This art education book is wonderfully presented! After renewing it from the library for over a month, I knew that I needed to own a copy of this book. As an art teacher in a very new and growing facility, I found this book to be a wonderful form of continued education. It is helping me stay up-to-date on theories and practices in the early childhood art field and is helping me grow as an educator. The author offers practical advice as well as situational anecdotes in all categories of art education.

I highly recommend this book! I wish my professor had used it in college, I would have learned a lot more and been better prepared for what I am dealing with now!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended self improvement book.......2004-03-29

The worst thing about this book is that so many people will pass it by because of the cover design. The cover strongly suggests that it is another business development book. With a dollar sign and a subtitle of "Business Success and Inner Development Through High Performance Training, Self-Motivation & Warrior Spirit" it is easy to understand why. This classification could not be further from the truth. This is a very valuable self-improvement book that could help people truly change their lives. In fact, it is one of the best self-improvement books I have read in a long time.

Author, Charles Lambert, Ed.D. brings together current research on motivation, personality types, psychology, physics, and the martial arts into a cohesive whole to help the reader change their life. For each part he includes various exercises to illustrate the points and help the reader understand exactly what is happening. This is all organized into five "Modules" for the reader to work through to achieve the desired results.

The first module deals primarily with mental rehearsal and cognitive hygiene. Cognitive hygiene is his term for cleaning up the clutter in the mind related to negative self-talk. Dr. Lambert does a phenomenal job of describing the problem of self-talk and providing a positive, workable method of dealing with it. It is amazing that he can deal with this subject so well in just a couple of chapters when whole books have been written about it and have not done as good a job.

Module two is on focusing and concentration. Again, this is an excellent treatment of the subject and includes several exercises to help you learn better focus and concentration. The author's background in the martial arts shines through strongly here as he blends ancient focus philosophies and modern techniques.

Of the remaining modules, module three covers various ways of applying the skills learned in the prior modules. Module four focuses on using the martial spirit, persistence and motivation to achieve your dreams. This includes a strategy for enjoying your life on a daily basis and keeping yourself motivated over the long term. Module five is a short section basically designed for coaches, managers, and anyone else who needs to motivate others.

"Your Inner Edge!" is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking to change their life, improve their business, improve their self-image, or otherwise improve their life.

      Book Description

David Dollar and Edward Wolff look at claims that a deindustrialized United States is on the road to secondrate status in the global marketplace and find them to be both unfounded and simplistic. Their systematic and empirical investigation of the mechanisms through which countries like Japan and Germany have caught up with the United States in terms of productivity and standard of living will inform public debate about which government policies are likely to improve a nation's competitiveness.

Looking at productivity convergence from the industry and subindustry level, Dollar and Wolff also examine questions of the relationship of productivity growth in individual industries to convergence of overall productivity in developed countries, the identification of industries crucial for aggregate productivity growth, the sources of productivity growth within industries, the relationship between international trade and productivity convergence, and whether the same mechanics of convergence are at work in developing countries.

The authors' findings reveal, among other things, that the slowness of U.S. productivity growth relative to other nations is largely due to forces pushing for convergence of aggregate productivity levels. Although other countries have been catching up with the U.S., there is no evidence that they will surpass the US. or that the U.S. has deindustrialized.

Perhaps most important, Dollar and Wolff find that countries catch up by raising their productivity levels in all manufacturing industries, not by large shifts of their employment and output from low- to high-value-added sectors. The growing similarity of advanced economies in terms of overall productivity masks a continued high degree of specialization in particular industries. Today different countries are the productivity leaders in different industries. Accordingly, the authors recommend that public policy focus on institutions and policies to promote innovation in general, rather than in key industries, and on free trade rather than protectionism.

David Dollar is Senior Economist at the World Bank. Edward N. Wolff is Professor of Economics at New York University.

You certainly won't find any fluff in this book. It is not, as suggested by another reviewer, written in early modern English, but in thoroughly modern English. The prose is a bit stiff and formal, almost academic (which is consistent with its publication date), but entirely readable. There are a few quotes and poems in original languages which are not translated.
These problems aside, for anyone truly interested in the origins of how we celebrate various "festivals" this time of year, this book is indispensable. I actually found the second part of the book, dealing with pagan rituals and festivals, to be the most interesting; it is fascinating to me how these practices, some thousands of years old, have survived to this day in various forms in different parts of the world.
The origins of Christmas are dealt with in a very straightforward, dispassionate way.

3 out of 5 stars Quality, But Difficult, Read.......2005-12-21

This books will offer an excellent overview of Christmas if you can get through the prose. Written in a by-gone time, this book may challenge readers.

If you can get through the awardness of the writing style, please prepare for Christmas treat!

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Book For All Christmas Lovers.......2001-02-05

I really enjoyed this book. Clement A. Miles draws from a rich history of celebrating the season. Here we can see where the Church would take a pagan custom and "Christianize" it. The end result is that most of these customs, especially the celebration of Christmas on December 25, have competed with the pagan ritual or observance so that the pagan religous significance is no longer left. The Christian version is the reality that usually comes down to us today.

Miles's study includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1) Christmas poetry; 2) Christmas liturgy and popular devotion; 3) Christmas drama; 4) Pre-christian winter festivals; 5) Christmas feasting; 6) Christmas tree and decorations etc.

