Customer Reviews:
Inspirational.......2005-09-07
"The Eleven Commandments of Good Teaching" was easy to read and full of down to earth practical advice. Undoubtedly, new high school teachers will find Vickie Gill's advice based on her own experiences helpful. As a veteran teacher, I found the message of "focusing on the students and their needs" to be inspirational.
An Inspirational and Practical Pep Talk for Teachers.......2004-06-18
Reading this book made me excited about being a teacher. Gill's ideas are so practical and so ... USEABLE. In fact, after reading each chapter I'd have to get out a notebook to write down the many tips suggestions I didn't want to forget. I have highlighted or underlined passages on practically every page. As a young teacher, I utilized as many of Gill's suggestions as I could, and it made teaching a great deal more enjoyable because I felt like I was prepared -- I was armed with her tools -- I could handle everything that came my way.
If you are a new teacher you must get this book! It will help you as much or more than all the teaching courses you ever took in college. If you are an experienced teacher who needs a pep-talk to reinvigorate your enthusiasm about your profession, this book is also for you.
I found the chapters about organization and classroom discipline especially helpful.
I have also seen Vickie Gill present her strategies at a seminar. She is a funny, down-to-earth, and dynamic speaker. If your school has a lot of young teachers, or if the faculty needs a shot in the arm, get your administrator or school district to bring Gill in to inspire your teachers. She is a terrific mentor.

Book Description
Contemporary Advertising, 9e, is one of the best-selling advertising texts in this field. Known as the “coffee table book” for Advertising, it is known for its current examples, the author’s ability to pull from real-world experiences, and the clear writing style. Taking a comprehensive view of the industry. This text presents advertising from the creative stand-point and Arens draws from his own industry experience to lend life to the examples. Author Bill Arens continues to address the importance of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) in the field of Advertising and how it impacts advertising strategy through featured examples of IMC campaigns.
Customer Reviews:
Contemporary Advertising.......2006-08-15
This is not only contemporary, but comprhensive. An excellent text that covers the range of history that leads to today's form of advertising, showing what has worked in the past, the present, and through the ages.
The text has excellent explanations of specific campaigns. Examples such as the rise of Mountain Dew, and how it became the strong brand today from the original drink mixer for moonshine is but one such example.
The text covers workflow and patterns that are unique to ad creation and leads the reader through the process through detailed copy, real world examples, and finished products.
Perhaps one of the suprising chapters is the production techniques. Too many come out of school with what they think are the goods on good advertising, but missing the boat on production and the inhereint limitations and production efforts involved. While not a how-to, the text certainly explains the processes.
The text goes into great length about how different forms of media use advertising. Radio is to Billboards as print is to televison, so the various sub types, buying patterns, influences and importance of each is well covered.
Overall a great resource for the classroom as well as some catch up reading for those confined to one form of media when branching out. This should be in every agency's library.
Excellent.......2005-10-01
It is a great book, and the service to receive it was excellent. It arrived when when it was suppose to and in great condition!!
Ok.......2005-07-07
It took long time to get the book, but I got the book finally
Contemporary Advertising with PowerWeb and CD-ROM.......2002-11-12
It would be nice if the glossary on the CD-ROM went along with the book - makes learning confusing. It would also be nice if ther was a uniform code of terms that went along with my other marketing classes. I had to ask my teacher what we were going by - the book or the CD-ROM terms - teacher says to forget the CD-ROM - also, I bought it used so I didn't recieve the card with details on how to get into the website.
Great book, but wordy.......2001-07-01
Great reference for marketing communications from advertising to sales promotion for new comers to the field. Good resource for small businesses as well. Outstanding examples throughout the text. Very readable, but could be more concise.

