2 out of 5 stars Good but not too helpful.......2005-01-04

This isn't really a bad book it just isn't that helpful in the long run. Requirements (GPA or GRE scores) are missing in most sections, the tuition amount is always outdated. I could see how a book like this was helpful ten years ago but right now I believe the internet is more helpful. All of this information can be found on www.petersons.com for free. Either way if you buy this book you will have to use the internet to get more updated information. Not bad to flip through in the library but not worth the money to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Good text for your grad prep toolbelt.......2007-05-06

This is a great book that looks at the professional potentials with different types of Psychology graduates paths, how to prepare, tips for application, and is just a great addition to the other books for Psychology career seeking students. (It is also a great complement to Graduate Programs in Psychology which provides a comprehensive list of nearly all programs for Psychology in undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs. Get the GRE prep book by Kaplan, and you have a great trifecta.)

3 out of 5 stars This book has limited usefulness.......2005-11-10

This book was not at all useful to me, although it may be useful to some of you.

About a third of the book is taken up by information about different types of psychology programs such as clinical, counseling, biopsychology, and social work, and in helping you decide which of those is right for you. This is useful if you have only a general interest in psychology and want more information, but is not at all useful if you have already decided on a sub-discipline.

Another third of the book is taken up by instructions for applying to clinical and counseling programs. For instance, it suggests classes you should take and activities or clubs you should participate in. If you are already a senior, or have already gotten advising from psychology professors, this information will not be useful. They also give sample personal statements, which could be a helpful starting point if you have no idea how to write a personal statement. However, I think it would be just as effective to write you statement without the book and then ask one of your professors to read over it and give you feedback.

The last third of the book is taken up by information about specific programs. I only looked at the clinical ones, so I can't give any feedback on the info. about counseling programs. The book lists a series of research interests one might have, such as "mood disorders" and lists schools with faculty who have this research interests. I am interested in aging, especially alzheimer's disease. Using the book, I found programs that supposedly shared those intersts, but when I went to some of the school websites I could not find any listed faculty with those interests. Instead, I ended up googling my interest "aging" and "dementia" and using the advanced search function to restrict the search to domains ending in .edu. Using this method I was able to find plenty of schools to apply to. I suggest you save yourself the price of the book, and do the same.

Basically, this book can serve as either a first source of information about psychology careers, or as a poor substitute for advising from actual psychology professors.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Resource for Gaining Admission to Psychology Grad Programs.......2005-07-04

I bought this book last February when I decided that I wanted to change careers and pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. This book provides you with an excellent step-by-step guide on how to gain admission to your desired school - I've read a lot of these books now and this one is the best by far. It's an especially good resource for those who were not psychology undergraduates, like myself - the book tells you what classes to take to gain the knowledge necessary to transition to a psychology career, the level of research experience needed and feasible ways to obtain that experience, as well as estimations of the financial costs that you will inevitably incur during the application process. And most of this is just in Chapter 1. I will be first in line to buy the 2005/2006 edition-

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding source.......2005-06-19

I highly recommend this guide to any psych undergrad wanting to be a clinical psychologist. The earlier you pick this guide up the better. It outlines everything you really need to know to set yourself up to be competitive. It is definitely worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute necessity for applicants!.......2004-09-26

This book was RIGHT on about pretty much every aspect of applying to graduate programs in Clinical Psychology. My favorite aspect is that the programs each rate themselves on how research-oriented they are. Where else can you find that information?!

    Great book!

    5 out of 5 stars A book by a legendary entrepreneur.......2005-03-23

Every street is paved with gold, by Kim Woo-Choong, is a book
that will appeal to young executives. Kim Woo-Choong, is a self-made billionaire. Kim made his fortune by starting his
company Daewoo and by working day and night at exporting a variety of goods to the world market from 1967 to 1997.

When the Asian financial crisis hit, Daewoo and many other Korean firms where in deep trouble. At the time, Daewoo was in the middle of a massive global expansion funded by heavily borrowing funds on the world's financial markets.

As the crisis deepened, the company struggled to repay its creditors. During the time, Kim took steps to save his company by diverting Daewoo funds and securing illegal loans. Kim is currently a fugitive and in hiding. ( But it is my view that the Korean government at the time, is just as guilty as Kim for the inept way it handled the financial crisis ).

