Worth its weight in GOLD.......2003-01-24

I'm a beginning woodworker who wants to get the most out of the tools I have and produce the best work I can. That is probably true of anyone of any ability. This set of books had me going "WOW! What a great idea!" over and over again as I flipped the pages.

I don't understand the reviewer that downgraded the book as "just tips". Funny, that's what it is ADVERTISED as being: "The Best Tips from 25 years of Fine Woodworking". Downgrading it for being what it says it is seems a bit foolish to me. Like buying a sports car that advertises itself as a sports car and then complaining that it isn't an SUV? (Perhaps we should give the Reviewers themselves star ratings?)

If you are looking for an impressive collection of tips this set gives maximum bang for the buck. 4 volumes (Tablesaw, Router, Workshop and Finishing) cover all of the biggies in my book. Nearly A THOUSAND pages. Each of these volumes is available separately, (if only one of those topics interests you) but I like the slipcase set

Note: Do not be confused by the fact that Taunton is now calling the set "The Best Tips from 27 years of Fine Woodworking". I checked the copyright date and the ISBN number. There is no newer edition. This is the set they are selling. (The new headline is misleading and reflects that two more years of the magazine has been published, but those tips are not in this set.) No matter. Visit your library to catch up on the last 14 issues or so.

The book often gives you multiple ways to do the same thing. (Example: jigs to cut perfect miters on a table saw). Some tips build on tips that came before. All of this adds to your learning process and gives you more choices.

The illustrations by Jim Richey are wonderful and give you only the essentials (no distractions, as in actual photographs) and much more personal feeling than sterile drafted plans. The reader is left to adapt the idea to his particular shop or tool. I love mine and highly recommend the set.

Only tips and not much else.......2003-01-03

If you are a novice looking for a beginning table saw book, look elsewhere. This book is only for those who understand the jargon of the seasoned woodworker. One of the first tips introduced speaks about runout, I had no idea what it was and the book never fully explained it. I also found the illustrations to be lacking information and the photgraphs outdated. Again, don't buy this book if you want basic tablesaw how to.

Jim has taken the attitude of not talking down to his readers, or should I say collegues. His approach assumes basic woodworking knowledge but presents the tips in a very accessible manner for the beginner and veteran. Readers will enjoy the simple and concise illustrations and step by step guidance. Seasoned woodworkers will enjoy refreshing their skills and looking at solving problems from Jim's perspective as a teacher and craftsman. When you can't get to the shop to make sawdust, this books gives almost as much satisfaction. Soon to become a favorite shop reference.

If you're looking for a book to learn how to use a router, this isn't it.

If you have some experiance using a router this is a great book. This book contains the best ideas that Fine Woodworking readers have come up with in the last 25 years. As future projects come along, I'll be checking this book often.

Boy, was I disappointed!.......2004-01-19

I have to disagree with the reviewers who gave this book high marks. While Jim Richey is very knowledgeable, this book is a set of one-page clippings from various past magazines. The drawings are very basic, and there's not a single photograph to help the beginning to moderate woodworker. These tips are too basic for the advanced woodworker, so I really don't see an audience for this book. It didn't help me at all. There's nothing wrong with the book -- if you want to read about other people's woodworking. However, to help you build your router skills there are wiser ways to spend your money. Several are sold right here on Amazon.

This book is what I have grown to expect from Taunton Publishing, and the Editors at Fine Woodworking.

As a collection of the best tips on router use from Fine Woodworking Magazine, I assumed with out opening the cover that all of the tips would be well thought out and useful, and I wasn't wrong.

I keep my copy in my travel case for my routers, and refer to it frequently. Less so now than I did a year ago when I first bought it, only because I've learned a lot from it, and am starting to memorize it.

If you own a router, this book is a must own / read.

Anti-economics is described as the opposition to the main stream of economic thought that has existed from the eighteenth-century to the present day. This book tells the story of anti-economics in relations to Smith, Ricardo, Mill, Walras, Keynes and Hicks as well as current economic thinkers. William Coleman examines how anti-economics developed from the Enlightenment to the present day and analyzes its various guises.

This book is a very fascinating look at what the author, William Coleman, calls "anti-economics". In Coleman's view mainstream economics has constantly been shadowed by a loose group of critics and nay-sayers who object to all that mainstream economics has come to represent.

