I think positive reviews for these books come from "Vault Staff" The book is tiny and thin, with doublespaced paragraphs to attempt to beef it up. So, each page is in this book has approximately 1/3 of a page's worth of information.

Having said that, we are treated to about 20 pages of information on the financial industry. We are treated to information like "the stock market is where shares of stock - pieces of ownership in companies - are traded every day." No mention of currency markets.

Then, we have 30 pages listing the jobs. The jobs listed include "trader" and each of one, yes one SHORT paragraph describing what they do.

Finally, a list of investment banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) with a 1 to 3 pages describing what it's like to work there (long hours).

Most of this information is common knowledge to people who have half a clue about the industry - TIAA pays less than Goldman: who knew?

One great thing about this book is the advertisements: Not just for other Vault products and sites, but for a few investment banks and recruiters - this may be be the opportunity the readers are hoping for.

I don't normally write reviews, but I just got this book and had to write. The book has detailed insider accounts of life inside every major investment banking firms, including its history, areas of specialization, and tips on the hiring and interviewing process. Highly recommended for job seekers and consultants alike.

Essential resource for banking jobs.......2001-09-09

I found this book to be immensely helpful to distinguishing the various investment banks and commercial banks. There are also specific tips for each company on what they look for in the job interview. Particularly as wall street is downsizing, I think the Vault book provided me with the edge I needed to land my job in a tough job market.

This book is an excellent continuation of the Tricentennial series on the colonial beginnings of South Carolina. The book is written very clearly and does not require a degree in economics to understand. The author has liberally supplied the book with statistical tables to allow the reader to easily comprehend the points that he is making about the evolution of economic conditions of pre-1750 South Carolina.

Textured Knits.......2007-06-25

I, too, bought this book for the cover sweater. I am knitting it now and discovered that altho the photo shows the chevrons coming together at the side seams, they will not do so. The charts themselves do not provide for that happening. In addition, there is an error in the left front chart. This is disappointing, to say the least. I logged on to the publisher's web site and could find no errata.

Pattern shapes fall far short of fashionable.......2005-07-23

I bought this book because I liked the texture of the sweater on the front. I was very disappointed to find that the book is full of straight-sided sweaters. There is not a fitted sweater to be found in the entire book! Regardless of how the type of sweater portrayed is meant to fit, every sweater knits straight up the side. Any clean-cut edginess that may be added to the sweaters by the texure is ultimately ruined by the shapelessness of the sweaters themselves. I vaguely considered altering some of the sweaters to have a more modern look, but I finally decided it's not worth it so I'm returning this book.

Nice addition.......2005-06-23

I've found Textured Knits to be a lovely addition to my knitting library. The sweaters are pretty, and while the printed instructions may appear to limit sizing, an experienced knitter can readily enlarge a garment by increasing needle size and yarn gauge. Most of these styles can be knitted in easily obtainable, inexpensive yarns, or if preferred, in higher end designer yarns. Either way, the end product should be stylish and attractive. If you're the type of knitter who likes to follow a pattern to the letter, I suppose you might not like this collection. But if you're comfortable trying out your own little modifications, as I am, you'll find many of these patterns enticing.

Narrow size range!.......2005-04-09

Any knitting book that can't be bothered to alter patterns for a reasonable range of sizes isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

Great patterns but not a big range of sizes.......2004-08-18

A good selection of lovely patterns, contemporary-feeling but classic enough to last, mainly (but not entirely) in the fitted cardigan category. I like the use of beads in some patterns, and the different stitch patterns used to achieve stitch texture. The book is high in production values, with good photography and a very Rowan- or Bliss- like feel. My biggest quibble is that the sizing is limited, only 3 sizes and they range from 34 to 38. Uses all Rowan and Jaeger yarns but most of the patterns are DK weight so it would be easy to substitute. Definitely worth a look if you fit in the size range.

I couldn't even get through this book.......2004-02-01

After reading "Catalog Copy That Sizzles", I had to read this book. I found the chapter on creating and writing descriptions of be long and boring.

The rest of the book is a great resource when it comes to creating a catalog, but don't get one book and one author's opinion. Get at least two or three books so you can form your own opinion on how to create your catalog and you can use the tips and techniques of a variety of authors.

Better than a college course!.......2002-05-24

I learned more about designing catalogs from this book than I learned from my entire college education. It's not so much a graphic design book as it is a formula for content. You'll how to design photos (or articulate your ideas to a professional photographer), how to lay out our front and back covers, how to design an effective order blank, etc.

There are two things I REALLY like about this book. First, it cites good, solid research to back up its recommendations. Second, it doesn't have the "I-know-it-all-and-if-you-don't-follow-me-you'll-fail" attitude that so many do-it-yourself business books have.

You'll also appreciate the abundance of real-life examples the book gives you--you'll look at catalog pages from well-knwon companies like Lands' End, Viking, and Brookstone.

Keep in mind, too, that many of the concepts you'll learn here will carry over into both web site and brochure design.

Okay book if you've already decided on a business area.......1998-11-07

This is an okay book if you've already figured out the business side of building a catalog business, which I would argue is actually extremely important. This book is more implementation oriented with good color examples of other catalogs. It's more about the production of the catalog which I think is more intuitive. The challenge is finding a new business area that can be profitable.

Covey at his best.......2007-06-29

This is Covey at his best. I've heard him speak several times and in my opinion Covey is at his best when he's talking freely with an audience and his speech isn't overly scripted. That is the case with this production and he even takes questions from the audience and weaves them into his discourse masterfully. This production really enforces and builds upon the principles from his Seven Habits book. I would highly recommend this recording to anyone that enjoyed his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Volume 19, covering the final critical weeks of the First Congress, reveals Washington and Jefferson in the closest and most confidential relationship that existed at any time during their official careers. It opens with the proclamation announcing the exact location of the Federal District, an unexplained choice made in the utmost secrecy by the President in consultation with the Secretary of State some weeks before Washington toured the upper Potomac in an ostensible journey to inspect rival sites and to encourage competition for the location of the national capital. It includes the politically related question of the chartering of the Bank of the United States, on which Jefferson delivered his famous opinion challenging its constitutionality.

But the conflict with Hamilton over the Bank, important as it was, did not bring the two men on the public stage as contestants. Instead, the first focusing of public attention on the breach in the administration occurred with the publication of Jefferson's report on the whale and cod fisheries. This widely disseminated report is here presented in a context showing that, after Hamilton declined to cooperate in reciprocating the favors France had granted to American trade, Jefferson deliberately and publicly challenged the Hamiltonian opposition. In unusually blunt language, his report called for commercial retaliation against Great Britain, thus causing a sensation both in the ... ministry.