It is Kim Woo Chung's life story ( Daewoo ) and that of Chung Ju Yung ( Hyundai ) which is actually inspiring - the achievements of their companies ( via Korea's labor force ) within a 30 year period.

This book is filled with short-stories about how a business person should conduct him/herself in the world; what their business outlook, vision and attitude towards opportunity should be. Kim writes about the importance of dreams, visions, optimism and prompt business decisions to entrepreneurs. He gives many examples of how risk taking, hard work,
effective time management and the nurturing of skills can transform a business. Kim also stresses leadership characteristics and that hard work is as important as profits.

I found certain sections of the book very inspiring. Kim has a forceful way of expressing his ideas in many inspiring quotes. Many of his short stories, contain profound and thought provoking business tips.

1 out of 5 stars The Enron of Korea..........2004-10-18

Kim, like most Korean cheabols, built their companies from scratch thru dirt-cheap government loans and a protectionist environment that shielded their companies from competition at the expense of the consumer. After the bankruptcy of Daewoo dutrng the Asian Financial crisis, Kim has already fled his native country and is now living under a French passport since Korea doesn't have any extradition powers over France to get him. Kim is now a infamous and a shame to all Korean people and every business person would do well to learn from his mistakes.

1 out of 5 stars Every Street Is Paved With Gold : The Road to Real Success.......2001-03-21

This book's credibility is suspect, to say the least. The author's company is now insolvent (as of March 2001) and he has gone into hiding after allegations of embezzlement.

    1 out of 5 stars What a jerk.......2000-11-10

This Kim Woojoong character is one of the biggest jerks in Korea. His street was paved with gold, sure. And he pocketed billions of US dollars for his own personal use, most of it borrowed against his heavily leveraged companies. He is probably single-handedly responsible for Korea's current economic woes. His companies are all bankrupt--financially and morally. And he got off free of charge, not hving to give up a single dime of his own money to save the thousands of employees who are now out on their ears, despite all their hard work. This book is an embarrassment.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the most inspiring book!.......1998-09-09

I liked this book because it changed the way I looked at life, in general and the way I live in particular. Although this book does not seem like a typical 'how to' book, it does more than that by example. The author's exemplary life style, extremely hard working, simple and modest puts the average complaining person to shame. After reading this book I personally have changed. The author's ideas about thrift, attitude towards your work, hard work and simple living are contagious. It is difficult not to imbibe these values after reading this book. It is a 'must read' for every one including and specially youngsters.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference and Companion to the PMBOK.......2004-11-14

Using this book as a study guide, it is possible to pass the PMP exam. Using only Project Management in Practice and the PMBOK to study from, I easily passed the PMP exam the first time without joining one of the intensive prep classes. Nearly all the questions on the exam were covered in this book. All the PMI required areas of study are covered; Organization, Planning, Budgeting, Scheduling, Resourcing, Monitoring and Controlling, Evaluating and Terminating. The concepts of Earned Value and Critical Path Method are easily explained and examples given. Formulas and case studies are provided with each chapter. As a practicing Project Management Professional (PMP), I still refer to Project Management in Practice.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions excellent. The projects are for every level of craftmanship, from glueing to weaving, from rather simple to more complex. I only whished there were even more of them included.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2002-01-12

I highly recommend "Dollhouse Decor: Creating Soft Furnishings in 1/12 Scale" to anyone interested in furnishing dollhouses or just at looking at pictures of how others have furnished theirs. The Forder's book is arranged by periods of style, and goes into a bit of detail about what makes each period's style unique. The projects are designed for all skill levels, from those who work best with a bit of glue and a pair of scissors, to those who enjoy doing their own weaving. Each project is preceded by a symbol to let the reader know the level of skill required. Yet regardless of the level, all the projects are well explained.
Equally enjoyable is the photography. There are none of the grainy pictures that are so annoying in some dollhouse books. Each photograph is large and clear, and shows the meticulous level of detail that the Forders put into their work.