Also, there is quite a bit of comment on several feast days and non-Christmas related observances. In organising the book, Miles begins with many common Christmas observances and then considers other celebrations largely in the order that they appear in the calendar.

This book is not difficult to read. Every year one member of our family drafts a Christmas quiz which is composed of multiple choice questions about the season. When my year came up, this book was invaluable.

Fill your mind with yuletide knowledge and enjoy the book.

        1 out of 5 stars A Difficult read.......2000-11-28

Although the information is located, somewhere, in this edition it is difficult to cut through the use of "Ye Kings English" Reading this book is like reading an old kings james version of the Bible.(Not that the KJV is bad, just tasking to get through all the "Thee's & Thou's) The information about Christmas is in the book, it just seems to take forever to get around the word usage. I also found the order in which the information is presented not easy to follow. In my opinion if you are looking for just "history of Christmas" Go some place else FAST, before you fall asleep reading this snoozer! If you so choose to purchase this edition take no-doz and good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading.......1998-03-24

This book was originally published in 1912 under the title "Christmas in Ritual and Tradition, Christian and Pagan".

This Book not only covers Christmas, but Halloween and various Saint's Days.

Mr. Miles does an interesting job of exploring the lore behind Christmas breads and cakes, the Yule log, decorating, and the Christmas Dramas of Europe and the British Isles, earlier this century.

A quaint Northumberland ritual utilizing Holly leaves is presented from page 275 of this work:

"....Nine leaves are taken up and tied with nine knots into a
"handkerchief, and put under the pillow by a person who
        "desires prophetic dreams.
"For this purpose smooth leaves (without prickles)
        "must be employed...."
The next sentence informs us that "holly is hated by witches"....

A twist on the familiar "Kissing under the Mistletoe" is given on the previous page, and we are informed that after each kiss, the boy removes a berry from the bough, and "when the berries were all picked, the privilege ceased."

You will also find a scattering of black and white reproductions of paintings, a wonderfully etched reproduction of Albreht Durer's "Madonna and Child", as well as a bibliography, notes and an index.

This book is well worth it's modest price.

                  Book Description

The competence-based perspective on strategy and management emerged in the 1990s as a new approach to developing strategy and management theory and practice. In the past decade, the focus on organizational competences - and the resources, capabilities, and processes that create competences - has provided a highly productive "broad church" for theory development, research, and practice in both strategic and general management.

Authored by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners working within the competence perspective, the papers in this volume contribute to developing a better theoretical and practical understanding of the role of resources, stakeholders, and organizational renewal in an organization's competences. The papers present both theoretical developments and empirical research based on a variety of case studies and other research in diverse industrial and geographical contexts.

The papers in this volume are grouped under the three themes stated in the title of the volume. Part I includes papers that address a range of conceptual and practical questions about the role of both firm-specific and firm-addressable resources in an organization's competence building and leveraging, as well as issues in effectively managing a dynamic resource base. The papers in Part II investigate the management of stakeholders who provide the critical resources and capabilities a competent organization requires. Part III includes papers that focus on processes of organizational renewal, with an emphasis on the roles of key resources and stakeholders in contributing to renewal.

                    Book Description

The author describes the property rights that exist in different organizational forms and explains how these establish incentives for managerial decision behavior. She compares the rights, incentives, and corresponding decision behavior in for-profit, nonprofit, and public organizations under conditions of unbounded rationality. She shows that managerial responses to regulation, tax, and industrial organization policies may differ from the usual predictions when property rights are considered. She also shows how property rights link economic and organization theory.

                      Book Description

Despite the increasing necessity for information on allocating dwindling resources, resource-allocation behavior is not nearly so well understood as choice behavior (selection from two or more already defined alternatives, events, or lotteries.)

Although there have been scores of books devoted to the optimal model for making resource-allocation decisions there has never been a book discussing the cognitive aspects of this behavior.

This book answers the question of how people make such decisions while explaining how Linear Programming can be applied within the context of resource-allocation. It also takes the reader step-by-step into several types of problems under varying conditions, including harsh and benign environments, maximization and minimization, multi-dimensional, and cyclical problems.

                          Description:
Individuals that display elaborate sexually selected characters often show reduced immune function. According to the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis, testosterone (T) is responsible for this result as it drives the development and maintenance of sexual characters and causes immunosuppression. But glucocorticoids also have strong influences on immune function and may also be elevated in reproductively active males. Here, we compared immune activity using the phytohemagglutinin (PHA) skin test in three discrete groups of male marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus): territorials, satellites, and bachelors. Males of these three reproductive phenotypes had indistinguishable T concentrations during the height of the breeding season, but their corticosterone (cort) concentrations, body condition and hematocrit were significantly different. Territorial males, the animals with the most elaborate sexual ornaments and behaviors, had lower immune responses and body condition but higher cort concentrations and hematocrit than satellites or bachelors. To test directly cort's immunosuppressive role, we elevated cort by either restraining animals or additionally injecting cort and compared their PHA swelling response with the response of free-roaming animals. Such experimental elevation of cort significantly decreased immune activity in both restrained and cort-injected animals. Our data show that cort can induce immunosuppression, but they do not support the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis in its narrow sense because T concentrations were not related to immunosuppression.