Book Description
The first book to get at the root cause of India's problems
India is a country of enormous contradictions. On the one hand, India is one of the fastest-growing leaders in the new economy, with burgeoning technological prowess and a myriad of exciting business opportunities. At the same time, it is burdened with enormous poverty, a crumbling infrastructure, and a labyrinthine bureaucracy. This book by one of India's leading executives, discusses the country's recent economic transformation and addresses key issues that will not only affect companies investing in India but individuals struggling to cope with these changes. Using techniques of scenario planning and organizational learning, Maira guides the reader through the complex structures of Indian business and society and introduces a new approach to change certain to ignite debate.
Customer Reviews:
Coping ideas for a country that isn't likely to change.......2002-08-04
Although this book doesn't say it, it is really about why business investment flocks to China but is wary of India. What has gone wrong-and right-since India undertook a series of drastic economic reforms due to a reserves flow crisis in 1991? And if India has changed so positively for the better, why does investment in China exceed investment in India my many multiples?
India is a modern industrial state, yet lives with ancient roots that still encourage a timeless vision of life in which values of several thousand years ago shape much of today. As with China's, India's sense of collective history is a formidable force. It underpins religions, languages, class, caste, and the strong remnants of socialist attitudes from Gandhi and Nehru eras. Despite millennia of conquest and colonization, India has kept its sense of cultural continuity virtually intact. Indians have a knack for absorbing useful ideas (like software development) while discarding unwanted ideas (such as accountability in government) like so many saris on the rag carts of history. Every attempt, whether generated within or by transnational entities, to change India into something else has failed. Village life remains very much the same as one reads in the great epics of thousands of years ago. Even in the fast-paced modern cities like Mumbai and Delhi, beneath the facade of with-it popstyles are age-old obligations and symbols of loyalty.
Arun Maira's Shaping the Future is a case study in the surprising fact that business leaders are the most idealistic and reform-minded people in India; it is the godmen, the politicians, and the bureaucrats who hold the country back. Yet India lacks not for due diligence: Watch a laborer digging a ditch with a pick and shovel in the heat of the late afternoon sun and you will never again think the Indian worker of being lazy.
Yet China still sucks in the bucks. Why?
For one, India is a minefield of contradictions. It is way ahead of China in self-generated technological prowess-Mahatma Gandhi imprinted his message of self-reliance well-and about equal with China in encouraging entrepreneurs (especially women) to discover and exploit business opportunities. Yet it also groans under horrific and seemingly intractable poverty, a brobdingnagarian bureaucracy, a fault line between the relatively efficient central government ("The Centre") and dysfunctional, erratic, wasteful, nepotistic, and in some cases monumentally corrupt state governments.
Chapter 5 is arguably the best in Mr. Maira's book, due in large part to the richly detailed case examples he draws upon to make his points. In sum, his message is how to plan and use leadership techniques such as scenario planning to improve organizational leadership. Chapter 5 introduces the complexities of Indian business and society; the rest of the book is devoted Mr. Maira's solutions. Roughly speaking, and rephrasing, his message is this:
Each of us sees the world through a unique set of lenses ground by our personal experiences, responsibilities, and interests. None of us, individual or group, sees reality in its entirety. This fact is reinforced in business structures which organize employees, tasks, and responsibilities into pyramid structures (hierarchies) in which everyone is so preoccupied with their niche arena they tend not to see the company as a whole. Only the top leaders pay much attention to whether the company's products or services are customers really want.
Myopia except at the top leads to a selective rather than collective sense of vision. Hence marketing managers are psychologically attuned to increasing market share; they tend to focus their budgets on sales and promotion at the cost of developing new products. Accounting managers aim to maximize profits by minimizing superfluous expenditure, usually at the expense of product quality and promotion. Production and design managers want to allocate their budget to product development and manufacturing processes, ending up with market-forward products and great prices with insufficient money left to notify the customers. Such blinkered vision is the result parochial, imbalanced leadership. In poorly led companies it reaches into a company's top management; one sign of it is management occupying itself more with organizational planning than with success planning.
Mr. Maira does not stint on examples to support his views. Chapters 3, 5, 7, and 9 are filled with examples both from the real world and the worlds of metaphor and scenario. Chapter 7 might be called "The Metaphor Chapter" because Mr. Maira draws on so many unorthodox-even startling-real-world examples in which to plant his thesis. His drawing business leadership notions out of the diverse worlds of music is a classic in transcultural thinking.
And what is his theme?
* Most organizations are loathe to restructure completely-the painful errors made during the "Reengineering the Corporation" era of the mid-1990s has made everyone twice shy. Yet many senior managers still chafe under the fact that their firm's management structure fosters progress-stifling behavior. If there is a solution to this, they want to know what it might be. Mr. Maira proposes that leadership training become a core element in the firm's culture.
* If an organization wishes to adopt a "strategic alignment" approach to achieve its management objectives, the prospective leaders themselves must devise the environment within which the alignments can best function. The emphasis is on the word "themselves" for true leadership comes from within.
* While hierarchical management retains responsibility for deciding which ventures are to be undertaken, they must lead by to allocating specific projects to particular teams and defer to these teams in the matter of how to reach the preset objectives; i.e., keep their spoon out of the pot.
* Leadership by coaching and mentoring rather than pyramid-structure authority leadership should be built into the firm's organizational structure rather than relying on classroom-type instructional models.