As Coleman demonstrates the objections to economics are legion. On the Right of the political spectrum, mainstream economics is despised for its endorsement of the pursuit of individual self-interest which appears to be a threat to the existing social order. On the Left, economists are despised precisely because they are seen as the apologists for the existing social order. And this is only the beginning. Others object to economists views of man as a utility maximizer, man as a rational animal or economists apparent approval of profits over people...ect, ect.

Coleman's book is best read as a kind of catalouge and perhaps summary analysis of the ideas of opponents of mainstream economics. The range of views he presents and the depth of his research alone is impressive. The bibliography of works Coleman provides in and of itself is an invaluable resource to anyone interested in the history of economic ideas or intellectual history in general.

However, as a defense of mainstream economics it is much less impressive. First, it is never clear exactly what Coleman means by "economics" or in his words "the grand tradition". In some cases he appears to be defending the idea of a free market capitalism, in other cases he appears to be defending the idea of economic man and sometimes Coleman's concerns seem to be focused more on defending Enlightenment ideas of human nature than economics per se. By failing to be more precise in exactly what he is in fact defending Coleman is able to lump a wide body of thought into the category of "anti-economics" but sometimes he is patently unfair in his apprasials. Just because someone had objections to economics does not mean they were "anti-economists". Some were working to revise or change the course of economics as a discipline rather than destroy it outright.

Also, Coleman tends to dismiss all objections to idea of economic man and other ideas associated with mainstream economics even when those objections seem to have some validity. While generally my personal sympathies are with free market capitalism and with mainstream economics, I do not think one can pretend that these two venerable institutions are beyond criticism or lack areas for improvement. Some of the criticisms to economics Coleman includes and refutes seem not entirely invalid to me. For example, the idea of a society of people rationally pursuing their own self-interests is I think preferable in principle, but one could posit situations in which this prinicple might be extended too far to the detriment of society at large.

Whatever shortcomings Coleman's work might have it is still a highly enjoyable, fascinating and informative read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a serious (or even casual) student of economic thought and the history of ideas.

Want to know about customer equity this is it, the definitive guide. Full of enough detail to put into practice, a revelation of a business book.

The central idea of a customer as an asset is clearly explained - with actual calculations! Then a framework is developed for putting the central idea into practice.

Almost unique amongst modern business books, this one shows you how to do something difficult in practice, it takes the trouble to show enough detail without being boring.

Wrong Perspective.......2003-05-25

The authors failed to account for value (or equity) being measured from the perspective of the customer (and/or other stakeholders such as employees). It is the percieved equity that a customer holds for the business that entices them to maintain a relationship. It is specifically that equity that businesses should focus on. By studying the dynamics of 'that' equity they can better determine what individuals value and focus resources (where applicable) on making sure the equity is either preserved (elimination of barriers) or enhanced (by exceeding expectations).

Businesses don't exist because they have something to sell. They have something to sell because someone is willing to buy it...they need to spend more time figuring out 'why' and enhancing that aspect of the relationship. It's a 'draw' not a 'push'.

Based on the title I thought they had it right. They didn't.

Fails to Advance Ideas and Understanding of the Topic.......2001-09-28

Although this book is well written, it fails in delivering any new insights, ideas, or analysis. Everything in this book has been tossed around and discussed by both practictioners and academics for atleast three years. Perhaps his book would have been useful a few years ago. The treatment is less rigorous than that by Ronald Rust etc. and it also doesn't go much beyond what they already said in there in book.

I purchased this book looking for insight, but merely found a collection of common practices and ideas. What makes this so disappointing, is the quality of Blattberg's previous works is excellent, I fear that this subject matter has passed him by.

As I found this Book very useful for our studies. Actually this book was designed for senior level Business and Research students. I myself studying MBA in electronic commerce manage to see this book from my Tutor for few days. It contains lot of real time examples and large source of research information for everybody. An excellent text.......2002-03-01

i have been teaching Business Research to MBA classes for 5 years. I have gone through many text books and tried out several as recommended reading for my classes. None come even close to the readability and sheer ease of use of this book by Professor Zikmund. It is well organised, and gives comprehensive coverage to all aspects of research without getting bogged down in theory. The examples, end of chapter questions and cases are interesting and serve as excellent discussion points in class. I am happy to see a new edition is available and hope that it will contain some more up to date examples.
