tempered and expanded over the course of time. There are two main themes that strike you when reading this book. The first is that in the initial stages of his campaign for President in 1960, JFK did not generate a great deal of interest. He toured the primary states and in some cases addressed very hostile crowds. In other cases, it was a misnomer to describe his audience as a crowd. However, he persevered and by the end of the campaign the crowds to see and hear him were enormous. His was the last successful presidential campaign that began at the bottom and was not carefully orchestrated with the aid of political handlers.
The second main theme is how incredibly photogenic John Kennedy and his wife were. Not only were they beautiful people, but they were people whose good looks survived the often-harsh reality of the camera. While some of these pictures were posed, most were not and yet both of them still maintain a certain regal quality. Pictures with a small amount of explanatory text cannot truly do historical justice to the Kennedy presidency. However, this book is literally and figuratively a snapshot of his presidency and therefore is of historical interest.

The text are complete, and there are a lot of rare and cute photos. The book tells about Jack, Jackie and bobby so it's great. I suggest it too all Kennedy fans. I enjoyed it.

This book is for children,adolescents,adults,nurses,social workers,school councelors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and Doctors, as well as the general public. This book tells a story about the writer,with humor and also medications are listed. There is a chapter containing the names of famous people that are or have,in the past been Bipolar. There are several pages of web sites to go to for more information and over all, the book serves to educate the public on mental disorders and for answering problems in the workplace for Bipolar People and the Mentally ill. I have heard that the book is selling well in several countries in Amazon stores.There is a section on addictions as well.The index tells you about the humor, as well as a serious look at Bipolar issues, and I highly suggest that the customer be aware that this book is not meant to cast a funny look at the disorder but to offer healing and recovery.
One chapter called We're not in Salem any more Toto: chastises the people that refuse to learn how to help the Bipolar and the Mentally ill. I hope that this helps. five stars!