Book Description
This ground-breaking book by international experts on all aspects of food production, farming and animal welfare shows that there is an alternative to intensive farming of animals or genetic engineering in order to feed the world. The alternative, which is healthier for humans and kinder to animals, involves not devoting enormous resources to the production of meat, subjecting animals to often appalling treatment and creating both unfair food distribution and a poor diet. The contributions challenge the entire system of agriculture and the food market, asserting that animal welfare, human welfare, and the welfare of the planet go hand in hand.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth a second look.......2002-11-21
I am usually very conservative about giving very high or very low ratings, but this book surely deserves it more than anything else I've read. I got this book thinking that it would be a lovely introduction to some reasonable explanations for becoming vegetarian. Boy, was I wrong. Supposedly, this book gives the two sides of the vegetarian debate (i.e. hippies and meat industry moguls) a chance to meet and talk about the differing reasons they believe they are right. It is a wonderful idea which loses everything in the execution. In the entire first half of the book (whose second half I declined to read) there were all of two footnotes. Not a single claim of either side's evidence had any substantial (read, non-partial) support. This book is aimed at idiots who cannot tell the difference between what other idiots say and a well-thought out argument citing researched statistics. Unfortunately, neither side was up to the task of actually founding their arguments in anything other than propaganda. Naturally, as a result we end up with the most biased and unfounded set of arguments as possible. No wonder so many people steer clear of this argument--with twats such as these authors on either side, I would too (that is, if I didn't already know which side is right).
terrifying account of the dangers of anthropocentrism.......2000-08-10
This is a horribly depressing book for anyone who cares about the future of this planet. In one of the most optimistic essays, it's argued that the world faces 3 choices: grow GM crops en masse, destroy the world's remaining wildlife, or convert the entire population of the US to veganism. It's then pointed out that only 0.2% of American's are currently vegan. Another essay points out, even more terrifyingly, that third world countries are seeking to emaulate western patterns of meat consumption, with all the horrifying consequences this has for their environments and spiritual lives. Other essays provoke a Becketian laughter at the absurdity of the human condition; in one it's pointed out that the US spends more on weight loss products than any other nation does on food. The reasons for this anomaly are pointed out elsewhere; massive subsidies for the agribusiness industry which produce the illusion of "cheap" meat and global trade agreements that prevent countries from introducing animal welfare laws. The only possible cause for optimism is the hope that this book's ideas may be widely dissiminated and cause people to realise the danger that eating meat poses to their own health and to the future of the planet.
Well written multidisciplinary overview.......2000-05-19
This book gives an interesting multidisciplinary overview of the food / environmental / wealth problems we're facing which will probably only exacerbate, and possible solutions -- including a proponent of GenMod crops. No, this book isn't some extremist book stating "let's all become vegetarian!" (as the title may suggest), nor does it seriously draw on "sentimental" arguments. I feel this book makes us reflect on the whole issue, leaving us to decide ourselves. Recommended for anyone interested in "why it is necessary to reduce meat consumption" and a good overview anyway for the current state of affairs in this field.

OUTDATED INFORMATION - Dont buy this book!.......2005-02-18
I read this book and its from too long ago to help you. The information is very outdated and a lot of the rules it states no longer apply and have been completely changed. A better source of Savings Bond information, always up to date, www.SavingsBonds.com.
Again, unless you want to have to re-learn everything you know about bonds, dont buy this book!
Savings bonds are a great investment. This book proves it!.......1998-08-02
Instead of gettting a tiny 1.8% interest with your bank. This book proves the value of the world's most popular security, and how it really is a sound, safe and tax deffered investment. Most people do not realize bonds will earn interest for thirty years after their face value and have various interest rates.

Book Description
This collection of essays explores the ethical issues that arise when information technology seems to exceed and even contradict the purpose of its creators. The studies focus upon the management of information technology, specifically the Internet, considering the most ethical ways of generating, using, and controlling information technology in our time.
Section One includes essays pertaining to Africa's place in the 21st century, including democracy, information flow, connections with the world through the Internet, telecommunications, Uganda and the digital divide, and an examination of a pilot study in South Africa for developing a universal tool to measure information poverty. The essays of Section Two cover topical library issues, such as professional information organizations and their ethic codes, communicating ethics when teaching electronic research to undergraduates, pay-for-placement search engines, consumer health information services, laws applying to confidentiality of library records, privacy control after September 11, cybercrime investigation, and the technologies protecting copyright. The essays were originally presented at the "Ethics of Electronic Information in the 21st Century" symposium held at the University of Memphis on October 24-27, 2002. Each includes references and helpful Internet resources.

Book Description
Patrick J. Howell, a Jesuit priest, recounts his free fall into emotional and spiritual chaos. But he recovered from the breakdown with dignity and now uses his experience as an inspirational hope to those who are encountering mental illness.
Revealing his innermost thoughts of fears, doubts, and illusions, Father Howell describes the storm that he endured and how the healing powers of faith and psychiatry helped reduce his raging turmoil to a whisper.

confessional spirituality at its best.......2005-12-09
A confession of my own: I first read this book when I was a student of Pat Howell's back in 1986. I was curious about the story of a Jesuit priest who had made a "comeback" from severe mental illness. Nearly 20 years later, Fr. Howell is the outgoing Dean of the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. During these years, he has been a steady witness to the power of authentic faith in God and the support of a Christian community to the restoration of a soul to right relationship with itself, God and others. A wonderful book by a wonderful man, whether or not you ever have the privilege of meeting him personally.