4 out of 5 stars Takes It Beyond the Obvious.......2002-09-01

Although the book's title is How to get Publicity, that is really not the best reason to get this book. In fact, there are other books that are stronger on how to obtain publicity, like Michael levine's guerrilla PR: wired.

No, the real reason to get this book is its secondary title--And Make the Most of It (Publicity) Once You've Got It.

Lots of books tell you how to get publicity, but that's where they stop. Fine, you're famous; now what? That's what this book helps you with. That is its strength and what sets it apart from all the rest.

4 out of 5 stars You'll Read It Again and Again.......2002-08-16

As a writer, this book is essential to making a living. This book talks about getting pr on the web, and how to save money throughout all of your pr strategies. I also liked Guerrilla PR Wired, Michael Levine's book. These two are the only reference books a writer will need to successfully market his or her projects.

                4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2002-07-08

Who? Author William Parkhurst. What? A new edition of his public relations primer. When? Now. Why? Because small business needs an Internet-friendly PR update. How? Pretty good, thank you. Putting those five questions at the heart of your press release is only one of the techniques this book describes for creating an effective publicity campaign. Parkhurst focuses on obtaining low-cost publicity, including how to do your own press releases and Web-page designs. Much of the book deals with well-established strategies, including those described in an earlier edition. This edition's new material covers E-publicity and use of the Internet. We from getAbstract recommend this solid basic text to individual entrepreneurs and owners of small businesses.

5 out of 5 stars The book is a must for every writer.......2001-01-11

How to Get Publicity teaches a writer everything he needs to know about publicity. It is easy to read and packed with great tid bits and gems. Buy this book- you will be happy you did!

                5 out of 5 stars A Classic, Now Updated.......2000-10-04

This is one of my favorite books; I've had earlier editions on my shelf for years. As an author and a publisher, I use Parkhurst's advice to promote books.

How to Get Publicity describes writing news releases, media kits, media campaigns, interviews on radio, TV & for print, adverse publicity, the press conference, satellite tours, and much more.

As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I recommend this volume to anyone who has to promote him or herself or their book. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

5 out of 5 stars A fundamental effort in synthesis of OR,AI, DSS.......2000-05-03

The book provides a sound yet practical introduction to the intersection of three fields operation research, Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Sytems. The book is based on effective use of constraint logic programming paradigm. There is an associated software package for 2LP language with models and solutions. 2LP is combination of Linear programming and Logic programming. The power of simplex algorithm is used in theorem prover . The language constructs resemble C++; The book is primarily written to show the power of the language in solving various problems; scheduling, pattern recognition, puzzzle solving, assignment problem, task allocation, time table problem, etc. The book does not the discuss about the programming theory in design of the language. The authors discuss about various theoritical aspects of OR and AI. Each cahpter introduces one concept and its relevance explained with some concrete models. All models and solutions are part of the software package. Very good book.

                  Book Description

Computer Science and Operations Research continue to have a synergistic relationship and this book - as a part of the Operations Research and Computer Science Interface Series - sits squarely in the center of the confluence of these two technical research communities. The research presented in the volume is evidence of the expanding frontiers of these two intersecting disciplines and provides researchers and practitioners with new work in the areas of logic programming, stochastic optimization, heuristic search and post-solution analysis for integer programs.
The chapter topics span the spectrum of application level. Some of the chapters are highly applied and others represent work in which the application potential is only beginning. In addition, each chapter contains expository material and reviews of the literature designed to enhance the participation of the reader in this expanding interface.

                              Book Description

An understanding of emergent computation requires a profound revision of the most fundamental ideas. A noticeable attempt of such a rethinking is a world view in which natural systems are seen not as separate entities but as integrated parts of a unified whole. The book for the first time presents such a mathematical structure, which remarkably is based on integers as the single concept. As integers are considered to be the most fundamental entities irreducible to something simpler, this makes the mathematical structure a final theory, and thus we do not have to look for its explanation in terms of deeper concepts. The book is not only applicable to models of computation and optimization but also has scientific consequences, as it contributes to a rethinking of the most fundamental ideas about nature.
Audience: The book is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students as well as research workers and practitioners in computer science information technology, mathematics and physics. The book is suitable as a reference or as supplementary reading material for an advanced graduate course. Only a basic knowledge of calculus is required.
